well it was a long afternoon for members of the south metro dive team after a bit of a boating mishap at cherry creek reservoir. a lae while a driver was backing his boat in the water. the tires slid on the ramp and there was nothing the man could do. >> the problem with the ramps there is a three foot clip dropoff. once you slide your trailer goes off and the truck went off and then the next thing i know it's like quick, get out. >> the man and his 7-year-old

truck. they called a tow truck but the tires dug down in the mud and that is when the dive teams assisted. they placed several air bags that inflated them. it was finally pull out of the water. >> one person killed outside after strip club in denver. it happened near hamden and golinning a. they found a man dead in the parking lot. police have not said being struck by lightning camping northwest of fort collins. the coroner says the man was outside between two trees when lightning hit. colorado ranks 3rd in lightning deaths annually behind florida and texas. cooler temperatures and much-needed rain this weekend. but the temperatures are headed back in the 90s.

to bring in danielle with the forecast. the sunset has been nice. >> spectacular. temperatures warmer and about 15 degrees warmer than yesterday. nice to have all of that bright blue sky and plenty of sunshine as well. take a gander at this one over the downtown denver skyline. it looks fantastic winding down. about 88 degrees here in denver. 90s in greeley and sterling and cooler in the mountains. about 69 in ledville with low 90s in grand junction and 70s to the so the humidity has been so dry. anywhere between 10 and 15% percent around the denver metro and northwest colorado and into wyoming where we are looking at the red-flag warning continues for folks until 8:00 tonight. it is still dry for most of the state. we are watching a couple of light showers and thunderstorms pushing in across southwest colorado from telluride to durango and even to the south of alamosa.

asked to pay for the damage. the drama and excitement is over. in two hours we will have the closing ceremonies for the 2016 summer olympics. whitney wild has more on what defines the games and the athletes that have the most medals of all time. with every medal defining moments hang in history. some of pure joy. others of devastating heart break. so far the united states has dominated the medal count and the modern games started back in 1896. according to a wikipedia analysis of all time winningest teams the united states ranked number one with 2681 medals and

clarinet or cello for the strum drive. the idea is an old strum can be made new again and help schools with struggling programs and boy did you respond. teachers from 39 schools across colorado came to denver this weekend to pick up, get this, 500 donated instruments. they were cleaned and refurbished for students that could sure use them. >> this is kind of our christmas. we have done all collecting the donated instruments and getting them cleaned and repaired and assigned to schools and today is the day that teachers get to collect the instruments. and very merry christmas. many of the schools receiving instruments from smaller communities with tighter budgets and some say it supplies the program and thanks to you so much for helping. that's fantastic.

passengers in the back don't buckle up and that is more than front seats. young people are the worse offenders. >> people may think it is okay to be unbelted or skip the belt all together if it is a short trip but it is wrong. >> most fatal car crashes occur to within 25 miles at home and being unbuckled increases your risk of dying in a crash to 3 times what it would have been as you had your seat belt on. that's according to the governor's highway sa passengers in the back pose a danger to people buckled in front. unbuckled passengers in the back can be thrown forward with tremendous force that they can injure or kill the people in the front. >> suzanne started cruise state dot org to educate kids not to do what tyler did, skip the seat belts. >> these four kids that were good kids and graduated from high school and in an instant

we will be watching the blue skies in northern colorado and out in boulder for now and a couple of clouds starting to drift in and you will be watching in fort collins what we have going on. it looks pretty nice. sunshine and the heat has been on, too. today, make it 48. 48 days in the 90s here in downtown denver. we got 90 degrees at dia and warmer in greeley and south of lamar. in rifle. at the airport cooling off and watching a few more clouds drifting in from the southwest. the winds have not been that bad out of the southeast at 11 miles per hour and it has been dry. 13%. here in the 9 backyard watching the temperatures at 87 and it feels good and you will be watching some of the showers and storms that are still feeding in from southwest. really affecting southwest colorado and telluride and all the way towards alamosa and

and drifting in and i don't anticipate the storms to make it there, make their way to the denver metro and still you will be watching for gustier winds and temperatures in the 50s tonight and 60s in lamar and springfield and 40s in the mountain. this front will start to move. across the country for us. we have been enjoying high pressure but that will drift a bit he making way for the next storm system that rolls from the pacific northwest. that cold front will be in the backyard by tuesday and wednesday and that should knock the temperatures down. rest of the night watching the clouds coming and going. by 11:00 p.m. most of the showers done and by tomorrow morning you will wake up and there's the sunshine we are used to. eastern colorado looking good as well and already another disturbance pushing in from the southwest and will you notice the clouds and the showers

lake city and durango and the san juans and eventually some try to materialize around the metro. i think if you live on the south side you will have the best shot of seeing these and it will be gusty wind and watching the clouds drifting in and that will be it. not a ton of moisture which is something we certainly could use. of course we are talking about the back to school forecast for students and watching for a hot one. temperatures cool at the bus stop and popping out of the upper 50s and so heading home, that will be in the backpack. 90s, low 90s for across eastern colorado and how about 95 in sterling and in the 70s in grand lake and aspen and 62 as we are watching the moisture from the southwest. foot hills in the 70s and it should be a dry day and in the morning isolated showers and it is hot here on the plains and the 90s continue up and down the i-25 corridor and we will

all of the medals have been handed out and no surprise the u.s. finished with the most medals. we picked up a few more including the gold for men's basketball. the u.s. finished with a total of how many medals 121. a good amount. the summer games brought more

a funeral service in turkey where fifty people were killed last night and dozens wounded. turkey's president blames isis for the bombing. believed to have been carried out by a suicide bomber but unclear why the wedding was targeted. >> hundreds gathered in istanbul to protest. demonstrators voiced anger and frustration over the killings.

year. the brother of a wounded syrian boy that gained international attention died three days after an air raid on the city of eltro. he died from injuries. we might not have heard about it if it were not for his 5- year-old brother. it shows him being rescued from a partially destroyed apartment building. he was treated and discharged. since rebels invaded last month. the search is on for a man accused of kidnapping a pizza delivery driver by luring her to an abandoned building. the man was armed with a rifle and forced the victim into the trunk of her car while on interstate ten the victim removed the emergency handle and jump out. police found the burned vehicle belo to go to victim but have not located the suspect.

contempt charges against sheriff joe arpaio. the judge says arpaio ignored orders to racially profile latino drivers. it is up to loretta lynch to decide if the case grows forward. it came out of a 9-year-old case against arpaio. the judge found him profiling latinos in traffic ordered a series of changes. several months ago arpaio was found in contempt despite criminal charges the attorney says he is still running for re- election. >> he didn't do it and he would like to see the case go away and he is not going to resign or step down. he will go forward with his election plans.

the republican primary is later this month. a new homeowner found the unexpected when she dug through an old duffel bag in her backyard shed. they were dozens of letters from a world war ii soldier. samantha found the bag full of those letters cleaning the shed at the home she recently purchased in central texas. 30 to 40 letters inside that old duffel bag and some to his mom. handwritten and after 20-year-old ova sims. >> it is amazing that somebody this young to be 20 had to go through that much and in his life at such an early age. i am thankful for him. he was definitely loved by his family. they saved all of these letters and they meant something. precious memories. sims was killed in act. she has connected with the

i miss her every day. i thought i would never cross paths with someone so desperate to put a needle in their arm. i was in a bubble. private security is working the 16th street mall. for months the city is dealing with complaints about problems in the mall. your reaction, the security officers will be powerless to act. they should at least be equipped with body cams to record any instruments that they witfo others think it is a good first step. do nothing and the people with money will eventually find safer and better places to spend money. and then businesses will close. the olympics being about more than just the way we perform. >> success for colorado athletes and outstanding athletic performances continue with the oh olympics. one moment will be remembered.

to hold pilot licenses. what a great story. we want to switch gears and bring in danielle. a beautiful weekend for the sporting events. the rockies game, i think it is going on and it has been beautiful. >> it has. nice sunshine. >> and cool. >> yes. finally starting to cool off on little bit after 90-degree day. the thing is that we need rain around here. we saw some yesterday but not enough at the airport where we keep score. so far for the entire month we have we need more. where we should be over an inch. as far as august we are in the top five for driest and tied for 2nd place. it has been so bone dry and it looks like we will have a good shot as the dome of pressure skirts to the east making way for the storm system in canada ushering cooler air and a good round of rain tuesday and wednesday. crossing our fingers for that and that will be about it.

a little bit more isolated here, there and not everyone is going to get soaked but we will feel the cool off wednesday and lingering to thursday. the temperatures start to take off just a bit more as we head towards next week end. we will return to the 80s and sunshine. enjoying this nice dip while we have it because summer is still hanging on tight. it will look good as we enter into september that will be here soon. >> it is nice and great to feel the cooler temperatures an nice to have summer here because once it gets cold it will be cold. >> for a long time. >> i like to say mildly cold.
