subject of a study involving researchers here in colorado. a pair of bad overnight crashes to tell you about first. the first happened around 1:30 at broadway and louisiana. the driver was taken to louisiana after his car rolled in the northbound lane of broadway. the second happened shortly after 2:00. the driver flipped his suv and knocked down a traffic light at colfax and cherry. police believe he was driving drunk. it is 6:01 on this wednesday morning. good morning, everybody. thanks for being with us. it's already pretty warm, and the sun is just going to peek out. marty coniglio is in the backyard. warm but a repeat of the wind today. >> it's already in and near the foothills. we're seeing wind gusts between 25 and 50 miles per hour already. they're starting the move down. we see boulder now up to 36 mile-per-hour winds. that's pushed temperatures into the 50s at the base of the foothills. now, the farther you get away from the foothills, the cooler

we have 30s and 40s on the east side of town. way downtown. as it does, it's going to warm everybody up. we'll be in the lower 60s to middle 60s again. 63, 64 degrees. the issue is going to be the wind. you're going to notice it. it's going to get stronger throughout the day. it is also snowing in the mountains. it's hanging right up here along the front range. continental divide. snow also getting hung up on the flat tops and throughout central colorado. most of the northern and central mountain resorts from through summit county, winter park and into the steamboat springs area. for the next couple of hours, we'll start getting everybody into the same areas. we'll end up in the lower 60s. coming up in just a couple minutes, we'll talk about the wind.

the wind is already a factor, amelia. you heard from somebody on the west side of town, it's pretty strong. >> lou was saying he was sitting in a parked car, gusts came through, and he legitimately thought something hit his vehicle. thank goodness nothing did. it's going to be windy. boulder to i-25, 60 miles per hour. pretty much average there. don't forget the bike path is open, but it's going to be a very gusty ride if you're going to opt for that ride along u.s. 36. security wait time, 15-20 minutes. all lots have open spaces today. your speeds on pena are doing just fine this morning. metro wide freeways are calm and clear. we still have cleanup under way. repair work for the downed light poll across clairmont street. gary, as we look at the downtown speeds, we're off to a really nice start. we're in the green.

turnouts ever. tarhonda thomas is joining me. i guess that's the evidence of a good turnout, tarhonda. >> absolutely. experts thought it could bring out record clouds to caucus in colorado. from the look of things and from the look of people sitting on the floor, they were right. lines stretched around blocks. fort collins, crowds reached such big fire capacity that the fire marshal had to make people leave, and voters decided to caucus outside. it's part of the democratic process. as they spoke up about their candidates, in the end, they gave bernie sanders an edge in colorado. sanders has 58% of the vote. vote. even with the long lines, some participants say the caucusing process wasn't that bad. though it got others thinking about states that hold primaries with ballots and not so large crowds. >> i guess a primary might be

it's interesting to see all these people out. you have conversations with people voting for bernie and for hillary. >> so you might be wondering why we're not mentioning what republican won colorado. no one did. the state party decided not to declare a winner. that means their delegates don't have to be attached to a particular candidate right now. this race is changing minute by minute. maybe that may end up a good thing for them. >> nationally, donald trump and hillary clinton were the big winners for their preponderatetive parties. trump won alabama, arkansas, georgia, massachusetts, tennessee, vermont, and virginia. ted cruz won his home state texas and oklahoma and alaska. marco rubio won the caucuses in minnesota. clinton won in seven states. alabama, arkansas, georgia, massachusetts, tennessee, texas, and virginia. sanders won in his home state

colorado as we were talking about it. also minnesota and oklahoma. >> numbers are still coming coming in this morning, the last we checked, donald trump has 285 delegates. cruz has 161 and marco rubio 87. that's still far short of the 1200 needed to win the nomination. it's going to be interesting to see if there's a contested race at the convention. hillary clinton has a commanding lead on the democratic side, roughly three times the lead sanders has. at this point, her totals include the delegates won last night and the super delegates. they're allowed to vote whoever they wish. they're party leaders and vips. they're heavily in favor of clinton. she's on her way to the delegates needed to become the democratic nominee. it's 6:07. the search is on this morning for a driver that struck a person in denver and then took off.

denver police say the victim has serious injuries. investigators say a black lincoln sedan with license plate number pled the scene. the car has damage to the passenger side mirror. a man accused of shooting his own father in the head is going to appear before a judge in arapaho county. jonathan ryan is said to have shot his 71-year-old father, killing him, last year. we don't know what led up to the shooting. ryan does face several charges, including first-degree murder. >> it is 6:08 now. astronaut scott kelly will get his first home cooked meal tonight. he's back on earth after 340 days in space. he hopes to be at his brother's house by dinnertime. kelly and a russian cosmonaut returned from the international space station yesterday. this is video as they landed in kazakhstan. the pair traveled 144 million

throughout the day and just get stronger and stronger throughout the afternoon. 30-50 mile-per-hour gusts combined with humidity levels going down into the teens this afternoon. it prompted the weather service to issue a red flag warning from the front range and all of eastern colorado from 11:00 this morning to 7:00 this evening. that means if the fire starts, it could have explosive behavior and just take off in the heat, the dry weather, and the wind. greg? >> got to be careful. thank you. a denver city council committee looks into whether or not there are too many marijuana businesses in the city right now. the marijuana moratorium committee is hearing testimony from groups. right now there's a halt to new applications for marijuana business licenses until they can come up with a recommendation. today smart colorado is planning to testify on the impact of marijuana on youth. some big changes to yosemite national park overnight all thanks to a trademark dispute.

park's new concession supplier. the company who had the contract before was delaware north. they filed trademark on some of the names. they did it without telling anyone at the park. they even trademarked the name yosemite national park. that's not going to fly, but a legal dispute of the names has been going on for a time. a proposal on the table last week got rejected. they've had to temporarily rename places around the park. they're trying not to confuse visitors, but if you've been a long term visitor, you're going to be confused. >> that's pretty wild. it is 6:11 right now. a parent's job is to love and teach and always be there. that's the role foster parents take on for children in colorado who are without that support and direction. as we continue our series on foster care in coloradan we introduce you to the hazeltons,

snow is already falling in many mountain locations. we'll get a rain-snow mix in the mountain valleys because it is a relatively warm system coming in. show showing up noosely.

inches of snow that affect is in full force. some of them will pull over onto the east side with the gusty winds, but most of that is not going the make it down to the ground because of these strong drying winds. 40s, 50s in the foothills. strong 30-50 mile-per-hour winds. sunny down south and out west. we'll decrease that mountain snow as we go through the day. you will see these little pockets of showers over the plains. too much wind for that rain to make it down to the ground. northern mountains, looking at some decent snow today. nice to see that happen. down in the valleys, a little rain snow, not a big thing. we'll go with 40s there. 50s and 60s in the western valleys. mid-60s into the 70s.

kids go back to class today in a school in ohio. two days ago a boy shot two students in a school cafeteria. today teachers and staff will be riding on buses, waiting outside school to assure kids and welcome them back. the 14-year-old is in a juvenile detention center. he's denying the charges. well, police say that an alleged rapist in indiana claimed to be a police officer. so that's why his victim let him get into the home. john magnus faces several charges, including rape and impersonating a police officer. he allege lid knocked on the door of the victim's house and announced he was a cop. when the woman saw he wasn't in

results mean for colorado and the presidential race. new this morning, colorado skier lindsey vonn is now ending her world cup skiing season even though she's in position to win her fifth overall title. turns out the injury she got in this crash was worse than thought. she slid off the course during the super g. she tweeted that now she knows it was not just one hairline fracture but three fractures, and she's now calling them substantial. she still raced the next day but placed 13 in the alpine combined event. she called this one of the hardest decisions she's had to make during her career. breaking news right now, we just learned indonesia was struck by a powerful earthquake. it happened hundreds of miles outside sumatra. it registered -- authorities are now warning residents that the quake could trigger a tsunami. we'll keep you up to date with information as soon as it becomes available.

it's going to be another warm day in the 60s. plenty of wind with it. that means high fire danger. >> take you up to highway 285, windy point. it has not been too bad so far. the winds north of that location in the foothills have been strong. we'll see it kick up. this is rain and snow. closed down through the high terrain. this is the same system as this cuts through. that's when you're going to start to see the wind increase around here. now, by the way, four mountain areas, we're looking somewhere on the order of 1-4-inches of snow. mainly west of the continental divide. some of that rain and snow will blow over into the eastern higher terrain of the front range mountains and foothills. again, above 9, 10,000 feet, you will get a little accumulation of snow. i will check cameron pass and see how things are going. it's all about winds. 30-50 miles per hour from mid-

that is going to elevate fire danger. it already has temperatures quite warm. 30s, 40s, 50s. we'll be pushing 60 degrees already by 10:00 this morning. looking across the state today, rain and snow in the mountain valleys. temperatures popping up into the 60s and 70s in eastern colorado. humidity will dive. fire danger will spike. i will have an update on the red flag warning for extreme fire danger in a few moments. it is dry. the city. we're starting to see our i-70 change. we'll tell you what. we'll see reduced speeds if country. right now, metro wide, not too much to complain about. very standard delays stacking in north of downtown right around the mouse trap. southbound 25. also here along 76. now, our south and east -- one crash in place near 88th at i-

blocking anything across the freeway. as marti mentioned, the snow is coming in to the west side and i-70 will be affected. most of that snow fall is coming down near georgetown. we'll see cloud cover. right about now a calm, clear drive as you head up toward i- 70. >> amelia, thank you. while some states have primaries, colorado is unique in that it has a caucus. it's an opportunity for voters to openly talk about their candidates. it appears a lot of people wanted to do some talking last night. huge crowds showed up at caucus sites for the democrats. some saying the experience was inconvenient. others saying they waited as as long as it took. in the end, it led to a win for bernie sanders. i'm in the information center with tarhonda thomas who is breaking down all the results for us this morning. >> cory, we're getting the numbers in.

he has closer to 59%. that's with 98% of the precincts reporting in colorado. hillary clinton still stands at 41% of the vote. a lot of people were very eager to be part of the democratic caucuses, but some got more than they bargained for. >> it definitely seemed like 3,000 people. >> super tuesday created super long lines in colorado. >> we have been here totally now for three hours. >> at east high school, the lines stretched down colfax. fort collins, too many people for the fire capacity. so this caucus was conducted outside. one viewer tweeting in true colorado fashion. experts had predicted that the race between hillary clinton and bernie sanders would bring larger than normal crowds, but it seems to come as a surprise to the state democratic party. >> they probably didn't expect this turnout. seems like they're doing the best they can. >> a rep says the crowds were larger than expected at some places. the wait was worth it for

>> at the end of the day, for those people waiting, that's awesome. they really want to be here. >> and it looks like sanders supporters were crowding in the most their votes and willingness to wait in line put sanders over the top in colorado. >> i'm glad that i can do it. >> while republicans in colorado did caucus, there was no winner. that's because the state republican party decided not to declare one. but there were plenty of big wins on the republican side. >> there were. that's for sure. donald trump's opponents remain determined to stop him, but trump is building steam after his big super tuesday win. trump took seven states, including alabama, arkansas, georgia, massachusetts, tennessee, vermont, and virginia. ted cruz won his home state of texas. that was a big win. he also won oklahoma and alaska. marco rubio won the caucus in minnesota. on the democratic side; hillary clinton won seven states.

massachusetts, texas, and virginia. bernie sanders won his home state of vermont and colorado, minnesota, oklahoma. numbers are still coming in, but at this point, donald trump now has 285 delegates. about 100 behind is ted cruz with 161. marco rubio, 87. that's still short of the more than 1200 needed to win the nomination. so it's not over. neither is this. hillary clinton does have a commanding delegate lead, roughly three times that of bernie sanders at this point. that includes super delegates who are allowed to vote for whomever they wish. they do at this time heavily favor clinton. she's more than a third of the way to the roughly 2400 delegates needed to be the nominee. new yorkers who don't vote may be shamed into casting their ballots. a council member wants to call out new yorker business pointing out how many elections they have missed. if this bill passes, all eligible voters would get a voter history report card

only one in four of registered new york voters voted in the 2014 general election. >> it's 6:38 right now. law enforcement across colorado are sending their condolences to the sheriff's office after one of their deputies died in a car crash. deputy travis russell was on out the. he was in trinidad driving eastbound on a road when he veered across the open lanes and hit a parked car. state troopers are not sure why. russell died at the hospital. he was 44 years old. it's 6:39 now. it was bound to happen and now it has. colorado has two cases of the zika virus. colleen ferreira join us. the chances of an outbreak are low here. >> very low. >> in fact, the mosquito carrying the virus doesn't live here in colorado. two people who got zika had traveled to one of those countries affected by the virus.

now, if you have recently traveled to a country that has zika, the cdc says go to your doctor and get the test done. they don't charge for testing but offices may charge an administration fee. now, the main concern for zika is for pregnant women. the cdc is testing whether having zika while pregnant could lead to any birth defects. now, the cdc told doctors to test every pregnant woman who has traveled to an infected area regardless if she has symptoms or not. >> they're extremely worried they may have done something they can't undo for their pregnancy. i think what needs to be taken into account is the fact that we don't know enough about it and not everyone that traveled got it. not everyone that gets it has the possibility of transmitting it to our baby. we don't know what those rates and numbers are right now. we can try to help patients watch for it. we don't have a lot that we can

>> that's difficult for many people to hear. there are so many unknowns when it comes to the zika virus. again, it's most commonly spread through mosquito bites. those carrying the virus have not been found in colorado. >> thank you very much. it is 6:40. demonstrators settled in for the night outside the u.s. supreme court. today the justices will debate whether laws restricting abortions for the purpose of promoting women's health is truly in the interest of public health. members of the christian defense coalition held a protest holding up signs, playing music, and singing together. >> we have some breaking business news to tell you about. sports authority has filed for bankruptcy protection. they did so this morning. noting that the company has debts that exceed more than a billion dollars. this is a chapter 11 filing. so the goal is to reorganize

it includes shutting down stores anciling assets. they could shut down all the stores if it does not meet the bankruptcy conditions. it's tough to find a new home around here. the trend is not changing. the numbers of homes available for sale hit a record low at the end of last month. the denver metro association of realtors reports that are only 3,963 active listings in february. that's down 6% from january and off 3% from february of 2015. so as we head into this very busy spring home buying season, expect more bidding wars and higher prices. talk about snow moving over to the east side of the continental divide. this is our webcam at cameron pass. high terrain, larimer county getting good snow at and above the 9,000-foot level. it's coming down over the divide. the main core of the system, as it gets to lower terrain, we'll get a few clouds out of it, but mostly wind.

denote cone. super tuesday ended with big wins for hillary clinton colorado. bernie sanders won big here on the democratic side. on the republican side, well, we just don't know. we're joined by our political experts, democrat james mcneil. >> so let's start with the sanders win. it was a big win. it was kind of expected but long lines, lots of energy. colorado goes big for bernie. is it too little too late nationally? >> i think it is. bernie had a great night last night. he had a good night. it allows him to have enough momentum to stay in the race, but in the winner take all states mid-march, he's going to have more problems. the numbers are starting to get so big i'm not sure he can catch hillary at this point. it might be too little too late. >> what do you think the republicans are making of the bern here in colorado?

speaks to the fact that coloradans are rejecting hillary clinton. you know, she's stiff and old and holier than thou and she thinks she deserves women's votes by just being a woman. and colorado is rejecting that. we're an independent western state. >> i'm guessing that's not the way you see it, though? >> not at all. >> hillary had a great showing last night. she won across the country. when you look at which group she won, she won every group except for white males. so great turnout in texas. questions about the latino vote, which is very much up for grabs across the country. great indicator for her coming up big in texas with a big latino vote there and swept the south with the high african- american vote. so those two populations bode very well for her moving into further votes down the line. >> kelly, we're just about out of time.

crash is coming in right along u.s. 76 where it turns into 28 28th street at pearl. now, this crash has been in a very busy part of the city. all of the other colors, that's what marty is going to tell us about. we've got weather out west. a crash rolls in blocking two left lanes between parker and dayton. even south of the crash we've got a heavy push. that cheery creek road is going to be a really nice alternate route. as for sixth avenue, we're up to a ten-minute drive between marty. >> around here we have the snow going on in the foothills and mountains of the front range. heaviest will be above 9,000 feet. could get an inch or two there. if you're below 9,000 feet, yes, you're getting rain and snow showers, a lot of it is going to melt here. east of the continental divide, it will go off and on throughout the day west of the continental divide.

going to be wind. we have dropped into the 20s and 30s. this morning, we have these rain and snow showers in the foothills that will slowly die down. the strong down sloping winds. the moisture can't make it down to the i20 corridor because it's so dry. we pop into the 60s from fort collins in loveland down toward the metro area. 40s and 50s in the foothills. today, statewide. above 9,000 feet. that increases. it will go on the other side of the continental divide. 60s in the front range north and western valleys, 70s down south. for us today, windy and warm, extreme fire dang we are the highs in the low 60s. windy conditions tonight as we clear out. in our planning forecast, we stay warm into the weekend.
