everyone. a section of south federal near west mexico was shut down this evening. denver police blocked traffic on federal in both directions after a report of shots fired at an apartment complex. s.w.a.t. team members responded. they have taken one person of interest into custody. the road has since reopened in both directions. we will pass it along as we learn more. alternative transportation became necessary today for kids from buffalo ridge elementary school and rocky heights middle school on a field trip to a museum in downtown denver. their school bus caught on fire this afternoon near the brown palace hotel. the denver fire department says it was an engine fire. the bus was empty. roads in the area of 18th and fremont were shut down for a while in

investigate and clear the scene. a denver police officer shot monday responding to a burglary call has been treated and released from denver health. riechel i'd was shot in her lower left leg. officers returned fire, killing the suspect who had a lengthy and violent criminal history. >> shots fired, officer down. >> reporter: chaos broke out in the highlands when a burglary call turned into an officer-involved shooting. rachel ide was shot in the leg and released monday night. >> it's fortunate it wasn't more critical. >> reporter: fortunate considering the violence that unfolded at multiple scenes. the burglary suspect engaged in multiple shootouts and carjacked a driver at gunpoint. he was police. investigators say it's

police say he is 25-year-old alfanso pedia. both suspects had lengthy criminal records. republicans on the senate judish iary committee are refusing to hold any vote. they say it protects the will of the american people following the death of scalia. expected to show up in the presidential race races. colorado could take in campaignees if president obama holds his promise to close guantanamo bay. >> reporter: we've known for a while that colorado is on the short list of locations where detainees may end up. the federal government has been looking at the super max

federal prison in canyon city. >> we're not identifying a specific facility in this plan. we're outlining what options look like. >> reporter: what the president made clear is that he wants to get this done before he is out of office early next year. you'll recall this was in his campaign in the 2008 race before he was ever president. he was promising to close it. it's been a frustration to the administration that they haven't been able to get this done. now he's pitching this plan to congress which appears it's not going to fly. that leaves possibly an administrative option through executive powers. but that could be frustrated by a law against transferring these detainees to the united states. republicans in colorado are harping on that point saying that today's proposal only singles the president may be willing to circumvent congress and ignore the law he approved in order to fulfill his campaign promises.

grave threat to colorado. if you're looking for counter balance from michael bennett, you won't find it. he's not using that fiery rhetoric. but he's also opposed. "this plan has done nothing to change my mind. these detainees should not be transferred to colorado. likely any place the administrative looks, he's going to get that kind of reception. it remains unclear how there's a path to getting this done before obama is out of office." the president's plan seeks up to $475 million in construction costs which he says will be offset by as much as $180 million per year in operating cost savings. the toddler of a man killed in the aurora theater shooting is running for state senate. tom

democrat in a heavily republican district. he has lobbied the legislature for limits on high-capacity gun magazines and testified for an unsuccessful bill to remove colorado's requirement that death penalty verdicts be unanimous. we are just a week away from super tuesday. today several politicians and activists here in colorado stepped forward on the democrat side to endorse their preferred candidate. >> reporter: it's the final stretch heading into super tuesday. and caucus goers on the democratic side are getting an earful. >> they are working around the clock between now and tuesday. >> reporter: today the presidential campaigns for hillary clinltdon and bernie sanders both released lists of new endorsements in colorado. each campaign targeting different groups of voters.

prevention advocate whose father was killed at columbine. >> she's the only candidate that appears to be willing to stand up to the gun lobby. >> reporter: she is endorsing hillary clinton. along with three other coloradans who lost their loved ones to gun violence. our political analyst says clinton's focus on gun control sheer by design. >> that just happens to be an issue that she claims she is stronger than bernie sanders. and that is gun control. >> thank you for joining us. >> reporter: at a gathering at the state capitol, bernie sanders got endorsements from elected leaders. >> mayor, congressman, and u.s. senator, those years have primed him well for this battle. >> reporter: the diverse determines are something the pursuing. matter? >> they can.

severe weather bringing with it high winds and tornadoes. a tornado watch until tomorrow morning. several tornadoes have been spotted including one that tore the roof off a gold's gym in prairieville, louisiana. there are no reports of any serious injuries inside the gym. there are reports of injuries elsewhere in louisiana. sexual transmission of zika appears to be more common than doctors thought. the centers for disease control and prevention is investigating 14 new cases of sexual transmission of the virus. some of those cases involve pregnant women. they advise expectant mothers to use condoms or abstain from sex if their partner has traveled to areas where zika is spreading.

involving a beach or the ocean. absolutely. although why leave colorado? the weather is gonna be spectacular. fast-moving storm system, 1-3 inch was snow to denver. a foot along the foothills. beneficial moisture we desperately need. a beautiful evening outside. clear sky, light wind, few clouds. and 43 degrees in denver today. slightly warmer in southeastern colorado. numbers seasonal for this time of year. not just a few degrees shy of where we should be. at the airport, current temperature is 40 with winds north at 13. starting to ease somewhat, our most recent storm is out of here. and we're left with clear sky, light winds, and a nice afternoon. we're tracking some scattered showers off to the east of us. north and west with some of our web cams, nothing but blue sky. beautiful conditions with the area. and snowfall, not bad for

inches and we're close to a foot. almost 4 inches above average for the month, and 3 inches above average for the year. cold air colliding with warm gulf moisture creating a severe weather scenario that includes heavy flooding rain, tornadoes, lightning, and large hail. up to the north, it's all winter weather advisories. flash flooding through atlanta where airport delays are likely. severe weather just off to the east of us tomorrow as will this area of low pressure. we set our sights on a weak front that will drop in. really not more than just a wind shift around the area. all the heavy moisture will stay to the south and east of us. so we will enjoy sunshine for the next few days and a nice warming trend. low 50s expected tomorrow. also on thursday. a few leftover snow showers in the high country. blowing snow over the high terrain. with clearing skies, that means a cold night

playoff seed, i think, through the kubiak system. it is tailor-made for him. they want the quarterback to move, to roll out. he's very good at that. not fast but he can move. he can throw on the run. he has a better arm than peyton manning. he can do more damage on offense, have more impactful plays on offense. and if he stays within himself, doesn't turn the ball over, as he did at the end of the season when he did get his chance to start. i think he can get into the postseason. whether he has the poise to come through in the playoffs, that remains to be seen. as we know, he has yet to get a chance at all in the playoffs. even this year he got the rug pulled out from under him. manning replaced him. george carl is back in nuggets. as long as he doesn't half.
