we are following some breaking news right now. firefighters in larimer county are trying to contain a 35-acre wildfire. south of carter lake. the berthoud fire crew says there are evacuations off bennett and del rio. we have been looking at a home that the flames are very, very close to. >> we did have a shot of the home. if we could go back to that, of the fire of drop around the home. that stopped the fire line from spreading to that home. the good news is that home did look to be fine. 35 homes in that area do have voluntary evacuations. there is a evacuation center open at the berthoud community center. the good news is that it's 15% contained. we will continue to follow this fire and give you as much information as possible.

by private security guards who hit the streets this afternoon. this follows months of negative news reports that they just don't feel safe at the mall. while denver police has the a authority to ticket and make arrests, the private security will patrol the 9 blocks between arapahoe and broadway. >> isn't this an additional resource? it's an additional set of eyes and ears that can effectively report them. they can address situations that are occurring to inform people whether or not they are breaking the law, when there's not voluntary compliance, they can contact the police as well. >> the license guards are unarmed, but they do carry pepper spray and handcuffs. the downtown denver partnership won't say exactly how many guards will be on duty. it could be from 2 to 15, 24 ?? hours a day. we're learning more about

a carjacking suspect, multiple times while chasing him on foot. the suspect was hit it in the leg. noel brennan spoke with police this afternoon. the officer, has been with dpd for 10 years. >> reporter: police are not quite naming him yet, but say he's a it patrol officer assigned to district 1 in denver. he's on paid leave right now, which is standard procedure, anytime we see an officer involved shooting. this afternoon, denver police walked us through the an undercover cop spotted a volvo that had been taken in a carjacking in arapahoe county on sunday. that officer lost sight of the car, but another officer found it a few minutes ago, parked in the denver community parking lot. police say the officer drew his gun, and ordered the other people to put their hands up. instead, they bailed out of the car. the officer had a gun, the officer chased after him and fired several times, hitting him in the leg.

individual that was in the driver's seat, that was eventual wounded by the officer, then he fired his gun at any time. we have no indication that that happened. no officers were injured in this incident. >> reporter: police say the suspect who was shot is under the age of 18. same goes for the other two suspects later taken into custody yesterday afternoon at the scene. jonathan, police say all three had warrants for their arres. louisiana, but the damage is extensive. the district of columbia, puerto rico, to help. it it is the biggest volunteer group called in since super storm sandy. by the numbers, at least 11 people have died. 30,000 have been rescued. some 40,000 homes damaged. forecasters say the worst of the rain is likely over, but the southern part of the state

2 inches more of rain through friday. more than 82,000 people are out of their homes in southern california because of yet another massive wildfire. this one's being called the bluecut fire. it's burned around 30,000 acres. governor jerry brown has declared a state of emergency in san bernandino county. a significant number of homes have been destroyed. they're just not sure how many yet. dangerous. there is a chance for more rain in the metro area and foothills this evening. i guess we're getting some cooler weather soon, too kathy. >> we are. and the timing is interesting. like last week, the timing is coming through on friday. everybody wants warm, dry weather. while it won't be a rain out, it there is definitely a good chance of rain in the forecast for at least part of the weekend. we'll start with today, as you

the foothills into a relatively stable air. 70s in the foothills at in hour. as the storms move from north to southwest of i-25, a lot of wind, a lot of lightning, but not a lot of rain yet. tropical moisture attempting to move into colorado, but it's really the front to the north of us, that will change our weather picture in 48 hours time. look at the lightning all concentrated right over central and southwestern colorado. other big the gulf coast region. we're going it to talk about the flooding there coming up. in denver, partly sunny skies. a little bit of wind out there, still the potential for a brief shower, or rumble of thunder yet tonight, and a similar forecast shaping up for tomorrow. when we move into friday, with the arrival of that front to the north, we're going to be looking at fall like temperatures, as we head into the weekend. something i want to talk about, kim, the cold front coming in on friday. there is actually the potential

some of the high mountain peaks on saturday morning, when you talk about fall, that looks like a sign to me. what do you think? >> wow. we were ready for just a little chris bear in the morning. >> did she just say snow? >> way, way, way up high. those camps and hiking friday night, saturday morning, go prepared. >> okay, here we go. >> you were warned. thanks kathy. >> before we can tell her. firefighters in larimer county are 35-acre wildfire south of carter lake. this is the home. you can barely see it because of all the smoke in the area. it is a pretty big home. it's an expansive home, and we believe we saw firefighters dropping some retardant, you know, from a helicopter, prior to our newscast beginning, hoping to build a firewall around this home. but as you can see, there are plenty of trees and other things around this area that are catching fire. >> right, and of course this

drop the retardant to save this structure. as they go wider, or sky9 goes wider, you can see the property there. just a lot of smoke in the area, that we do see white smoke, kim, and that is often good news, a good sign. >> they've got natural fire breaks there with the roads. most of these homeowner it is that live in these areas have done some of their own mitigation, because they know in colorado, said, it is year-round fire season in colorado. you cannot say it's one specific time of the year, and we think, oh, we had so much rain this spring, and early summer. >> so even from just a few minutes ago, the fire looks much better at least in this part of this area. so good news there. >> we'll keep tabs on it. scary for everybody who lives in the area, and those folks who are seeing the smoke. a new swing state poll out this afternoon has hillary clinton leading donald trump in

digits, but it looks too close it to call in iowa. the new poll in quinnipiac university has clinton leading trump. 16% said they would vote for libertarian gary johnson if the vote was today. 7% said they would vet for jill stein. just a year ago, our state showed republican strong holds. this afternoon, hillary clinton commented on trump's decision to change up his the campaign announced some big moves this morning. trump hired executive chairman of conservative website, breitbart news. trump and his advisers, old and new, met about what they're calling tactics to fight

fundraising in ohio right now. the legalization of recreational marijuana had many people thinking the revenues and taxes would fix all the financial issues for school districts. we want to continue to show you, however, how it all works. in the last part of our series, byron reed shows us one area hoping to receive funding. >> reporter: when talking about rochester middle school in aurora. principal michelle davis wants to make clear. >> it's been a lot of years since kids who came to marachek had a building that supported their learning leads. >> reporter: it dates back to the 1970s. in those days, the idea was to make the inside of the school open. >> classrooms do not have doors. the wall to the hallway does not go all the way to the ceiling, and is made up of locker bays. >> reporter: doors that are essentially like shower

some some proofing, and a sound barrier between the classes. >> if they hear friends in the hallway, they want to check that out. >> reporter: that's why she supports to help build a new school. the best program is meant to he help address the $18 billion needed to modify schools across the state, but help is the key contributed only $1.5 billion towards school construction, since it started in 2008. >> when you're looking at $18 billion of needs, statewide, that's a huge expense. >> reporter: jennifer oaks is director of finance for the state's department of education. the marijuana tax construction to best has a limit. >> what we're capped at is $40 million a year.

million in new spending. in rio today, a brazilian judge ordered u.s. olympic swimmers ryan lochte, and jimmy fagan to stay in the country while they investigate the armed robbery report, but lochte is already home. lochte's lawyer says lochte gave police the u.s. olympics economy watched lochte sign a statement it to its truthfulness. a senior olympic international producer is awaiting arrest. the spokesman said the allegation centered around 1,000 tickets, associated with the irish international committee.

9news. >> after the students graduate in october, bank works will help them find a job at a bank here in denver. bank of america, u.s. bank have expressed interest. bank works has placed tellers in six other cities already, including those in houston and seattle. as you just saw, there are plenty of thrift stores in colorado it that do good and give back. considering it's national thrift store day, which apparently is a we wanted to hire a store helping folks worldwide. global threat is a store, a huge part of global refuge. a local-nonprofit. the store is run entirely by volunteers. it's in addition to a coffee shop. the profits from both, minus overhead go towards helping those overseas, as well as some

we want to go back now live it to that fire in larimer county. the latest we've seen is that this is really the only flames the firefighters on the ground have appeared to have made headway. >> it looks like there's an outbuilding that's got some smoke coming from it. they may lose that, then, it's hard to tell what is burning here, if this is a vehicle, it may be a vehicle. as we mentioned, there is some brush, and some other areas out here, but of course, you get in your vehicle, or could be it it may actually be wood that has

ground are trying to put out those flames right there. >> firewood is what it looks like to me. >> you can hope at least that is firewood, and not a car, or a structure. perhaps, it may have been some kind of outbuilding in the backyard that may have been lost to this fire. the good news is the big home there, unclear what part of the town this is it in, or what part of the county rather, but appears to be safe, appears to be good. really close. the winds are blowing, but it doesn't look like it's significant in that area right now. and they do have the road, and some other things. but definitely looks like that outfooting and firewood have really caught onto the fire. that's where they're going to try to contain it at this point. >> scary for those homeowners and others in the area that see the smoke and worry about it. it is something that we often take for granted.

program partnered with von miller's von vision. they will be back up again tomorrow from 8:00 until 4:00. when a limb is lost, some patients say a piece of their identity can be lost as well. one company is working to make unique prosthetics that can have personalized designs, similar to the way people get tatoos. the company uses flexible, and ridged materials, can get them in over a dozen different colors and with tatoos. one customer lost her leg and says it has given her a sense of normalcy again. >> she's a great female role model during world war ii. just a symbol, of everything i've been through.

how was it? >> nice. >> just nice? i just came out here a couple of minutes ago and all of a sudden this wind picked up. it is windy, and warm in the backyard, and we've been talking about fires lately, and it just makes me think about the high fire danger around the state. with temperatures so warm and dry this month, and our presip levels so low, just something to think about. we've got rain on the way, and cooler weather on the way. it's maybe not folks in the high country have been enjoying showers all afternoon. the green pastures and the southern mountain spectacular comments of all of that monsoonal moisture. we've had highs around 69 in telluride. 76 in alamosa. almost 90 in denver. 70s in the high country. the average this time of the year, 87. we're right about where we should be for this time of

winds east, southeast at 13, and calming down a little bit in the backyard here outside the studios. but it is a warm wind. i think our temperatures may actually go up here in the next two hours or so. lightning has been amazing in the last 48 hours during the evening hours. the pictures that you all have been sending in, spectacular as well. wind coming in with these storms, something else we're dealing with. but remember, when thunder roars, go indoors. lightning is nearby. we want you to away from windows, electronics, stay out of the bathtub, and wait 30 minutes until the last sound you here, a flash you hear before you go out. something we're talking about in the foothills, that is where the convection is. storms moving west of i-25. into a relative unstable atmosphere. there is a little upperrer level support here across east- central colorado for storms to develop yet tonight.

denver. even though we're relative quiet, i-76, down south for the most part, no severe storms. still tracking that epic flooding. texas, mississippi, louisiana, these are areas that have seen 10 to 40 inches of rain. to the dallas area, all the way into memphis as well, and nashville. really just some amazing numbers coming in with this current weather pattern in the louisiana from the flooding. 11 people killed. 30,000 people rescued from cars a and from homes. federal government declared a major disaster area, and they're still dealing with the 1 to 3 feet of rain in that part of our weather world tonight. the rain shield is continuing to just push in, and northeast. these are areas that may be impacted, travel wise for those of us headed out tomorrow. a little tropical moisture coming back into colorado. enough that a couple of high

but it is this cool front to the north of us, that's going to change our weather picture heading into friday and saturday. the bulls eye for the heavier storms, those are areas along the frontal boundary that may in fact see storming strong enough to impact travel. this cooler air comes in friday, and for the weekend. after highs near 90 today and tomorrow. it it will feel very much like fall around here for a couple of days, and higher peaks on saturday morning with the arrival of that front friday. when you're making those weekend plans, be mindful, there's some cold air coming. not tonight though. it is windy, it is warm. these are producing wind and lightning, and not a lot of heavy rain. a brief, heavy shower is definitely likely. we give you a mostly sunny

>> maybe like magic johnson. supporting a big massive project to redevelop the great hall at dia. >> counselors this afternoon voted to approve a $9 million contract for the project over the next 6 months. magic johnson does have a business interest in the deal, as we said, he is a good businessman. magic johnson enterprising is an equity partner of developers chosen for the job. before today's vote, johnson said he he would help promote for kids the importance of education. >> i want to go and talk to some of your inner city schools here in denver, because a lot of those kids grew up like i did, poor. and i think they should understand how i got to this point, forget the basketball side of it. i'm talk being the education side. and knowing that they can do anything in life through education. >> dia leaders hope to work out

colorado athletes are bringing home a lot of hardware in the past few days. >> which is awesome. guys, the past three days have been good to colorado for sure. >> reporter: oh, so good. we are so fortunate. we have the best athletes. we are absolutely objective on that point. but we have fantastic athletes. sarah hammer one of them, she won a silver in the team pursuit, and won another in cycling. >> team u.s.a. cycling has been focusing on a lot of speed lately. as far as success goes, sarah says, that's just the beginning. ? house that is off parker ridge road. it has burned what appears to be a stack of wood. firefighters are there with hoses and other equipment. size wise, the fire is about 35 acres. there are some evacuations along bennett road, the fire is 50% contained. denver's most popular tourist attraction, the 16th street mall has gotten a lot of negative publicity lately. reports of violence, this incident of a man swinging a pipe at the mall people. denver police officers tripled the number of police officers on the mall. a look at what the guards have authority to do, and whether it will make a difference. ?
