rain going on and thunderstorms that are weakening and continue to do so. for us, a few clouds here and there and temperatures in the lower to middle 70s by mid morning. and now it is going to be slightly cooler today, and still, very close to that average high of 88 degrees. and by the way, we reached our highest average high, and we are kind of sliding down from there. and get the brief round of thunderstorms during the afternoon today. and if you happen to get a storm, your potential rain, is still fairly light. only in the tenth rain area or so. so for the early part of the evening, the storms move out. by i would say 7:00. and however, the clouds hang in, and amelia, that's because of some cooler air that is moving in. we will talk about what that does to our next couple of days weather in a few minutes. >> thank you, marty,. 5:31. as we get across the thursday commute, so far, so good, a pretty easy ride, across most parts of town and a live look here at i-70 and brighton where

right through. both sides still in the mid- 60s. and connecting with 25 or 225, and shouldn't be a problem for you at all. and map-wise though, we are clear across the city. but we have a pretty big problem up to the wyoming state line. in fact, colorado, 125, is shut down, between the border, of colorado and wyoming. and down to highway 127. and that's all because of the tanker that overturned this morning. and pretty big closure, and there will be some alternates and police up there helping to direct traffic and a quick reminder, corey, lots of schools back in session and aurora and adams and douglas county and pay extra attention especially near the school zones. >> got to be careful. amelia, thank you. today we will find out if the planned parenthood shooter is competent to stand trial. this after months of treatment and evaluations and 9 news reporter tarhonda thomas is here with more and he has been through this process before. >> yes, he has, corey. the latest competency evaluation for robert dear. he had one to finish up in may which has delayed his trial. and that is because at the time

admitted shooter was unfit it to stand trial but the judge wanted to come back in a few months, and re-evaluate the defendant, after receiving mental treatment. that's where today's hearing comes into play. we will find out if he is still unfit to stand trial, or if he is being competent. lots of court outbursts during the trial. and three people died in the attack on the colorado springs planned parenthood last november. the shooter waged the attack in opposite to abortions. a forensic previously determined that the defendant had to receive treatment before the trial could continue. and they will look at the competence hearing and find out where the trial goes from here. >> thanks, tarhonda. when you dial the numbers 911, you know the person on the other end is there to help you but sometimes the people answering the emergency calls get too tired. and dispatcher have tolds that you that could lead to mistakes.

with very little notice. 9 wants to know, agreed to shield the employee's identity to protect against retaliation. sometimes a couple of hours notice and most recently it is eight minutes. some people just basically lost it it at work. >> and the employee said that sometimes they do several 14- hour days in a row. and in 2013, the city was spending about $41,000 a month as of mid july, of this year, the city was spending about $75,000 a month in overtime. and the executive director of the denver 911 office says filling dispatcher positions is not easy. >> it is not something that everyone can do. so we really have strict guidelines who we can hire. >> is a america going to be made because we're so tired? we're just so tired.

about 20% in the past two years, but the number of employees hasn't changed all that much. we are told that the dispatcher academy is just graduating its biggest class ever, with 25 students, so shom help should be on -- some help should be on the way. the west nile virus is spreading in colorado. boulder county confirmed the first three cases of the season yesterday. including a 13-year-old in longmont. so far this year, there have been more than a dozen cases, and one death from west nile. and the state health department took to twitter to remind people once again that 80% of those who get west nile have no symptoms. and fewer than 1% who get it, get seriously ill. and the virus is is rarely fatal but it can happen. once again, protect yourself from those mosquitoes. 5:35 right now. michael phelps is passing the torch to the new leader of the usa swimming.

and now won the fourth gold medaling in the olympic games and almost a sure thing for her fifth. cheryl and matt are in reno now and her fan club is growing fast. >> corey, can you imagine, getting like 10,000 new twitter followers in a couple of days? now, katie le decky, as of today, in rio, has more gold medals than any other athlete in any sport from any country. and like you said, she could get another one. much as anybody but sometimes your best compliments come from your peers. and we all think you're doing a fantastic job out here cheryl preheim. you look great. >> i needed that, matt, thank you. >> and we asked missy franklin, who does she love to watch swim the most? >> honestly, katie. i mean it is so hard not to just like jaw-drop whenever katie le decky swims. she is kind of re-writing the rules of our sport right now.

when she is swimming, it is so dominating that it is like oh, my gosh, it is so inspiring to watch. >> katie led the 800 relay team last night. missy did swim in the prelims to get team usa in the finals and the second fastest time and fighting her way back after a tough start to the week. >> we should explain because missy swam in the prelim and helped get the seed in the team for the finals she gets a gold meda gold medal of the swimming career. here we are in rio. among the greatest athletes of the world. and we were thinking, you know, we are working out, i mean we are walking, we are walking anyway. >> we are walking. the olympics are always a lot of walking. eight, nine miles a day, carrying lots of stuff. you know, i don't know if it is quite what the athletes are doing but we are getting in our exercise. >> yes. >> we may not need, you know, massage or acupuncture, although we would take it. >> the weird stuff that athlete

the rtd a-line between union station and d.i.a. is back to normal this morning. with travelers yesterday, boy, it was a headache. they had to deal with hours of delays once again. and we caught up with some travelers as they tried to navigate those delays. >> a little stressful getting through the airport that you do and then trying to find where is this rail? and the airport. and then we managed to find that. and it was very exciting when we found it, until we found out it was closed. >> with any new thing, especially with this much of a requirement, to get people back and forth to the airport on time, there is always going to be some problems. >> there is definite tally that. passengers were forced to take buses between the 61st and pena station. and the airport, when the line

and rtd spokesperson blamed the power outage on the tracks for the problem. >> frustrating. >> the drug enforcement administration is scouring through american's travel information, looking for people who may be carrying money for drug traffickers and led them to hundreds of millions in cash. and 9 news reporter vida urbonas is looking into this new investigation. vida? >> good morning, this comes from an investigation by our partners at "usa today," and now, it found d. e. a. agents million in cash from more than 5,000 people over the past decade. however, in most cases, the suspected drug money was taken from the person they profiled, gave them a receipt, but the report says they never detained them or even charged them with a crime. and nearly $11 million was seized from d.i.a. the investigation finds the d. e. a. has profiled passengers at nearly every major airline across the country and amtrak trains. the justice department reports

that money was indeed linked to drug trafficking. the d.e.a. reportsly gets the information about the passengers from informants inside the travel industry. for example, from the ticket counter employee. the report finds agents assigned to airports and train stations singled out passengers for questioning. or searches. after they might have bought like one way tickets or paid for their tickets in cash. and now, a former superintendenter of the d.e.a. group says -- supervisor of the d.e.a. group says the d.e.a. counts o they didn't know about all of this. the d.e.a. is not commonning on the investigation, but -- commenting on the investigation, but the source says it is extensive. amelia. >> thank you, vida. we are taking a look outside, across our denver drive. and it is off to a pretty easy beginning. we are taking a live look at boulder, a pretty view to the flat irons there and a really light start across 36 to the north of boulder and no traffic delays along 36. or 93 this morning. in fact it is a nice clear beginning there as well as here in the city.

coming in southbound out of thornton and northland, here along i-25 near 92nd avenue. and it is a clear transition into commerce city. and 70s looking good, marty. looking at a drive time here, eastbound and westbound, from 225 to the mousetrap, of only 9 minutes. >> and around here, we are dry now, we are also dry in rio this morning. however, there are some showers to be found in and around the area. mostly going to be hanging offshore, today. and so in general, the forecast today, most of the venues, in side. and the temperatures in the lower 70s. a few clouds here and there. but by and large, it should be dry. throughout the day today. and down in south america, where matt and cheryl seem to

welcome back. the air force academy superintendent is going to stay with the school a little longer than expected. the lieutenant general michelle johnson will stay on for another year, beyond her normal re says she will hold the title through the summer of 2017. johnson is the first woman to lead any of the three major service academies. all right, let's check in with marty. >> thank you, gary. around here, today, we have a few clouds here and there, and we will break them up as the day goes on. very stormy down south. by the way, it is hot in the midwest. if you have relatives in iowa or missouri or oklahoma and more heat advisory for high heat conditions.

they are beginning to fizzle out. we will see a few more storms form in that part of the state again for this evening. for us, morning clouds give way to midday sun and very pleasant at noon and four or five degrees cooler than yesterday at noon and we will see a few pockets of thunderstorms here, i will put in that 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. time frame for us, and they will get stronger, going to the east. if you happen to get a storm, anywhere from a few hundredths to possible, slightly higher amounts in the foothills and daytime highs in the mid-70s in the mountains. and a little bit drier, in southwestern colorado, with isolated storms, forming, throughout the central mountains and northeastern colorado, and in northeastern colorado, where we could see some big thunderstorms during the afternoon but more especially during the evening. and low 90s around grand junction. and 80s around here and a little warmer down south. 89 today, with a couple of

7:00, 7:30 and the clouds are not out of here tonight. cloudy tonight, into tomorrow, and still going to hold off any storm activity to tomorrow. and then it actually looks a little better south of town than around here. and during the day, saturday, i think we see a couple of thunderstorms in the afternoon, and then drier and hotter again next week. marty, the colorado state patrol just tweeted out a picture of this rolled tanker truck. up along colorado 125. between 127 and the wyoming here. you can see the tanker is on its side, and this is going to be just a major closure, in order to reopen, they will have to upright the vehicle and of course tow it up and clean up any debris in the surrounding area and of course, they are still working in the dark. and that closure extends out across the drive to the far west and up north, and between wyoming, and colorado, 127, and 125 is completely shut down. and those local detours are in place. and back here in denver, we are
