10:00 pm
it's the night voters get to have their voices heard in the presidential race, lines in some towns in the city out the door with all the people who came to caucus. results are coming in. we'll put them into context with what they mean in the race for each party's nomination. >> the first confirmed cases of zika in colorado, how the patients contracted the virus and where. >> a long awaited return home, an american astronaut makes a trip back to earth after nearly a year in space. lance armstrong has a candid and open conversation -- >> lance armstrong has a candid and open conversation about doping to a group of students at c. >> and rockies made it harder to -- at cu. >> and rockies played it harder to hit a homer at home. 9news starts now. super tuesday in colorado where democrats after standing in line for hours are feeling the bern. senator bernie sanders is the

democratic caucus handily beating hillary clinton. colorado gop leaders passed on having a winner picked. bernie sanders focused on colorado and it paid off with 59% of the vote to hillary clinton's 40%. not all that unlike eight years ago when clinton lost here by a made margin to then senator barack obama. >> the democrats had delegates at stake in our state and supporters turned out across the front range in droves to make their voices heard from caucus locations in denver to lakewood, evergreen and fort collins. we heard from people caught in long lines. some cases they were even turned away. patrick massel showed us the people that showed up at lincoln junior high in fort collins. the crowd exceeded the maximum allowed by fire crowd and everyone had to leave. luckily it was a warmer than average night in early march, so people tried to continue to caucus outside. in city after city and location after location people sent us pictures of the lines and crowds at their caucus sites.

candidates for months it was the voters to be the ones to speak. we have many more pictures on 9news.com and the facebook page. if you have your own to send, we'd like to share them. brandon rittiman will help us look deeper into the results tonight in just a bit. first we go to steve staeger at byers middle school in denver where the lines were long as they were at caucus sites across the state. steve? >> reporter: they wrapped around the school. i want to give you a number we got in the last hour. they were expecting about 1,200 people inside this school. they got close to 3,000. so they more than doubled it. they were expecting about 20% of each precinct to show up. obviously it was a whole lot more than that and it created a bit of a logistics nightmare. registration and check-in took a lot longer than expected and things didn't get started for about an hour and a half after it was all really supposed to get started. now a lot of people were encouraged by that. others were just downright frustrated.
10:03 pm
i tried to get here a little early, but even then we waited in line about 40 minutes. if they don't have time for us, then that's great. that's perfect for them, but at the end of date for those people that are waiting that's awesome and they really want to be here. >> it moved very, very slowly. we were in line over an hour. we have been here totally now for three hours and as we said, i've been to riots that were better organized than this. >> reporter: a lot of grumbling as you could tell from a lot of people on their way out here just because of how long this all took. once everything got started things moved very quickly, but it was that hour and a half wait after the whole event was actually supposed to get started, that was the real big problem here. we did hear a lot of people walking out saying they like caucuses and it's a good opportunity to have voices heard, but at the same time a primary might be a little bit more organized. back to you.
10:04 pm
steve staeger, thanks so much. colorado's republicans caucused tonight still just without making a headline about being a national contender. state party held national rules bounding colorado delegates to their national candidates. the state and local candidates will later be bound to candidates ahead of the national convention. the state chairman told me he does not regret passing up the chance to make news tonight. >> the total numbers are very high, well above 60,000 which i think is just indicate tough of how important the election is -- indicative of how important the election is and people want to express their opinion. they still have to stay engaged between now and april 9th when we complete the state assembly. it's likely maybe a large number of delegates will be allocated directly to a candidate and we could have an interesting role in this whole thing. >> with donald trump having such a successful night, i asked chairman house his opinion on the trump phenomenon. >> people are just upset about
10:05 pm
making enough progress. there's so slow movement on the economy, on jobs. i think they're just upset on the average politician. i think that's why bernie is winning in colorado as well. i think people are just looking for something from the outside. >> house when asked enthusiastically said that he for president. nationally trump has been declared the winner in alabama, arkansas, georgia, massachusetts, tennessee and virginia. oklahoma. marco rubio picked up the caucuses in minnesota. the verdict is still out in alaska and vermont on the republican side of the ledger. hillary clinton won alabama, arkansas, georgia, massachusetts, texas and virginia. sanders won his homestate of vermont, colorado and oklahoma. trump's victories extended his delegate lead over his opponents, 220, double the totals of cruz and rubio combined, far short of the more
10:06 pm
clinton has three times the number of delegates as sanders at this point including the delegates she won tonight plus superdelegates who have committed to support her. she's more 1/3 of the way for the needed delegates to be the democratic nominee. >> 9news political reporter brandon rittiman has been watching the results and talking with our party experts on both sides. things seem to be shaking out a bit. brandon. >> sanders has cleaned up and if you look at the map on 9news.com, if you look at the front range, none of them are blue except for broomfield and arapahoe county. these green areas that you see on here, that's bernie sanders winning and we knew he was going to take some of these areas around college campuses, larimer county going about 2/3 for him, boulder county 54-45. the surprise tonight really is when you go down to a police like here in denver -- a place
10:07 pm
denver county reflecting that same trend we would have expected in a busier college town. he's doing that in some of the other places around the state, also places like adams county, weld county where hillary clinton might have hoped to have been able to draw some support, just not going her way tonight, so very interesting to watch this all shaking out. 9news political experts james mejia and kelly mar were with us tonight and given us their take-aways. >> colorado bucked the trend. the turnout for dems i think is proven to be up and the dems were very excited to get out for bernie. i think hillary was organized, but bernie spending media money by 3-1 over clinton i think made a big difference in this state. >> what's going to end up happening is the democrats are going to have to learn what it's like to have a large like disenfranchised group of people who are sick of the establishment and i think it's going to substantially change
10:08 pm
they've got here in the state. >> kelly mayher knows something about that. the anti-establishment mood is stronger on the gop where trump has been cleaning up and looks like he could become the nominee. bernie sanders has a little work to do before he gets that far, adele, even though he won a handful of states. hillary clinton cleaned up on delegates. we'll have to see how the rest of march goes. >> thank you. in just a few minutes all of you get to vote regardless of party. the question is the caucus format the best way to pick favorite for president in colorado? you'll see the results on your screen as they come in live. voting starts shortly. still not much information about a shooting that left a man critically wounded this afternoon in north denver. it happened around 3:00 outside a home in columbine and 35th avenue. harrington elementary school went on lockdown for a short time.

information about the gunman. law enforcement across colorado are sending their condolences to the last las animas county sheriff's office. a deputy was driving eastbound and veered across lanes and hit a parked car. hospital. he was 44 years old. the state health department confirms two people in colorado have been diagnosed with the zika virus. the agency says both people traveled to countries where zika is prevelant and that the cases were reported last week. both people are doing well. zika is most commonly spread through mosquito bites. doctors are emphasizing it's almost impossible for that to happen in colorado. only certain kinds of mosquitoes carry the virus and have never been reported here. >> we don't believe we have the possibility for local transmission which is where an infected mosquito would bite someone who is infected and then bite you and you would get
10:10 pm
>> doctors in brazil say there is enough evidence to suggest that zika is responsible for a condition that can cause smaller heads in infants whose mother has been infected. within the hour american astronaut scott kelly safely returned to earth. he's been living at the international space station for nearly a year, 340 days to be exact, new record for american space travel. his adventure is part of a larger study by nasa they believe will help mankind travel to mars and beyond. scientists are testing kelly to see how humans endure long term space missions. the capsule carrying kelly and two other crew members landed in kazakhstan about 30 minutes ago. he's being currently served a hearty helping of gravity. we'll check back in on caucus night here in colorado. >> lance armstrong talks openly on the cu campus and the mistakes he made and why he had to do it. >> kathy is looking at the forecast and another warm-up on the way. >> and take your hits, why the

while you may not have cast a ballot tonight, you can still vote. >> the question here asking on 9news.com/votenow, keep the caucuses, go back to the primary, looks like a lot of interest is in the primary method but a lot of concern about the costs because the state pays for primaries and the party pays for caucuses. >> with 1/3 of all voters in colorado being unaffiliated voters they're saying i'm left out of the process. >> doesn't chance there is a ballot question on that idea of open primaries coming up in november. tomorrow morning bernie sanders' campaign has called a breakfast for reporters where

his path forward despite hillary clinton's commanding lead. he can point to a couple wins tonight including in colorado where with 60% of the vote reported he has 58% to clinton's 41%. the delegate counts within the past 20 minutes the associated press moved vermont into donald trump's list of wins for tonight. he maintains a wide delegate lead over ted cruz and marco rubio, still quite a ways to reach the 1,200 needed for the gop nomination. clinton is up 3-1 on sanders when you count the superdelegates. again these are your party brass, party leaders, folks like our governor, denver mayor michael hancock, those folks, the superdelegates. they aren't bound to secretary clinton, but many have expressed their support for her. president obama will be the first sitting president to travel to cuba since calvin coolidge attended a pan american conference in 1928. the white house set the date. the president will be in havana march 22nd. coincidentally the tampa bay rays play the cuban national

it's the first visit to cuba by a major league baseball team since baltimore went there in 1999. blood doping in the sport of cycling was so prevalent in the late 1990s you couldn't win without it. the boulder daily camera reports lance armstrong was on the cu campus today talking candidly about his use of performance enhancing drugs to a group of students. >> then once the ball started rolling and success started, this wave was created. so that's what enabled them to say all right, this guy is way out and we're going to make him pay. that's what they did. >> armstrong was there to speak to students taking a course called introduction to sports governance. it covers topics such as doping and the economics of sports. athletic department leaders at cu want to create a center that focuses on the study of that topic.

9news backyard for this, the first full day of march. i'm meteorologist kathy sabine and just enough cloud cover around to make for a spectacular sunrise and sunset. keep the pictures coming. we so appreciate those. the upper level winds really coming in at a pretty good clip and did produce those wonderful cloud formations. those winds will lower down to the surface tomorrow and become a big part of our wednesday forecast. your morning drive time looking good, low to mid-40s from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. winds will increase, especially west of i-25 as early as 8:00 in the morning. winds southwest at 16 at dia but calm here in the 9news backyard. we have 44 degrees outside the studios. you know what? we don't have a lot to show you on the radar with this west to northwest flow, that downsloping wind event. it's really created temperatures above average. that's a trend that will continue through the rest of this week right into the weekend. even with that weak weather system that crossed the state yesterday we were 10 degrees cooler today but still about 10
10:18 pm
well, some changes now. high pressure shifting in response to low pressure offshore as this gradient tightening the jet stream lowers into northern colorado. we'll get a quick little burst of snow in the mountains and with the winds developing over some of the higher passes like berthoud and loveland pass, we'll have some areas of blowing snow in the morning and on the plains high fire danger with the gusty winds, low relative humidity values and above average readings. we do have concerns for high fire danger for much of the upcoming weeks. winds are picking up in southeastern wyoming with high wind warnings posted, a trend continuing the next 72 hours. most of the precip and energy is staying north of us compliments of the location of the jet, but the biggest storm system fueled by that jet stream looking at this cold air marched into chicago, and a lot of rain headed for new york and boston, airport delays expected. a fast moving system --

will impact much of the eastern seaboard tomorrow. we've got much of the energy staying north of us now. it changes next week with a pattern shift. cold air stays north and east of us. we enjoy a warming trend. we'll see 60s tomorrow, but again with warmer conditions we'll see gusty winds pick up as well. so with the wind, quick blast of snow, you'll have some difficult travel on i-70 a short time tomorrow, probably 9:30 to noon tomorrow. then conditions improve, maybe even a few light showers on the far eastern plains. look how quick this little wave comes through. then skies clear, beautiful conditions and really just a nice week coming up, not a lot of snow in the high country, but we'll freshen up the snow pack for aspen, vail. we'll see maybe 4-inch of snow if we're lucky of 24 in frisco, 34 the low in grand junction, 28 in greeley, 35 in colorado springs. 70s for highs in southeastern colorado, way governor average for denver, greeley, fort collins. i-70 corridor temperatures will

the winds are the big story, blackhawk, nederland, grand lake highs between 42 and 48 degrees on wednesday, almost halfway through the week. tonight calm, partly cloudy, lows 32. winds increase west of i-25 as early as the morning and snift out over the urban corridor and eventually the eastern plains -- shift out over the urban corridor and eventually the eastern plains increasing the fire danger as we are dry, mild and gusty tomorrow afternoon. thing get better. thursday and friday it's comfortable, temperatures above average leading us to 70 and sunshine on sunday. the series of weather systems next week right now looks like rain, yup, rain monday into tuesday in this march, our snowiest month. it's going to be fun to forecast. reflections tonight compliments of john roper, another great shot coming in showing us what it will look like in the foothills tomorrow with areas of blowing snow. doesn't that just make you cold looking at that picture? >> i love that. that's spectacular.

period and the avs lose 6-3. broncos slapped a franchise tag on super bowl mvp von miller today. 9news insider mike klis explains why on the pages of his notebook. >> reporter: it was necessary because the broncos and von miller's agent are too far away from reaching a settlement on this case and they would risk in the open market von miller would then on march 9th be able to go on the open market and there are some teams out there like jacksonville with 80 million of cap space, the oakland raiders with more than 70 million in cap space. they could offer up to 25 million a year to someone like von miller. the broncos would lose him if they didn't tag him. this way it's maybe not the best case scenario, certainly not for von miller because it's a one year deal when he wants a multi-year contract, but it's the best case scenario for bronco fans because it does assure that the broncos will

colorado state pueblo running back cameron mcdondell is considered a long shot for the nfl because he played at a division 2 school, but 9news sports reporter aaron matas explains why you might not want to count him out. >> reporter: he has something to prove. >> show them you're just as good as those d1 backs. really it's just going out and playing my game, i guess. >> reporter: what is your game? >> it's a little bit of everything. my game is everything. >> reporter: cameron won a state championship at columbine in 2011 despite huge talent choosing to play his college football at d2 csu pueblo. >> grade tweeze i wasn't going to -- gradewise i wasn't going to make the first year cut-offs for d1. at pueblo i knew i'd get to play right away. high school i messed around the first few years and had to play catch-up the last few years to get the grades up to even get into schools. >> reporter: mcdondell did

pueblo. he won a national championship, was named first team all american and is set to graduate in may. cameron is also working out twice a day because he's ready to use his criminology degree, but he has another goal. >> definitely to get on an nfl team, doesn't matter which team it is. it would be good to play here at home, but any of the 32 teams is perfect. >> reporter: at an upcoming tryout scouts will grade his athletic performance, but at least this time he knows he has the marks of the classroom to fall back on. aaron matas, 9news. nuggets had the night off. rockies are tired of losing games because of cheap home runs and so they're raising the outfield's fences, 8 more feet in right center and 5 down the left field line, fabulous idea except for the fact it will be tougher for the rox to hit homers now, also. sure hope they thought of that. >> it's a change that is going to affect both teams most

the course of a long season in a ballpark. we'll kind of find out together exactly what type of effect it has over the course of this year. tonight on social media we asked you for other brilliant ideas which would help the rockies win more games. among the submissions forfeit all road games, stay home and rest, go 81-81. add a party deck on the visitors dugout. raise the outfield wall around the coors field border to 55 feet and make donald trump pay for it. some truly clever people out there. von miller has got $14.1 million a one year contract instead of the long one he was hoping for, but they still have a few months to negotiate. so they could come up before next season starts with a -- look at those. >> is that the 20 you owe me? thank you. >> yeah it, is a 20.
