ch around this evening, just like these clouds hanging over downtown denver,. there's good news for the weekend warriors out there hoping to get outside in the sun perhaps tomorrow. we want to bring in meteorologist danielle grant. i see some sunshine on your face. it's so bright and beautiful for a change of pace out here. we were stuck with cloudy conditions for the past couple days. still had cool temps on tap this afternoon in the 70s. soak it in while you can. we'll be watching those numbers

outside now, a mix of sun and clouds. some areas to the south through castle rock, a few showers, but over all, it's been a spectacular afternoon. to the western slope, we're watching heavier pockets of rain pushing through with the monsoon winds carrying that sub tropical moisture and whipping it back into our state where the flash flood watch will continue for most of the western site until midnight tonight. scattered showers pushing in across the far eastern plains gaining intensity out there. not only are they dealing with lightning but also some and very heavy rains. so far i haven't seen any severe cells out of those. you can see around the i-25 corridor, bone dry, a little sunshine here and there. but those showers are once again starting to reform in the mountains and in the foothills, we could see a couple pushback into the city. for now it's going on the southeastern colorado that we're keeping a close eye on as far as severe thunderstorms. 70s in fort collins, greeley, and we have 81 at dia. we will monitor a few showers here and there.

i have good news, it'll be looking a little dryer. we'll be talking about sizzling temperatures soon. the numbers will feel a little bit more like summertime. >> like some sweat coming down my forehead, thank you danielle. most people step away quickly from bad smells but that's not the case at the denver botanic gardens where a smelly bloom is attracting the hours ago. it caught staff by surprise. they talked to 9news reporter jessica about why this was extremely rare. >> reporter: there was lines wrapped around the denver botanic garden. hundreds of people hoping to soak in the sights and smells of the infamous corpse flower the corpse flower is in bloom again and this time people don't want to miss out. if you'd like to see a rare

you have to do is follow your nose. >> it smells like an old sponge. >> kind of like garbage. >> did you smell anything? >> a corpse flower has once again bloomed in denver. >> we weren't sure when it would happen. but it happened today. >> reporter: this was a total surprise to horticulturalists like nick, he didn't think the bloom would survive. >> it's basically like a child, you don't know when 's to be delivered. >> reporter: it only took a couple hours before news got out and people packed the pavilion. >> i said hurry and eat we need to rush and beat the crowds. >> we missed it last year. we got to see it now. >> reporter: the corpse flower can be easy to miss. it only blooms every eight to ten years and lasts for two days. >> my child has grown up to be a flower, that's incredible. >> reporter: an incredible sight that as rare as it is

>> seeing the public being enthusiastic over a single plant is amazing. >> reporter: in denver, jessica, 9news. >> the bloom will be cross pollinated with the corpse flower in new york. there's still a chance for you to see this little stinker at denver botanic gardens tonight and tomorrow. >> how wonderful it happened on a weekend. those don't last very long. last year's big corpse flower bloom was pretty rk it. but here's what it looked like last year. people from all around the world watched a live stream for days as it slowly bloomed. we were waiting for this to happen forever it seems like. tens of thousands of people lined for for hours to get a whiff of that stench. a mosquito born virus is spreading in north colorado. this time it's west nile. the first human case of west nile was confirmed in will

recovering at home -- greeley is recovering at home. a second case is under investigation nearby in the johns town area. colorado state university found a west nile case in a horse in well county. west nile can spread in birds and other animals. mosquitoes then bite those animals and can in turn infect humans. because of these cases, larimer county plans to start spraying for mosquitoes on monday. the health department will be spraying around fort collins, we're told that's going to happen next week. mosquitoes at home is to use insect repellent. get rid of standing water and cover exposed skin. a married couple is facing charges after trying to hit and bite security guards at a campground. it happened north of fort collins. larimer county deputies say bruce attacked the guards with a bat. when the guards tried to restrain him, his wife hit a deputy with a flashlight. deputies say he then tried to bite them, even tried to kick out windows of a patrol car.

but everyone is expected to be okay. a man was shot several times while driving on i-70 and investigators don't know who did it or why. the man is from kansas. he was driving in elbert county yesterday. when he says a blue honda pulled up next to him. his car was riddled with gunshots and he was injured. emergency crews flew to the hospital for treatment and now investigators are looking at surveillance videos from nearby businesses to try to track down the shr. king mine spill, the environmental protection agency is ready to pay a million dollars to those effected. the epa announced the payment yesterday one year to the day after the spill. a crew accidentally caused the spill dumping millions of gallons of toxins into the river. it turns the river a sickly yellow color. the contaminated water spread to water sources in colorado, utah, and three indian

durango's mud covered roads are back open today. several closed yesterday after heavy rain pushed mud, water, and rocks into the street. the durango harald is reporting that one mud slide temporarily stranded folks on a county road. they're doing fine today. parts of colorado could see more mud slides this weekend as the chances for rain continue. a colorado man died after getting caught in a flood in new mexico. the man was driving a ford f

sank friday afternoon. investigators say he tried to cross a washed out area and the truck rolled several times. winds ushering in all that tropical storm can be dangerous. you can see the thunderstorms that still exist across the southwestern side of the state. this is our camera in ridge way. we're looking at the san juans. you can see those dark daunting clouds in the far off distance. these thunderstorms are packed with water. so we've been watching some of them cruise by any where between 2 to potentially an hour in some spots. rock slides, landslides, not out of the question. this flash flood watch will be in police through midnight tonight. we've been watching the potential from the san juans to the central mountains and teller and el paso county. you can see the monsoon wind flow dragging the tropical storm and pushing it throughout parts of the four corners and letting it sit across the state. high pressure, sitting out toward parts of texas, this
