on hd doppler 9. you can see the showers and thunderstorms pushing in from the east, northeast as the center of the storm is in parts of south central colorado. now about 145 lightning strikes going on statewide. in town all the showers and thunderstorms we had about 1:30, 2:00 fizzling out, but they are picking back up in fort collins, greeley, longmont, platteville, you folks getting in on those heavy downpours and you can see lighter showers in castle rock south toward advisory in place in el paso county until 6 p.m. that's where the heaviest showers will be. by 11:00, midnight everything starts to wind down. tomorrow morning we kick off the day with a little sunshine and more storms in the afternoon. right now low 70s, 64 in greeley, grab a sweater. you'll want it later tonight. we will monitor a couple evening storms here and there and a very similar setup on tap tomorrow, too. i'll go over the timing when i anticipate more storms moving

can't forget the labor day weekend is almost upon us with sunshine and more rain. a father admits to police he tried to kill his 2-year-old son by crashing his car at 75 miles per hour with the toddler not buckled up. isaiah's mom told 9wants to know bolton half his body was in a cast. >> reporter: forget the koala. he must have the polar bear from the gift shop, but probably most of all right now like any 2-year-old wants to run and climb. he's a good climber, mom nancy lopez says. isaiah won't be able to do any of that for two months because his dad tried to kill him last sunday according to arapahoe county investigators.

on purpose with isaiah unbuckled driving up to 75 miles an hour. according to court documents, nathan weitzel told the detectives, "the reason he wanted to kill isaiah was because being a father was a big responsibility and he did not think he was man enough to raise a child." weitzel told police he took isaiah to the park and while the boy played he was thinking of ways to kill him. >> he is in the place that he jail for a long time. >> reporter: he also used cocaine that day. >> tiger. >> tiger. >> reporter: as you probably figured out, isaiah loves stuffed animals, spider-man, cars and dinosaurs also up there. today he's coloring his cast. he's probably confused about what happened and why. anyone touched by his story would be. his mom is, but now isaiah's full recovery is her focus and hope.

how he could do something like this, but i'm hoping that he recovers fast and that people pray for us and for my son to get better. >> reporter: anastasiya bolton, 9news. >> it would be natural to be angered or outraged by this story. we have more information about ways people are helping the family on the driver of a second car possibly connected to a deadly hit and run last night. 26-year-old nicholas richland was crossing alameda at lowell when he was hit by a dodge caliber and died at the scene. police believe the caliber was racing a black sedan. witnesses told officers they noticed the two cars at a red light revving their engines. when the light turned green, they took off at highway speeds. the 17-year-old driving the caliber was arrested and faces

accident. the second driver could also face charges. >> the drag racer who is driving the black sedan is not directly involved, that is, they did not contact the pedestrian as far as we can tell, but what's their complicity in this? in my opinion i would present that case to the d.a. and let them make the decision as to whether criminal charges should be filed. >> police have not yet released the victim's name. denver police say they believe the man arrested for an assault on the high may be connected to another assault on that trail. 26-year-old demarcus bogart was arrested over the weekend accused of assaulting a woman on the trail friday at east dartmouth avenue and south fourth street. there was another assault on the trail about a week before and the same suspect could be connected. police are still investigating. denver police are also trying to figure out what led up to two people being shot at

sunday. multiple suspects forced their way into the home armed with handguns and shot two people killing one of them. he's been identified as 53-year- old frank chavez. the other victim is in the hospital in intensive care. police are still waiting to speak to that person to learn more about what happened. it's not believed to be gang related. a man shot by a denver police officer over the weekend had a criminal record spanning 30 years. saturday morning a woman called police about 409-year-old terry salazar -- problems at her home. there were several warrants out for his arrest. when police arrived, salazar ran upstairs. officers followed, heard a woman screaming, kicked in the door, say salazar had a knife, slashed at officers. they tried to stun gun him. he kept coming. investigators say salazar backed the officers into a corner and lunged at them. one officer opened fire. that officer is on routine administrative leave. salazar died at the hospital. federal aviation officials

commercial drone aircraft operating in the u.s. within the year as the result of new safety rules that open the skies to them. today some of the regulations for unmanned aircraft include a weight limit of 55 pounds. there's a time restriction with drones flying only in daylight. drones must also stay within the pilot's visual line of sight. commercial operators initially complained that the two new rules would be could rigid. the federal aviation granting exemptions for companies that shows they can use them safely. >> importantly it also includes a provision that allows people to request waivers if they want to operate outside the parameters of what's included within the rule. >> the faa says it's already granted 76 exemptions, most of them to companies that want to fly drones at night. it's an effort to end blindless around the world by the year 2020. a new york businessman has offered several million dollars

brake-through to end visual impairment. 9news reporter maya rodriguez went to the colorado center for the blind to talk to people about this effort where she found out everyone is excited about the idea as you might think. >> reporter: it's nearly lunchtime at the colorado center for the blind and students are preparing a meal they will enjoy but never see. >> one of the things that we really want to focus on, you know, is to change the perceptions of beelineness. >> reporter: the center works to teach those who are visually impaired how to live wi blindness doing things sighted people do a little differently. >> we can live full lives. we work. we have kids. we just do everything that anybody else can do. >> reporter: but could it be different? in the september issue of national geographic the magazine looks at efforts to end blindness including a $3 million prize offered by one visually impaired new york businessman. >> ending blindness in and of itself is not a bad goal, but i

>> reporter: scott labar is president of the national federation of the blind in colorado. he said the idea that people who are blind live in perpetual darkness is a bit of a myth. >> sure. let's try and eliminate various physical ailments if we, can but let's not send such a negative message about those conditions that it really causes people to believe that blindness is a tragedy. it's not a tragedy. >> reporter: there some medical break-throughs, though, a type of bionic eye and special glasses that can improve sight, but an all out cure is not a reality yet. for some who are blind she did say it would not matter to them. >> would i choose to have my sight -- -- for some who are blind say it would not matter

lightning in central norway has killed more than 300 wild

of reindeer carcasses scattered across a field in the mountains. 323 animals were killed including 70 calves in the lightning storm friday. the agency said it was not uncommonly for reindeer or other wildlife to be killed by lightning strikes, but for it to occur in such large numbers was unheard of. after controversy over massive price mikes the company that sells epipens announced it will soon off a generic version. mylan said it will launch the first generic epinephrine auto injector in a few costs $300, half of the brand name version. the two versions will be identical. the auto injector is preloaded with epinephrine and used when a person has a severe allergic reaction. consumers and politicians have accused the company of price gouging since the price for a pair of epipens has climbed relatedly from about $90 in 2007. rtd has free 16th street mall shuttle rides today

peak. the summit 14,000 feet, yes, we're talking about snowfall and several inches of it earlier this morning. out there in fort collins we're also watching the darker skies looming as rain showers are en route. believe it or not we hit the 80s today, cooler in the mountains, 53 in leadville, low 70s in alamosa, trinidad and springfield. now at the airport mostly cloudy skies, temperatures remaining at 70 degrees th these storms out of the southwest around 17 miles per hour. a bit of a breeze in the 9news backyard, but that's okay. our temperatures are a little cooler. earlier this afternoon we saw a line of thunderstorms push throughout parts of the metro area. you probably saw darker skies around 2:00, 2:30. it finally delivered some decent rain, many locations picking up between .1 to .2 in the heart of the city and across the western suburbs as

get a drop at dia where we keep our records. this storm system is sitting across south central colorado and parts of the san luis valley. with that counterclockwise flow it will once again wrap up all that moisture moving it into the front range by tomorrow afternoon. you can see the central part of the state picking up the most amount of rain showers around here, but some heavier pockets in northern colorado, aerial flood advisory in place for ports of weld and morgan counti and morgan counties until later on tonight. right now just south of castle rock we're watching light rain showers, thing getting going still in eastern el paso county with flash flood warnings until about 7:45. some of the video that's coming at us out there from the el paso county area just incredible. flash flooding concerns, you can see cars submerged almost in the water. they had to do water rescues out there and we were also watching all this hail that

actually a plow truck got stuck because the hail was so thick in some places, just unream as we -- unreal as we wind down the month of august. 50s in eastern colorado, 30s and 40s in the mountains. the storm system stays still, starts to weaken by tomorrow and wednesday it pulls out of the region. we aren't done yet. showers and thunderstorms wind down by we'll have a dry beginning to the day, sunshine in the metro area and 4 or 5 p.m. like clockwork the showers and thunderstorms will be back and linger till about 10 or 11 p.m. tomorrow night. overall a mostly cloudy afternoon with a good chance at seeing those showers, thunderstorms, cooler than average for us in the 60s and 70s for the foothills, low 80s up in the i-25 corridor, northern colorado. this system pushes out and we look at temps in the mid- to upper 80s with a bit more
