coburn has a bronze medal. she grew up in crested butte, population 1,500. elevation 9,000 feet. >> it's definitely a big disconnect from growing up in a small ski town to being a medalist in the summer olympics. it's definitely an unexpected way to get there. >> reporter: emma's training partner and close friend jenny simpson trained together at cu boulder has the next sh medal in the 1,500. >> reporter: each year carnival brings millions to the streets of rio dejaneiro and right now teams are designing floats in that carnival. grande rio is one of the best teams in the float competition where clubs are judged to see

he says that opportunity changed his mindset. tomorrow he will go for a medal. firefighters from across elbert county are being called to help in with a fire burning southeast of agate. the fire is east of i-70 where the interstate turns southward between byers and limon. several small departments are coordinating to stop the fire from different directions. it has not damaged any buildings. there are wind turbines in the area. denver police officer john adsit has faced over a dozen surgeries since he was hit and dragged by a driver 20 months ago. he has challenges ahead and he wants to help other officers with theirs. i spoke with 9news reporter victoria sanchez. >> is here are some of the boxes that i received.

boxes from the day of the accident. >> reporter: an almost unsurvivable crash. >> on every corner you can see that it says fatal accident. >> reporter: piece by piece adsit pulls out the uniform he was wearing, evidence of a day he nearly died but no memory of what happened. >> i felt that i was going to die. i didn't know why, but i also knew that i wasn't willing to die without a fight. >> reporter: december 3rd, 2014, adsit an officers escort high school students during a protest when the driver of a black mercedes hit him. his partner saw the whole thing. >> the car slowed down. i slid off the hood. then it dragged me underneath. >> reporter: he suffered a broken pelvis, collapsed artery, collapsed lung, damage to his eye and with 18 surgeries there's more to come. >> i was supposed to lose this

odds he says not by himself but with tremendous support from the community and his family. he knows not all critically injured first responders get the backing or media attention he's received. so he's paying it forward and started a nonprofit so he can help others get through a tough time physically, financially and mentally. >> for me there were many days and many weeks even that i wanted to give up. >> reporter: he goes through the items in the evidence boxes to give him hope that if day return to the denver streets he once patrolled. >> there's still my blood on there. it's just completely decimated. >> reporter: as for the driver who caused this, adsit says he's forgiven him. >> i wouldn't be surprised if someday we just want to chat and talk. >> last year john adsit's

expenses. this year he wants to do it again for other injured first responders. september 17th the adsit strong rise and run will benefit tony lopez, jr., the dpd officer shot multiple times during a traffic stop. >> he hasn't given up on the idea of rejoining the force. >> doctors have not cleared him to go back to work. it's been 20 months. he goes through physical therapy three times a week to get back on that bi county deputy killed in the line of duty are considering suing the county and its sheriff. almost six months ago corporal nate carrigan was shot. >> also part of the intent to sue today another deputy who was very badly hurt, their anger is palpable. the carrigans say their son should never have been sent

in a small town like bailey a loss like this is enormous. >> i told john it wasn't our nate. it was our nate, the whole community. >> reporter: john and melissa carrigan's son park county sheriff's corporal nate carrigan was killed serving a high risk eviction. the subject martin werth was also killed. >> there's different levels of grief and i keep trying to figure out where i am and i go up again. >> reporter: records show werth had prior run-ins -ins with the law. they want to know why if werth was soddening russ, carrigan had no -- was so dangerous, carrigan had no s.w.a.t. team to back him up. friday john and me lisa notified the park county sheriff's office and sheriff fred wegener of their intent to

told deputies to enter werth's home even though werth threatened to harm any individual trying to evict him. they're asking for a settlement of $1 million. they say they've been forced to sue to know the truth. >> there's no healing that can begin. there's a lot of anger. >> reporter: the other deputy who is part of that intent to sue letter is kolby martin. he's asking for ma about 2. knife $5 million. we spoke with the -- $2.5 million. we spoke with the park county sheriff's office today. vandals did $10,000 worth of damage to a school in jefferson county over the

team usa is dominating the medal standings in rio. as of tonight they have a nearly 30 medal lead over china in second place. great britain moved into third. it was a moment of poor sportsmanship that stood in direct contrast to the spirit of the olympics. last week an egyptian athlete refused to shake the hand of his israeli opponent. today the international olympic committee handed down a severe reprimand. the egyptian olympic committee sent that israeli athlete won bronze. an australian who didn't win his competition went off the deep end gastrointestinally speaking. the athlete had been very careful about what he put into his body, but after losing his badminton match threw it all out the window. he made a beeline to mcdonald's and downed six-burghers, six

limon area and burlington and quite the light show in lamar tonight. the big weather story continues in the gulf coast region across the southeast from corpus christi toward houston. this week long flood event is bringing devastating flooding catastrophic scenario with 1 to 3 feet of rain. in the last 12 to 24 hours we've had reports of 3 to 6 inches some of the totals are pretty amazing when you consider you have baton rouge with about 2 1/2 inches of rain on average, brownsfield with 27 inches of rain. you're probably saying those numbers don't mean anything. this is what 31 inches of rain looks like. that is a lot of water right there. that's what they're dealing with in this area after just three days. it's that remarkable. that moisture shield pushing inland and northward.
