>> hail and heavy rain trap people in colorado spring, danielle's forecast calls for a gradual drying out. >> with the new rules coming into place we've had a lot of customers waiting. >> businesses can now get a license to legally fly a drone. the rush is on. >> he took us to a world of pure imagination. we remember gene wilder. >> and the precursor to the rocky mountain showdown is anything but bad blood between cu and csu. the reason will 9news starts now. it is heart breaking to hear what happened to 2-year- old isaiah. even before you hear that police think his father injured him on purpose, intentionally left his son unbuckled in a car, then crashed it more than a week ago. isaiah survived. police say that his father 29- year-old nathan weitzel tried to kill his son in centennial. he admitted to police he did it

raise a child. he also said he used cocaine that day. neighbors who heard the crash ran into the street to help not knowing the back story. 9news reporter vicente arenas spoke to some of them today. >> neighbors say they saw a tangled mess and were even more horrified when they saw the father strike his bleeding child in that wrecked car. the people who live along south eudora way aren't used to the noise through their neighborhood sunday morning. >> i was in the backyard and heard a loud engine noise and crash. there was no screeching of brakes at all, just the crash. >> reporter: this is what cindy rosas saw in her neighbor's front yard. >> just horrifying, not knowing now it happened, why it happened, what's going on, is the child okay, is the driver okay? >> reporter: it was then she and her neighbors saw a 2-year- old boy in the car bleeding and crying. at first neighbors were

hitting the child. it looked like an elbow, elbow jab because the child was right about here in relation to the father and it was just horrifying. >> from what i understand like ran straight into their parked car. >> reporter: sam schulte lives a few doors down. >> it was troubling and very terrible. at that point it was like we got to get the kid out of the car. >> reporter: the boy named isaiah was in more trouble they realized. schulte and another man got to work. >> i pulled the door frame off and did as much as i could to create an opening and one of the other neighbors reached for the child and got him out of the car and hut him on the ground. >> reporter: schulte picked up isaiah and rubbed his back and held him hoping to calm him a bit. not until today did most neighbors hear police say a father was trying to kill husband own son.

severely hurt. it was only after they saw the deep gashes in his head that they knew little isaiah needed help fast. >> so he's in good hands now at the hospital and it's encouraging to hear that he was in good hands from the moment after that crash when those neighbors responded. >> at first they didn't know he was in the car, so they all ran up to the car and then they saw this kid in the back seat. then they saw him bleeding and you heard there they saw the father strike him, so just a terrible story from the star >> thank you. >> isaiah was released from children's hospital a few days ago. he'll be in a cast a while. his mother talked to us by phone. >> i don't understand why or how he could do something like this. but i'm hoping that isaiah recovers fast and that people

get better. >> the boy's parents are not married. isaiah's mother says she takes care of him during the week, but he spent weekends with his dad and the crash happened on a sunday. weitzel faces a list of charges that could add up to decades in prison. calm weather now across much of colorado compared to earlier. colorado springs saw hail and rain. flash flood warnings were in effect until 7:30 in el paso county and northeastern pueblo county. his vehicle there. the storms have fizzled out and are expected to pick up again tomorrow the same time in the afternoon. we won't see severe storms here, mostly just rain. a southwest flight headed to denver from albuquerque was delayed before takeoff tonight after someone noticed a suspicious item in the cabin. passengers were evacuated and the plane moved to a remote area at the edge of airport property. an airport spokesman didn't know what the item was but said

before 5:00 and departed over three hours late. denver police say a man arrested for assault on the high line canal this weekend could be connected to another attack the 25-year-old demarcus burkehart is accused of sawing a woman on friday. the woman took a -- of assaulting a woman on friday. the woman took a picture of him as he left. burkehart said he got into a dog tried to bite him. police say another assault happened on the trail about a week ago and said burkeheart could be connected to it. a teenager accused of a deadly hit and run only had a learners permit and was drag racing according to police. around 9:00 last night 26-year- old nicholas richling was crossing lowell when he was hit by a dodge caliber. witnesses had seen the caliber and a black sedan at a red

getting ready to race. police later arrested a 17-year- old boy from denver and booked him for investigation for vehicular homicide and hit and run. >> we simply want no. 1, good instruction while you are in the car. not only do you need to learn how to control the car but make wise decisions and not use poor judgment behind the wheel. >> police don't know if anyone else was in the teen-ager's car. colorado car requires a licensed driver over age 21 to be in the car with a driver who they're looking for the black sedan and the driver and ask anyone with information to call denver police. midnight tonight marks 70 days until election day. today we learned from colorado's elections director our state has the highest percentage of registered voters in the country, 86% in the 2014 elections. progressive group new era colorado focuses on registering young people, credits the state pore making registration more

ago to seven points. two brothers accused of shooting and killing a young mother are held without bail. the men are accused of shooting 32-year-old nikia aldridge, mother of four, who was dwyane wade's cousin. she was pushing her baby in her stroll are picking up -- stroller picking up her children from school when she got caught in the crossfire. the brothers were in court today for their first appearance on those charges. two united airlines pilots are free being accused of showing up drunk for a flight from scotland to new jersey. the veteran pilots are believed to be americans. they were taken into custody at glasgow airport saturday. the flight took off 10 hours late. faa rules prohibit the consumption of alcohol within eight hours of piloting a flight. thousands of business owners and employees were waiting for today. new rules for commercial drone

controlled aircraft. expect a line in colorado for people applying for licenses. 9news reporter victoria sanchez tells us about the rules and what it will take to put a drone to work. >> reporter: for something so hi-tech. >> using my no. 2 pencil and going through it. >> reporter: getting a commercial drone pilot's license starts out pretty basic. kerry garrison is one of the first in colorado to take the federal aviation administration's test to get certified to fly one of area if you're shooting footage with a drone and charging for it, do you have to have a license or is it just a hobby? >> reporter: as of monday, it's a gray area no more. if you want to use it for business, you have to follow the new rules. drones aren't new. the technology took off years ago, but regulations are finally catching up. >> there's kind of an envelope of rules that are now in place.

the range that you can visually see it. there is a number of things about not flying over people, for example. that's a biggy because things can go wrong and you don't want anyone to get hurt. no night flying is another one. >> reporter: until now commercial pilots could only fly legally with special faa permission. >> the faa doesn't have drone police. >> reporter: garrison who owns the multi copter warehouse in castle rock says while someone isn't looking over your drone's every move, if someone files there's an accident, the faa will investigate. >> if you're not certified, you don't have that license in hand, you could face penalties up to about $50,000. >> reporter: the new regulations don't pertain to the hobbyist like if you use yours to take video or pictures of your kids, but businesses need to get used to the new rules as the faa opens the skies for drones. kerry garrison took his test

registered to take their exam today nationwide. the faa estimates within one year the number of licensed drone pilots will exceed 170,000. >> that's a lot. thank you. after taking take lot of heat over a major price hike the company that sells epipens says it will launch a generic version sold for about $300. that's half the cost of the epipen. some pharmacists say they'll believe it when they see the price go down. lowering the price, but even at $300 it's still very expensive. >> mylan's generic auto injector will be identical to the brand name. pharmacists will be able to swap in the generic if doctors write a prescription. that generic is expected to launch in a few weeks. thousands of remembrances for actor and comedian gene wilder. his nephew said monday that he

involving diamonds stuffed in a bag. the united airlines employee named rafael mogana is accused of felony theft. he was supposed to be holding onto a jewelry case for a passenger from aspen. heed had onto it all right. he was caught on airport cameras taking diamond earrings, bracelets and other expensive shiny thing worth $129,000 and dumping them into a paper sack and skedaddling. when he was confronted, police a routine bridge inspection became a rescue in rhode island. two workers were in the bucket of the yellow truck when the vehicle tipped over against the guardrail. the bucket had a cage, so the workers were protected if they didn't fall out. the bridge was closed both directions while emergency teams rescued them. they were not hurt. they're still trying to find out why the truck tipped over. it's been a rainy 24 hours for southwestern parts of

yesterday taken along the ruby walls section known for the beautiful and kind of terrifying dropoff. january 2014 rock slides in that area forced cdot to close the pass a few months for repairs. that video came to us from silverton grocery. clearly folks who know how to drive the pass are familiar with it because at that point i'm like shut it down. shut down the video. >> pump the brakes, peace out, get they out of here. man, of us, i guess. today it was a wild one, snowfall at pikes peak, severe thunderstorms, hail, flooding rain 30 miles away in parts of colorado springs. around town light rain showers and that pushed out making way for a spectacular sunset, this awesome one with the corpuscular rays near loveland. it was warm, hit 84 at the airport, pretty seasonal for

ray, limon 70s, 58 in leadville, mid-60s in telluride and gunnison. at the airport 63, mostly cloudy skies. the winds have quieted down still coming out of the north, northeast around 7 miles per hour. in the 9news backyard our temperatures cooling off. we're sitting around 60 degrees heading toward the mid-50s overnight. the storm system has been a slow mover. it will slowly track across parts of southeastern colorado tomorrow once again with that counterclockwise flow pushing in up to the north and wrapping around right back here to the front range picking up on a little monsoon moisture, too. so it's a bit of a one-two- punch. tonight things are quieting down. you can see hardly any rain showers around here, a couple along i-76, keenesburg and toward lochbuie and downtown denver mostly cloudy skies and in el paso county things are winding down after a pretty wild afternoon. this was out there from our sister station. you can see all this hail

plow truck actually got stuck because there was so much hail measuring it in inches. similar setup at the summit at pikes peak. in fact, this was the shot, a winter wonderland tail end of the month of august, pretty wild. 56 our overnight low, storms pushing out, left with mostly cloudy skies and some folks along the eastern plains might wake up to a bit of patchy fog tomorrow morning. overnight lows 50s for us, 30s and 40s in the high country. there's that storm. it's really not going anywhere it finally starts to break down and move out just as warmer temperatures and drier conditions move in. once again we'll hit the repeat button as far as rain goes for tomorrow afternoon. this evening, overnight into tomorrow morning you can see mostly cloudy skies for eastern colorado. by 8 or 9 a.m. dry start to the day out to the western slope. that changes by early afternoon and evening as once again we watch those showers and thunderstorms pushing in from the northwest tracking south and west.

scattered showers, darker clouds and at 10:00 or 11:00 we could be watching that bull's eye south of the city. it looks like a similar setup compared to what we saw today. a little cooler by a couple degrees, 80 with that early morning fog. that should burn off a glimpse of sunshine to help warm us up a hair and then we'll watch those showers and thunderstorms pushing in i'm thinking around 3 or 4 p.m. we stay in the 80s across sterling and ray, 60s in frisco, close to 90 in junction. 64 in nederland and blackhawk tomorrow afternoon, low 80s in arvada, boulder, littleton, 81 in wellington and low 70s in estes park. light showers on tap tomorrow afternoon. this system finally starts pushing out by wednesday afternoon, still going to low in an isolated shower here and there, but temps start to warm un, mid- to upper 80s as we head toward the weekend and the weekend not looking all that bad. a taste of colorado going on as

kind of a stormy start to the workweek, scattered showers and thunderstorms pushing into the metro area, northern colorado and really hammered colorado spring with the hail and flooding rains and snowfall in the mountains, kind of a taste of all the seasons. 80s on tap tomorrow, a coup degrees cooler for, similar setup across the eastern plains, too, 60s and 70s in the mountains and close to 90 to the west. foothills in the 60s and is. s. it will -- and arvada and littleton and we'll watch temperatures cooling to the 60s and 70s in the high country areas. the next couple days we'll be watching the showers like clockwork, wednesday afternoon not quite as bad and we head toward the holiday weekend and it's looking pretty good. can't completely ruling out seeing one or two saturday afternoon, storms, but look at that, labor day not too shabby, close to 80 degrees, lots of sun balls.
