slightly. backed farther to the west. it does include parts of colorado today. and that has fueled a few thunderstorms here in the region. and especially in kansas, nebraska, and then over into eastern wyoming and the northern section of the nebraska panhandle. with recent rain, fire danger has slacked, just a little bit. moderate to low. across the state right now. and it gets progressively higher from utah to the west. and a dry start. a stormy finish. and fr out today, through dinnertime, thunderstorms are possible, in the area, remember, if you hear thunder, you want to head on inside, with some local downpours, and with some brief rain, with a quarter to three quarters of an inch of rain possible. temperatures below average in the 70s. and appeal yakker the highs will -- amelia, the highs will be reached before 2:00 this afternoon. >> sounds good. a nice cool day ahead. 5:31, a perfect start

colorado springs drive and start out with the i-25 cam and wolfensburger cam. castle pines, colorado springs, castle rock, nice and clear, with speeds in the 60s. and c-460, 10 to 12 minutes between 25 and santa fe. 225 drive time, 10 minutes northbound and southbound. absolutely still in the green. metro wide, freeways are in the clear. we've got a great start between downtown and the tech center. side streets around the city one crash really just to the east of downtown. but in a pretty residential spot. 13th and jackson. overall, corey, for a thursday, it is looking really, really nice. >> not too many issues. nice way to start the day, amelia, thank you. rescue crews are still searching for survivors in italy today, and buried in all of this rubble. these aerial views of the damage show old homes and buildings flattened in. so most scenic parts of the country.

injured. this drone video shows rescue efforts continuing late into the night. and the area around armatrice was hardest hit northeast of rome. people there say there is nothing left. >> it is like a town fell down there. is nothing there. >> what is the hope of survivors? >> very, very light. >> the 6.2 magnitude earthquake morning. italy's prime minister promises to rebuild. the damage is estimated at about $11 billion. of course that is early estimates. and the town was once named one of italy's most beautiful cities and this morning, one of the most striking views of the impact on the area when you compare the same exact spot before and after. the new york times compiled this list of photos and it really gives you a good idea of the devastation. i will scroll down.

earthquake hit. a before picture of one of the streets and if you scroll down the exact same shot from the same angle with all of the devastation. it just continues on. you can see the clock tower in the distance and then here, that is kind of all that is left standing, as they continue to try to find people that are left in that rubble. the earthquake hit right at 20 to 4. you can see the destroyed area around the clock tower after the earthquake, with the hans of the clock permanentl buildings turned to rubble and dust in a few moments. gary? >> that is just so sad. thank you very much. two other earthquakes hit hours after the one in italy. and rocking cities around the globe. this damage in myanmar. people there are using brooms and their hands to try to clean debris from famous buddhist pa go das. nearly 200 temples were damaged in the 6.8 magnitude earthquake. at least four people were co

and a tourist. the quake was so strong that it was felt in thailand and eastern india. the third earthquake hit off the indonesian coast. we talked to an expert from the colorado school of mines that put this all in perspective. he says earthquakes like this are not uncommon. and that the three locations are known for past seismic activity. but he says they probably were not related. >> when a large earthquake happens, it can trigger other earthquakes nearby. and that world. >> and around 200 earthquakes happen every year, around the world. he says it is by chance that all three of these big ones happen on the same day. not one, but five bank robberies all tied to the same suspect. 9 news reporter tarhonda thomas is at the bank hit and the suspected robber is free. and police think they have a pretty good idea who did this. >> they have a good idea and a good picture of the guy. we will show it to you in a

this tcf bank on tuesday is where the robber hit. once he got in, he got out really quickly. and handed the tell area note, within a matter of minutes, he was out here on evans and broadway. he ran out of the bank and got away. and normally this area is really busy, obviously not at this time of the day, but you can see just how quickly a robber can get away in an area like this. and let me give you a look at him. this is the man who police say robbed not just this bank, but four other banks. and his name is shawn scott. he is about 6 feet tall. 150 pounds. he is wearing a baseball cap. dark blew polo and blue jeans when he ran away from the. tcf bank on tuesday. he hit four other banks, the u.s. bank on broadway and three other banks in june, on spear, 38th and looks like he took a vacation in july and early august and struck again on tuesday. police want to catch this guy.

crimestoppers. zoo have to give your -- you don't have to give your name. you can remain anonymous. the phone number 720-913-stop. if you have any information, they want to hear it because they need to get the guy off the streets. like we said, we think he has robbed five banks in and out quickly and police have not said how much money he has gotten away with and it may be only a matter of time before he strikes again. >> tarhonda, thank you. the district attorney for sedgewick county is looking into one of her own county sheriffs and she very awkward. she represents several counties in eastern colorado. this is sedgewick county tom hanna, he heard the charges against him in court on tuesday. facing fell i had charges involving a sexual assault of a developmentally disabled inmate. court records say that the sheriff told a deputy on august 10 he was going to drive a female prisoner and his personal truck to the logan county jail. instead, the deputy says the

house. the investigators interviewed the inmate, a woman who says she has a low iq, and she told investigators the sheriff had her strip down, offered her $60 and then sexual assaulted her. the d.a. says she is confident the other sheriffs in the district are doing a good job. >> i have the utmost confidence in the other sheriffs in my district. i don't want this to reflect poorly on all rural sheriffs. >> the sheriff's bond was at $250,000. hanna is no longer sheriff. by law, that job now falls it to the county coroner and he is due in court in logan county on september 16. we have new information, on that deadly crash, in aurora, from earlier this week, and on monday, the driver of an suv drove on to a cross-walk where a group of people were walking. the denver post reports the 22- year-old who died pushed his 18- year-old friend to safety. before the crash. and the 41-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of

and police say he was speeding and lost control, while trying to turn. around the area, we have seen rain down low, and snow up high. great shot from tom watkinson up and above tree line. the snow is fairly common this time of the year. we saw it in the san juans yesterday. and speaking of yesterday, a few folks only with a couple of hundredths of an inch of rain, and a lot of it is a quarter of an inch or better during the day. that is just since yesterday morning. dry, this morning. and chilly, in the lower to middle 50s. through most of the morning commute. pretty comfortable day to be working outside. until 1:00 to 2:00 this afternoon. and storms get cranked up around here. and several areas are anticipating rain. >> marty, thank you. it is 5:39 right now. this winter, you can pack the gear and ride the slopes. and after a seven-year hiatus, we are asking you this morning, would you ride?

and 9 news reporter vida urbonas is live at union station, where the train will start. and vidda, the one question to be answered today is the cost of the train. >> that is, yef. the winter park resort will announce today the cost of the tickets, as well as those train times. and we were talking about that seven years that the train took off, and it is going to start up here at union station, behind me, and it is going to ends up at a new platform, at winter park, and in the past, the ski 2009. and you may remember, it was discontinued in 2009. and it was just way too expensive for a private operator to run. and amtrak is partnering with winter park to bring the train back. back in march of 2015, amtrak's winter park offered a chance to try the ski train for two days, over a weekend. and tickets for that just sold out for both days. immediately. and amtrak studied that trip to see if it made more sense to

c-dot studied that trial weekend. and c-dot says it is an analysis that showed it could take up to 500 vehicles off of the i-70 corridor during the peak ski traffic time. it is a win-win all around for everyone. yesterday, they announced that they will be bringing the ski train back. and this morning, it is when we are supposed to hear about the cost and the time of the trains. we want to know what viewers are saying this morning. are people going to be taking the ski train. >> it looked like we took a poll. it was, you know, nonscientific poll. but people jumped online to vote. >> yes. >> 79% right now. they say they will take the ski train. 7% say it is too expensive. >> even though we don't know how much it will cost. but i think it will be pricey, when they had the train two years ago, it was like 60 bucks. >> i think so. but a good way to avoid the i- 70 traffic. >> for sure. >> if you want to get around the mountain delays. >> yes.

welcome back. this may not be welcome news to you. sports authority gave all of its customer data to dick's sporting goods. that's according to the denver business journal. but there is a way you can opt out if you n' have your information. customers just have to contact sports authority, sports authority sent out an e-mail to customers saying their personal information now belongs to another sporting goods store. dick's bought the data in the bankrupt company's liquidation sale. your personal information will stay with sports authority until september 15. that information includes loyalty program information, like customer names, e-mail addresses, and phone numbers. you can get groceries delivered right to your

the grocery chain and sister station albertson's is letting customers make orders i online. the business journal reports they will apply a dozen trucks in denver from lone tree to denver and frozen items can be connected. >> i didn't know safeway and albertson's was connected. wow. am -- amazon is making a change to the grocery plan and it involves you coming to them. the company is considering hubs. right now, the click and collect sites are not in colorado. but amazon is looking at moving into spaces in san carlos and sunnyvale california, as well as in seattle. right now you can buy groceries on amazon fresh and prime and this would let the online giant expand in the $800 billion grocery market. clear skies.

after work, we are anticipating several areas of storms through the afternoon today. and tomorrow, a few areas of drizzle. and fog in the morning. and brief midday clearing. storms come back in the afternoon. and then i see it drying out a bit. on saturday, and sunday. as we get progressively warmer, heading into next week. and of course, broncos/rams coming up saturday night. on channel 20 by the way. and it is a 7:00 kickoff. 6:00 of course with the broncos tonight, it starts temperatures still pretty close to 80 degrees. and dropping down into the mid- 60s by 10:00. gosh, it looks like a nice night. i will call it mile high stadium. >> all right. good call, marty. i think it makes it a lot simpler. getting outside today to a beautiful start across the freeways and dry roads for now. and possibly changing later today and into tomorrow. i really love when that cloud cover moves in and it helps out with the sun glare delays. and no major problems. it has been a totally safe

what to expect. they did wash out a bridge and county road 40 was shut down, and people living there say the cleanup is a group effort. >> everyone is willing to help a neighbor and you will probably see that, helping somebody else before they help themselves and that is just huge. huge lesson to have up here. >> for sure. damage to homes and property, still being assessed. no injuries have been reported from the fire people living there say they are worried about rain causing more flooding though in the burn scar. let's check in with marty. sounds like they could get some more showers down there today. >> unfortunately, yes. it is one of those double-edged swords where you want rain, but in areas that have been affected by wildfires, it is not always a positive thing. the thunderstorms through the midwest this morning, and a few showers to our north and east. and it is fairly quiet in colorado right now. and that will be true through

thunderstorms this afternoon, in a more traditional time period, 2:30, 3:30, and then lasting through the dinner hour. however, even after sunset tonight, through 10:00, to midnight, 1:00 a.m., light showers continuing, it is going to be a very damp evening for us tonight, with locally heavy rain, up to about three quarters of an inch, in a few spots, up and down the front range, and you know how that goes, some of these storms have small rain cores that are a little heavier than the general through. temperatures in the 70s, early on with 60s in the foothills. we will start the storms in the mountains. and that will extend down into southern colorado. and into parts of fremont county, and towards teller county, which is why we could have localized flooding again, in some of the burn areas. with moderate to heavy rain spreading out. as far as 80 to 90 miles east of the front range to the plains. 70s and 80s in lower train. in the 60s and 70s in the mountains. let's go 75 today.
