police in denver are currently searching for a suspect who rammed a police car and then just took off this morning. this happened during a stop, a regular routine stop in northeast denver. this is video from sky 9 of a black pick-up truck that

denver police say the suspect then got out of that truck and stole another truck, and drove away. that happened in the 2100 block of south holly. here is a look at the truck that was stolen. thanks to surveillance video from a nearby liquor store. police are looking for that 1998 white ford f-250, extended cab, with black flames. so it is probably pretty recognizable. and it also has montana plates. b4813. again, not colorado license plates. montana. on the white big pick-up truck that has black flames on it. judy bernall says she was nearby when police arrived. >> the building, the businesses are closed today because it is monday and it is always really quiet here on mondays so to have this going on is like wow. inside, once we saw the police cars come up, everybody inside was like oh, my gosh, what is happening? >> watch for updates on this story on www.9news.com and our

now, to the latest on ryan lochte. he is learning over and over why it is so important to always tell the truth. speedo has announced it is dropping its sponsorship of the 12-time medalist. he has apologized online and said he overexaggerated the story that came out this time last week, when he, he and some other u.s. swimmers were robbed at gunpoint in rio. rio police say security guards at a gas station pulled guns on the group after the swimmers vandalized a bathroom at gas station. speedo today said it has enjoyed the winning relationship it had with ryan, over a decade, but that it cannot condone the behavior, which is counter to the company's brand. speedo is now saying it is donating $50,000 from lochte's sponsorship fee to the global charity save the children, for the children of brazil. all right, becky is joining us now to give us the latest on the weather. now about an hour ago, there weren't that many clouds out there.

developing out to the west over the mountains. and we just saw a picture of sky 9 and showing some rain shafts trying to develop over the mountains as well. it is a little too dry here in denver to get any of the showers going here. so our chances for rain are very small. but we will see the clouds from all that rain that is out to our west. there, you see them, up over fort collins, and partly to mostly cloudy skies right now over to us to the north, and 82 degrees. and 77 in greeley. and bloomfld and d.i.a., up to 87. so even with the cloud, it is still very warm. very light rain is showing up off to the west and barely picking it up over the continental divide, and a couple of lightning strikes in southwest colorado, and that's where most of our rain begins to form, and then it works its way steadily to the north. and these showers are not expected to be severe. we have a risk for general thunderstorms out there this afternoon and most of it, again, off to the west. enjoy the clouds, because they

upper 80s, and low 90s today. and another hot day is to come tomorrow, before we cool off again, on wednesday. and so it is feeling like summer for more than 90,000 denver students who had great weather this morning, as they start school today. >> that's right. dps is back in session, and this year, the school district has seen the biggest number of enrollments it has ever seen. and dps officials were at the kepner middle school this morning saying hi to the students and parents. dps is the fastest-growing school district in and with the new year comes the new focus for school officials. this year, they are all about helping students balance all aspects of life. inned to academic -- in addition to academics, officials want parents and teachers to pay attention to the physical and mental and social well-being of a child. >> their focus is truly on supporting the whole child. wrapping our kids in their potential, their talent, and their possibilities, and also e

>> and we want to see pictures of the first day. so many of you have sent in adorable pictures of your children heading off to school and keep the pictures coming. we know you want to show them off and put them on the facebook paik and on twitter, and -- page and on twitter and use the hashtag #be on 9. cu boulder students will be going to school today and safer this year thanks to $2 million worth of new streetlighting in the universal hill neighborhood. we shot the video earlier this morning to show you how dark it can get out there. intersection lights that light up a spharl portion of the street but -- small portion of street but by the end of the week, it will be much brighter. the lights will be placed on certain blocks between university hill, downtown, and the commercial areas, and students work with the city to figure out the best areas for these new lights. the city is placing them below the heavy tree cover on this specific street so students will have a clear path during

walking here, at night, and i mean it was pretty dark here, last year, i remember. and i think these lights would like increase, like safety. and like the feel for safety. >> the $2 million for this project comes from you, the taxpayer. in 2014, voters approved a community culture and safety tax. it is a temporary three-year sales tax increase of 0.3 cents. it is a deadly crash that stopped traffic, victim's jeep exploded in a ball of flames in denver. the man who caused the crash was recently sentenced to 24 years, in prison. by his own admission, ry cardio gardia was smoking marijuana when he sped through a light hitting sebastian who died. there are newly released pictures of the crash showing what happened. look at this. we will bring the story later to you today on the networks of

that has burned some homes west of spokane washington doubled in size overnight. as it raged uncontained. crews say the fire in lincoln county has already scorched more than 15 square miles. people in the community of wellton have been told to evacuate. that town also has lost power, which makes the battle by firefighters even more difficult. and there are two other wildfires burning in the spokane region. also causing evacuations. and also destroying an unknown number of buildings. in texas, a federal judge has temporarily blocked an obama administration directive. on bathroom rights for transgender students in u.s. public schools. this judge in fort worth issued the preliminary injunction yesterday. texas and 12 other states asked the judge to step in, after the federal government told u.s. public schools in may that transgender students must be allowed to use bathrooms in locker rooms consistent with

it is sometimes, it is what we don't see that is the scariest. like this, when a 15-foot snake skin was just discovered in a park. no sign of the snake. so it is somewhere out there. don't worry, don't worry, it is not in colorado. still, ugh. also, we will talk more about the weather and how the clouds are moving in. and maybe it won't get as hot as we were thinking. becky will let us know.

we have partly cloudy skies out here in the 9 backyard. really nice but warming up very quickly.

temperatures return to the forecast. take a look outside. where clouds are also building here along the front range. that will keep us from heating up too much out there today. but already, 87 degrees, out at d.i.a. and places like greeley, at 79. and 80 in fort collins. we have middle and upper 80s on the eastern plains. with 60s and 70s in the mountains. here outside, 9 news, with our sunshine, the temperature is at 82. so we have warmed up decently here. but you're noticing the clouds and all of that is associated with these light showers that we are seeing out to the west. from the red feather lakes down into estes park, we have some light to moderate rain falling. no lightning out of those storms just yet. also some spotty shower activity continues from yampa down to eagle where we have had the thunderstorms in southwest colorado, and that's where most of our storms will really develop and push north through the day. the monsoon flow, well off to the east and southeast. we barely have enough moisture

have enough along and east of i- 25, to see a significant chance for rain here. any storms that do develop, not expected to be severe. just a risk for general storms out there this afternoon. and there you can see by 3:00, today, they are scattered through our central and southern mountains, and for the most part, stay there. and we will see clouds here in denver, maybe a small chance, one, maybe two of those showers, east of i-25 but most of the rain stays off to the west, with the thunderstorms, with isolated storms in southeast colorado through tonight as well. and once we get into tomorrow, cold front starts to push in, closer to the states. this is going to increase our rain chances and it is going to bring with it some cooler air. it just takes long enough to arrive on tuesday. that tuesday forecast may be a pretty warm day. 91 for denver today. and 91 for greeley. and fort colin, lower to middle 90s the highs on the eastern

in the mountains. winds breezy from time to time out of the southeast. heading into tonight, lows drop to 57. clearing sky, and then 86 tomorrow. again, with a chance for some showers and storms mainly in the foothills and drop into the 70s behind that front. so wednesday, thursday, and friday, with a better chance for rain.

experts say pediatricians

medications to treat opioid addiction in teenagers and young adults. opioid addiction has more than doubled in the last years, and that's why the american pediatric academy is recommending doctors treat those with medications that help build long term sobriety. less than half of the counties in the u.s. right now have a primary care doctor who prescribe these drugs and even fewer pediatricians them. how would you like to see this as you walked along a trail in a park? what you are looking at is a 10 to 15-foot snake skin. so you know what that means. the snake itself is out there. slithering around somewhere. don't worry, not colorado. in westbrook, maine. and police say until this type of snake is determined, they caution people who recreate around the river to maintain alert and maintain a safe distance from any wildlife and

snake. investigators are looking at the skin to figure out exactly what kind of snake it is. and if there is a risk to the public. the people at the local museum there are highly interested in looking at those scales. and then, this story, which is kind of really disappointing to me. sad prank at a high school. it is in australia. staff administrators arrived to find salt water crocodiles inside the admin building. security footage shows four suspects pushing crocodiles through the window. the crocodiles' mouths were taped shut and then they were undertphaourbd when rangers re -- undernourished when rangers rescued them. police are looking for the suspects. no word whether or not they are students. so lame. coming up on 9 news at

not buckling up can really put everyone in a car in danger. here is 9 news reporter tarhonda thomas. >> reporter: 19-year-old tyler elsey and his best friend harrison were just going for a short ride. they were in the backseat, no seatbelts on when the driver lost control and crashed. all were killed. it is a scene that is difficult for his mother to relive. >> tyler and harrison basically became projectiles. their heads hit each fractures. not wearing a seatbelt can make you a lethal weapon. >> it is estimated a quarter to a third don't buckle up in the backseat. many more than front seat offenders. many in the backseat think it is okay to be unbelted in the backseat. that is wrong. >> most fatal car crashes occur within 25 miles of home and being unbuckled in the backseat increases your risk of dying in a crash to three times it would have been had you had your

safety association and unbuckled passengers in the backseat also pose a danger to people buckled up in the front. >> unbelted passengers in the back can be flung forward in a crash with such tremendous force they can jury or kill the people in the front. >> and there is cruise safe .com, a web site, to educate kids not to do what tyler and his kid disall the time. skip the seatbelts. >> these four kids who were all really good kids, just graduated from high school, and in an int, gone. >> on the consumer beat, tarhonda thomas, 9 news. >> such a sad story. >> there is one estimate that says not using seatbelts has led to $10 billion in medical costs and lost productivity from accidents and you hear the woman's story and then you think about the poor teenagers, it is worse. coming up next, here here on 9 news, at noon, breaking

last 20 years. i moved here not knowing a soul. and when i came to 9 news, you all welcomed me so quickly. i could tell. and over these years, you have been there with me and been my friend and i have loved every minute of it. being on the morning show was awesome. they were a family. we had so much fun together. and in the last two years, here at 9 news for me was really icing on the cake. for so long, you all knew me but i didn't get to go out and meet all of you. and i have done so plane amazing stories and met great people. and i cherished those last few years. for those of you overcoming great challenges with a positive attitude, you inspire me. and for the other people i have met who are working on great innovative programs to better the lives of every day people here, your determination wows me. and for those in the medical community,dy a lot of medical stories -- i did a lost medical stories and you're coming up with technology and treatment that are saving lives and improving lives, your
