action in rio. first let's get you set for the day with a look at the week ahead. marty coniglio is in the 9 news backyard. a hot start to the workweek. it is going to be, much warmer today, temperatures in the low 90s. storm chances are small here. though it is very stormy on the western slope. it does turn cooler later this week. it is fairly quiet around here now, a couple of wannabe showers to the east and it has been extremely active however from the san juans through the elk mountains and the aspen area and now especi colorado river, and back to glenwood canyon, and in northwestern colorado. these are not huge storms. they are not covering gigantic areas but just a tremendous amount of lightning in these storms. and in the last 30 minutes, almost 700 whitening strikes in these storms -- lightning strikes in these storms. and these will begin to die down between now and 9:00 a.m. a quiet morning. mid-60s now. and upper 70s, by 10:00 this morning. and on our way, to highs in the upper 80s.

89. and i think we will hit 90 to 92 and the storm chances are very small today. so do not be counting on any rain later in the day today. and you know, we will see a lot of folks who get shut out in these kind of situations, amelia. >> and rain in the afternoon. >> yes. and sky 9 is up and about. the morning drive. they are looking at 270 and york. and southbound and eastbound, a stall blocking the far right shoulder and the delays go back to i-25. so this might days where you opt for southbound 25 to eastbound i-70 because it could be a great way to maybe tack on a little distance and save yourself a few minutes from the stop and go backups. the central corridor of i-95 looking nice from 25 to university. easy speeds and great conditions out of the denver tech center. and up to the north, highway 7 is also looking good. along hi 25. the e-470 corridor, wide open to the east side. however, we've got two problems, one out to the far

club road and state highway 30. and very close to all of the neighborhoods to the east of hesmed-470 and out west, we still have a left lane blocked, near georgetown, and light backups, less than five minutes, eastbound and westbound this morning, corey? >> amelia, thank you. delta flights worldwide are grounded this morning. after the airline suffered a systemwide computer failure. >> the outage is affecting flights from denver to london and everywhere in between. >> 9 news reporter colleen ferreira is this morning and it looks like the lines are pretty long out there. >> reporter: for sure, guys, the line keeps growing at d.i.a. delta says there is a power outage in atlantaa which caused the system-wide outage, that's why all flights around the world are grounded right now and that's why you see the lines behind me at the delta counter, they get longer and longer and it seems most people will be here for a while and delta is saying there could be wide scale cancellations throughout the day, because of this. and now, if you come here to

boards, guys, those are confusing, those do not reflect what the real status of your flight is. a lot of people come in here and they see the flights are technically still on time but they're not. the flight boards also impacted by this outage. also delta's web site impacted. so a lot of people right now can't even check their flight status. very confusing time right now. i would suggest tweeting delta, at delta, really on twitter because i have seen them answering people's questions on twitter and that em sos to be the only way to get a hold of delta this morning. i want to here, chatting with patrick, a passenger of delta and where are you headed today? >> minneapolis. >> there are some people here from delta and what are they telling you? >> they are saying it is a power outage. and they are not sure when they will get the system back up. if you wanted to book a flight on another carrier, they would give you a refund. so that was nice, they're very accommodating from that standpoint and trying to figure out if i can get on another flight or wait until this flight gets up. all flights have been canceled. and we should know hopefully sometime soon. >> hopefully sometime soon.

style. she is a veteran at 1 years old at the olympics. -- 21 years old at the lrnlings. four gold medals and a bronze on her resume. this year is different. she is coming back from injury and that is a challenge. and one of the things she is doing to regain some strength and flexibility is pilates and when we saw her do that, i asked, maybe she should have been a two sport athlete. >> i did not know you were so >> future talent. >> future talent. >> you could double on the gymnastics team. >> i think i would like touch the high bars, if i did gymnastics. maybe not. thanks to the gymnasts, 2016, watch out. >> did you know were you that flexible? >> i have loved to dance and kind of known i was flexible based on that. but yes, it is kind of like a

rio. this is the web cam on copacabana reach. and it is not a great beach day but the anticipation is for the skies to clear a bit today. only in the mid-70s. showers moving back in midweek. especially tomorrow night into wednesday morning. and a fairly cool week. remember, it is winter in rio this time of the year. and we have thunderstorms going in western colorado. and that is a tremendous amount of lightning that is happening. and th javier and heavy rain toward ka cab go in the next 24 hours. the storms look huge because of the lightning strikes. a phenomenal amount of lightning. and 5,000 strikes per hour with the storms. and for this afternoon, a couple of storms. i would refer to it as a handsful at most, and most places not much rain and a few areas with a couple of rain showers late this afternoon.

the daytime highs and we will hit those by 3:00, and 70s and 80s in the foothills. it is very humid over eastern colorado. and humidity, equals energy. and that is where we could see some strong storms, especially over the northeast corner of the state, with the best opportunity for some strong storms and decent rain in the eastern san juans today. and 80s and 90s east and west. and 70s, in the mountains. today, 92, and partly cloudy and just a brief isolated afternoon storm tonight. and we go with ve of lightning, early, early in the evening and then clear out, and hit the 60s, and tomorrow is warm, with a small chance for a storm, and in fact the storm chances are really tiny this week. with javier pulling in a lot of the monsoon moisture. it is actually going to dry us out quite a bit as we cool down headed into this weekend. >> thanks, marty. sky 9 is now over gun club road and highway 30 out to the east of e-470 where a crash involving a car and motorcycle is is now blocking part of the intersection. the motorcycle is down on its

there. police are on the scene. traffic is still getting by. but going to add a couple extra minutes for commuters in the area. it looks like a pretty bad crash here. the next 15 or 20. a look at the rest of the commute across the c-dot cameras with plenty of volume southbound cracking along i-25 coming from 58th avenue. really toward i-70 at the mouse strap. stop and go. this is an unusually heavy delay. once you get into downtown, you will tack on another couple minutes as you push into the city, drive out of there dtc. about 14 minutes. average speed about 66. but those drop down into the 30s before we know. it there is the gun club road crash and state highway 30 across the east side. good news at georgetown, after an earlier wreck involving a couple of cars westbound at georgetown, with pretty big delays. all lanes are now clear and back to normal. the views 0 ut to the boulder drive. looking nice. gorgeous colors in the distance. pretty pinks and light blues as we peek out toward the flat irons. >> that is beautiful, amelia,

a small memorial marks the spot where a try athlete was hit and killed taking part in the boulder ironman. a driver hit and killed the 34- year-old nebraska native michelle walters during the cycling near u.s. 66 north of broadway, an area blocked off for cyclists. police don't think drugs or alcohol caused the crash. the second death in two years in the boulder iron man and the fourth cycling death b months. sunday marked nine months since a drunk driver killed the state trooper jamie jursevics and on the last day of the county fair, she was remembered. hundreds of people took a moment to reflect and remember the fallen state trooper. 400 handwritten messages attached to roses, covered a special patrol car with the badge number on it and initials. >> the thought of somebody losing their life.

as people in mexico are getting ready for newly formed tropical storm javier, several mountain communities ar slides. 39 people died, and the mud slides were caused by heavy rain from the remnants of hurricane earl. and right now, tropical storm javier is moving over the pacific, toward the southern end of baja, california. water park in kansas city, is closed this morning, after the death of a young boy. 10-year-old caleb thomas schwab died sunday at the schlitterbahn water park, and

passengers right now? >> reporter: so right now, tarhonda, they are getting everyone organized and several different lines out here at d.i.a. and from there, they will start to check people in, as best as they can. with the outage that they have in place right now. and very confusing for a lot of passengers. a lot of people really don't know what is happening and where they're going and what time they're leaving and that's the thing, we really don't know when this outage will be fixed. so a lot of people should plan to be here, for a while, and especially heading out to d.i.a. this morning, and delta is saying that there will be definitely expect those, and this is a power outage in atlanta and that began about 12:30 in the morning our time and impacted the power outage and caused the problems that we're having right now. if the flight took off before the outage happened, that international flight, heading into denver, that could be still on the way here. so if you're picking someone up this morning and they took off before the outage happened,

denver. but nothing since this outage has taken off around the world. a lot of people here are frustrated but really at this point, they are saying we don't know what we will do, and here is what you can do though. you cannot go to the web site to check the flight status because that is not going to reflect the time properly. if you come here to d.i.a., the flight board, it will tell you about the flight status, that is not reflecting the proper status of your flight right now. since nothing is taken off here at d.i.a. and delta is sa offering travel waivers for customers traveling today, through august 12. and i just tweeted out the link where you can go. under some circumstances, you can change your flight or get a full refund for your flight. and that may be the option you want to take. and if you don't want to deal with everything that is happening out here today. and so, guys, i mean it is a very confusing night for a lot of people and we don't know a lot of about what is happening here. i have been reading tweets from across the country and some say the outages are affecting more

get you around a pretty solid backup here. south and eastbound. a 14 minute ride coming up to york street. a crash and a stall on the far right shoulder. two lanes of traffic getting by. if you stick it up along i-25 southbound and connect with eastbound i-70, a pretty good option. and then great news to the east. across an earlier crash of south gun club at highway 30. everything is reopened. that motorcycle accident has been cleared from the road. but it does sound like the motorcyclist injuries. >> don't like to hear that. amelia, thank you. investigators want to know what led up to a deadly shooting in adams county over the weekend. it happened early sunday morning east of arvada, when deputies arrived two men were shot and two others went to the hospital with minor injuries. and deputies arrested brandon carr and another man, and they face charges of first-degree murder. a man accused in the car theft

earlier today. ignatio dagele police say caused a crash that killed a person in march. the man was found several days later at his grandmother's house. he is charged with vehicular homicide. it is 6:36 right now. a 12-year-old being treated at a hospital in denver this morning, after falling 75 feet, from colorado springs on sunday. the child was hurt near hetten hunt falls. and then flown to children's hospital. few details about the child's ri have been released. a terrifying moment in the skies above colorado springs. a sky diving plane caught fire with 13 passengers on board. all of them were able to parachute to safety. and the pilot was eventually able to land safely at the colorado springs east airport. and investigators believe the fire may have started after a bird got caught in the engine. it is 6:36 right now. a suicide bomber killed at least 53 people at a hospital in pakistan this morning. dozens more were hurt.

pakistani lawyers at the government-run hospital at the time. and police believe that had some connection to the attack. and no one has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. gunmen in afghanistan have abducted an american and an australian citizen. the five gunmen were wearing military uniforms, when they abducted the pair from their vehicle in kabul. the victims are believed to be employees of the nearby american university of afghanistan. 6:37 right now. they are different campaigns as you know but donald trump and hillary clinton are expected to focus on the same thing when they give speeches this week. trump is set to unveil his economic plan today, in detroit. and he has promised to double the economic growth of the country and expected to explain how that would happen. and he is going to outline his proposed tax cuts. hillary clinton meanwhile will deliver more about her economic plan on thursday in detroit. and capping off two weeks of

focusing on jobs and the economy. she has been talking about a massive infrastructure project to put people back to work. meanwhile, a giant ode to donald trump was set on fire in new york city. the owner had a 12-foot tall " t," a red, white and blue one in his yard and caught fire early sunday morning. fire marshals investigating it as a possible arson. the homeowner says his support for donald trump, like the sign will only grow. changes to the e-cigarette industry have been a long time coming and starting today the fda will bring the entire industry over federal oversight. jessica joins us now to talk about the tougher restrictions and people want to know how this will impact consumers. >> reporter: the big question, corey. in colorado, we don't flow if it will have a big impact on consumers because part of the fda's new regulation is already in place. in our state. now the biggest impact will be

vaporizers and hookahs, and e cigarettes and pipe tobacco. the sales banned to anyone under 18 and that already exists in colorado but nationally a big problem. the fda estimates more than 3 million middle and high school students used e-cigs regularly last year and what the rules do not do is ban advertisements or sircht kinds of flavoring -- different kinds of flavoring with the e-cigs and this this is what attracts underaged users to the product in the first place. >> regulations fall woefully short and kids are using the flavors and targeting children, and sadly the fda did nothing about it. >> and american lung association now saying more needs to be done. under the regulation, the manufacturers will have to register their products to the fda for review. and the bait shops also can't hands out samples at their stores. and there is debate, and uncertainty, when it comes to the health effects of e cigarettes and another reason why the fda says it is requiring manufacturers to

data. guys? >> okay, jessica, thank you. it is 6:39 right now. and we will soon be able to read the e-mails of some city council members, loveland, fort colins, and layer mer county, are now allowing the public to see what the elected officials are sending. only their government e-mail accounts though are acceptable. communications marked confidential by counselors or other centers will not be viewable. city officials say this is all a way of making government more transparent. thunderstorms over the western slopes have had a tremendousam in them. and over the next two hours, they will die down. only to reform in the heat of the day later in the day. not very many storms here over the front range. so don't be counting on too many areas getting rain. and strongest storms today, will be over the northeast corner of colorado, and specifically logan, phillips, sedgewick counties, and up into the nebraska panhandle. those are areas where we could see some severe thunderstorms. later in the day. cathy will be tracking those for you. >> all right.

we have a little bit of a short circuit in the monsoon this week. and a lot of that is because of tropical storm javier. now moving toward baja. and pretty strong tropical storm. right now with 65 mile-an-hour winds. it looks like it will make land fall later in the evening with 50 to 60 mile-an-hour winds. and that will go toward cabo san lucas. this is going to be inches of rain and the 50 to 60 mile-an-hour winds. and what that is doing is pulling some of the available moisture away from colorado. which is lowering our storm chances over the next few days. and they're not zero, but they sure are not as good as they would be during a normal mon soon time. >> thank you, marty. 6:44. we are checking in with sky 9 over the mousetrap drive.

today, we have less moisture to work with. one of the reasons is tropical storm javier going in the gulf of california, to cabo san lucas, a huge mass of clouds down there. and storms going, not only in western colorado, but now a new line of storms with fort morgan and brush, through weld county and up into nebraska. and going to be a stormy day over the northeast, because we will get the storms this morning and then again, this afternoon. and fairly quiet around here. one or two storms over the i-25 corridor late this afternoon. and not very many of us are going to be lucky enough to see rain, or i should say experience rain, and you might be able to see it off in the distance, and are you not really going to get any at your place. and the temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s, early today. and with 70s and 80s, in the mountains. and we have the thunderstorms,

in the afternoon. to reform on a stronger basis. late in the day. and we have very few storms here and a couple in the central part of the state and rain today, pretty good in the eastern san juan, and in parts of monument hill, especially monument hill south, down to the northwest side of colorado springs. and the heaviest rain in the northeast corner of the state, with showers this morning. and then again this afternoon. 80s, 90s, and east and west. and with 70s and 80s in today, it is 89, and just a little bit above that, at 92, with partly cloudy skies, and isolated storm, brief rumble of thunder and lightning early this evening before we clear out. and slightly warmer tomorrow. and rain chances are going to be small because the monsoon has been broken up a bit by the big tropical storm. sky 9 over 125 at 104th and southbound traffic is not quite backed up to the north end of

a big problem on 270 and talk about that on the maps. a live look here out across the c-dot camera and highway 85, low visibility to the north near greeley. and highway 85 still in the clear with pretty normal drive times. overall. and 25 and university. usually we've got this backup. so there is nothing unusual going on here. but check this out, southbound delays, they are coming through, now turning it around, on the right shoulder stall. not a crash, a stall blocking the right shoulder drive. and backups are all the way to santa fe, and al problem, i mentioned, we still have an accident at york street and 12 minutes is the drive time, southbound 25, crowded out, linking up to i-70. whether you take 25 to 70, or over to 270, both are pretty tough options today. >> amelia, thank you. >> boy, a mess out there in some places. today's top stories, passengers stuck at airports around the world, including d.i.a. because of a delta computer outage. all of the flights are waiting to take off.

this is a live look at d.i.a. and you can see long lines at the check-in. so right now delta doesn't know when things will be fixed. they are warning travelers to expect delays. and cancellations. that line is just longer and longer. >> what a nightmare. >> and the second time in two years, a competitor in the boulder ironman has died. 34-year-old woman, hit and killed, during the cycling portion of the race on sunday. and michelle walters was from nebraska. and she was hit at u.s. 36 just h of the car was under the influence. this is the fourth cycling death in boulder county in the last three months. a 12-year-old is being treated at a denver hospital this morning, on sunday, the child fell 75 feet, near helen hunt falls. that is a water fall near colorado springs. the 12-year-old was then flown here to children's hospital colorado. we are working to find out more about how that child is doing today. the denver police department has a new plan to
