we've seen the effects this week of devastating >> we have seen the effects this week of devastating flooding in louisiana and here in colorado we understand it all too well after our own floods in 2013. as maya rodriguez explains, scientists here in colorado say they have come up with a new forecast model that could make a big difference in how floods are predicted all across the country. >> reporter: the power of water can be found all across the country feeding rivers and streams and sometimes
4:29 pm
path. >> forecast are not always perfect. >> reporter: but they are about to get better when it comes to flooding. david dahl is a scientist at national research of weather in boulder that could change the way we predict floods across the country. >> this is a capability they haven't had until this point in time. >> reporter: the way the national weather service predicts floods now comes from reports along what could ham along smaller waterways as it did in colorado in 2013. >> it was only 15 or 16 stations they were reporting stream flow at across the entire front range area. and that event spread over many counties, and river systems and out onto the plains. what happened, what we saw, was that the forecasters weren't able to keep up with the event.
4:30 pm
modeling doesn't just forecast the measuring stations but takes into account the entire landscape. millions of miles of water ways all across the country. >> this new modeling system because it is attempting to model water across the landscape, not just an original set of locations will allow us to have a more complete picture of where that water is. where it is moving. when it will arrive at certain critical locations. >> reporter: and that is key when it comes to flooding. now, with a new tool that save lives. maya rodriguez, 9news. >> it took scientists more than ten years to develop this new flood forecasting model which they officially started using this week. well, we are starting to cool off a little bit around the metro area. here is is a live look over denver. a little bloomy out there. >> a little ominous looking clouds out there. not looking too awesome on this thursday afternoon. let's check in with chief meteorologist kathy sabine. the reports of lightning and
4:31 pm
the storms are not severe as of yet, but that may be changing 24 hours from now. usually about this point in the summer season, people are hoping for a break from the heat and hoping for some rain. you will see both if that is what you are hoping for. we could certainly do without the flooding rain and the lightning. it is so pretty in the colorado high country. but lightning is something you have to think about tonight and tomorrow. temperatures have been comfortable in places like eagle at 75. denver, 87. that is the average high this time of eastern plains this afternoon. you can see that our record 98, we are nowhere near record territory between now and the middle of next week. sun is setting at almost 8:00 now but you will see little of the sun or the big beautiful moon just past fool tonight. it is the corn moon and the rain moon. humidity values are pretty high. 71 at the airport. there is even showers reported so you may want to call ahead if you have travel plans this evening because these
4:32 pm
lightning. now some rain coming in. our rain forecast modeling, i love maya's story. we are so lucky right up the road here we have some of the best meteorologist minds working in our backyard producing models like this. this is the gfs model predicting rainfall in the next 24 hours which appears to be heaviest south of the city. the storms are tracking from the west to east over the downtown area along a line nonsevere storms. enough to stop traffic. and the lightning is why i'm inside in stead of outside at this hour, you probably should be too. thunder roars, go indoors. lightning is a big player for us in the next 48 hours. i have good news though. in texas, louisiana, mississippi, the flooding scenario is starting to improve. the upper level low is beginning to shift a bit. still pulling in enough gulf moisture that we have more rain in an area that has seen 10 to 40 inches of rain.
4:33 pm
is moving inland and extending out toward dallas and memphis. the areas in purple are where we are expecting the heavier rain totals. some of that tropical moisture feeding back into colorado as well. we have the chance for heavy rain. the big story is the cool air coming with the arrival of the front. it will feel like fall. we are close to 90 this time of year. but this cool air mass along this front will take temperatures down 20 ee next two days and that tropical flow returning and just kind of interacting with that front. so i think tonight and tomorrow, right in this area. right where the front is, is where we will see the severe storms, the hail producing storms and the biggest problem in terms of travel. a look at the cool air to the north of us. some of the models have us in the 60s . i will go 70s for now. a lot of that cool air will moderate as it pushing south. still 1 103 in phoenix.
4:34 pm
be sure. not a lot in the way of severe weather for denver. but look north. you see this little orange blob? that is a nasty little cell going late into the night around fort morgan, cheyenne. we have just the scattered showers moving through. we won't see a lot of clearing but we will get enough that we will see a little bit of sunshine tomorrow before we go mostly cloudy. the wind shift will bring in the storms earlier in the day. so i do want you to be mindful of lightning and thunder. we have high by 2:00 in the afternoon. we get this push of through. heavy rain, even hail, lightning in there. the rockies are playing in town tomorrow night, too. so, weather may definitely be a factor. 40s in the mountains tonight. those of you headed to the high country, those of you leaving tomorrow to get an early jump. we may have snow saturday morning at some of the higher peaks so pack that extra layer. it will be chilly in the mountains come saturday morning.
4:35 pm
lamar. 90 in grand junction. a beautiful day, but the clouds are coming in quicker. 67 in grand lake. really a nice day in larimer county. we have heavy rain up there today. that is a scene that will play out again tomorrow. so in the denver metro area for tonight. showers and thunder early. some clearing but not much. check out the moon if you can. i have no idea why they call it the sturgeon moon. 76 in the afternoon. better chance of rain, better chance of severe weathe bulls eye for the severe weather tomorrow, that is good news for your weekend. the broncos play in town as you know. and i think we do have the chance for a few showers and thunderstorms, but not nearly as widespread as friday and not as strong. so, better chance of an actual comfortable fall like day on saturday then the guys take the field. you will have the game on channel 20. we will all be excited about that game. sundays high at 85. monday, a little warmer. extended temperatures, very

those venues is sugarloaf mountain. one of the most iconic here. just past the sandy beaches of the bay in rio de janeiro, sugarloaf mountain rises. 1,299 feet into the sky. and tour guide domyana likes to say that all of office. >> i think we are blessed to have this place. >> reporter: nearly every day, leading tours to sweeping sights. >> it is nothing like i have seen everywhere else in the world. >> reporter: that draw tourists like athlete sarah true and other people here to see the mountain. >> european and american. >> reporter: it got its name in

4:48 pm
the cable car, there were two men on top watching it. harnessed in. it was like a cable car wash. and they were cleaning it as it was moving up the mountain. >> they drew the short straw on that job today. because this 1,299 feet in the air. it is starting to get real busy. this is one of the busiest landmark attractions around rio. just everyone. and we are early here on a day. and you can see so many people are starting to line up. >> you see in the shoulders. they are signing an autograph wall. everybody signs the wall who comes up to visit. it is neat to see thousands of signatures on the wall. we signed it of course. a little 9news here. one more view. because why not? >> why not? you don't see it every day. you can see everywhere we have been. right down is the iconic beach volleyball venue. there's the today show right there. and then, cheryl, you can see it over there right?

31 bronze medals for the u.s. 32 silver now, and 31 bronze. total of 95 medals. the next closest medical count, great britain. >> as we watch all the coverage from rio, it is hard not to compare these games to those in the past. >> matt pearl with our sister station in atlanta takes a closer look. >> reporter: they put on games in opposise hemispheres but sochi russia and rio de janeiro brazil have a similar tale. hosting the olympics hoping it will pay off. sochi as a location was far from anything. they saw fewer international visitors likely because of the difficulty of getting there. culturally, it felt removed. the olympics landing into a gorgeous backdrop of the mountains and the black sea.
4:51 pm
transportation between venues is also a question mark. traffic subbase. but its metropolitan location brings a more vibrant culture and a more global fan base. sochi did it gtitzy, the arenas sparkled at night. rio has spent billions for sure, but they have also offered a more austere olympics. their venues impress less on the outside, though they still but what will become of them? in sochi, we all wondered if the massing spending would fast go to waste. two years later, leaders are still trying to fill the venues to make it work. in rio, i worry more about the economy. nearly every brazilian i have met fears the government has poured so much money into these games that it will struggle to support its people. and the olympics have done nothing to address the massive inquality between rich and poor. essentially, these games bring
