pay a debt. >> suing the police over speed traps where drivers are fighting back and why. >> good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us. a story developing right now. a driver tried to get away, after slamming into some people in a cross walk. this happened in aurora. one of those pedestrians has died. aurora police say the crash happened on east ileff avenue and south chambers road just after midnight. they say the driver of a four- runner lost control, slid into the walkers, one person was the 4runner rolled over in a parking lot but landed on its wheels. the driver and a passenger were both taken to the hospital with minor injuries. police think speed, and alcohol were both factors in that accident. all right, good morning, we are tracking a traffic alert that could mean some slowdowns for your morning commute. amelia is in the traffic center and the crash happened at south buckley road. >> it did, corey and the

another couple hours. the closure across buckley. and here out further to the east, the south essentially of i-225, and buckley and crest line avenue. now crews are on the scene, investigating this crash right now. and an alternate around it could be chambers, tower and smoking hill and it makes a big square around where the crash sits and the investigation continues. up to the north, heading through loveland, 200 gallons of gas were spilled, southbound wilson remains shut down between eisenhower and eighth street. so plan on delays of your morning drive. the rest of us out and about today, travel times are not an issue whatsoever. we have great speeds here, across i-25 near the bridges and overall, it looks like a nice easy dry monday start. >> we will head out to the backyard with a check of the forecast with marty. >> thanks, appeala. checking out the waning moon here. it is really a gorgeous morning here. very dark still. we get that later and later sunset here, as we move into the latter half of august. plenty mild. nice day to get out and about.

for you, with thunderstorms of course earlier in the week. and they will be fewer and farther between, around here. and the monsoon is really focusing more on the eastern u.s., today, and high pressure out west, it is limiting the amount of moisture we have. so we are not seeing many showers right now. here or to our south. we will see a few showers mainly in the foothills. and central colorado and the southwest later in the day. if you are headed out to a long day outside of work, and temperatures are in the upper 80s to near 90 today. and you will from the intense sun. late this afternoon. over the course of this month, it has been extremely dry, especially at d.i.a., which happens to be our official rain measurement site. everyone else has gotten more than d.i.a. but it is not been a wet august by any stretch of the imagination which has most of the front range in abnormally dry conditions. and a little bit hard to see there, but from denver up to fort colins, we actually have a

welcome our parents back. and we are seeing tremendous growth at denver public schools. this spring, we graduated our largest graduating class ever. it is the biggest increase in graduates ever. over 500 more graduates and in terms of enrollment, we are the country. as er students and parents want to be a part of this school district but it also for you too, too, trying to make sure that students get the education that they need. tell us about your new initiative focusing on the whole student. >> it is really a recognition that our kids need support, not just in academic, but also in growing socially, and emotionally, and their physical health, and the mental health and it is a real effort to make sure we are devoting the resources and the individualized attention for our students to make sure they get those social emotional support, and also have

develop their creative opportunities, and in sports, to grow, and feel that experience of team work, and so a real focus, yes, as for the academic growth and reading and wrighting and math, but also on the growth as whole children. >> sounds wonderful, tom. we will talk about how to implement that in a second, and also, corey, we are going to talk about in the next segment, talking about car pool etiquette and how that can get a little tricky sometime, right? >> it does. >> we will go over next time, but it is an exciting day for everyone. >> exciting and i think the parents are maybe more excited than the kids going back to school. >> freedom, yes. >> thank you. today police will take a closer look at the evidence from a shooting outside a denver strip club. one man died early sunday morning at the hampton and galena area. and police found him dead in the parking lot. no arrests have been made. but investigators say they are now working to figure out a connection, if any, between the victim and the suspect. police in aurora are

old man today. and it is walter rogers. nobody has seen him since august 14. he was reported missing sunday. he has a history of stroke and possibly dementia. the people looking for rogers think that he walked away from the 7100 block of south ukraine street. he was wearing a brown cap, blue jeans, and black or gray shoes. anyone with any information should call the police. a he was hit by lightning near fort colins. the larimer county coroner says chad clover was camping and a severe thunderstorm was moving in and outside between two trees when the lightning strike. colorado ranks third between florida and texas. air bags were not needed in an air bag but needed underneath it to rescue a truck

reservoir. central dive worked the afternoon taking out the trug. this is after the rig slid on moss at the boat ramp and the driver says it was so slippery when he was putting his boat in, there s could do while trying to back the boat into the water, just flopped in. and they had to raise it up with the air bags. if you were planning a trip to the top of the incline you have missed your chance this summer. it closed early for repairs close today. the mile long stairway for 2,000 feet is a popular exercise spot and it will be closed until december 1. >> oh, darn. >> shucks. i missed that one. >> oh, golly. and temperatures in the upper 80s. and late this afternoon, when school is getting out with. partly cloudy conditions, and low 90s, the first few days of school, they will be relatively dry. and the chance for showers on wednesday and thursday, they are small, small, small. you know it is is hard in the afternoon, when it is so warm, you get in the classroom after lunch, and it is a little sleepy. >> yes. >> a little sleepy. >> yes. >> i understand that. trust me. it is 5:38 and pills in a bottle found in prince's paisley park residence in minneapolis have tested positive for the pain killer fentanyl. according to the autopsy reports, the famous singer died of a fentanyl overdose. the associated press is reporting the bottle label said the pills contain acetaminophen and hydrocodone. but at least one of the pills tested positive for fentanyl. the minneapolis star tribune reports prince weighed 112

system was enough to kill someone of any size. investigators say prince did not have a prescription for nent fill. and they say he -- fentanyl and they say he might not have even known that those pills had fentanyl in them. rescue crews had to work fast in florida to save a mother and son dangling from a bridge. the whole rescue was caught on a nearby camera. the car went off the road and into the grassy median before hopping the concrete barrier. the car got about 20 feet over another roadway. the 27-year-old woman was driving with her 6-year-old son inside. and luckily firefighters got them out with only minor injuries. the mother has been charged with careless driving. thousands of people in colorado might need some insurance -- might need to do insurance company hunting in the future. we will tell you why a couple of major providers are scaling back next year. >> and saying goodbye to rio. matt and cheryl have the best moments from the summer olympics before they head home for a long nap.

sunshine throughout the day today. and i do believe it will stay dry. and mild throughout the afternoon. with reaching pretty close to 90 degrees in fort colins today. here, locally, up and down the front range, the clouds will build this evening. a few breezes in store for you, it will help cool us down toward sunset tonight. but as far as rain goes, gosh, it was just not going to be much moving off the foothills. some foothills communities, especially along the peak to peak hi or a little bit better than that. but not very much down here along i-25. hitting the roads already before 6:00 this morning ark pretty view across the drive and i-25 at 58th and hov lanes are looking great and the through lanes are zipping on by. and southbounders, the average speeds are now upper 50s and lower 60s, coming in from the north side, near fort colins and driving further to the north near highway 7, looking wonderful right now, linking up

not developed as expected or hoped under the affordable care act. some large national insurance companies for instance are affording larger losses than anticipated. they say fewer people bought the plans than expected so far. and the people who did are sicker than predicted. as a result, companies like united health care, humanna, and aetna, are concerning abandoning markets across the country next year. tens of thousands of people in colorado may have to find new insurance companies companies do leave the market. best buy is turning 50 today. the electronic store is celebrating a big mile sto?el stone with lots of deal -- store with lots of deals closing out a a hour sale over the weekend. but not all great news for the retailer. the last quarterly earnings result was not expected to be very good, for later this month. but best buy is holding up well compared to similar stories but it is not clear if the company

>> hey, guys, we are seeing some thunderstorms over the east. and of course, the csu start that we are going to be having here with classes starting at cu and csu. and thunderstorms in the midwest and the gulf coast, because of the monsoon moving there. and we just have some light moisture here, in colorado, which is really going to favor areas from summit county to the south and west, and later in the afternoon. and we will see a buildup and foothills this afternoon. they are going to have an extremely difficult time making it off the foothills. we will get clouds. we will get some cool breezes, during the evening tonight but as far as rain goes, it mostly stays at high terrain. the temperatures for us today, upper 80s, low 90s. and it will be a pleasant evening after an extremely warm day. thunderstorms today, start in southwestern colorado, and san juans, surrounding valleys, good storms, and then they roll

the day. that's where we will see the best rain statewide today. and with some folks getting between a quarter and a half of an inch on several -- in several locations, from summit county, to the west, and cooler mountains and west, with warm conditions around here. and 91, partly cloudy, and i am going to keep most of the storms in the foothills. during the day today. and tonight, clearing out. and mid-50s for overnight lows and mostly mountain action again on the storms. and then showers move in here, for the however, they are going to be very light. and not a lot of rain anticipated, as the cool weather moves in, starting wednesday. at 5:52, hitting the streets and looking out to an easy beginning out to the east side and i-70 at airport boulevard and checking clear out of the d.i.a. boulevard and pena and hexed 470. and pretty easy at all, heading further to the east across the plains and a clear connection to the kansas state line. and back across the pena

small town speed traps happen everywhere but some drivers in missouri say it is not right and plan to take the police to court over. it a new class action lawsuit accused 13 st. louis area towns of working together to get more money, squeezing money out of poor and minority drivers, by finding, arresting and jailing them. >> these traffic stops have cost me a lot also have cost me, you know, career jobs. no one is arguing that there shouldn't be any punishment for these things. but what we can't do is hold people in jail because they're too poor to pay a debt. >> last year, alone, the lawsuit claims the towns were so aggressive, they averaged one arrest warrant for every adult and drivers were given fines to high to pay and jailed when they couldn't make good on the debt and they are taking in
