blood centers about the zika virus, what's being done to keep the blood supply safe. >> after cooler temperatures and rain warm weather returns just in time for the weekend. >> and a denver restaurant is helping victims of the earthquake in italy. 9news starts now. investigators with the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives say at least a pawn shop near 88th and washington in thornton of the they're offering a $10,000 reward to help find the suspects. 9news reporter nick mcgill sat down with the atf to learn more. >> we're not entirely sure why this trend is happening, but it's very concerning. >> reporter: it's a story we've heard before. somebody somewhere breaks into a pun or gun shop and take a lot of gun -- pawn or gun shop and take a lot of guns, the latest example happening three

colorado is not an exception. >> reporter: tuesday an unknown number of people broke into the jumping jack cash pawn shop in thornton. it's unclear if anyone else is involved. >> any time we see a burglary like this it's incredibly alarming because we know that those firearms are likely destined for future crimes and criminal hands. >> reporter: a fact that proved pe last year about 1,600 guns recovered in crime scenes nationwide traced back to an earlier theft of a gun dealer, although it's unclear how many of those guns were stolen in 2015. this year alone there's been about 170 guns stolen from licensed gun dealers just in the denver metro area. >> people aren't collecting these guns to stare at them later or using them for hunting. they're going to be used in crimes. >> reporter: which is why it's so important they get an early

comes forward in this case so they can begin to get some of these guns off the streets. >> i can't say at this time with any certainty if this is a new reality or if this is just an odd year. >> reporter: in denver nick mcgill, 9news. >> the atf said this burglary does not appear related to other gun dealer burglaries that occurred earlier this summer in littleton. anyone with information on this burglary can call thornton police at 720-977-5069. again that number is 720-977- 5069 or call 1-800-283-4867. a buckley airman says he and his wife were playing with his gun when she got shot in the head and died. aurora police arrested 21-year- old brian leron rivera for manslaughter last night. they found his wife dead inside the couple's apartment.

around 6:00 last night. he told them he had shot his wife and she died. he told investigators he and his wife were playing with his gun trying to take it from each other's hands when it went off. three fort collin officers are on routine paid leave after officers shot and killed a man. 63-year-old jerry jackson died of multiple gunshot wounds. police responded to a domestic dispute. officials say they sa illegally enter a woman's home and came back out with a weapon in hand. officers tased him. he kept coming at them and they shot him. the three officers were placed on leave which is standard procedure until the investigation is done. the food and drug administration is urging all u.s. blood banks to start screening for the zika virus, a major expansion intended to protect the nation's blood supply from the disease.

screening blood donations for zika. now the fda says 11 other states must do it within a month because they're at grand jury risk and all blood banks should -- they're at greater risk and all blood banks should be doing it in about three months. we already test for hiv and west nile virus. >> several months bonfils has been screening all potential blood donors as they come in. there's a sheet which lists all the areas prevelant transmitted by mosquitoes and if you've been there within the last 28 days, those areas are off limits from donating blood. >> bone fill says it will supply -- bonfils says it will comply in order to maintain its license. while they're called none binding recommendations, -- nonbinding recommendations, the fda spokesperson says they are a requirement. a new mom says she is terrified about the possible

michaela looks healthy but has zika. her mom caught the virus while in venezuela. doctors in miami were surprised because michaela was born without microcephaly, a really common birth complication associated with zika, but she does have calcifications in her brain and scarring in her eye. a study of brazilian babies suggests even those who are born without obvious symptoms of zika can have brain abnormalities later. a flight bound for dia from omaha got delayed. doesn'un until you find out why around 9:30 last night. a man at eppley airfield in omaha started acting crazy screaming that people were trying to kill him. the man stripped down to his underwear, took off running from police, climbed a fence, stole an airline truck and rammed it into the southwest plane boarding for denver. no one was hurt. the man was arrested and faces criminal charges. passengers were booked on another flight and arrived in denver three hours later. an officer's body camera is

took to rescue a man from a fast burning car crash yesterday in georgia. the man is in the back seat hanging out of the window. as flames got closer, you can see the man hanging out of the window. what you just saw was an explosion. the fire was so intense other officers say heat was unbearable from as far away as 50 feet. what didn't help was an explosion that happened during the rescue. the doors were all door back enough to pull the man through the windowful unfortunately the driver of the car was -- windowful unfortunately the driver of the car was killed. in georgia several people had to hold up a kiddie coaster to let six kid and one adult escape in a county fair in north georgia. the oriental express began to collapse with people on it. no one was hurt. the ride has been dismantled. friends of a lakewood mother say she was the kind of

35-year-old chelsea russell died of heart failure while she tried to rescue her son in lake powell. the 2-year-old fell off of a house boat tuesday. russell dove in to save him. the toddler was found floating on top of his mother alive, but she was unconscious. up before -- unconscious. >> they was rescuing her -- she was rescuing her child. it's going to be very tough particularly on her husband and these two small children. >> russell was a mother of two and a triathlete. she was also very passionate about her job as an attorney in denver. visitors to rocky mountain national park are told not to

purses containing credit cards were stolen. shortly after that a man was caught on camera using cards to buy camping equipment. if you have any information, know this guy, seen him before, your local police and the rocky mountain national park police want to hear from you. authorities obviously want to hear from you. so you can call the rocky mountain national park tip line. the future of space exploration came crashing down into a pool of water today, part of a splashdown test of scientists in virginia used explosives in a pendulum to fling the 11-foot test capsule into the water. the craft quickly disappeared in a splash before bouncing behind a safety net. more than 500 different sensors measured aspects of the impact including the level of strain on the carbon fiber heat shield. orion may carry astronauts into space by 2023.

and help catch the person who stole your phone. bookstores might seem like a thing of the past, but amazon opened its first physical bookstore last year in seattle and plans to open more next year. it showcases gadgets in addition to books. new stores are planned for chicago, south dakota and -- san diego and portland. here's an example of w properly onto a highway. in des moines, iowa, a person quickly moved across three lanes into the path of a semi. the truck was traveling about 65 miles per hour during the collision. the car, of course, was turned sideways and pushed a little ways. no one was hurt. the driver of the car does face charges. here's another thing drivers should avoid the county toll road. authorities in houston released video of a houston who got out of her car to rescue a cat.

sunday. sunday looks to be the drier of the two days, but tomorrow should be lovely. as a matter of fact, fair skies, light winds in the city and a nice mild start to your day tomorrow, 7 a.m., mid-50s warming to 10 degrees by 9 a.m. how about 80 today in denver? big improvement over the last two days. about 6 degrees cooler than average. 60 at the airport. winds are calm in the backyard outside the studios with almost 60 downtown. webe thunderstorms rolling off the foothill tonight. some of these storms have reached severe limits. we'll talk more about that in a minute. i wanted to bring you up to date on the tropics. there are two tropical systems in the atlantic that may affect the mainland u.s. to the north the storm is gaston. this is 99l. all the forecast modeling has this tropical system moving toward the gulf producing heavy rain across the caribbean, bahamas and potentially florida

three to five days. if your travel plans take you on a cruise or to the other side of the lower 48, just know that the tropics are starting to heat up. meantime our radar calming down. all of the severe storms pushing into nebraska and kansas tonight, fast moving storms producing a little rain, wind and lightning. the heavy weather is east of burlington tonight, heaviest storms around big springs and dallas and jackson up memphis. the cool air is scouring out. the low drops south and pushes in enough moisture that with heating of the day we'll get a couple thunderstorms move off the foothills during the 3 to 5 p.m. time period. moisture is much moral limited. we're -- more limited. we're starting to see that warming and drying trend. on the futurecast there's another little wave of showers that might push over the urban

sunshine tomorrow, a nice warm day and then those foothill thunderstorms start to develop pushing east over the urban corridor in the afternoon. i don't think we'll be dealing with severe weather, but look at this line of storms that pushes out of southeastern colorado tomorrow afternoon. not entirely quiet statewide. we've got 30s and 40s in the high country tonight, 50s on the plains, warmest temperatures tomorrow in southeastern colorado, 84 in denver and fort collins with temperatures mild out west. really good tomorrow, nice day, up at evergreen 74 and 67 will be the high in grand lake. city forecast tonight, we still have a chance of a brief shower between midnight and 2 a.m. then skies clear. we drop to 53 which is where we start tomorrow morning, mid-70s by lunchtime, mid-80s in the afternoon. again isolated storms expected saturday, a drier day sunday, temperatures push close to 90

show case art from all kinds of artists who have autism. this is the second year for the show started by 15-year-old max miller. he was diagnosed with autism at age 5. max says his mother was told that he should be institutionalized. he spoke his first words at 6. he didn't read until he was 11. now he's reading at grade level and he said he owes his turn- around to art and he's so grateful he can share others. >> from the beginning of 2013 i was like 12 and now here we are 2016 with tons of kids are in the denver art museum really warms my heart. instead of feeling like this feeling that one feeling where your heart is like a rock now it's like a feather. >> oh, when he says that, it just breaks your heart, doesn't it? the exhibit runs through october 2nd at the denver arts
