5:32 am
marty joins us, too. we have a little rain last night. that was very nice. could we see a repeat, you think? >> if you have to move way south, gary, you will have to pack it up and move down south, or closer to mon month hill to see any kind of rain, today. we really stabilized things. and the cold front came through and it cleared us out. it is a fantastic pre-dawn sky. here in denver this morning. and that combined with low pollen, it should make for a really good-looking friday. monsoon wind patter and the midwest, right now, from nebraska through iowa, into illinois, getting pounded, with heavy rain. and we are also seeing some pretty good thunderstorms, along highway 50. and just now moving out of the area. really getting the east side of kiawah county and lamar and over toward into western kansas and that's going to continue here for another hour or so. and then move out this morning. and any new storm development, see how it kind of rides down
5:33 am
in between -- monument hill and in between denver and colorado springs, you will look south with the buildups and then drift south to colorado springs late this afternoon which is where we're forecasting most of the rain to be for the rest of the day, which leads us to a pretty quiet day. the storm prediction center, has us in a marginal risk for severe weather and i think at the 6:00 update, they will update that and push it farther to the south. a nice cool start to the morning, and it is dry air, and we end up today. and i would put our storm chances at least for the immediate metro area, very low. >> going to feel great outside today. especially if you are one of those folks who may be walks or rides a bike to work. the cooler temperatures should make it it easier later this afternoon. here around town today, we started fairly busy with breaking news up north along i- 25 near 52. but for now, it is looking quiet, calm and clear. and 70 west of25 and great
5:34 am
is looking pretty great. definitely friday light there and a little more light creeping into the picture along u.s. 36 north of boulder as we look toward the flat irons. as we mentioned, a closure along i-25 northbound at 52. and it was breaking news and police activity there. we are still waiting to figure out exactly what was taking place. at one point only one lane was getting by and now, as of about 20 minutes ago, all lanes are getting through with know major delays. so really great start getting up to fort colins and southbounders toward the springs looking good. ande morning. >> sounds good. friday light. another gold medal day for team usa. gymnastics, swimming, our athletes did not disappoint. cheryl and matt live in rio. and simone biles two for two and not done yet. >> oh, my gosh. is she not amazing? we just love watching her. what we have noticed is it doesn't matter if you're from the united states, everyone here is becoming a fan very quickly. and simone says she doesn't
5:35 am
she just wants to be the first simone biles. and people love her so much. she was just born with this rare gift. a lot of people saying the best female gymnast ever. >> she says she has always had a ton of energy. but even now, with two gold medals, she is so humble. when people ask her about that unmatched strength. >> i have always had this power, i why had to holster it. i had a lot of energy e tumble and vault. and i don't know, i don't think i have any more powers than anybody else, i guess you just see it. >> okay, she is not sure, but everyone else is sure that she has more power than ebb else. you got to tell them about the story she told you about the male boxers. >> when she was a kid, she would go out in the front yard and clean up on the mailbox and do flips off of her and her
5:36 am
get hurt and yell at her and jump off the mailbox and she would turn around and get back in the house and simone would jump off the mailbox. >> the mailbox is five feet tall and she is 4'8". colorado, meaferg athletes in the next week. and jenny simpson is competing today in rio. >> every single season has its own story. and this story, this year, is different from before. >> it is a story that has jenny simpson on top of the world. she is ranked number one, heading into the biggest sporting event in the world. she runs her first race today. the first round of the 1500. >> a three-time olympian. who wouldn't have even started running if it weren't for her teacher. >> i was an average kid. in an elementary school p. e. class, when a teacher came to me and said you should consider
5:37 am
>> jenny says her family, not necessarily active growing up, so she wouldn't have considered that, and sometimes you need somebody to believe in you, that teacher believed in jenny and look at her today. she lives in colorado right now with her husband. >> and trains at cu boulder. great place to win with her close friend and fellow olympian ema coburn and amazing to watch her when track and field ramp up in a couple of days. >> jenny simpson, know a couple of things. ranked number one in the world. and very distinct possibility th colorado with a medal. secondly please know she is one of nicest people in the world, she is just delightful. so genuine. so cheer her on. >> getting that medal would be music to her ears. so be sure. and there is a colorado resident bringing music to basketball fans in the main olympic park. he is ramping up the music during the basketball games and his name is dj bedz.
5:38 am
as the official dj of the nuggets. >> thousands of sports fans have heard dj bez with the pregame mix for the players and the denver broncos and work that has landed him an olympic gig in rio. his spinning music during the men's basketball. >> it is electric. >> which means playing to a slightly different crowd. >> they just come to and they just go nuts. >> with slightly different musical tastes. >> samba. latin music. portuguese music. >> that guy is so cool. you know, and he's got the coolest name. dj beds. >> and we have come up with our own names with 12 sleepless nights and days working the olympics. i'm dj nappy nap. and this is emcee pillows right
5:39 am
>> kick it. >> kick it. >> emcee pillows. >> ya'll, i got a little research for you here. so when a u.s. athlete wins a gold medal, they get a bonus. they get a $25,000 cash bonus before taxes. but when you compare that to the other countries it is a little bit surprising. the number one paying country for its gold medalist is singapore. $350,000. equivalent in the united states dollars for one gold medal and have won $1.4 million. and indonesia, and then azerbaijan $255,000 for one gold medal. isn't that incredible? >> holy moley. >> that's like the total economic value of azerbaijan. isn't it? >> i don't know. >> something like that. >> something like that. >> yes. >> gross national product. i don't know. >> so thank you, guys. >> dj nappy nap.
5:40 am
lot of naps. let me tell you. they are going, going, going. let's get a check of the forecast. with marty. >> hey folks, working outside for you today. sunshine, dry conditions. you will feel the air. a little drier. a little more crisp. and therefore, it is more stable. so i don't really think we will see many thunderstorms around the immediate metro area. you would have to go south, of town, especially south of castle rock, late this afternoon. to get anything going. over the weekend, small chance for storms. tomorrow. and really tiny chance monday, and if you are looking for a weekend get-away, how about heading up to the north fork of the gunnison, over to hotch kiss, where they're having the farm to field festival today, and tomorrow. and the temperatures in the upper 80s. and pretty nice day, to be at the base of the grand mesa. >> that sounds like fun. >> yes. >> i like that. >> all right. >> all right. so there is a lot of history to be found all around colorado, guys. in 9 neighborhoods this week. we are taking you to downtown

5:44 am
the a-line has struggled with a series of high profile failures since it opened in the spring. rtd's new b line has some issues, too, apparently. service between union station and westchester went down yesterday. -- westminster went down yesterday. due to power issues. leaving passengers to rely on puss. just like the a-line -- buses. just like the a-line. the trains began moving again at 3:00 in the afternoon, just about the time sky 9 flew over to get this shot. hey, guys, we will take you back down going down there. you saw kind of the gray sky around matt and cheryl. it is kind of cloudy and foggy and humidity at 68% and 64 degrees in rio this morning. and for most of the ren views today, one of the -- venues today, one of the cooler day was the week. not anticipating much rain offshore. a few showers forecast offshore. with temperatures in the low 60s and low 70s. not a bad day for the middle of winter for them. and for us, temperatures in the

afternoon for us. that sur workday. headed home from work. i think you will enjoy the evening as temperatures drop off relatively quickly. the air is drier today. so it has a harder time holding on the heat of the day. so the evening is going to cool off. very nicely. if you're out and about this friday night. >> and it is amazing what just 30 minutes and a friday morning drive can do. we are already starting to see is so many more drivers out across the roads. problems though are still on the low side. we are checking out our drive times across 270 and commerce city. and 6 or 7 minu up i-25 with i-76. as well as your commute across i-70. and as for i-25, both directions, across the north end, as well as the central corridor, should be less than 15 minutes. and this is what i'm talking about here. a big difference, between 30 minutes ago and now, i-25, just filled in, with cars traveling northbound, out of the denver tech center. and another quick update, due to the breaking news situation along i-25, up north, near 52, and all lanes are now open, as

5:50 am
and there. and the temperatures will be very comfortable, and if there is a storm, we do anticipate it to be way, way south into the monument hill area, and farther south. and low 80s, and upper 70s, for us here today, and really nice crisp feeling day for us. and after the storms finish up, in southeastern colorado, we will again see them form along the monument hill area and to the south later in the day, getting pretty intense south and east and 80s to near 90 out west. and with 70s in mountain areas. and for us, today, partly cloudy, and a couple of storms, to the south, tonight, and just a beautiful crisp evening for you, with temperatures in the mid-80s, over the weekend, and a slightly better chance for storms, on saturday than on sunday. and then really warm early next week. >> thank you, marty. we have new information,
