>> teammates, close friends, medalists tonight in rio, biles and raisman. that brings us to a look at the medal count of day six. presented by mcdonald's, supporting athletes on their another big day and night for the americans, with five golds overall. while the united states owns more gold medals than any other country in olympic history, fiji won a gold in rugby for its first medal of any kind. a nation with a population less than delaware, fiji loves rugby like no other sport. children grow up with a ball in their hands. entire villages huddle around radios and small tvs to listen to or watch the national team play.

15,000-seat national stadium. there you see it, in the capital city. and they watched the gold medal match won by their countrymen there tonight. meanwhile, turning back to the headliners here in rio, a group that included aly raisman, winning a silver medal and the performance of her life in the all around. raisman has five medals in her distinguished olympic career, three of them gold. tonight's silver for raisman, came on a night that belonged to a pair rank among the best ever in their respective sports. over five olympics, michael phelps has set records that likely will never be broken. maybe not even approached. while over merely five days, simone biles has left an impression that will never be forgotten. two champions who once again tonight, not only won, but truly outdistanced their competition. still, there was another note-worthy champion tonight.

the last time the denver broncos were on the football field they walked off with the lombardi trophy. tonight they didn't walk off the field with the starting quarterback. drew soicher joins us with the team's first pre-season test. >> however the broncos won their exhibition opener for the fifth straight year tonight. mark sanchez made a pretty good first impression completing ten of his first 13 passes including a touchdown to demaryius thomas. trevor siemian made a pretty good run as well. terrific confidence builder for all three qbs. broncos win 22-0. >> boy, that's a pretty good start for you.

200-meter backstroke to the point where she set new world and olympic world records that still stand today. she finished next to last. her semi-final time tonight was 5.7 seconds slower than her world record from london. after the race missy had an emotional message she wanted to offer directly to her fans. >> i still have so much left to give to this sport. i think i probably need to work on the love and the fun of it. that's something that has really been missing for me. definitely going to take some time and figure out how to get that back. i mean i just kind of feel shattered right now. to put so much of my life into something and so much of my heart. to come up so short of my expectations for myself and the expectations that i have being a part of team u.s.a. it kills me, literally kills me. you know, i wish i could tell you what happened. i have no idea, but that is

showdown between these two, michael phelps was dominant. phelps was tied for first half way through the race. in the final 100 meters he left no doubt he was the best in the world. phelps won by two full seconds. locthe came in fifth. phelps becomes the first swimmer in history to win four gold medals in one event. it's his 13th individual and 22nd gold medal of his career. phelps swims again tomorrow night in the 100-meter butterfly. to say the u.s. women understatement. tonight in rio the final five again showed how far ahead of the rest of the world they are at these games. simone biles won gold, the teammate aly raisman by two points. that's more than the margin of victory in that event from 1980 to 2012 combined. raisman had nearly the same margin over the third place gymnast. biles brought raisman up on the mat to celebrate the moment together. biles gold medal continues

u.s. women in the olympic all- around competition. an american woman has won the event in each of the last four games. carly patterson in '04, natsia luiken in '08. shawn johnson in '12, and then biles in 2016. the plane was out of commission again today. service was out for seven hours due to a damaged power wire. this is the second day in a passengers again were bussed between the 61st and pena station at dia. the a line has struggled with the series of high-profile failures since it opened in the spring. and rtd's new b line train had issues today. service between union station and westminster went down due to power issues, leaving passengers to rely on buses there as well. trains began moving again at 3:00 in the afternoon about the time sky9 was in the area. america's latest conversation about crime,

medal after 16 summer games and eight winter olympics. the island nation has a gold. seeing the entire country came to a standstill today to watch fiji play great britain in the rugby gold medal game. rugby is a big deal in fiji and they whipped the u.k. 43-7. here is what's to watch for tomorrow. u.s. women start the knockout round of the soccer competition. they play sweden in the semifinals tomorrow at 10:00 a. sweden suhagen, who coached the u.s. to gold. you can see the game live on the nbc sports network. the first of the games have focused on swimming or gymnastics, but track events get underway on friday. the first round of the 100 meters is friday afternoon. semifinals are set for sunday night. bolt will become the first to be the world's fastest human in three straight games.

it is almost the weekend. we have cooler weather expected and not as much rain. while we need the moisture a lot of you have outdoor plans. we certainly heard about that and i -- the think the weather will cooperate. captured by so many of you, a double rainbow. different views of the towering clouds and the wonderful scenery up in the high country. but the big weather story you know is the perseid meteor shower, one brightest in years. that was about the time at 1:00 in the morning that we do anticipate kind of a burst of meteor. double the meteor, double the speed. it should be amazing like oh what about the cloud cover? well here is where we are right now. guess what within the hour look at how much drying there is. look at how much clearing there is to the north. by 1:00 in the morning look at you littleton, denver, arvada, boulder looking good.

5:00 a.m. looking good not just in denver, but across the eastern plains and up in the high country with a good shot at seeing some of those meteors tonight. 64 at the airport, the winds are southwest at 6 and the winds are calm here in the backyard outside the studios with 64 degrees downtown. it was a little bit cooler today and then right about 4:00 we'll spike 90 out at dia holding about 84 for much of the afternoon. still quite hot in southeastern colorado and colinear cool -- cooler in the 60 degrees at 7:00 a.m. low 70s by 10:00 in the morning. pretty good thunderstorms just blowing up out on the eastern plains tonight. one cell right on the border of burlington and ray out there. the potential for 60 miles per hour winds. the heavy weather is in the midwest. we've been watching the weather between denver and chicago with the broncos in chicago and all the nasty weather that stayed out of the area of the game and right now we're going to focus

rain coming in with the storm that way. things are calming down just a little bit up around the the north platte area in minneapolis, but those showers will be moving into chicago and this system, this upper level low is bringing heavy rain all week is pushing westward. so the rain shields will be increasing tomorrow across six states. but notice the monsoon plume is south and east of colorado and that means less in the way of rain from the storms that will develop tomorrow and saturday. but this front is going to offer us a cool down. the 70s and the 80s for much of the northern rockies and be northern plains. the heat and the south and the southwest as they will continue right for your weekend. thunderstorms will be continuing for you as they move out. clearing up and down the i-25 quarter and a good travel for those getting an early jump on the weekend. a mild night ahead. 60 in grand junction. 56 denver, 64 lamar. temperatures for eastern colorado, much cooler. and a nice day into the high country tomorrow. 69 in nederland.
