ready that are doing some tailgating, i think maybe one or two isolated storms could potentially creep through. but after about 7:00, 8:00, once the game gets going, i think they should be just fine. a really pleasant summer evening to take in some football and enjoy all the fun down there. one or two brief storms potentially creeping into the downtown denver metro area. by 6:00, 7:00, temperatures still in the mid to upper 70s. and by 10:00, when the guys are winding down the game, hopefully coming off the field with a be incredibly comfortable. we'll be watching for partly cloudy skies. right now, still monitoring a few showers. not a lot of action here in the city. that's a okay with me. across the eastern plains, we've had some severe thunderstorms across cheyenne, it kit carson counties, everything shifting east into kansas. i've seen reports of half dollar sized hail within that one particular cell and 60 miles per hour gusts. as we go throughout the remainder of this afternoon and evening, one or two just might

we're left with a few clouds out there. and then over night, those clouds will start to thicken up and build back into the city. it was just a gorgeous start to the day. temperatures now in the low 80s here in the city. greeley, and fort collins, we're at 86. same in sterling, 50s and 60s. mainly up in the mountains. the rest of this evening, one or two storms within the next hour or two. and then things start to wind down. we're going to be watching a beautiful, beautiful looking evening. tarhonda, hopefully we're going to be watching the broncos, we're decked out in our orange, we're ready. >> we're wearing orange, hunting for a w. we know we're going to get this one. >> you ladies are confident. i like that. speaking of the broncos they will face the rams tonight in denver in their third preseason game. kickoff is set for 7:00 at sports authority field. that's where rod mackey and mike klis join us tonight. >> reporter: i think it's going to be the final time where we
5:06 pm
for week number four if we actually know who the quarterback will be after this one? >> you're going to have to figure out who's going to pad that fourth game? you know, will it be mark sanchez actually playing in the fourth preseason game. right now it looks like trevor simeon is one solid half away from being the quarterback against the carolina panthers september 8th at which point he will have shocked the nfl universe. because he was the after thought in this and now here he is, one good half away from becoming the opening day starter of the super bowl champion team. >> even though sanchez has made those mistakes which kubiak has preached not to do, simeon has played himself into this position. he's made it a competition. when they brought in sanchez, and didn't add other players. a lot of people thought it would be mark. but it's been what trevor has done well. we saw that in the last game.
5:07 pm
course. >> i think simeon gave them a nice option. there's no doubt about it these guys thought mark sanchez was going to win the job. he had the experience, everything being equal. they wanted mark sanchez to be the quarterback on opening day. what hurt sanchez was that he had mistakes piled on his history. he's got a history of turn overs. and then he comes out here and he has the pick against the bears. he has the two fumbles last week against the 49ers. plus he had some picks in practices also. all that worked against him. i think they did want mark sanchez. but then they said, you know, look, this other guy is kind of conservative. he's solid. he's not spectacular. but it's what this team needs given that great defense they have. plus the running game. so simeon right now, kubiak i think peoples is the better feet. >> it'll be interesting to see if lynch gets in to start the second half or how much he plays. you want to get a look. john lynch said it up in the

the ones. let's see if demaryius thomas can track the ball down when back up receivers cannot. >> i think the key, whether or not he comes in second, is that lynch is going to play a lot. i don't think sanchez is playing much in this game. i think you'll see a lot of simeon early in the first half. i think you'll see a lot of paxton lynch in the second half. where mark sanchez fits in there. a series or two in between. a series at the end. but a lot of paxton lynch and simeon tonight. >> it'll be we'll have more coming up later in sports. don't forget about the pregame show at 6:00. and kickoff at 7:00 on channel 20. can't wait for that. everywhere you go in denver, people are talking about this. who will that quarterback be? hopefully we'll know a little bit more after tonight's game guys. very good. all right thank you guys appreciate that. >> if not, i got a nine-year- old with a heck of an arm if they need somebody. here's another football story that's got people really talking today.

much bigger waves for what he did before last night's game than what he did during the game. kaepernick sat during the national anthem before the preseason game against greenbay. following the game, he told a reporter quote, i am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color, end quote. >> some people have issues with the black lives matter movement. but when it comes to the american flag, there's some sensitivities, he said he he's 100% behind this cause to the point where he even said they can take football away. they can take my endorsements away. but i'm going to stand up for what i believe is right. >> the 49ers released a statement saying while the national anthem is a special part of the pregame ceremony, the team recognized the right of an individual to choose to participate or not. the nfl says while it encourages players to stand during the anthem, it has no policy requiring them to do so. this certainly has a lot of
5:10 pm
it's making headlines. >> it's all over. because like you said, there are a lot of real sensitivities with the national anthem, with military families and people whose families gave their lives and they're saying well, this doesn't correlate with the message that you're sending. >> people are taking sides on this issue. >> absolutely. i think we're going to dig deeper on this. >> we'll see this story for days to come. nbc's hit show the voice will be spending quite a time workers to test their skills in a competition at the jefco fairgrounds. how the minnesota state fair honored the life and music

i've been waiting to wear it. my 10-dollar sweater. it's on facebook. let's talk to some other guys who got some good things to say right now. sam and ron with sports abc. sam, the broncos have named trevor simeon to start against the rams, does this mean to you that the quarterback competition is over? >> pretty much. i mean to , got it. it's the third game. the dress rehearsal game. he's starting. i guess the real race, and it's funny that now we're worried about who's number two. and it looks like paxton lynch has over taken the veteran, mark sanchez there. >> i'm not sure anybody has over taken anybody. i think all three guys on some level or another reminded the broncos of i wish we had somebody else. but i think this, trevor simeon of all three of them probably
5:42 pm
and that's why he's there. i look at the big picture and i think to myself, trevor simeon, mark sanchez, mark sanchez trevor simeon, what does it matter. because paxton lynch eventually is going to have the job. and i think it's going to be sooner rather than later. >> you said that. we talked about the corner backs in the past. i think i told you that just before the start of training camp, that we'll get used to saying the name, and even going back to the draft, when you mentioned that ricky hunley was a quarterback whisperer. i said he was going to compete for the job. >> and he has. >> mark sanchez is really disappointed that here's a guy that has all the experience. and they brought him in to say okay boys, let me show you how it's done. and all he's done is let those guys show they're just as good. >> they brought them in to give
5:43 pm
they figured he'd get the job. and from day one they found out he is who they thought he was. thank you. and they just realized, can't do it. with this kind of a defense, we can't play somebody that turns it over all the time. >> but i don't think this effects the team the way some people might think. some people have gone back to the 99 season. that's different. the 98 broncos and the guys who came above it. they went to war with bubby. none of these guys, they don't know any of them. >> it doesn't matter. we're going to start with trevor simeon and see how it goes. the only thing we know is that paxton lynch, eventually because of his pedigree, is going to get the job and probably keep the job, if he plays well enough, he's the broncos future. and he might be their present. >> set mark sanchez free. that's the question everybody's

from colorado's sports leader, here's rod mackey. welcome back to sports authority field at mile high as we continue to countdown to the broncos and rams. tonight you will see trevor simeon start for a second straight game. and in the mind's of most, unless simeon completely implodes like multiple pick

starter against carolina, thursday night in that opener that we're all looking forward to so much. so the big question coming into this is who will back up simeon? mike klis? drew soicher both join me now. we had breaking klis. that's what we call breaking sports news. is mike on twitter coming out with breaking news ? we now know when simeon sits who will back him up, at least for tonight. >> paxton lynch, you figured since kubiak kept it if it was sanchez, he could have announced it. it is paxton lynch. they want to give him a series with the first teamers to start the second half. i think simeon goes the first half and then paxton lynch played well with the third stringers. now let's see what he can do with the big boys against jeff fisher's a-listers on defense. that's a good defense. so if those two guys play well, i think mark sanchez's employment with the broncos is a little shaken.
5:48 pm
information, that mark sanchez doesn't even play tonight. perhaps is cut in a couple days and we've seen his last pass as a bronco all ready. >> it's possible. right now i think this is plan a and it is sports. and it's live sports. and we don't know -- we're better at telling what did happen than predicting what's going to happen. but right now the plan is simeon first half, paxton lynch second half, mark sanchez is gets hit, heaven forbid someone gets hit and is knocked silly for a couple plays, mark sanchez will be ready to go. it's not over yet for sanchez. i still think how these two kids perform has a lot to do with his future. >> i know if you get rid of sanchez, you don't have to give up that condition. and you do save money. but this is a good plan b. what happens if simeon gets knocked around off the bat in game one. paxton is going in to face that carolina defense.
5:49 pm
sanchez is 4.5 million. maybe you can cut that down to two. the other thing working against sanchez though, you hate to keep him on the roster as the number three and then have to give philadelphia a seventh round draft pick, if you cut him, you don't have to give philadelphia that draft pick. that's kind of conspiring against mark sanchez. >> it makes the third preseason game so interesting. >> all the preseason games have been interesting. thank goodness for the quarterback question. something we'll talk about much champs are going to open with a quarterback with no nfl snaps. >> we're going to have an hours worth of you on the pregame show. don't forget. the pregame show with mike, with drew, chad brown will join us, we'll have it at 6:00. you'll have to turn the channel, it's over on channel 20. other positions of interest, positions that could change in this game, how about wide receiver?

receiver. and aaron matas has his money on, cody latimer. >> no longer second guessing, cody latimer has the inside route on the broncos third wide out position. because he's breathing a little easier. >> not too much worried about the three spot. i'm worried about getting on this team first. >> you would think the receiving core is missing peyton manning. in a weird way, latimer is happy number 18 isn't around any more. >> for me, it's not being so much nervous. i was always nervous around him. so it's like a fresh start for me. if i go out, i mess up, and i'm going to run fast and play fast and make plays. >> he's done so in training camp. >> three consecutive catches. >> the third year can be a launching point for young receivers. maybe latimer is ready to take off. >> i'm excited for what's to come this season. i have to keep working hard. and keep making plays.

through his first two seasons in the nfl. aaron matas, 9news. >> aaron, thank you, back to the quarterbacks and more evidence that mark sanchez's free fall has become an historic free fall. he's listed behind trevor simeon, perhaps behind paxton lynch, and now you can find sanchez behind kicker brandon mcmanis. you see it there. the kicker gets love. on the program, his picture appeared above the name of sanchez and the back up punter. mcmanis was the team scoring star and big things are expected from him this season as well. we are not just about football on this show. how about a little baseball? an early game today between the washington nationals and your colorado rockies in dc. first pitch, 11:00 a.m.
