gary, cory, cheryl with you this morning. been a while since we've seen snowflakes. they started coming down overnight. mountain schools are on a two- hour delay. it affects just schools in the mountains. >> we have a look at the conditions there. amelia is going to let you know how the snow is affecting the commute. we start with meteorologist marty coniglio. marty, this snow is is not sticking around too long. >> in the foothills, it's not sticking around. down to jeff co. we have good air quality today, if you feel like you need a fire, you can do that. no restrictions in effect. we're having the best snow in the foothills of the front range, especially boulder county down through jeff co. it is increasing. it's not done, but it's increasing. we have a few snow showers along highway 93 into boulder. in douglas county, there's

6:04 right now. a denver police officer who was shot yesterday is expected to be okay. it happened as it was going highlands neighborhood. 9news reporter is joining me in the neighborhood this morning. the good news is that officer is expected to make a recovery. fair condition. that's the good news. she often appears in you tube videos for deliver police. yesterday she was caught in the middle of a shootout with a burglary suspect. that call came in about 1:25 yesterday afternoon near 37 37th and grove. the officers caught up with a few suspect as few blocks away. that's where officer ide was shot in the lower leg. another man took off and later carjacked a woman. officers chased them to 35th control. shots were exchanged, and the

neighbors heard the shots as they range -- rang out in the street. >> when the third car went by fast, i went to the window and heard a loud screeching noise. i opened my front door. i heard about seven to nine shots. so i ducked back into my home and waited for the shooting to stop. >> well, denver police have not named the suspect who was killed yesterday afternoon or the other man who was taken into custody. we'll keep checking with police and denver health to get up update on the officer. >> all right. our thoughts are with her for sure. 6:06. he's 17 years old and could face life in prison without the chance for parole. the teenager who took the life of a mesa county deputy, husband, and dad, is going to learn the former charges against him today.

he is now facing charges as an adult. holtzer told investigators he wanted the officer to shoot him, but the deputy would not, so he fired his gun. deputy gere's funeral was last month. more than 1500 people were there to support his wife and two middle school aged children. a verdict could come in the lane case. michelle wilkins survived the attack. her unborn baby did not. the jury deliberated for six hours yesterday before going home. they will be back at work at 9:00 this morning. >> a video posted on you tube by a man from denver as the denver area has landed him behind bars. kenneth francis is convinced that the second amendment means that anyone can own a gun, including convicted felons. so he went online, saying he would get one for them for free. in rant about the second

as the dry air moves in from the east, the best snow from the storm has been in the front range mountains and foothills communities with upwards of a foot of snow in several areas. we're also going to see dryer air move in from the north and northeast. that's going to be our trend through the day today. we're seeing clearing over the plains, clearing over northern colorado and over the metro area. snow is going to continue in and near the foothills for at least another couple of hours, which is ongoing for an inch or two of snow on top of what you have there. we'll say good-bye to the snow by 9:00 or 10:00. later this afternoon, we'll have a few snow showers. i think they hang along the

our communities as it is snowing now. we'll be in the low to mid-40s here today. again, additional snow along the east of i-25, not going to happen. on the west side of town at most, up to an inch. i think you have to be at the base of the foothills for that. as we just saw, snow hanging in the central and southwestern mountains for the day, everybody else clears out. 40s, 50s east and west with 20s and 30s in the northern mountains. stays cool in the arkansas valley with snow hanging in there for a good bit of the afternoon. sunshine, temperatures in the low 40s today. close to 20 tonight. coming up tomorrow and into the early part of the weekend, we have a nice looking forecast. it actually gets windy, amelia, on saturday. we get back into the low 60s there. >> warm and windy. sky 9, not flying today. they're going stick on the ground because of all the snow we've seen and the cold temperatures.

yes, just saw some plows go by. early this morning, i saw eight plows go by. they're trying to get all of this out of the way for your morning commute. here in lakewood, just some really wet roads. the splashback is making it hard to see if you're close to a lot of cars. eastbound sixth avenue was a headache for us. we had to keep using our wiper fluid just to have visibility around there. lakewood is not on accident alert, but right next door in golden, they're on accident alert this morning. if you're headed into that area, keep that in mind. the conditions are a little bit worse over there. definitely snow in golden. guys, i'm telling telling you it's different no matter where you two. left denver this morning. a little dusting. went to golden there. you to places where you can see snow. amelia earhart is going to join us for a live look around the metro area. >> good morning. anytime that cold air circulates underneath the bridges and ramps, that's when we see the ice stick around on the drive. for the most part, it's been really low. let's go up to i-25 and 104th. yes, it's a typical delay. it's worst than usual. near 104th itself, it's going to take you about 22 minutes to transition from the north end at u.s -- i would say e470 to u.s. 46. accident wise, we have a spin- off reported along the northbound stretch of i-25 and castle pines parkway. fairly light because the crash is off the ramp. right at the i-25 split. we're looking standard across 270 for the most part, not seeing too many extensive delays.

southbound stretch of 25 and across the 270 stretch. 8 minutes moving through in the eastbound direction. >> all four boulder valley mountain schools are on a two- hour delay this morning. you will be able to see the latest closures on the 9news app. you can also check the latest forecast and see where the storm is on the latest radar images. >> it is 6:35 now. the jurors in the lane case will be back to work in just a few hours. they have not yet reached a verdict in the case after talking about the evidence and witness testimony for six hours. lane does not argue she attacked a pregnant woman and took the baby from her body, but the lawyers say it was not premeditated. tarhonda thomas has been following this entire case for us and is at the boulder county courthouse. lane could spend more than a century in prison. >> absolutely. if she's convicted on all of

that's a sticking point for the prosecution and defense. depending on what the jury decides, she could be found guilty of that, not guilty of that. or guilty or not guilty of a lesser charge. a jury has to find intent in order to convict lane of attempted first-degree murder. in other words, they have to find she planned and attempted to kill michelle wilkins when she took that unborn baby from her womb. now, if she did not plan it, the conviction, if there is one, could be for attempted manslaughter or a lesser charge. that's why lane's lawyer had been arguing that she did not plan this attack. now, while they made that argument, the prosecution said that lane did, in fact, plan pregnancy.

she lured -- the attack was not premeditated was the argument. >> if her intent was that i'm going to kill this woman to cut her baby out, why wouldn't she have one weapon on her? in this case, at the end of the day, the defendant didn't care what happened to michelle wilkins. all she cared about was getting a baby and having a baby to prove to david ridly, to her family, that she had been pregnant. >> we did hear from a doctor at a hospital that the defendant spoke with after this incident, trying to pass that baby off as her own, originally saying it was a stillbirth. we also heard from police who responded to the scene, saying just how badly of a condition that michelle wilkins was in and it's amazing she survived. these jurors deliberated for six hours yesterday and did not come back with a verdict. they will be back at 9:00 this

happened and if these 12 jurors -- seven women and five men, if they come back with a verdict, we'll have that for you as soon as it comes down. 9news. >> tarhonda, thank you. a man has been missing for nearly two weeks. 49-year-old michael edlin was last seen february 10th. he was running near his home on jewel avenue on south union boulevard. he was wearing blue jeans and a burgundy sweatshirt with a picture of grumpy on it. they say police don't suspect foul play, but they say he does have a medical condition and needs his medication. >> a denver police officer is recovering this morning. she was shot yesterday afternoon going after a burglary suspect in the highlands neighborhood. noel brennan is following this for us. sch's expected to make a full recovery. >> she was in fair condition. she is expected to recover from

committed to continue to do what this community expects of us. >> officer ide has an outstanding work record. police have not released his name. >> noel, thank you so much. investigators in boulder say a driver caused a serious crash and did not stop. it was another hit and run in the front range this, time near the cu campus. the crash shut down u.s. 36 at baseline for about an hour last night. the boulder daily camera is reporting one woman was hit while changing a tire on the side of the road. another person was hit and both were taken to the hospital. 6:40 right now. more details are starting emerge about a terrible night when a man in michigan gunned down six people randomly around kalamazoo. police say the 45-year-old uber driver told them he took people's lives. the motive is still unclear. investigators say the shooter carried out the attacks over several hours and between the killings he drove people around

the 45-year-old man briefly appeared in court by video link. he was charged monday with six counts of murder. two people were injured, including 14-year-old abigail. >> everybody needs to get that straight, my daughter is not dead. she is alive, and she's fighting for her life. i want everybody to understand that. abigail is strong. she was a vibrant, beautiful young lady and did not deserve this. neither did her grandmother or those other victims. >> vicki said the moment her daughter squeezed her hand when she was believed dead was, quote, breathtaking. the teenager is still in critical condition. uber says they got several complains saturday night about the admitted shooter, but the company said they had no reason to believe anything was wrong with him at the time.

that the driver was driving erratically. this was more than an hour before the rampage began. uber says he cleared a background check and was approved to be a driver on january 25th. he had given slightly more than 100 rides by the night of the shootings. it's 6:41. it's pay sickly a legal and privacy -- basically a legal and privacy dispute, but the battle between apple and the government, some survivors and victims of families affected by the mass shooting will file documents supporting the feds. they want apple to help the fbi hack into a locked iphone used by one of the shooters. an attorney who represents several families will file briefs on the issue next month. apple supporters across the the country are planning to pro test. they're planning to demonstrate in apple stores across the country. >> today voters will caucus in nevada again.

candidates. nevada has 30 delegates up for grabs candidates held late night rallies. it's the republican's first test with the state be w a big latino campaign. he's still expected to be the favorite overall tonight. second place is up for grabs cruz. hillary clinton is heading into south carolina's democratic primary with enough delegates from the nevada caucus to put her ahead of bernie sanders. she currently has 52 delegates to sanders' 51. clinton's lead gets much better if you count super delegates. if you count those, clinton has 503 delegates to sanders' 70. it takes more than 2,000 delegates to win the democratic nomination. >> wall street may give back some of monday's gains.

the surge in oil prices. crude is pulling back this morning. we get data today on home prices, home sales, as well as consumer confidence. 270 people in boulder will be losing their jobs. that's because a company is closing down its call center there. a shut down expected by april 18 april 18th. now, a spokesperson says they're making the move because the customer service industry has really moved toward more of a work at home model. in fact, the company has a couple of hundred jobs now and workers are eligible to apply. amazon reclaiming its crown as the most -- company in america. amazon takes the top spot despite the reports of tough working conditions. apple, google, usaa and disney. talking about the great

foothills. this is coal creek canyon. that's cody and bandit. yeah, there's too much snow. labrador's fame is for loving snow. this is more than they want to deal with today. the snow continues on the boulder-jeff coline. we're seeing the snow along the peak to peak highway. it's still snowing in the canyon. we're going see the snow slow down here as dry air continues to work in from the south and west. in the jeff cofoothills, we sill have another inch or two of snow to go here before the snow slows down here this morning. ii would say by 7:00 or 8:00 we're done here. but by 9:00 or 10:00, we're going to be done in the foothills. we'll finish the day with dry roads and temperatures in the 40s. almost like it didn't happen, unless, of course, you live in the foothills where there will be plenty of evidence. >> yes, there will.

there's breaking news we're learning about in phoenix, police and firefighters are working at the scene of a shooting and a buyer at the same home. police say a family of four was shot. when officers arrived, the house was on fire. someone inside began shooting at those police officers. luckily, no one was hit. one gunshot victim was hit. we believe it was a girl who was hit in the abdomen. updates, although at least a report that at least one of the people inside the house may have been killed in this shooting. we'll continue to follow this story, update you on the 9news app and, of course, here on the air too. >> that's from kpnx, our

the slush, foothills area, we've had heavy snow. that will continue for another couple of hours. we'll be clearing this morning. the rest of the week will be mild. we're generally clear up in fort collins this morning. again, anything that did manage to fall melted on the pavement. we moved into the low 40s this afternoon. it's the beginning of several days of relatively mild weather. again, it's going to take a lot to melt that off. again, this video just in from coal creek canyon where we have the better part of a foot of new snow. it's a world of difference just a few miles away. amelia. >> it definitely is. the way i look at it, it's a glass half full, glass half empty situation.

the roads are drying out quickly. even in this shot earlier, we saw splashback kicking up. the roads are just a little bit wet. c-470, we're right about 8 minutes to wadsworth. i have word of a new accident here. c-470 near alameda. greg, don't forget, traffic is alternating and we shut down completely at 4:00. those who have a mortgage feel pretty good about their equity. 46% of homeowners think they will see an increase this year. 85% expect to see a 10% or more rise in their home equity this year. on average, however, the forecast is for smaller gains in the range of 2-5%.
