another service disruption along rtd train to the plane and the reasons from the delays today. >> today the drug enforcement administration announced it will leave marijuana on the list of scheduled one drugs meaning the government considers it to have no medical value. heroin and lsd are >> reporter: two physicians not from colorado asked the dea to reclassify marijuana and make it a schedule 2 drugs. drugs on that list can be prescribed by doctors and they do have medicinal values. meg and cocaine are scheduled ii along with oxycodone and ritalin and not marijuana. promarijuana people say it is

other federal policies that impact pot users and growers. the marijuana industry struggles to use banks and making pot a schedule 2 drug would not change that. the dea did not make that decision. the fda looked at the research. the fda looked at what was valuable and did not find enough evidence that marijuana has an accepted is necessary and says the feds have high potential for abuse. today we heard from proponent and opponents of pot both saying more research is needed. >> there is a bit of research suggesting there is real therapies coming out but you would be able do to so much more if it weren't in schedule

moving it out of schedule 100 when that is creating the research. >> we have had marijuana passed in 2000 and now in 2016, we need to get on the ball and research this and let science tell us whether it does or not and if science says it doesn't that's the end and says it does, good. then let's put it like any have a doctor to prescribe it and monitor it. as far as the announcement the dea did denounce a policy change to encourage more research. the dea will allow more labs to grow pot for research the dea had the power to do that.

just had a couple of rain showers pass through the fort collins area and moving towards greeley and down and a couple of shots but no lightning. in northeast colorado. later we will have a shot of seeing some storms turn severe the biggest threat heavy downpours and wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. and that section wyoming and nebraska and northeast colorado. well, we got a break. a break from the heat. temperatures basically remaining in the upper 80s. this afternoon at 89 in longmont and idaho springs and ever green. i hope you get used to it and hope you like the nice refreshing break from those 90- degree temperatures because we are looking at 80 degrees coming up. also i will have a look at the

the university of colorado a line. it is the second day as you mentioned in a row that riders had to be shuttled between the 61st and kenya station. rtd says a portion of the b line was not running properly and in the past few minutes, like 15 minutes, rtd tweeted that b line is back and no delays are expected. meanwhile we did speak with passengers earlier that are frustrated. one rider is an experienced power outages half a dozen times and he says it is becoming increasingly more difficult to diapente on it as a trusted form of education. >> it is frustrating when i leave my house an earlier because the train may have something goes wrong. they had so long to test the train there shouldn't be that many problems.

comment regarding the a line or b line power outages, only that they occurred and crews are working to get them up and running. we had been reaching out to rtd and we have not heard back and a lot of people that we talked to today were coming from out of town and they didn't realize this was kind of out of the normal. >> we have had a lot from passengers and we forget about the employees. >> they see this more and more, if it happens one, two, how do i get to work on time, i don't know i can depend on this. increasing frustration. >> we will stay on it, thank you, christine. >> a gradual hike in the minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2020 will be decided by colorado voters. a ballot measured to bump up the minimum wage was certified having the necessary 98,000 signatures to make the state wise ballots. the current minimum wage $8.31

it would be raised to $9.30 and the next year 90 cents an hour each year until it hits 12 bucks an hour by 2020. supporters say that minimum wage hikes could be on ballots in five states this fall. the wage measure is the 4th question going to voters. and two are technical changes from the state legislature and one is a universal healthcare proposal. >> nowhere's ballot is growing fast aside from the presidential race there will be tax initiatives discussed. most recent came when pewter school district announced it would approach voters with a mill vote. looking towards 375 million- dollar growth project to accommodate the needs. this includes new schools and an athletic facility and quarter cents sales tax to fundamental health facility. the county is looking for a culture budget because the county continues to grow. you know they are progrowth

like we have to handle the growth, whatever we did, the kids are coming. we need to educate them and that's our jobs and you will find it up and down the front range and i think the entire state of colorado. >> the school district is attracting 500 new kids each year. they say 375 million-dollar project will be the most expensive in its history. a study released today from triple afinds thousands of crashes on america's roads are being call by stops on the roads. the study was a factor in more than 200,000 police reported crashes from 2011 to 2014. and those crashes resulted in 39,000 injuries and 500 deaths. the study also found 2/3 of all road debris is caused by some other vehicle. either not securing the load properly or a part falling off or tire blow-outs. >> the big point that we want drivers to realize is that these crashes are completely

grades three through five and some minorities groups improved and areas of great concern. here are some of the troubling numbers. in 8th grade number 19 percent were proficient. in high school science, only 11% of blacks and hispanics are learning enough and 7th grade social studies 7% of hispanics are reaching marks of efficiency. the achievement rates is a problem. at fairfield high school in boulder there is standardized tests. almost everyone opted out but the principal is not concerned about having no test scores to report. >> i think for a school it is a data point but we have other data points to gauge the progress. the standardized test

the principal will wait and see how his school is impacted. the state says overall it is still studied. fairfield high school started the protests and walkouts. >> nelson garcia. thank you. macy's plans to close about 100 stores next year as the department store attempting to become more nim bell in a competitive market. that represents 14% of its store base. executives patterns and more competitive online. they have 675 stores and it has not revealed which locations to close. they will reinvest in the instore experience and boost the profile. they plan to add more brand shops and things of it a store within a store. executives think adding more in- house events joining customers in the door and they want to

a boy has fallen off of a classic wooden roller coaster at a pennsylvania amusement park.

park says he fell and was conscious and air lifted on to children's hospital of pittsburgh. 50 miles west. we don't know about the boy's condition or where he was and unclear whether the ride did not function. it opened in 1938 and it takes riders up and down a wooded hillside. it does not require seat belts and children unfour feet tall e adult. searchers looking through debris after massive explosion at an apartment complex in washington d.c. at least two people are dead and dozens injured and five others missing. we turn to the latest for nbc chris clarkment. >> that looks like a plane. this shows how devastating the explosion was wednesday night and from the emergency officials just how deadly. two bodies pulled from the rubble thursday morning.

least two or three buildings. a fire broke out today at a power station in kansas city missouri. two transformers caught fire. firefighters and emergency services shut off the power and waited for the fire to burn out. no reports of any injuries. officials say the fire was caused by a circuit malfunction. the faulty circuit served one customer and the electricity is being restored after being switched to another circuit. >> the orange county sheriff's office released video of a pill that his landing gear would not deploy and sent the text to his family telling them he loved them before the attempted emergency landing. the air traffic controllers worked with the pilot for over an hour and the pilot attempted to land at orlando executive airport and fire and rescue

once again a warm one. out of the airport in the upper 80s mostly cloudy skies and the wind relatively calm. here in the 9 backyard the temperatures at 85 and it feels nice especially with the clouds that are starting to push back in. on hd doppler 9, watching the storms. they have been firing up not om across colorado but also sections of the northern plains. part of omaha ve and five inches of water coming in and also a storm system lurking off of the coastline watching rain showers forlouisiana. still tapping into the monsoon flow and bringing the winds out of the southwest and ushering that tropical moisture to our state. this afternoon things will be more isolated. not everyone seeing the showers. see more to the west of fort collins with a line through the

in the downtown denver area a couple of light sprinkles and gusty wind and that's it. tonight temperatures around the mid-50s and those storms will be pushing out and we will be watching the clouds sticking with us for the next couple of hours really as we head throughout the overnight. moon set after one. this will be the best go out and see the meteor showers. up to 200 meteors. it should be spectacular but mother nature not cooperating. across the eastern plains we will be watching the clouds and also some thunderstorms and it will be continuing overnight so i don't think the view will be best out there. if anything, head west, friends, that's where you will find the clear skies in denver and points to the southwest and i would say marginal and after 3:00 a.m. we will get the clouds as they

able to catch a spectacular view. just set the alarms, right? wake up at 3:00 a.m. and take a peek and it should be gorgeous. the rest of theey the showers on and off. through well county and by one, right at moon set when everything should be looking spectacular, we are watching the clouds and the showers continuing. and things start to clear out to the west and by six a.m., the sunshine starts to by five or six p.m., a couple more scattered showers pushing in and we will be watching for slightly cooler temperatures. chance for seeing some storms turning severe will be to the south. you can see the drought monitor. just came out today. now includes parts of the denver metro area. up there in for the collins, greeley and southwest colorado and abnormally dry because we have had hot and dry conditions for the past couple of weeks. tomorrow will be a cooler one. low 80s for a lot of us and in the 80s for the eastern plains

this is 9 news. >> oh it is another bad day to take the train. the a line has been down since just after 10:00 this morning. rtd blames the damaged power wire from stopping the train from the station to dia. passengers had to be bused to the airport and a new b line was down for a while. and that's now back up and running. no word yet when the a line is running again. >> it is a strange folks in the burbs getting to a station means you have to drive and you might as well drive. the city of centennial has partnered with lyft for a six month period to give folks free rides to and from the drag creek h td station. hopes to entice them to use the rtd. xerox has an app for commuters
