this incident involved park county deputies. and one suspect was also shot and killed. for the latest, let's go to jeremy who is following this story right now in the information center. jeremy, what other information do we know right now? >> hi there, tarhonda, the shooting happened this morning, it is in an neighborhood called friendship ranch, just north of the bailey area. this is not a densely populated area. only about 8,000 people live here. and three deputies were shot. one of those deputies has been fatally shot. a suspect is also dead. it is unk known who that suspect -- unknown who that suspect is. the other two deputies who were shot have nonlife-threatening injuries. it is still unknown what prompted this encounter between law enforcement and this suspect. so far, names have not been released. the jefferson county sheriff's office and the colorado bureau of investigation is also on the scene to investigate. there is a press briefing

here in the next 30 minutes. and we will have crews at that briefing. so certainly a developing situation out there. and now, my colleague, anastasia bolton is live in the bailey area. anastasia, what can you tell us on the ground there? >> reporter: so jeremy, we are several miles removed from the scene, the location for which you have mentioned. we are here at the fire station in bailey, because this is where the briefing will be held at 12:30. now, people who listen to the scanners, as do we, have an idea of what could have happened, and what and who may be involved. but honestly, i can tell you that, we don't report those, that information, until it is proven by at least several sources, and confirmed by the people investigating on the ground. so as jeremy has mentioned, two with nonlife-threatening injuries, in park county. one has been shot. the suspect is shot as well.

briefing at 12:30 this afternoon. we expect the colorado bureau of investigation to be here, obviously park county authorities, jefferson county deputies are here to help as well. so we will bring you the information, from the briefing, as soon as it begins. >> okay, anastasia, we're glad you're in place and we will be looking to you for more information. i'm following you on twitter as well for updates. thank you. the planned parenthood shooter will go before a judge today. as attorneys discuss his mental competency. the shooter wants to fire his lawyers and represent himself. the judge ordered a mental exam to determine if the attacker is capable of doing so. he admitted to killing three people, inside a colorado springs planned parenthood last november. the court appearance is at 1:30, we will have more on what happens tonight on 9 news. the denver district attorney's office has determined that an officer who was hurt in a shootout was justified in firing back. that shooting left officer tony lopez severely injured.

pulled over jason wood. court documents show wood shot officer lopez a number of times. officer lopez also shot and hit wood before wood took off in a car. he was arrested a short time later. officer lopez is still recovering from his injuries. a teen accused of using social media to threaten schools near colorado springs is in police custody. investigators say that teen posted a message, warning students not to go to school on the after-school app. now, that message forced schools in ellicot district to cancel classes on monday. the teen faces several charges and it includes attempting to influence a public official which is a felony. we have learned that alcohol is suspected as being a factor, in this crash, 225 and lot of kennedy baseball field. those two women were thrown from the vehicle. ambulances took both women to

injuries. on the campaign trail, it is three wins in a row for dold trump. he has been declared the winner of nevada's republican caucuses. there. he also won in south carolina. and new hampshire. nevada. as wdecided this morning that marco rubio edged out ted cruz by less than 2,000 votes. ben carson and john kasich came in fourth and fifth respectively. it is the democrats turn next. primary is saturday. hillary clinton and bernie sanders pushed their issues in analysts say clinton is counting on a strong showing in southern states. >> less than a week away from super tuesday. on march 1, colorado help pick the republican and democratic state. g.o.p. winner. that means there is no statewide republican winner to

democrats could see a higher turnout in colorado this year. because of that close race between sanders and clinton. severe storms made their alabama overnight. at least three people have been killed. two of them were at a mobile home park in con vent, louisiana. abc's jacob rascon brings us more from that site. >> reporter: this is what is park. of rubble. some of them thrown blocks from where they were originally, two people died, here, and more than 30 were hospitalized. seven of those critical. and they have been searching for three people, missing who may be trapped in the rubble. >> a desperate search for survivors. hope nearly lost. some 150 mobile homes ripped to shreds. trucks twisted like toys and neighborhoods wiped off the map. dozens were injured. many publicked from the rubble.

but we are looking at a pretty mild weekend forecast to come. well, taking a quick little tour of some of the web cams that i just love. this one in boulevard ever, showcasing -- boulder, showcasing the bright blue skies and the snowfall sitting on the flat irons. downtown denver, looking lovely. and no clouds to speak of. and we are now sitting at 48 degrees. out at d.i.a. a little warmer in greeley. how about 52. some stronger winds in the northeastern plains pumping the temperatures in the 40s and 50s. still struggling to get out of the teens teens in steamboat 40 at the airport. the wind out of the northeast at 15 miles an hour. not nearly as bad as what the plains are dealing with. here in the 9 backyard, the temperature readings coming at us in the 40s. 44 degrees. nothing we can't handle but the winds are really picking up. out to the eastern plains, as we are looking at a cold front, that is going to be moving into the area. and here it is, you can see it, dropping in, across the southeast, or northeastern

a weak storm system producing light snowfall throughout the dakotas, high pressure situated to the west, and the sunshine in texas and then our storm system from yesterday, really wreaking some havoc out there across the midwest and into the eastern seaboard. wind gusts in that 30 mile-an- hour range. in greeley, and again, helping to warm them up. and then we are talking 40 mile- an-hour speed os thrust in scott bluff. as this front digs in, we not only are going to be dealing with the gustier winds but also the possibility of some high fire danger. red flag warnings will be in place, throughout about 5:00 this evening. and humidity, less than 15%. and we can see all of that moisture, with that storm that moved through yesterday, so it is still pretty dry out there, with the gusty winds and thing could take off. out to the west, pretty quiet. you could see the storm system bringing in strong rain showers and thunderstorms out to the coastline. meanwhile, snowfall wrapping in through the chicago st. louis area and the great lakes. with that being said, we have storms. isolated tornadoes.

investigate and work the crime scene, as well as the a.t.f., they are going to help as well, the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms and explosives. this happened about 4.9-miles from where i am standing right now in a place called friendship ranch. we are removed from the scene, not because they're blocking us from being there but because this is where the news conference is going to be. now, as we see at the moment, we understand that the jefferson county s.w.a.t. team was on their way to assist with what is going on at the scene in that location. enforcement have been hurt and shot, in the last several months, namely just this week, a denver police officer was shot in the lower leg. she survived but this just happened a couple of days ago. >> it seems like we are doing so many of these reports and anastasia, you cause you are our crime and justice reporter. ground and we appreciate you us. >> thanks, tarhonda. let's switch gears and talk to dr. john right now and show you this video that is just incredible. a guy checking out, e cigarette ex bloameds in his pocket. -- explodes in his pocket. a battery inside of it exploded. it happened in kentucky. the man has second-degree burns on his leg because of the incident. we talked about e cigarettes before. they are a big industry. about $2.8 billion market. some people think they are less harmful than regular cigarettes and can help people quit but health experts are really researching this. and it is a big thing called smoker's lung that it might

and dr. john is lear to talk to us more about -- here is talk to us more about this. and people shouldn't just assume that e cigarettes are safe. >> obviously if it burns in your pocket, that is a big health concern. but it causes other health problems as well. as a matter of fact, researchers at brown university say e cigarettes are billed as a safe alternative, but they may not actually be in cases. now the researchers are trying to figure out if e cigarettes make those who use them more susceptible to more infections or cancer and what they say depend canning can -- depending on the e cigarette e tract, it could have problems. >> and some cigarettes that don't have nicotine, and some who do not, they end up with nicotine in them. >> some have propylene gly koll and ethylene glycol and they can be toxic in large doses. >> and it is unclear to

have additives and researchers say some of the flavors for e cigarettes are even more toxic than the norn flavored one and that is probably the big concern. we found out in january that some e cigarettes that have flavors have diacetyl, popcorn lungs, bad lung problems or benzyldahyde. and the only cure for it is a lung transplant. so you're putting things in your lungs that you don't want to put in your lungs and the problem is, some of these ingredients, that are on the label aren't in there. and like some things say nonnicotine and they have nicotine. >> there is so much that we don't know about what is in those e cigarettes. >> yes. >> and the fda has really just started to examine it and try to regulate it. >> and we always learn in medical school, day one, you don't want to put anything in your lungs, explodes in yourpocket. okay? >> true. >> thanks, dr. john. and what else we are going to be talking about today is a big surprise that happened on the ice. hockey fans are going to love this one.

they are providing patrol duties in the area. very taxing on the park county sheriff's office on their resources. they are providing additional patrol duties in the area. and they sent in the jefferson county bomb squad along with the s.w.a.t. team, the jefferson county regional s.w.a.t. team to provide vanessa -- provide assistance at the team. that is an abundance of caution to make sure everybody in the area is safe. we had an opportunity to sit down with the sheriff a few minutes ago. and obviously, while he was seemingly very upset, he is in full support of his team and providing amazing leadership at this very difficult time. as we are doing this press briefing, he is headed to saint anthony's hospital where he will be with a member of the park county sheriff's office, who was shot during the incident. very strongly, he felt he

so he is going to stay with them for a while. and then he is going to head back up here. we will hopefully have a briefing a little bit later, where the sheriff will be with us. but please understand that this is a very fluid situation. his concern right now is for the deputy, his staff, and of course the community. and so what he would want us to relay is this. it is a dark day. and he would ask for prayers. and thoughts. and just focusing everything you have on support of the park county sheriff's office. >> can you tell us a little bit more about the suspect? >> we will start here. we don't have a lot of information on the suspect. we have, as i stated, a number of investigators that are processing the scene. that is a lot of the work that will be done this afternoon. we want to learn why. we want to learn the ins and outs of what happens during that process and the circumstances surrounding that. >> you don't have a name?

>> in this situation, it is an abundance of caution. we wanted to just make sure everything is secure. we don't have specific information about what may have occurred at the scene. we just want to ensure that we are using all of the resources at the ready to make sure everyone is safe. >> you don't have a name of the suspect? >> we do not have the name of the suspect at this point. we are still sorting through that. once we get confirmation of that area, we will be sure to relay that. >> and i know you are working to identify who this person is, but on the scanners, when responding, law enforcement said he was -- >> i cannot confirm the chatter on the radio at this point. it is very preliminary in this investigative process and it would be very unfair to comment on preliminary hearing. so we are going to hold on that, and it is certainly something that is a priority, as part of this investigation, and we will rely that as soon as we have that. >> can you tell us why there were three deputies -- >> iewb, you know, i don't know about the protocols of the
