welcome back. i'm meteorologist kathy sabine in the 9 backyard where it's feeling like fall on this beautiful summer saturday. this little taste of fall is a short lived event. outside we go. so many of you have outdoor plans tonight. the rockies and broncos both taking the fields this evening. beautiful night for outdoor sports. a barbecue, or just maybe a nice glass of wine on the porch. why not. or way up high. check out the views at rocky mountain national park. a spectacular day any where you went or you tonight. the early evening forecast includes temperatures in the mid 70s between now and 7:00 tonight. that's where we find our high temperatures today as well. the average for this time of year is 87. closer to that west of the continental divide. then here in denver and up near fort collins. we will not be looking at record high temperatures as we move through the next week and a half. 75 degrees at dia. winds are calm. humidity at 28%. calm winds and sunshine outside

thunderstorms today, hard to come by. we could use a little more rain for the month of august. running well below average for our monsoon moisture month. and for the year now, because we're coming off such a dry august. we're looking at a deficit of about an inch or so as well. many of you did see half an inch, an inch of rain with the storms yesterday. but not on the official gauge at dia. best chance for showers and storms over the southern mountains. the colorado new mexico line tonight. and to the east of us is where the heavy at in central texas. there's a storm tracking through minneapolis and chicago. the low pressure area associated with that front that rolled through colorado bringing in the 15 to 20-degree cool down. showers will creep toward the four corners area and southern colorado but denver and points northward starting to warm up. it'll be a dry day with lots of sunshine. the cool air following this front off to the east of us as will the coolest temperatures. we'll be back in seasonal territory with highs near 90

of the best in football happened with one notable exception. broncos owner pat boleyn. >> a lot of broncos fans are not happy about it. today, sports a to z, did the hall of fame get it right? the hall of fame nominated a couple people that should be considered to vote on the hall of fame. and they nominated the former mm that right? well, as you said, those two men should be considered for the hall of fame. but we know here in denver, pat boleyn's name came up and as far as i'm concerned, if you talk about pat boleyn and jerry jones, i think pat boleyn deserves to be ahead of jerry jones based on what he has meant to the league. >> i couldn't agree more.
5:35 pm
it's a disappointment the fact that pat boleyn didn't make it. since he's on the team they have the best record in the nfl. they usurped the 49ers as the model franchise. since he's owned the team he was influential in the tv committee. the god father of sunday night. he got fox involved. when it comes to competitiveness. he never let a player go like other programs around here and said gee, i can't afford to pay this guy. and the other thing, i used to run into people who always be bummed when the broncos lost a big game and i would say to them, let me make you feel better, the guy that owns the team, feels worse than you do. so i think they could have done the right thing, pat boleyn's going to make it. but he should have gone in before jerry jones or before paul, who a lot of people feel is the god father of the concussion era. you brought up a couple things. the tv, pat boleyn was instrumental. i look at pat boleyn. i remember when he came into
5:36 pm
turks verses the old guards. they kind of looked at him and thought this guy's coming in trying to take over. but he won, he being pat boleyn won their respect and went on to do things to heighten the league's profile. not only the tv contracts but everything from uniform changes to stadium changes. taking the game across the ocean. always there. and another key thing is i think a lot of peop physical condition right now. his health. >> you know why else they're disappointed? they feel like rightly or wrongly there's a bias when it comes to the hall of fame with the denver broncos. >> yes, this particular -- this latest decision really shows why the denver broncos are passed over time and time again. now it's the owner. things have to change. i would say this to the people as we close it up. if you have a problem, i know a

can you believe it's almost september? we know you've been relisl summer if you're looking at all these vegetables going i've made every zucchini bread, every squash noodle recipe. you don't want to throw them out. we brought in the expert to show us what to do next. and we'll talk about freezing, canning, all wonderful things to do with vegetables. >> the first big one is you know everybody tries to give away their zucchini at some point in the season. when you get the eye roll, you
5:40 pm
a little too late. this one's kind of the perfect size. you'll have a more tender outer skin. and the seeds inside will taste good. if you do pick a big guy like this, there's possibilities of saving it. plus the little small ones. you just grate it up. i didn't bring the grater. you can put them in quart sized bags or however much you think you need. you can even parse out the exact amount for a recipe for zucchini bread. what i like to do, is i put this stuff into into soups, and they don't really notice it. and for kids that don't like green ones, they have gold and zucchini varieties. you can think about that next season. kale is another one. i know it's grows like gang busters. >> i had no idea that you could freeze kale and it'd still be good. >> it takes a little of the acid off of it and holds the vitamin content in. if you pick it, you want to
5:41 pm
vitamin content. and you want to pick in the morning when the water is filling up all the different cavities of the plant itself. so you can rip it like this. get rid of the stem. >> some people put it in. but i don't like the flavor of it. you can do that. or you can chop it up. whatever style you decide you want to do it in. i love this thing. this is a blanching pot. it makes it really easy. because you can do batch upon batch and do lots put it in this guy. submerge it into boiling water. it's only for 30 seconds or less. 30 seconds might be a bit long. so no laundry in between this guys. this is a hands on thing. you have a water bath waiting with ice cubes and water. pull this guy out, put it in the water bath, dump it all out -- i like to put a piece of
5:42 pm
cookie sheet. then you grab a bag, and put it in the freezer and it's got more nutrients in it than store bought kale. because this has probably traveled a week or two to get there. that's going to be better for you in the winter months. >> we have a minute left. we have beautiful tomatoes here. what can you do with these. >> a lot of people like to store their tomatoes. blanching them to get the skins off. quite frankly i don't like the skins. you just give a little cut on my knife's a little dull. you put it into the blanching water again. after you do that. >> a little bit more than 30 seconds. you'll see the skin peel off. once that skin peels off, you put them in the ice water bath. then you can quarter them for freezing again. you just quarter them like this. and if you don't like the seeds, this is a good time to scoop the seeds out. and then you lay them on a cookie sheet and freeze them and put them in a bag.
5:43 pm
freezer space, we don't have freezer space, we moved on to canning. do a lot of research on this before you start. beware ri be, weary of processing times. you want to consult with somebody in your family or a neighbor. plus it's a good community thing. a lot of people love passing on the tradition of canning. i think that's a good way to do it. i'm not going to show how to kanto everything is clean. this is a jar grabber. you don't want to burn your hand. everything needs to stay sterile. this guy can grab it out of the hot boiling water. that would be a rookie move. we're going to talk about this in the next segment. a lot of folks are into canning. this is a great start. don't throw your zucchinis at your neighbor. freeze them for next season. we appreciate it. we'll have more tips online

9news.com. she changed so fast. both dresses fabulous by the way. she's amazing. speaking of amazing. how about this day? so nice. could it be any better fair skies temperatures in the mid 70s. not a lot of wind. no severe weather. it doesn't get much better than that. those of you watching in southern colorado are saying hold on a minute. we have weather down here, some storms are capable of prg northern new mexico. around here, smooth sailing, we have fair skies and light winds tonight. and it'll be a cool and crisp over night period. lots of sunshine tomorrow. a warmer day coming up for you on sunday. along with plenty of sunshine. tonight, a great night for you, temperatures in the low 50s, fair skies, light winds out of the east. winds out of the southwest will get us to 80 by lunch time. almost 90 in the afternoon. i think we'll touch 90 on monday. ahead of what?

championship win over the new england patriots. of course in that game, peyton manning was under center. tonight, trevor simeon makes his first start in his nfl career. >> i think you have to believe in yourself. i think, you know, in this league, you have to -- what i'm trying to say is, as a competitor, it either brings the best out in you or you fall by the wayside. we have a really competitive group across the board. so for me, it was just i'm in a locker room with everyday and getting better each day. because the dream for kids is not to be in the nfl. it's to play in the nfl. no one wants to be on the bench, right? it's interesting. my journey, i've learned a lot about goal setting. i came in. i wanted to get signed by a team. make a team. and then work my way up the depth chart. so you know, each story is a little different. but it's going to be in a

simeon coming up in our pregame show at 6:00 on channel 20. drew and mike will be on that show. you guys join me now live. it will be great to find out sometime soon after tonight who the qb will be. second tonight, simeon gets the start. i would think your starting quarterback on september 8th against the carolina panthers, i would think you would want him starting tonight. because all the other a-listers are starting tonight. and going a quarter and a half. simeon is playing with those guys. not mark sanchez. you think the decision's all ready been made. i don't think the decision's been made. i think tonight matters. but simeon is the leader going into tonight. you want to see how he performs starting the preseason game first i guess. >> what if i told you that i think no matter what happens tonight, unless four interceptions by sanchez, okay, no matter what happens tonight, i think sanchez starts september 8th. just because i think the stage
5:50 pm
simeon. i think he's a future nfl starter but just not september 8th with the smoke and the trophy and the opening night, no way. >> that's a factor. i think they wanted sanchez to start september 8th but he's been the one that's been making the most mistakes during camp. during the preseason. >> he's too risky, huh? >> a little too risky, simeon is a little more cautious. maybe that's what you want in the opener with that defense again going against cam newton. the thing is, the stage hasn everything we've seen so far, he's calm, cool, he hasn't made the mistakes. it's been incredible to watch what he's done so far. and the reason this is an open competition is not because of anything that sanchez has done bad, it's just that simeon has been that good. >> that's a different stage though. i just don't give him september 8th. october 8th, no problem. if it was tennessee, 2:00 in the afternoon, opening the season, then maybe simeon, that's what you're saying. it'll be interesting too. gary kubiak made it clear it's
5:51 pm
it's about what we've seen the entire time during the preseason. and at training camp. and with that, that's why i say simeon has the lead. this whole body of work so far coming into tonight. and tonight can change things. coming into tonight, trevor simeon is leading. >> i'm not sure sanchez is the right decision. i just think that's the one they're going to make. although gary kubiak had the guts to make crazy quarterback decisions last year. and every one of them worked. i it's going to be simeon. we'll talk to you in a few minutes. the other team that plays on this field is actually playing as we speak in the mll championship, the outlaws taking on ohio. they trail right now. the score is 7-3 in the second. across the way, it's also the rockies and cubs take two. that's tonight. last night or should i say late, late, late, late last night, colorado beat the best team in baseball in extra

walk off error. ryan raburn, the hero in this one hit an rbi double and was waved home after the error in the 11th inning. the rockies won the game 7-6. it's their third win in a row. baseball, it's a big story, yes. but the main story is what's happening on this field here. at sports authority field for now, mile high always, the broncos, the 49ers, preseason game number two, once again, the pregame show over on channel 20 will start at 6:00. about seven minutes from now. kickoff in an hour.
