account? our politics guy, brandon rittiman will try to explain this. >> the people who campaign to make it legal to buy this bag of marijuana promised millions and they did deliver, but plenty of colorado voters may have expected a little too much out of what is in this bag. don't get me wrong, marijuana is a heavily-taxed product. in fact, if you look closely, the state already made a couple dollars off this 1/8 ounce back before it got to the store. this is the whole sale tax on when marijuana is harvested based on the weight. we will say this is a $30 bag for a round number, lets ring it up and see what we pay. all told, you pay $8.47 in taxes on this baggy, and effective tax rate of 30%, a heavy tax, and it does add up. i am about to make it look very small. in the fiscal year that just
6:01 pm
hauled in $129 million in taxes off recreational marijuana. i know you are thinking it sounds like a ton, until i show you this, $10.3 billion is how much the state collected through all of its general fund taxes in the same year, we are talking income tax, sales tax, a bunch more. you can see that marijuana tax only amounts to 1.3% of the total. if you got a 1.3% raise in your pay tomorrow, it is probably not going to changeou you won't go out and buy a house twice the size, but you might make upgrades and that is what the sate is doing. remember that $2 and change of whole sale tax before we rang it up? it goes to schools, it added up to $40 million on school construction projects last year, not enough to build a bunch of schools, it mostly pays for upgrades in rural districts. we will show you one of those projects tomorrow. as for the sales tax, local governments get a cut of what
6:02 pm
kept $76.5 million in the last year, it up to the legislature to decide how to spend that, they forced marijuana laws and treatment programs and public health spending because marijuana is newly legal. bottom line here, marijuana taxes do bring in a bit of money, it is a syntax, though, like the tax on cigarettes and casinos, it doesn't bring in enough to replace the income tax the s sorry, i am just the messenger. >> if you really wand to nerd out, brandon's piece on 9news.com has this crazy float chart that explains pot taxes in colorado. this is level 2 nerd stuff, do not even attempt this flow chart unless you think you can handle it. clark county sheriff, sheriff wegener is fighting for his job. the family said he led their son

a scholarship, it was really just about being active, having family time, enjoying the outdoors in their small mountain town. from crested butte, colorado, to rio de janeiro, we sat with emma after the race with the bronze medal hanging around her neck. >> growing up there was adventure and athletic activities without even really realizing it. had we would climb 14ers and back pack and do all sorts of colorado sports. i think all of that just played such a role in my athletic development as a kid, that now the fact that i am a runner who also has to jump over things is kind of like, you know, me being a kid jumping in the river or jumping in the lake all over again. we had a family rule, you had to do 3 sports a year, my sister and i did volley ball, cross country, basketball, and track.

my whole high school. we never had try out's, every kid was allowed to compete. i was lucky to get to, you know, be at a school that encouraged kids to do all different sports and have parents who encouraged us to try everything and when i did find the place i belonged, the steeplechase, it felt right in the field like home, but definitely an unexpected way to get there. >> reporter: so running w was a fluke, her high school coach suggested, you ought to try a track meet out of state, go to new mexico, emma thought, i don't know driving 8 hours to run 2 laps and looked at the list, saw something called steeplechase, thought it interesting and 7 years later, the first american woman to ever win a medal in that specific event. >> i was always curious, how in the world does one get into

by chance. thanks so much. bolt is faster than every other man on earth, he won his third gold, crossed in 9.8 seconds, the slowest of his 3 olympic finals, beat american justin still. imagine how nerve-wracking for photographers to capture the images, just flashes by, 10 seconds start to finish. we called up a photographer who had to work fast to capture the fastest >> all about positioning, definitely the most popular event of the olympics and every photographer wants to be at that event. it is a matter of getting there, we have a lot of positions in the stadium, and it is really kind of figuring what angle you want to get on that race and then getting there early enough to stake your claim. here is the deal, i cannot see the race because, the equipment and the score keepers and everything is blocking my view

finish line. so i am actually watching the race on the screen, figuring who is going to win, and then i have to choose which lane i want to focus on because that focus is also very shallow. kind of like the olympics for photographers. >> brian peterson from the minneapolis trib tells us with all the excitement and pressure, the men's 100 is his favorite olympic sport to photograph. part of had show where we point you t ours but is awesome. the new york times has crazy infographic that compares bolt's speed to the fastest men in the world. it puts it into perspective e. 88 lanes, one for each medal awarded in the 100 meter dash in modern olympic, they plot each runner and freeze them where bolt crossed the finish line, you can see he smoked carl lewis

mississippi. these storms, though, are coming off the foothills and do have a little thunder and lightning with them. not holding together terribly well in a day with temperatures in the lower 90s along the front range. these storms moving from the northwest to the southeast are producing a little bit of rain around the area and we will see that chance for rain increasing later in the week, but the big story is in the gulf coast region, texas, louisiana, mississippi, about 19-31 inches of rain over 3 days time. devastating flooding there a increase inland, affecting travel across the south as we move through the week. in our area, cloudy and hazy tonight, isolated storm early and clearing, low 60. tomorrow, the high under 90 degrees. our best chance for rain this week comes in once again on friday with cooler temperatures to boot. temperatures in the upper 70s to next weekend, kyle. it is hillary clinton's campaign relaxing in colorado. last week's nbc pole showing 14
