>> no one loves the relays more than michael phelps and in the water he goes. >> for tammy -- for team usa, it was a night of stunning moments. michael phelps made his rio debut in spectacular finish swimming second leg of the relay team, after an incredible turn off the wall giving his team the lead and the gold. his mother, fiancee, and newborn son, boomer, cheering from the stands. >> they are unable to contain their emotions during the medal ceremony. on the women's side, superstar katie ledecky made it look easy smashing her own record and it wasn't even close, finishing almost five seconds ahead of the

world record. >> her world record just one of many sunday night. and sweden's sword databaset -- strom breaking the record for 100 meter butterfly defeating the previous in third. >> to be at the olympics again is amazing and all i wanted was to get a medal. i'm extremely happy with that. >> and earlier in the day it was the end of an era on the court. >> for the first time in their olympic doubles career, the williams sisters lose. >> venus and serena williams losing their first ever olympic match as a duo. the three-time gold medal winners falling in the opening round to the czech republic. >> there's a little bit of moisture starting to appear on the camera lens. >> this morning one olympian is recovering after suffering severe injuries flipping over her handle bars in a terrifying accident. >> she's down. >> the 33-year-old dutch cyclist losing control during the women's road race leading at the

cause of her horrific crash tweeting from her hospital bed, she says "i'm now in the hospital with injuries and fractures but will be fine. most of all super disappointed after best race of my career" and this week all eyes are on the u.s. women's gymnastics team led by simone biles who even has a move named after her. she'll be competing along with aly raisman in the overall finals later this week. >> taking a look at the medal count. team usa leading by a lot followed by china, italy and japan. right now a lot of olympic action. we're just getting started. >> that is awesome. we like that beginning. michael phelps and katie ledecky entered the games with huge expectations and so far so good.

your team? >> the young bucks brought tears to our eyes. i was saying to nathan, i was trying to hold back as much as i could. he started shedding tears and then ryan started shedding tears and that's one of the coolest races to be part of. being part of the 400 free relay was a dream of mine and i've been on the good side and bad side of it. i'm happy we were able to win that relay as a team. >> and the united states will win gold in the 400 relay again. >> your son was in the audience. how awesome was that? >> i was trying to find him during the awards ceremony. i couldn't find him. i finally found him. he was asleep for the race. hopefully he was awake for the race. if not, i'll replay it when he's old enough. >> does it make this that much sweeter? >> a lot more emotional, yes. thinking of him constantly and pictures every day. it's an inspiration to have him here. >> you have a lot more races. are you ready for them?

know, i should just quit now. >> you swam the third leg of this, right? >> yes. >> when you were standing there watching your teammate tap that wall and you watch number one pop up, tell us what went through you at that moment. >> initial moment was i was just exhausted. my legs were killing me. my body was in so much pain but the split second like, yes, gold medal. we finally won. we brought gold medal back to team usa. i finally won a medal. >> a little refrench. the french won this event in the last two olympic games. team usa really wanted this. then i want to take you to the medal ceremony, ryan. okay. they start to play the national anthem and the flag goes up and for all of the right reasons, you lost it. >> yeah.

received awards before as they played the national anthem but something -- this was different. just the emotions kind of manifested themselves on the podium and the tears started rolling. >> wow. how did it feel knowing that not only were you doing something amazing for this wonderful relay team, for michael phelps, he got number 19 thanks to a group effort with you guys. how did that feel? >> it f he's a great athlete. he kind of of gives like a sense of confidence to other swimmers, when i'm around him i feel stronger and stand a little bit taller. feel a little bit more confident. >> can we go back to that medal ceremony one more time in the control room. people ask us all the time, ryan, why do we love covering the olympics. can i tell you, your face during that ceremony, that's why we love covering the olympics. that emotion of an athlete

shooting career started five years ago when she went on a hunting trip with her grandfather and now is a gold medallist. that's the essence of the games. >> we talked to ryan. we know what phelps did this weekend. we know what katie ledecky did this weekend. it's looking good for the u.s. swim team. >> last night was a big night. we're used to seeing them bring home gold medals. to see michael phelps and katie ledecky do. what ledecky did. take a ste. she won by five seconds and shattered the world record and that's the start -- >> her world record. right? >> exactly, the start of what people think will be gold for her. >> can we talk gymnastics for a second? if you look at the beginning portion, the u.s. is so far out in front. ten-point spread with china. how do you see this playing out? >> the great thing is internal competition. we know they have the best of the world. simone biles incredible. but that competition, i think, forces everyone else to perform at the moment.

>> no gold medal for you. coming up, we'll take a closer look at that impressive debut for the women's gymnastics team, and don't forget, you can catch nbc's prime time coverage with michael phelps, katie ledecky, and missy franklin all in action tonight at 7:00, 6:00 central here on nbc. let's go back to savannah in new york. breaking news that will cause problems at airports all day long. delta is dealing with a computer outage this morning that forced the airline to ground flights worldwide. let's get right to nbc's gabe gutierrez at hartsfield jackson te the delta hub. >> reporter: this has been a big travel mess throughout the night. long lines at hartsfield but thankfully within the past few minutes, literally within the last few minutes, the check in kiosks have been back up and running so now some of these lines have thinned out. the main problem here is the check in area. luckily security lines are still going just fine. the problem has been the delta employees have had to manually

lines over at dfw and reagan in d.c. this all started over night with this worldwide outage causing problems from rome to l.a.x. delta has not said what caused the problem or how long it would take to get fixed but at hartsfield they say flights are delayed until 7:30 a.m. eastern time and we heard that from several airports. delta released a written statement urging all passengers to check the status of their flights while the issue is being assessed. as you mentioned, this could cause ripple effects throughout the day for delta passengers. best advice, check your flight before you head to the airport and give yourself enough time. savannah? >> takes a long time to work that out of the system. gabe, thank you. let's do politics now. presidential race and new national poll showing that rough week for donald trump's campaign has put him further behind hillary clinton. nbc's hallie jackson is at trump

>> reporter: good morning. the new numbers confirming the controversies over the last week have hurt donald trump as he looks to change the subject. he'll head from new york to detroit for a speech on the economy, what a senior campaign source tells me is something that will stitch together trump's vision on taxes and the economy. all of it as trump looks to change the subject and turn the page. in the motor city today, donald trump ng stalled campaign now getting new backing from a member of a presidential family that's so far stayed sidelined. jeb bush's son, george p. bush, telling texan republicans time to rally around the nominee though stopping short of an endorsement. >> from team push, it's a bitter pill to swallow.

two-thirds of voters saying he doesn't have the temperament and personality to be president. trump focusing on different numbers today. >> i've employed tens of thousands of people. >> reporter: the billionaire businessman talking jobs and the economy in what a top adviser describes to nbc news as a vision speech outlining his plan for taxes, trade, energy and regulatory reform, expected to offer parents a deduction on childcare expenses and plan to cut the corporate tax rate to 15%. trump is trying for a reset fallout from a week of controversies, hitting hillary clinton with a new line of attack. >> honestly, i don't think she's all there. >> reporter: his democratic rivals still knocked off message over emails, and knocked by fact-checkers for how she's responded to questions about the controversy. >> i may have short circuited and for that i will try to

september 2014, phelps was pulled over and arrested for dui. let's go back to september 29th. that's the night you were arrested. dui. not your first run-in with that subject. what led up to that? >> i set myself down a downward spiral. i think it was more of a sign than anything else that i had to get something under control, whatever it was. i look back at that night and everything happened for a reason. >> so this was a cry for help? >> honestly, sort of, at one point, i felt like i didn't want to see another day. i felt like it should be over. >> with mounting pressure from family and friends, phelps would eventually check himself into a rehab clinic in arizona. you checked yourself into the meadows for 45 days. you've said you don't know if you're an alcoholic. maybe you have a binch problem -- binge problem. did you check yourself into

>> i checked myself in because i think i was at a point in my life where something needed to change, and i needed to figure those things out. >> phelps says he figured those things out and now it's back to the pool. how is training going now? what's the difference? >> i want to be here. that's the difference. i had no desire to go to workout before. i want to retire how i want to retire. to do that. i haven't trained like this in decades. >> and the results are speaking for themselves. >> phelps now has the lead for the americans. >> looking again like the most dominant swimmer in olympic history as his mother, fiancee, and son, boomer, cheer him on. and like the rest of us, waiting to see the limits of michael
