9 news reporter matt joins us now from that small community. >> reporter: kyle, that's right. it's a -- very cluttered community house where claude wilkerson lived in gateway colorado, just south of grand junction. it's the kind of place, a small town that investigators here say a person can disappear and get lost. the small rural western slope down of gateway has been home to aggie her whole life. and a few years ago, it became wilkerson. >> he came 5 ear 6 years ago. >> reporter: the man police say turned a homeless woman's life into a nightmare. >> she's been to hell and back.

house for several months. a house investigator said he used chemicals to keep her sedated. >> drugged, chained down and being assaulted. >> reporter: a young run away living at the house at the time got away and notified authorities. when a deputy went to the house to check on the victim, she wasn't tied up, but was able to give the deputy signs something was wrong. a man neighbors like aggie say seemed to want to be left alone. >> that was kind of my impression. >> reporter: accused of a crime she can't believe happened in her small home town. >> right. right. >> the victim is getting help here in mesa county. the suspect, mr. wilkerson, has been charged with false imprisonment, sexual assault and kidnapping. he is being held on a million

9 wants to know has been digging into claude wilkerson's criminal history dating back more than 40 years. his first run in came in 1974. it's nuclear whether he was convicted. in 1978, he was charged and convicted in connection with the deaths of three people in a jewelry heist. the victims were taken to a farm where they were shot. the mesa county sheriff's department confirmed wilkerson spent 4 years on death row. in 1983, he was freed from a texas state prison on a technicality. arrest and court records show he has had several arrests and arrests and convictions in colorado. in 1997, he was charged with

montana, convicted of intimidation. we confirmed he bought that property in 932007. the sheriff admits the timings of this look terrible. a park county deputy died. sheriff fred wegener told us the -- the sheriff says that monte gore was suspended with pay for putting out an inaccurate press release about the shooting. the colorado bureau of investigation is reviewing the shooting that killed a progressive political activist. the u.s. honor guard flag is on display to honor corporal nate carrigan. the honor flag has flown since

west, midwest and above the great lakes. and maybe a shift coming in for the second half of this month. temperatures are warm. the humidity levels are low and we have gusty winds. certainly heading into the weekend, concerns for high fire danger. the warm weather trend is something we'll be talking about coming up in our weather segment, but this evening, it looks like the worst of it is the high cloud cover out there. temperatures will continue very mild between now and 7:00. coming up, we're going to talk about a storm on the way and our next chance for rain and snow and we'll let you know how weekend plans. >> we need it. >> we do. the last republican presidential nominee mitt romney bashed trump today.

mental health or substance abuse order every year. a group of students was honored for its mental health work. the suicide prevention program is now being used by students in 50 schools across the state. one student leader says she lives with mental illness and that pushed her to get involved early. >> it's something that hits you hard and blind sides you and you don't understand what's happening until it's almost too late .f we can bring winner before it happens or in the beginning, we can hopefully eliminate suicide altogether. >> mental health colorado is working on building a network of advocates across the state to get help to those who need it before things hit the crisis stage. bringing classroom science out into the real world. maya rodriguez explores this plan to help teenagers become

>> reporter: sometimes, to understand the part, you have to dress the part. >> when i saw it, i thought i was going to pass out. >> reporter: caroline janney is a freshman at east high school, trying on some of the heavy duty gear researchers wear when they do field work at the south pole. >> it sounds interesting to learn to live in such a unique place. >> reporter: she's one of two dozen students from east high and john f kennedy high in denver who visited the national oceanic and atmospheric boulder. it's part of a program called my brother's keeper and the idea revolves around getting teens excited about science and its real-world applications. >> what we're trying to do is expose them to new careers that are related to some of the stuff they're doing in their high school. >> reporter: that included lessons on lightning safety and experiments with electricity.

young students, bright, that are interested in science and we like to spark their curiosity. >> reporter: and a hands on look at the air we breathe every day from collecting the air samples to testing them in a lab. >> the students that are participating in stem education, they're way more connected to school. they're more motivated to be there. they're pushed to critically think and come up with new things, new projects, new designs. >> reporter: new concepts that one day could come from one of these very students. denver public schools tells us they had more than 1200 students enrolled in that stem path way. they seem engaged. >> you can see looking at their faces. we could be headed for an
