9news reporter noel brennan spoke with aurora police this afternoon and they're using this technology to try to help solve a cold case. >> they are. they're hoping this technology will lead to a break in the unsolved bennett family murder case from 1984. you're looking at two composites of the suspect. one has been age progressed. a lab in virginia created these using the suspect's dna. aurora police are still looking for john detective steve connor is on the case. the man who broke into the bennett's home in january of 1984. >> there are no witnesses. >> reporter: no one saw who killed bruce and debra and their daughter melissa the day before her 8th birthday. >> it's one of the older unsolved cases that we have. >> reporter: while case files sat on shelves technology got better and better, first came

>> if you'd asked me five years ago, i would have said no way. how can you produce something from dna? >> reporter: the work was done by parabon nano labs in virginia. the company uses dna like a blueprint to make predictions about what someone looks like. >> hair color, eye color, facial features, skin tone, whether or not they have freckles. >> reporter: pinpointing those physical details can be a huge help to police. >> other ethnic minorities or races, i can eliminate them baup have. >> reporter: it can lead to breaks in cases that made headlines years ago. >> something that for us we're excited about because it puts a face or an image to a person we're looking for. >> reporter: detective connor hopes someone can put a name to this face. aurora police don't plan to use this technology on every case. for one, it's expensive. police would only say it costs in the thousands of dollars. also it's only useful if dna evidence exists.

only get better and hopefully will be cheaper sometime in the near future. >> so we're seeing nothing in the dna database on this person? >> nothing so far. they checked a couple people and say it was not a positive match. >> thanks. a colorado mom managed to keep her 2-year-old son's head above water, a selfless act that saved his life but took hers. this happened on lake powell in the southeast corner of houseboat. his mom chelsea russell of lakewood jumped in after him. neither had a life jacket on. by the time russell grabbed her son the houseboat was a distance away. another family member got the two before they went under water. the child was alive and awake on his mother's chest. russell was unconscious. they tried cpr but could not revive her. satellite images are giving

earthquakes in italy. many buildings have been reduced to rubble while tents have been put up to house those unable to return to their homes. the quake has killed at least 250 people. rescuers are combing through debris hoping to find survivors. today they found one. a faint voice was heard. beneath the rubble rescuers found a 10-year-old girl named julia who was trapped nearly 17 hours and made out without any meanwhile questions remain about why so many buildings crumbled. by law they're supposed to be built to withstand earthquakes that are pretty common in that area. the rain today moved into the eastern plains. more is developing in the mountains tonight and could move in from the foothills. we will dry out in time for the weekend or at least part of it. kathy has details of the forecast coming up. the tornado that hit indiana wednesday was an ef3

service. the most dramatic video of the destruction was perhaps the starbucks decimated in kokomo. the tornado had winds in excess of 150 miles an hour, lasted 10 minutes and traveled nearly 5 miles. no one was killed. indiana governor mike pence took the day off from campaigning to take stock of the damage. >> the resilience just makes me proud. people that are out broad shoulders putting their lives back together, going to rebuild right er neighborhood, tells you everything to know about the people of indiana. >> the national weather service says at least seven tornadoes hit indiana wednesday. the number could go higher. folks in louisiana are desperate for help as clean-up efforts continue following days of severe flooding. volunteers have spent a lot of time pitching in, but the state says they need more help. they also hope for more donations to fund recovery efforts. the clean-up will likely take months. fema is sending trailers for

place to stay, but president obama said federal assistance will not be enough. 13 people died as a result of that severe flooding. no apologies or price cuts offered from the head of mylan, the maker of life saving epipens which have jumped in price by 400% in recent years. the price has risen from $90 to 600-dollar over 10 years. at the same time her compensation has skyrocketed to about $18 million. when asked why about many middle men demanding a cut. >> i have to play -- the reality is in the brand pharmaceutical market this isn't an epipen issue or mylan issue. this is a healthcare issue. we are going to continue to run a business and we are going to continue to meet the supply and demand of what's out there. >> the company today said it's offing more discounts and $300

and $300 coupons. without a price cut the coupons are just a pr move. two people considered persons of interest in the murder and kidnapping of three children were arrested this afternoon in pueblo. joshua robertson and britney humphrey from fresno were taken into custody at a motel. police want to talk to them about the shooting death of robertson's half sister and mother of three girls. the childr missing after the mother was found shot to death on the side of the road in los angeles county. the three children were found safe yesterday in new mexico left with a good samaritan who called police. investigators in jefferson hope an artist sketch will help them identify the man who tried to kidnap a 9-year-old girl. she was playing in her driveway monday evening when a man came up from behind her, touched her shoulder and said come with me. she describes him as tan, 6

one tattoo on his left arm is a red skull. you're asked to call 720-913- stop if you might know who it is. there is a reward up to $2,000. some of denver's homeless are suing the city. they have an attorney who says the eviction of people from camps in recent months is unconstitutional. the suit claims the city forced them to clear the way for new housing and economic development in the downtown denver area and that policy led downtown denver who appeared to be poor or tried to protect themselves from the weather. the mayor's office says it has not seen the suit. it says once we receive the complaint we will evaluate the claims and respond. somebody stole a denver broncos helmet from a player during an autograph signing last month. today pictures of the suspect were released. the man with the orange hat took the helmet that was sitting on the ground next to the player as he signed autographs following practice

passed the helmet to a second man. they left together. the stolen helmet is a redell revolution speed classic valued over $400 clearly marked with the denver broncos logo. contact crime stoppers with any information. u.s. swimmer ryan lochte is charged with filing a false robbery report while at the brazilian olympics in brazil. several media outlets are send an attorney in his place in court and won't have to travel to rio. lochte initially said he and three other swimmers were robbed at gunpoint in a taxi by men with a police ban returning to the olympic village. security video contradicted the story. lochte has apologized and acknowledged he was intoxicated. the olympics are over, but the paralympic featuring athletes with disabilities are

football coach from lakewood. he wants to draw attention to the athletes he says are overlooked. >> reporter: they say football is a sport born from toughness. perhaps no one knows about that more than the green mountain youth football coach. >> when i coach, ill use my disability to -- i use my disability to teach the boils th -- boys the toughness of the game. >> reporter: he's a quadriplegic and used a wheelchair since he was 17, but if you think that would slow him down, you're wrong. >> i've been with team usa since 2009. i was in london 2012. >> reporter: adam is a member of the paralympic wheelchair rugby team, but before he leave for rio he wants to raise awareness shining a light on something he says does not see

today is the 100th anniversary of the national park service. more than 1,000 people gathered at the washington monument to form the service's logo using green, white or brown umbrellas. special events are planned across the country the rest of the month starting with free admission to all 412 national parks from now through sunday. this is one of those studies an employee would love to show the boss done by employees are found to be most effective when they only work 25 hours a week. 3,000 men and 3,500 women over age 40 were studied given several types of tests. both did the best early in the workweek between zero hours and 25. after 25 it started going downhill. a texas utility worker went above or maybe below the call of duty trying to repair a

weekend. this time it's pretty well timed. there were some beautiful scenes of summer up and down the front range today, summer sunflowers with just enough sun coming out from behind the cloud to make for a pretty afternoon, but a rainy start tomorrow. 71 degrees in denver today, a far cry from the average high of 86 and nowhere near the record. at the airport this hour temperatures are holding in the mid-50s, winds southeast at 8. calm wind, cloudy skies, dry in the backyard outside downtown. thundershowers are coming off the foothills will bring more rain to us. as a matter of fact, our rain forecast model indicates some of the heaviest rain will fall around evergreen, idaho spring down to castle rock, parker and toward bennett, dia in the next 24 hours. you can see the green blending in with pink and purple. that's a rain/snow line at 10 to 12,000 feet.

nonsevere storms. we've got an area of low pressure spinning over portions of utah and nevada. the severe weather threat continues east of us where it will stay tomorrow impacting travel, thunderstorms developing between dallas and memphis up through chicago, a cool pool of air settling in across the great basin, intermountain west and midwest. with the tropical flow from the southwest it's another unsettled cool day. the threat for severe weather appears north of us, denver up and st. louis. those traveling there tomorrow may run into some issues. look at this cool pool of air across about half of u.s. it's still cooler than average in phoenix. the heat is building across the south and southeast. speaking of the southeast, the south eastern plains and southeastern corner of our state tonight dealing with the heaviest thunderstorms. we have the chance of showers rolling off the foothill in the city. skies won't clear a lot.

in the morning, maybe sprinkles in the city for the morning drive, then a wave of showers that moves through by midday tomorrow. so another cloudy, cool and unsettled period of weather with a third round of shower come through in the afternoon. once the whole system rolls out the warming and drying trend begins starting on saturday. it's chilly in the high country. when you woke up this morning, did you feel the nip in the air like fall? you'll have that tomorrow morning. there will be very little sunshine for the front range. 80s out west but temperatures tomorrow will be below average again one more day. mid-60s in the foothills. those driving to central city, blackhawk, conifer, light jacket may be needed, low 60s in nederland and grand lake. tonight the chance of a shower, rumble of thunder, a little clearing, low 51, chilly start, mix of clouds and sun tomorrow, mid-60s at noon, mid-70s in the afternoon. we push into the 80s in time for the weekend, stay there sunday and monday.

some point this year paxton lynch will be the guy. mike klis, 9news. all the ladies in the house are doing the paxy dance, still of the night comes from seattle where dallas cowboys quarterback tony romo suffered another back injury and had to leave after only taking three snaps against the seahawks tanks for nothing, this afternoon's little league world series game between mexico and south korea was delayed due to broken glass. a 75-mile an hour fastball bounced directly into espn's television camera shattering the lens, took several minutes to clean up the mess.
