while you watched the event outside the olympic park in rio today, strong winds send fences flying and damaged part of the building including the swimming venue. our team is there with that story and the rest of the big news from the olympics. beyond anybody's control. and we have some real reminders of that here in the parking rio today. spot you bet. events canceled, postponed, anything outside was impacted. >> the wind that caused problems caused damage to one of the most beautiful venues here in the park, the swimming venue. there's an entire panel missing off the side.

everything was blown away. >> my god. >> it's been written that wind does not discriminate and boy, is that apparent in orland park. >> when you walk that way, you go flying. >> it touches everything and everyone it passes. and it passed with a fury. >> umbrellas were flying around. the fencing areas were being blown away. people being blown away. >> reporter: pe of the walls of the swimming venue, the original art on the side ripped and unraveled. >> oh, yeah. it's being torn up. >> reporter: in the time it took to order a meal, there was not a single umbrella left standing. broken glass, buildings left to be repaired, even as olympic competition was going on inside. nothing left untouched. >> tomorrow we'll see what kind of repairs they start doing on this building. it will be a challenge either way you look at it. a lot of fabric up there.

meter freestyle relay powering the u.s. to a win. it is his 23rd overall middle in the olympic games. katie ledecky showed her dominance in the 400-meter freestyle, breaking the world record and winning the race by a full five seconds over her nearest competitor. >> one of the biggest races of the year in boulder has been marred by the death of a sign just north of the incident is a tribute to the women killed this morning. 34-year-old michelle walters from mccook, nebraska was hit and killed by a driver during her cycling portion of the race. she was hit at u.s. 36, just north of broadway. that area had a shoulder blocked off for cyclists. details in the driver have not been released. colorado state patrol says speed and alcohol are not believed to be factors. this is the second death in two years during the boulder iron man. also the fourth cycling death

three months. a child died after an accident at a waterpark in kansas city. the 12-year-old boy's name is caleb schwab, a son of a kansas state representative. he was on the verruckt, the world's tallest water slide. how he died is in question. the entire park will stay closed until further notice. a 12-year-old child is being treated at a hospital in denver after falling 75 feet near colorado springs this afternoon. the child was hurt near helen hunt falls and flown to denver's children hospital. few other detas child's injuries or what led up to the fall have been released. adams county investigators have a lot of questions for these men, brandon car and rachel you already a. they were arrested after a shooting just east of arvada. it happened when deputies arrived, they found four people shot. two men died, two others went to the hospital with minor injuries.

neighbors say it started with an argument. investigators have not released the names of the men killed in the shooting. storms led to a river of mud flowing across a highway in southwest colorado today. the san miguel sheriff's office sent out photos showing the roads near pleasantville and sawpit just west of telluride. one to two feet of mud covered the area in some spots. crews did manage to get traffic moving around 7:00 although they did warn drivers to avoid the area unless necessary. it was two weeks ago that similar mudslides we have seen a lot of storms in different parts of the state and others today. daniel joining us now with what our forecast looks like. daniel? >> these thunderstorms are pushing across parts of colorado. in for -- we saw just a couple earlier this evening. and some storms now turning severe just to the south of us toward colorado springs. for everyone around here, things are starting to die down

quarter sized hail, a lot of lightning and heavy downpours too. mostly cloudy conditions across the state for now as well but temperatures holding tight, low 70s. feels good out there. 68 in sterling, 71 in lamar, mid-60s across the high country area and 59 in gunnison. so far for the month, four days of average, three have been below and look at this, more heat is on the way as we still are in the summer season. tomorrow i will be looking at a couple of isolated storms in the late afternoon early evening and then vicente, we will have another cool off ngsimilar to last week, might feel more like fall. >> some kids going back to school. maybe they should have an umbrella with them? but maybe for the afternoon. but to the bus stop, definitely some shorts. >> put it in the backpack. thank you, danielle. nine months since a drunk driver killed jaimie jursevics. many people remembered the woman who lost her life in the

found out how something as small as a thank you is making it's medicine back. >> reporter: on the last day of the douglas county fair, families tried to get in as much fun as they could. and hundreds of people also took a moment to reflect and think fallen state trooper jaimie jursevics. >> thank you for protecting me. thank you for your service. >> reporter: 8-year-old mac marion and tyler tiefenbacher's simple notes were among 400 handwritten messages attached badge number in honor of the trooper killed on duty last november. >> when you see that, it makes you tear up a little bit. the thought of somebody losing their life and their little children growing up without a mom. and what they sacrificed is pretty amazing. >> reporter: jursevics' daughter was just eight months old when her mother died.

took the time to stop and shake her hand. >> reporter: jeff goodwin said he and the rest of the csp will always look after her child. >> so i love to work with her. we just became friends several years ago. so this was especially tough for a guy like me that was also a friend not just a colleague. >> reporter: as people in the community said goodbye, they also thanked the troopers constantly working to keep them safe. >> my spelling. >> i know they are actually doing a lot of dangerous and hard work for us. >> reporter: the 400 roses will soon line the castle rock. as for the special patrol car with the thin blue line, it will be back on the role -- back on the road patrolling the same roads jursevics did. >> all of the handwritten notes will be given to jursevics' daughter so when she is old enough she can read the kind words people said about her mother. >> hard to believe it's been nine months. wonderful city -- to see young kids that are going to be touching the life -- she is a year and a half old at this point.

the pilot fire in san bernardino county bm this afternoon. since then it has burned 1000 acres. gusty winds have a lot to do with that. some people are saying that there is ash that's raining down on their homes. evacuations were ordered a few hours ago. as the team of 400 fighter fires are still trying to --

control. some big gains on the largest wildfire burning in the state. the beaver creek fire by the wyoming border is 28% contained. that fire started back in june. get this, it has burned more than 35,000 acres. investigators still don't know what caused it. full containment isn't expected until late october. switching gears, we want to check in with danielle grant. did you see the fog this morning? glad to see it burned off and the sun came out. >> i know. pushed in later this evening. a couple thunderstorms out there as well. actually first originated out at dia and then started pushing up to the north, and to the west. our friends in porton saw a little bit of this, kathy posted this on our facebook wall. not only heavy rainfall but small hail too, kathy, get the car in the garage. a little bit of floating out on the street in her neighborhood too. once the storms moved out, man, made for a killer sunset. a little bit of light in between

it was believe it or not, a 90- degree day here, making it 38 92 -- 90-degree days for the month of august -- there you go, 90s in greeley, a little cooler obviously in the mountains and we had some 90s out there to the west in rifle and grand junction. right now at the airport, 72. mostly cl time, a bit of a breeze out of the south at about 11 miles per hour. here, feels pretty couple, temperatures at about 74. storms have been pushing in from the southwest once again, tapping into the monsoonal moisture. we will be doing just the same tomorrow too. you can see the thunderstorm activity quieting down a bit towards the same ones, but across the central mountains, couple spots picking up on light rain as well as lightning, and we do have the thunderstorm warning and still 11:45.

black forest area, 70-mile-per- hour metro wide, looking pretty good the rest of tonight. as far as the wet weather goes, in denver, out at dia, only a trace, we haven't seen much. for this time, we should really be looking more at a half-inch or so. 61 tonight, watching showers fizzling out and then a bit of patchy morning fog across the far eastern plains, we'll see how further east or west you'll get potentiallto morning. we'll keep it mild in the 60s for most of eastern colorado. 40s and 50s in the mountains. these showers should be winding down overnight and by 8:00 a.m., another batch of showers starts pushing in from the west, sunshine for us early on, by four or 5:00, showers will start to make their way into the metro area again. pretty sparse, similar to this afternoon, some folks saw them, some didn't. by 10:00, we will start to see

storms turned severe in northern colorado and watching a close eye up there tomorrow -- as far as the rain goes through tomorrow evening, look at that, bull's-eye down towards castle rock, douglas, elbert county up to the mountains as well, from denver up to the north, i don't think we'll see a ton. tomorrow back to school, how can that be, right? still early august. watching the temperatures in the lower 90s, should be mild for the bus stop and then possibly a couple light rain showers pushing in for the late afternoon. low 90s around the metro area, up to e we'll hit 86 in cortez with upper 70s in ouray as well as pagosa springs. 72 in nederland, upper 80s in arvada and lakewood. 90s in denver. another day, the summer heat is going to be with us for the first half of the week. in fact we're going to be cut off from the monsoon on tuesday and wednesday. a little bit of drier air pushing and that allows the temperatures to move. back to the mid-90s, watching for a few thunderstorms rolling through on thursday and friday

the olympic road race, she broke away from the pack, looked golden but with the finish line in sight, she was passed by three cyclists working together as she finished fourth. by four seconds. said abbott afterwards quote, i rode it to the max. i got to 200 meters and thought, oh, my god, this is going to happen. then they passed me. unquote. rough finish for martin truex, jr. as well, the local nascar racer he made a move to win it at the end. instead, he got hit on his end. brad keselowski spun him out right before the line. he ended up finishing eighth, denny hamlin won the race and then after the race tracks did you had some choice words for keselowski. >> i said it was his fault. simple as that. it's all good. just hard racing. i just wanted him to know that i wasn't happy after the race. as far as the rest of it, it's not a big deal. hard racing, road course.

a group barely old enough to drive. students in oregon this weekend delivered a tiny house to a man without a home. they built it as part of a school volunteer project. the idea came from a 17-year- old. he says when faced with coming up with a project his thought immediately was at helping the homeless. >> seems not right that we walk down the street and see all the people who don't have a house. and really just like, really something i'm glad. i never thought i could help as
