fall and the summer with the republican nominee facing a fraud trial. >> oh, stop it. >> with hillary clinton saying why did you give my campaign and foundation $100,000. >> he's trying to con people into giving them their vote. >> the real con artist is senator marco rubio. who was elected in florida. >> reporter: with only john kasich sticking to an uplifting message. >> why don't we come together as a country, respect one another, love one another and lift this country. >> reporter: insieving he'll stay in the race through ohio. >> it's march madness and we're heading up north to the place -- to my turf, okay. >> reporter: hours earlier, the party's 2012 nominee unleashed an unprecedented attack on the 2016 favorite. >> he's a phony, a fraud. >> reporter: undercutting the

>> say wait, wait, wait, isn't he a huge business success? doesn't he no he what he's talking about? no, he isn't and no he doesn't. >> reporter: but the stop trump movement may have been stopped in its tracks with trump's three remaining rivals pledging to back him if he's the nominee. even as they continue to challenge trump. >> donald has a tenuous relationship with the truth. >> that is not what you said in the -- >> donald, please, i know it's hard not to interrupt. >> it's not what you said in the op-ed. >> breathe, breathe, breathe. >> lying ted. >> when they're done with the yoga, can i answer a question. >> you cannot. i really hope you don't see yoga on this stage. >> he's very flexible. you never know. >> it all comes down to the next 11 days leading up to the next super tuesday, march 15th when we'll likely learn whether donald trump will be able to secure the nomination or if the republican race is really headed toward a contested convention. that is a scenario that mitt

urging republicans to support rubio and kasich and cruz elsewhere. it's also a situation where nothing would stop party leaders from adding romney's name to the mix. >> peter, thank you so much. good place to start with. over to matt. >> thanks for the setup, peter. appreciate it. mitt romney is with us exclusively. thanks for joining us. >> good to be with you. >> depending who you listen to this morning, governor, you are a traitor who proves that the establishment of the republican party is so afraid that they can't control donald trump that they'll do anything to stop him or you're a hero who has finally put this race into perspective. for the people who think you're a hero, they're asking a question. why did you wait so long? tell me about the timing. >> well, i've wanted to be involved in the campaign, if you will, as a bit of a referee. when there were foul balls be aible to call them and see if i can't keep people, if you will, guided on the path to becoming our next president. the time came when donald trump's outrage had reached such
7:07 am
i mean, you get to the point where you say your grand kids will say to you, papa, what did you do to stop donald trump? i had to get out and speak. >> experts are calling this an unprecedented event in modern political history in this country, a former nominee of a party in a scathing takedown of the favorite to be become the next nominee. this isn't a typical front-runner. this is a guy who has survived moments in this campaign that would have derailed anybody else. matter? >> i don't know if it will or not. but i know i couldn't stand silent anymore. you can't have someone whose policies are so far from the views of my party become nominee. someone demonstrated that he doesn't have the temperament or personal equalities to become president. >> you said he's dangerous for the country, dangerous for working americans, you attacked him on economic policy, foreign policy, his personality which you call his third grade antics, his business acumen.
7:08 am
that knows what he's talking about? no, he isn't. no, he doesn't. his bankruptcies have crushed small businesses and the men and women who work for them. he inherited his business. he didn't create it. let me take you back four years. all right. and listen to this. >> donald trump has shown an extraordinary ability to understand how our economy works, to create jobs for the american people. i spent my life in the private sector, not quite as successful as this guy but successful nonetheless. >> that was four years ago, same two guys, donald trump and mitt romney. >> he's a successful guy. he's made a lot of money but he hasn't been uniformly successful and he's far from a business genius. trump university, trump steaks, trump mortgage, trump vitamin company, one after the other, failure after failure. just because he's made a lot of money, one you don't measure your life by how much money you make. because he's made a lot of money doesn't mean his economic
7:09 am
>> the people who are angry are saying he willingly welcomed the endorsement of donald trump four years ago, even though he was already knee deep in the birther movement and had made other incendiary comments. why go 180 degrees. >> i was seeking his endorsement. now he's seeking mine. a lot has happened in the last year. frankly, had i heard him say the things i've heard him say now i wouldn't have welcomed his endorsement. when i calls george w. bush a liar, when he says putin is a strong and poweller fell leader, popular with his people. when he mocks a reporter because of a disability, when he attacks women because of their looks or menstrual cycle. >> did you beg him for his endorsement? >> i was welcoming his endorsement, happy to have it. i was looking for as many endorsers as i could possibly have. when it comes to who i would
7:10 am
a lot of folks that endorsed me i would not want to see as president. >> you laid out a plan, saying that if the other candidates can find common ground i believe we can nominate a person who will represent the values and policies of conservatism. given the current delegate selection process, this means i would vote for marco rubio in florida, for john kasich in ohio and for ted cruz or whichever one of the other two contenders has the best chance of beating mr. trump in a given state. you are calling for nothing less than a suppress donald trump movement that will lead to cleveland and a contested convention. >> there's no question. i'm going to do everything within the normal political bounds to make sure we don't nominate donald trump. i think he would be terribly unfit for office. i don't think he has the temperament to become president. i want to see one of the other three become nominee. after march 15th i think you'll see it narrow down to one or two contenders.
7:11 am
leading up to march 15th, you want marco rubio and ted cruz to back off and let john kasich win ohio? do you want john kasich and ted cruz to back off and let marco rubio win florida? and if we get to cleveland and a contested convention, how are these millions of voters, some of whom have come to the process in the party for the first time because of donald trump, how are donald trump in the lead and watch the establishment wing of the party pull the rug out from under him? >> first of all, a lot of people, establishment or not, who agree that donald trump should not be president of the united states and don't want to see him become the republican nominee. right now it's about 65% of republicans who had like someone else. that's the way politics works. you get behind the people you support, fight for them and the person who wins in the process is the one who becomes your nominee. >> you didn't endorse anybody yesterday. that's also angered a lot of people. it can't be about anybody but trump. why didn't you endorse? >> there are three people on the
7:12 am
including donald trump. i want to see how they -- >> is he a friend of yours. >> we get along. i doubt we're going to spend a lot of time together now. we'll see on march 15th, i think a narrowing of the field and at that point, i wouldn't be srped if i endorse one of those guys. >> not endorsing someone now, governor, have you left the door open just wide enough for you to ride through it on a white horse? do you want to be considered as an alternative to save this party if it gets down to a contested convention in july? >> no, no. the people who can save this or john kasich. we're going to get a sense within a few days of who that person might be. i'll be supporting that person and doing everything i can to make sure they become the nominee of the party. >> i'll be stubborn on this. under any circumstances, governor, if large numbers of people in the establishment wing of the republican party come to you and say, mitt, you're the guy who can save the day.
7:13 am
you be a part of this presidential race as a candidate? >> there are no circumstances i can foresee that would possibly happen. >> i can foresee. >> no reasonable scenario i would imagine. >> close the door, slam the door on it. you will not run for president. >> i am not running for president and i won't run for president. the term establishment is a real mistake. mainstream republicans believe in conservative values, people whether established or not vb , have watched going on. what's happening with donald trump, is recognizing people are angry as they should be. he's channelled that anger in a way that will not help working families. there are other republicans who will lift people out of poverty and create good jobs for the american people. >> last question, these candidates have called each other losers, liars, sweaters, chokers, they've made fun of each other's appearance, the size of their ears, the size of their hands.
7:14 am
is there one person running on the republican side in your opinion who has been the biggest adult and the most presidential? >> well, it's very clear to point to person who's been the smallest adult. and that's donald trump. he has taken personal, physical attributes and made fun of people on the basis throughout the campaign. some of the candidates are saying i have to return fire. last night, he kept pointing at marco rubio and saying little marco, little marco. this is a new low in presidential politics and simply wrong. i think john kasich is saying, i'm not going to do that. but recognize that if you want to become the nominee, you've got to prosecute the opposition as well as lift yourself. >> would you vote for hillary clinton or sit out voting as opposed to voting for donald trump? >> i wouldn't vote for donald trump. and i wouldn't vote for hillary clinton. i intend to vote for our nominee. i expect that nominee to be a
7:15 am
>> governor mitt romney. i appreciate you coming in this morning. >> thank you, matt. nicolle wallace here. she was a communications director for president george w. bush. if you don't like donald trump, i imagine was cathartic to hear that. do you think it was persuasive to somebody who does support donald trump. >> peggy noonan writes in a beautiful piece in the "wall street journal" who this has happened. the republican party is broken, establishment has split with the base of our party. she makes the brilliant point you can get a new establishment. you cannot get a new base of the party. we're at a moment where i think it's perilous to indict the wishes and now the choice of hundreds of thousands of republican primarigoers. it was a brave speech to go out and make a speech like that after people have started to
7:16 am
romney is respected and reveered by many republicans. i think he was maybe in this instance speaking to the decided, the people who have decided they could never support trump will be cheered by his words. i don't think he got through to the people who are inspired and animated by trump. >> on the other hand, there's still a lot of voting left. we'll see how republican primary voters ultimately come down, although there's no question donald trump is the front-runner right now. >> right. >> let's talk about the debate for a moment. what do you think? does it move the needle? does it even matter anymore? >> i do think we need a new rule whenever anyone makes a reference to the size of any of their body parts, they have to give a delegate to john kasich. the "r" rated nature of this makes it hard to watch with your kids. i talked to someone who was watching with their 12-year-old daughter, cringing through the whole thing. the party has to look as a party how we restore the elegance to the office. >> it's a swear jar, is that what you're saying? drop a delegate in every time.
7:17 am
and the democratic side, new developments on hillary clinton's e-mail controversy. the federal employee who helped set up and manage the private server is cooperating with the fbi now that he has immunity. "the new york times" reports that he has turned over security logs from clinton's logs. clinton's use of a private e-mail server while serving as secretary of state has prompted an investigation into whether she or others in her administration mishandled classified information. all right. i was looking out a second ago, snowing here in new york, just a little. passing through? >> that's right. it will be a quick hitter. as we take a look, lewis, delaware. there's quite a bit of snow but it is melting for the most part. slushy surfaces with be school delays from the washington, d.c. area up into the new york area. this will be a quick hitter for the most part. rain right along the coast,

mitt romney's speech labeling trump as unfit for offer and a danger to the gop and the nation. mitt romney was with us in our last half hour and asked him why he waited so long to get involved in the race. >> i wanted to be involved in the campaign, if you will, as a bit of a referee. when there were foul balls, be able to call them and see if i can keep people guided on the path to becoming our next president. the time came when donald trump's outrage had reached such a level that i simply had to speech out. >> romney said he'll do everything in normal political nominated. we have a lot to talk about with our next guest, senator marco rubio. good to see you, sir. >> good morning. >> you really let donald trump have it, calling him a con artist, calling him a fraud, saying he doesn't really know much about foreign policy and seems uncurious to learn.
7:33 am
you rose your hand and said, yes, if he's the nominee, you will support him. how do you square those things? >> i get that. it's the quandary we're in. we as republicans feel that hillary clinton would be a disaster to the country. that's how bad she is. i would look at that as a reflection of how bad she is, not as good trump is. that's what i want to avoid. i don't want us to nominee someone that people have to be asked this question about all the time. if this was anyone else, any other candidate that ran for president this year was in the position that trump is today, the question would not be coming up. there's a reason the question is asked. there is a significant percentage of people in our him. policy ideas. the ones he has outlined are either dangerous or un-serious. we're in a bad spot. >> when push came to shove, you said you'd go to the ballot box and vote for donald trump.
7:34 am
look, i'm not voting for hillary clinton. i get it. look, i understand your question. it's not -- this is the tough spot i want us to avoid. i don't want us to have a nominee that people have to settle for or make excuses for why they voted. the only way to avoid that is unify around a campaign like mine, because i can bring the party together and grow it. we're not going to be able to do that under donald trump. october. if this is the mood in october, we'll lose to hillary clinton. that's why he does poorly against her in the polling. >> mitt romney endorsed a strategy, not a candidate yesterday. he said, do anything to stop trump. rubio in florida. kasich in ohio. cruz anywhere you think he'll be the winner. is that your strategy too right now? are you saying, the best i'll be able to do at this point is get it to a contested convention, where we can settle it there? >> no. look, my strategy is vote for me
7:35 am
everywhere else, too. i want people to vote for me everywhere else. this is not about a contested election, per se. no one is aiming toward that. the reality of it if you look at the delegate masses, if things continue the way they are now, and they may not, but if they continue the way they are, it'll be hard for anyone on the ballot to get to 1,237 delegates. that doesn't mean a brokered convention. you could have someone that really gains steam down the stretch here and has a large number of delegates and brings everyone together who agrees. this is an unusual race. there's anxiety in the country. donald trump has taken advantage of that to try to pull off the scam job, where he's portraying himself as something he's not. he's injected a level of vulgar vulgarness into the campaign that we've never seen before. >> in the debate last night, there was a lot of talk about the size of hands and what that correlates to. i know donald trump is no stranger to an insult, but after
7:36 am
you are the one who introduced this particular insult into our political discourse. are you sorry you went there? >> oh, please, donald trump has spent a year doing this on a regular basis. in fact, there is not a speech or debate that donald trump does that he doesn't personally somebody. i said something one time to a guy who needs to be stood up to. by the way, in response to an attack against me. i didn't do it last night. i didn't do it repeatedly. it happened one time because the guy is a rhetorical bully. he mocks the disabled, makes fun of minorities and women, makes fun of journalists, his other candidates. even last night, he was asked about foreign policy. his response was a personal attack against me. this is going to be the nominee of the republican party and the president of the united states? i mean, what we has done, he's turned the most important election in a generation into a circus and a freak show. i want that to end, and i'll

i'm already seeing that for our friends up on i-76, we have a wind shift that's going on, gusty winds out of the north and as those interact with the terrain here on the front range, we will get very light showers late this afternoon, little more than sprinkles, but it will turn around and the skies can have a much different look. 7:00 p.m. and then clear out after that so it's not the beginning of anything big. it will just be a little bit of cool, slightly damp weather late in the day today. ahead of the showers we are in the 60s, about 10 degrees warmer down south, a mild day in the west and generally dries in mountain areas. might get light snow on the divide as we get a few sprinkles around here late in the day. those are out and gone by early this evening and it will be a warm weekend with mid-60s for saturday, low 70s for sunday, monday we have a much better chance for rain in the area, it will mix with some wet snow at times, especially in the afternoon and evening, even if

debate? >> we get jaded in the press. you never get surprised but i went, oh. the republican debate descended into childish moments. trump said despite what rubio suggested earlier this week, when talking about the size of trump's hands -- an old thing people said, if you have small hands -- trump said, i have great hands. rubio said, you know what they say about guys can small hands. here's what trump said last night. >> he hit my hands. nobody has ever hit my hands. look at those hands, are they small hands? and he referred to my hands, if they're small, something else must be small. i guarantee you, there's no problem. i guarantee you. >> it's not even high school level here. >> if it weren't so serious, you

but, i mean, these are the people, the last men standing, since carly is out, no women on the gop side, running for president. mitt romney has been, you know, the former nominee, and spoke this morning. >> i feel like we're one debate away from whoopee cushions being put on seats. >> that might happen next. >> oh, my gosh. >> i don't understand how the country can allow this to continue. you let your kids watch the debates, you know, you want them to understand the -- what goes into the process of electing a president. they can't watch this debate because it ends up in a round of bullying, child-like behavior with name calling and everything you teach your kids not to do. >> it also resulted in thousands more people going to vote. i mean, listen, the republican
9:05 am
we've been out on the campaign trail. people have been, you know, leaving work, suspending errands to go vote. you look at the debate, but a record number of people are turning out to caucus and to vote in primaries because of this. >> you know what's interesting, we had a graphic up a couple days ago, where in 2008, for the huge turnout obama brought on the democratic side, the flip has happened this year. untold story. tons and tons of people are coming out, partly because of donald trump, or largely, i'd argue. trump and cruz were having a heated diskigs cussion about the supreme court nominating process when senator cruz interrupted him. >> let me point out -- >> that is not what you said in the op-ed. >> donald, i know it's hard not to interrupt but try. >> it's not what you said. >> breathe, breathe. >> you can breathe. i know it's hard. >> when they're done with yoga,

9:10 am
a ajoourks endorsement. >> i mean, this is, again, why people don't like politics. feels cynical, to flip that way. the only thing in governor romney's defense i'll say, you can accept an endorsement, but it's something else to endorse somebody to be president of the united states. trump was a businessman at this point. now he wants to lead the country. romney thinks it's his obligation to prevent it. >> legit point. but the thing that matt brought up, at that time, donald trump was full birther. and had claimed that he sent people off to hawaii. they found all this incredible stuff he's never revealed publicly. we'll see. i mean, voters are speaking out. ultimately, that's democracy. >> it's true. >> can we talk about something happy? >> yes! >> not that politics isn't happy but -- >> well, something our viewers have contributed to. >> right. people have spoken. >> yeah.
