routine now. we know you've noticed a lot more congestion on the roads lately. amelia will have a look at the traffic impact for drivers. we'll start with becky ditchfield in the back yard. it's pretty appropriate that as the school year begins, changes in our weather do, too. >> reporter: we will feel more like fall, that's for sure. outside is still very nice with mostly sunny skies developing across the front range, not too many clouds out there for you. we'll see a chance for some showers and thunderstorms today and will come in ahead of the front as 70 come tomorrow. here's a look across the state, a couple of light showers in northwest colorado ahead of the front. most of the rain for this system is well to our north over the dakotas and montana, where we have severe thunderstorm warnings this morning. showers won't get going here in the city until after 2:00 or 3:00. we'll see them much earlier about 11:00 or so out to our west.

school day forecast? well, at the bus stop this morning, pretty nice, 67 degrees. at recess, have fun playing outside. we'll be in the 80s, a few more clouds out there, rain more possible as you're heading home today. we'll see some more showers and thunderstorm in the area as temperatures in the low 80s so you may want a rain coat just in case. amelia at least it's a fairly decent start for the first day of the school. yeah, really is, becky. we have a pretty good start overall. broadway. freeway and side streets are mostly okay, few minor incidents we'll talk about in a minute. as we come to the maps, we have school traffic and extra volume over the last couple of weeks as school have gone into session, including jeffco today. what we want to think about, besides slowing it down, is a second or third look. it would be nice to have a

school year. in fort collins, clear on college avenue and vine and alameda. a crash is at alameda and holly and near lakewood, kipling and alameda. freeways are doing great so far. the trip to the denver tech center, 15 minutes with no accidents on side streets. tarhonda thomas is live at bear creek k-8 school this morning >> reporter: it is so important and here's one thing that we're not used to all summer long, been cruising through this street at, what, 30 miles per hour, maybe? the sign now says 20 and lights will start flashing. you have to be mindful of the school zones. steve davis with the lakewood police department joins us. >> hey, tarhonda, how are you? >> reporter: doing good. adults will have to learn a

safety. >> yeah, and one of the most important things -- we hear it from neighbors and parents and everything else, speed. we have to be mindful of the speed we're driving in and like you said, we'll have signs flashing pretty quick. there are kids on foot, in crossing in crosswalks -- >> reporter: on bikes. >> reporter >> and sidewalks. yeah, on bikes. >> reporter: if you notice people are speeding, can that person contact police and say, "hey, i would like you to monitor this." >> oh, yeah, we get calls all time and people will be here and be mindful of your speed. it's all of a sudden one day we've got all these kids after three month of nothing going on around the schools and then today, first day of school, we have got 86,000 kids -- >> reporter: wow. >> -- in jefferson county. >> reporter: ? they're back ? let's talk to officer dave

convention center in june. it hit two people inside and he faces dui charges and two counts of careless driving resulting in injury. an avon man who pleaded guilty to causing the death of his infant daughter will spend ten years in prison. a jury sentenced patrick wig yams on wednesday. his daughter paris died from pneumonia. she was underweight, dehydrated, and ffered several infection including e. coli. his fi and is sevenning six years in prison. >> six minutes after 6:00. firefighting home used at peterson air force base likely contaminated drinking water in el paso county. people in security and widefield and fountain switched to bottled water in june. filters and groundwater are being used. now, colorado health said that it is highly like lyceum cameras from firefighting foam got into that water.

climbing in colorado is a whole differ beast. jeremy cadwell found himself stranded while climbing second flatiron. with darkness quickly approaching, heeded back but was stuck and didn't have an easy way to get down. he wanted to call for help but was worried it would cost money so he waited it out until morning and says things weren't all bad. >> it's a good experience in that i'll never forget it. i have kind of a fun at me, i'm an idiot" type of story to tell for the rest of my life but it was quite scary. i literally thought i was going to crap my pants a couple of times. >> that never when we hear it. >> tell it like it is, jeremy. >> oh, he did. >> eventually he called friend who called rocky mountain rescue and they got him. in the end, they did not charge him for that rescue. >> did he do that? do we know? >> don't think so. >> i hope not.

returned to the olympic village from partying. police have found little evidence to support their account so far. lochte is reportedly in the united states and changed up his story just a bit. >> it's really bizarre. i'm sure we will find out more as time goes on. that's a very big story in rio this morning. cheryl and matt decided to tour and get out of the city today. >> that's right. they're at sugarloaf mountain to tour one of brazil's natural wonders. i'm a little jeal >> every morning. that's true. >> reporter: absolutely. 52 greeley,, eastern plain in the 50s and 60s so nice, mild start and a calm start. the only showers are in northeastern colorado and this afternoon, showers will become more widespread. after 2:00 p.m., we could see a couple of those pushing east of i-25. they will be isolated at first and may become scattered into the afternoon and by tonight, it is very possible we could see strong storms in northeast colorado. you could see storm that produce large hail and damaging winds. you're under the marginal risk of severe weather today. a cold front moves through late tonight be. behind that is the cool air so that settles in tomorrow and a big difference from today. today, 87. 88 greeley, 87 fort collins, much hotter on the eastern

welcome back. el chapo could be going back to the prison he was in the maximum security prison in mexico city. guzman is awaiting extradition to the u.s. a former nfl star will learn how long he will spend in prison after pleading guilty or no contest to charges that he drugged and raped nine women in four states. there could be as many as 16 victims. as part of the plea deal, sharper agreed to testify against his co-defendants but could serve anywhere between 15

let's start with rules for drivers when we talk about the cross walk. what's the law? >> behind us is a lighted crosswalk so you have to pay attention. you need to make sure the light is on, working, operating. the driver, if it's not a controlled intersection, be -- the pedestrian always has the right away. if you work off the pretense the pedestrian has the right-of- way, you won't run someone over. >> reporter: as soon as i prepared to stop. >> you should be prepared for somebody to cross. >> children don't always stop at the crosswalk. >> very excited the first day of school. it's not like the last day of school when they run away. today they will run to the school because they're excited to see their feds, excited to get to teachers and new classes. when they hit the crosswalk, stop. >> okay, good advice. >> reporter: wait for the next one. >> reporter: that's true

signatures supporting former state representative kaiser lobby arraigned today. she said she did it to keep her job and faces 34 count of forgery. kaiser didn't win and said he had nothing to do with forged signatures. the driver accused of hitting and killing a father of three while he was riding his bike will be arraigned he -- she hit bill davis and was driving drunk. she was already on probation for drunk driving in march. we know name of the worker killed in an industrial accident at a denver aluminum plant. he died on august 9 at kbp coil corridors. he was caught in a piece of machinery. the investigation is expected to last month. flood waters are receding a bit in southern louisiana, but

apparent now. some 6,000 people stayed in shelters overnight. 13 people have been killed. more than 40,000 homes are damaged. some of the families are finding their homes are unlivable. >> we just remodeled and moved inside so we finally got it decent-looking and then now we have to start all over again with three kids. >> man, you just feel so bad for those people. the secretary of homeland security will look at the damage. he will meet with city leaders in baton rouge and review the response and recovery efforts in the area. >> really disastrous on opposite ends of the spectrum. we know it's a very dangerous combination, dry heat and fires. some families will go home to absolutely nothing. more than 25,000 acres have burned and 35,000 homes are in

good chance to be on top of the podium today. adeline gray is wrestling in the 75 kg and is already a world champ and heavy favorite to take gold. she'll start out facing a colombian wrestler around 7:00 our time. wrestling, swimming, gymnastics, little girls and boys are playing out daydreams in hopes of being like idols. as many as 50 ne joined up at a gym last week, inspired by team usa and veterans like 13-year-old james "j.j." marshall have gold in their eyes while watching the game. >> i want to become a 2020 olympian because i just put what it takes in my gymnastics, and i stay confident and i just push myself because i know i can do it. >> did you see what she just did? >> i'm telling you, you saw her

and practices twice a day, totaling 34 hours week. tiger is now making plans to add even more classes. you can see why they're inspired. >> that's for sure. we love the olympicses and broncos. more broncos football around the corner this weekend. denver will host san francisco at the stadium on sunday night. that's not before the two teams get together to hit each other in practice. they have been working out together and they will for it's meant to be a productive opportunity to practice against someone new. it's gotten pretty real a couple of times. some fights broke out yesterday -- two of them, as a matter of fact. and with three days left before saturday's game, things will get more visible.
