two years ago, an officer nearly lost his life. today, he's ready to get back to work and help others in more way than one. a serious e-mail threat closes doors at government agencies in several states. the colorado location affected today. >> i ran home to check my account, and, um, realize monday was missing from my account, and a lightbulb went off that sog yeah, criminals are stealing billions of dollars without needing to ever see their victims. we'll talk about how they're targeting account through atms. we start with breaking news this morning. police are looking for whoever stole an suv, crashed into a nearby home, and ran from the scene. this is happening in edge water in the area near to the and fenton. edge water officers heard seven gunshots and officers heard a crash. people are told to stay in

the suspect. reverse 911 calls went out to warn people of this. police found a gun outside this car. it is a ford car. the ford was stolen from 35th and gray in wheatridge. we're not sure of the time it was stolen and a gun was stolen at 35th and gray. this is all breaking news. we have a crew on the way. nelson garcia son the way. we're working on getting more information and as soon the rain and hail hit denver boulder and metro area hard along the 25 corridor last night and after the storm moved out, standing water stuck around on the highways and streets. this is the intersection or a section of 36 near federal, totally flooded. a viewer name start sent us video of the roads around parker and said cars are dying here. some storm in the state were strong enough to trigger some flash flood warnings. the good news, though today we

what we all saw, destruction, and an injured officer. on that day, denver officer john ahtsett almost died while looking at a protest. he is help other officers now. nelson garcia is joining us at the denver police academy with more. >> reporter: the denver police department asked us not todays clothe where adset 7:00 a.m. to start his shift and restart his police leaf. he easily could have died that day and calls his recovery a miracle. doctors had to remove his spleen and he had endured several broken bones.

booker had a seizure behind the wheel, leading to the crash. >> it's almost 5:36 now. there will be extra security as the usda office in fort collins and several other states reopen. they cleveland a serious threats against employees at the agency. an employee is not sharing specifics but said office in colorado, maryland, north carolina, west virginia will all get back to work today. more than 1,000 people from several government agencies work at the near colorado state university. lafayette police are looking for a man and a woman right now after they say the couple held two kids at gunpoint to get money from their mom. this is surveillance video from monday showing a man and woman who police think are the robbers be the fair forced the mother to drive to a bank and her own home to get money while pointing a gun at her 8-year- old daughter and 4-year-old son. police said then they led her and her children to.

he now says he would work with them and focus on deporting criminals. in today's speech, he's expected to compare his policy to hillary clinton's, which he said would be complete amnesty for undocumented immigrants. the democrats want the fbi to look at trump's campaign. they think he may have had a hand in the recent hack of a democratic party computer. the breach was traced back to hackers in russia. four leading house democrats say trump aides have close ties to russia. after the hack exposing favoritism for clinton and against sanders. today, hillary clinton will be in the battle ground state of ohio, addressing the american legions convention in cincinnati, where she's expected to stress the idea of american exceptionalism. she's also expected to continue questioning donald trump's leadership abilities. she has said that trump indicated he would walk away from our allies, undermine our

it just might be one of the biggest thefts in history. criminal have stolen $3 billion worldwide and had to do it slowly over time. tarhonda thomas is on the "consumer reports" beat with a look at what is being skimmed off your account at the atm. >> reporter: skimming cards at atms is clearly illegal and lucrative. crooks have made off with as much as $3 billion worldwide because the use is five times higher than 2014 or 2515.

"consumer reports" has important advice. one trip to the wrong atm cost mary a lot of money. she found out when her debit card was reject at gas station. >> i ran home to check my account and realized money was missing from my account and something weird happened. >> reporter: police showed us the hardware installed, a skimmer to copy credit card information, and a tiny camera r >> most commonly they remove device and then use the information to create a duplicate table card they can use to drain your account. >> reporter: covering the pinbad is one way to thwart the scheme but thieves use another skimming device that does not use a camera at all. it's a fake card reader that fits right over the real one. first it reads your card information and then when you type your pin -- >> your pin number is extracted

double sided tape so if you can tug it loose, don't use it, and report it to management. >> reporter: this is another type of skimmer but you wouldn't be able to spite as it's placed deep inside a gas pump. atms are being compromised by devices called deep-insert skimmers that can't be detected from the outside but steal your information just the same. >> bad guys will insert a skimmer way into the mouth of the atm so you will never see it. >> reporter: chip cards with their features are safer to use but only if just the chip end is inserted. one of the best things to do is monitor your bank account online for suspicious activity and if something concerns you contact your bank or credit card fraud department. we can tell you the woman you saw in the story, mary, reported activity and got all her money back. on the consumer beat, tarhonda thomas, 9news. >> augending to the story. >> frightening, though.

billows of smoke filled this area in nevada after a plane burst into flames near reno. investigators are trying to find out who was on board. it went down in a trailer park. a lot of people saw it happened. it was l plane sputter, go down, and explode. no one in that neighborhood was injured, thankfully. fishing on the high seas can be a dangerous profession and if something bad does happen, getting to help is not easy. the man in this video know that firsthand. he was rescued by the coast guard after being impaled. he was working on a lobster boat near the cape cod coast. when rescuers dropped the basket to safety so he could be taken to the hospital.

we begin with breaking news near edgewater. residents of 20th avenue and fenton received reverse 911 calls with a stolen car at police said residents heard five gunshots five block from here at 25th and fenton. while they were with responding to the scene, officers heard a car crash at 20th and fenton street and crashed and there is a broken fence. there was a black ford excurse
