9news reporter steve staeger joins us. police say it didn't take long to catch up with the suspect. >> reporter: it was really just a few blocks. this all started as a burglary call around 37th and grove. the female officer and another officer caught up with the two suspects from that burglary a few blocks away. one was arrested there. the other took off on foot. both officers chased this man to montcrief and lowell. the suspect then carjacked a woman in that area and drove her silver car further up lowell. police chased and the suspect lost control of the car around 35th and lowell. more gunfire was exchanged there. the suspect was shot and killed. we talked to a woman working inside a pizza police near where that carjacking happen who saw the whole thing. >> she just ran and like he was already -- by the time she was at the car running he was already shooting. i don't know if he was shooting at her or just shooting down the street.
5:01 pm
it was kind of scary. >> the suspect lost control of that vehicle in the 3500 block of lowell where officers stopped it. at that location shots were exchanged between the suspect and two officers. the suspect was hit and was pronounced at the scene. >> reporter: denver police tell us that four officers opened fire in this entire incident. as usual, in cases like this they are not saying who shot first in any of those scenarios. there's a lot more investigating to do and you can imagine with a crime scene as large as this one, it's going to take quite a while. >> thanks a lot, steve. >> the injured officer is treated at denver health medical center. she was shot in her lower left leg and is listed in fair condition this afternoon. police chief robert white says this is a difficult time for his department and that his officers are doing what they can to be supportive of one another. the neighborhood where today's shootings took place has

garage, make sure to close it just in case there's something coming close to my house. >> reporter: now this is where the scene ended route here on lowell and 35th. this is still shut down. there are several police officers still here making sure that no one goes to this crime scene. just a few blocks away there is another scene where there is a police car just like this one where the front fender is badly damaged. also the wheel has been popped. that tire there on that car, not exactly sure what that scene was, but there are shooting. there are some people still stuck in their houses not able to get out. there's no word when these scenes will be cleared and traffic will flow back through. >> very busy investigation, victoria sanchez live along lowell boulevard. it's almost been a year since dynel lane attacked michelle wilkins. wilkens survived. her unborn baby did not. the jury went home for the day.

joins us from boulder county court. >> reporter: the jury will be back here at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning. they deliberated six hours. they had some questions. the judge did not make those questions available to the media, to the public. look, both sides agree that lane attacked wilkins. the question that not everybody agrees on is did lane intend to kill wilkins? >> welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. >> reporter: without finding intent to kill the jury can only find lane guilty of attempted manslaughter and the prosecution did everything they could to show lane thought about the attack to show lane was desperate to prove to her family she was pregnant. >> over the course of a couple of months she manipulated her body to make it look like she was pregnant and took pictures of what looked to outsiders like a pregnant belly. she found a picture of an ultrasound on the internet and
5:05 pm
ultrasound picture of his son. >> reporter: the prosecution explained that intent to kill was there even after cutting the unborn child from wilkins' womb. >> after all that she was laying there with her guts hanging out bleeding profusely what does this defendant do? she leaves her there to die. >> reporter: the defense made an impassioned plea for a manslaughter conviction, that the attack had not been planned or thought about. >> if her intent was that i'm going to kill this woman to cut her baby up, why wouldn't she have one weapon on her? why wouldn't she be prepared in any way? why would she do this in her daughter's bedroom using accessible things during the attack? why? because it was a hasty impulsive, aggressive act. there never was any intention. >> reporter: did lane act out of desperation to prove she was
5:06 pm
when wilkins was in her home? that is what the jury is grappling with now. that jury will grapple with it throughout the night. michelle wilkins by the way was sitting in court today for these closing arguments just on the other side of the room from her attacker. >> they really hasn't shown a whole lot more emotion through these proceedings except one point when she kind of ducked her head and showed a little emotion there and the defense didn't call any witnesses in this. >> reporter: no. they left it at what it was the other day and now they are trying to argue in closing arguments there was no intent, dynel lane did not intend to kill michelle wilkins. of course, the prosecution adamantly denies that. a man found dead inside a home in unincorporated arapahoe county this morning had been the focus of a standoff with sheriff's deputies more than 10 hours overnight. the man barricaded himself inside a home around 9:00 last night. the aurora police s.w.a.t.

5:08 pm
monitor more than 750 areas around the state where rock slides could impact the road. this cdot map shows the areas they're keeping an eye on for a number of reasons. >> what the slope is like, the steepness of the slope, the traffic, the geological conditions. >> reporter: it's part of the $9 million annual budget for the rockslide mitigation program, but that amount can't cover it all. so cdot prioritizes the areas that present the greatest threat. two at the top of the list? glenwood canyon, site of the latest rockslide, and i-70 at georgetown hill. >> there's lots of fencing up in that area, a lot of netting and so that's been one of the key locations that's been mitigated for several years. >> get it out of the slide area. >> reporter: in the meantime cdot relies on maintenance crews patrolling the roads to let them know about any potential rockslide areas and occasionally they say let's

moisture from the northwest to the southeast. green is where the rain is. pink is rain mixing with snow. purple is where we're seeing heavier snow bands trying to come off the foothills. this northwest flow, kind of a downsloping flow, it dries out the atmosphere. until we see that wind shift with the arrival of a cold front later we won't see a lot of moisture on the ground. winter weather and travel advisories are out for the high country, so be mindful of that. we are anticipating 4 to 8 inches of snow starting tonight going through the day tomorrow. fast moving progressive system tracks into the southeast tomorrow. so the snow is done midmorning. skies clear in the afternoon. even with sunshine a raw day on the backside of it with chilly winds from the northwest of temperatures will be cooler than average and the only for denver but much of the southern a plan and midwest as well. with the cold -- plains and midwest as well.

of nfl free agency passed and still nothing even remotely resembling an indication of impending retirement or a desire to continue playing. we're live. 9news broncos insider mike klis is in the sport office ready to play klis and tell. seems like manning had plenty of time to think about this during the parade two weeks ago. what's taking so long? >> reporter: think about. this he came from archie and olivia manning. he's been playing quarterback since the womb and now you don't want to give him three weeks to make up his mind to decide whether or not he's never ever going to play quarterback again? it's a very difficult decision. i think it's tough for peyton manning to give up something that he's only known to do for the first 40 years of his life. he turns 40 on march 24th. this decision is about never playing quarterback again. so he's wanting to take another week or two. >> fair enough, but what's so peculiar about all the drama
5:26 pm
mike, is that it doesn't really affect the broncos either way. they're moving on regardless, right? >> reporter: they are, although they do want in deference to manning to give him the chance to retire on his own terms without the team having to make a difficult decision by march 8th to release him. however, they are going to start going down the other train tracks and start talking with brock osweiler during the nfl scouting combine beginning tomorrow. so they have put off talks with osweiler in deference to peyton manning. my prediction is manning will make his decision around march 1st and by then the broncos want to have a little bit going with brock osweiler, but the full expectation is the broncos will sign brock and he will be their quarterback in 2016. >> fantastic. thanks, mike. if martin truex, jr., would
