states. overnight hurricane hermine slammed into florida's panhandle packing winds of up to 80 miles an hour. this morning storm surge and the possibility of isolated tornadoes even as hermine is downgraded to a tropical storm. >> this is life-threatening. >> we're going to lose the power line here. >> the system knocking out power to entens of thousands and floo n florida's gulf coast. near apalachicola there were mandatory evacuations despite the risk rex and cindy whiteman chose to stay and ride out the storm. >> we've done everything we can to prepare and it's too hard to pack up and leave and this is home. >> reporter: the last hurricane to strike florida was wilma in 2005, a powerful category 3 storm that killed five people. today the threat from hermine

carolina under a state of emergency, dangerous rip currents. >> we're always worried. sure. but you do what you can do and hope for the best. >> reporter: again, hermine is weakening as it is downgraded to a tropical storm. authorities here in florida are now assessing the damage as other states brace for impact. matt and savannah. >> gabe, thanks a lot. let's find out where the storm is headed from here and al is over at the weather wall tracking the latest path. good morning. >> good morning. let's look live right now, st. simons, georgia, st. simons island, georgia, the storm has moved into southern georgia, the core of it, but you can see the effects right now, the winds are howling, the waves have come up and the rain is getting stronger and stronger there as well. look at the scope of this system right now, you can see the rain bands, we have tornado watches stretching from western florida

system is. hermine is 50 miles northeast of tallahassee,.0 mile per hour winds, moving north-northeast at 14 miles per hour. the path of this system right now looks like this, we will see it continue inland through saturday afternoon. it comes off somewhere along the cape, right around saturday afternoon, 45 miles per hour. here is the rest of the track, though, we're going to be talking about this system into the middle of next week. it comes out to the new jersey/new york shoreline. 60 mile per hour winds, it's just below tropical strength system, but we are going to be looking at winds, rain, coastal beach erosion right into next week. storm surges today, the big bend area of florida 2 to 4 feet around tampa and southeastern atlantic coast georgia to north carolina 1 to 3 foot surges. we also have a risk of tornadoes stretching from the carolinas

have also got the risk of a lot of power outages, 12 million people at risk to lose power from florida all the way into the carolinas and of course the rainfall, going to be a big issue we're talking about some areas picking up 5 to 10 inches of rain from georgia into southeastern virginia but the eastern carolinas, guys, could see rainfall 10 to 15 inches, rip currents are going to be a big problem up and down the eastern seaboard, right until mondaynd big problem because this system will sit offshore into wednesday. >> al, we will catch up with you more in a bit. >> doesn't it come at just the wrong time, people trying to squeeze the last weekend out of the summer going on vacation. a lot of concerns over rip currents, beaches closed up and down the east coast. let's go to morgan rat ford at any point pleasant beach in new jersey. >> reporter: things are looking pretty calm here right now along

in fact, we are expecting a double whammie to hit this weekend, you can see these red flags behind me and this is here at any point pleasant beach. all along the coast where authorities are asking swimmers not to get in the water. they are also creating sand barriers along the coastline and here in point pleasant they are draining the lake and that's just to keep the streets from fl flooding. i want to show you this map, you can see the red arrows from where you have to be extra careful if you are planning on getting into the water this holiday weekend. 36 people have already been rescued this week alone in this region and this is the same region that was devastated by superstorm sandy back in 2012, that's why people here are saying they are taking no chances this holiday weekend. matt. >> morgan, thank you very much. >> and now to another big story, a major set back for spacex

this is a commercial space company that nasa has turned to for cargo and future manned missions, but this particular rocket was on a facebook mission. tom costello covers all things space for us. tom, good morning. >> reporter: this is a significant set back not just for spacex but for facebook. this was going to be a satellite inside this unmanned falcon 9 rocket that would beam internet access to africa. both companies are looking for answers and trying to a jaw dropping sight, a spacex rocket exploding on the launch pad thursday. the massive fireball swallowing it whole in a matter of seconds. a series of explosions and massive plumes of thick billowing smoke. the blast could be heard and felt for miles, even caught on weather radar. urgency on police dispatch radio. >> there's a rocket segment that blew up.

plume heading out towards the beach. >> temporarily closing down the beach. >> reporter: amazingly no one was injured during this routine test gone bad, but the unmanned rocket was destroyed along with a special satellite, it's mission to help facebook bring the internet to parts of africa. ceo mark zuckerberg saying he is deeply disappointed but will keep working until everyone has the opportunities this satellite would have provided. the actual launch was scheduled for saturday elon musk says the cause still unknown. as spacex investigates what went wrong. the blast caused major damage to the spacex launch pad at cape canaveral, that could seriously impact the satellite launch schedule. this is a concern because this is the same type of rocket that will be used on future manned missions. so finding out what went wrong will be a very high priority. guys, back to you.

let us turn to politics as donald trump heads from ohio to new york for a classified briefing from u.s. intelligence officials today. replacing him in that battle ground state is the vice president joe biden who is there stumping for hillary clinton. taking trump to task on a wide range of issues. nbc's hallie jackson has the latest on the race for the white house. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. after that second intelligence briefing in a very windy manhattan here donald trump will focus on driving his message to reaching out to african-american voters in philadelphia before that trip to detroit to a black church over the weekend, but that trip is raising eyebrows with word it is scripted, all of it, as trumpl seems to shift on immigration yet again a kump days after his tough talk, a softer tone. his new overtures now under fire as donald trump promises he can help african-american voters. >> give it to me. i'm going to fix it.

is released from jail today having served just half of a six-month sentence for sexual assaulting an unconscious woman on campus. nbc's gaddy schwartz has more on that including an exclusive first look at photos from the night of the arrest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. brock turner was eligible for release after midnight but it is most likely that he will be released at a daylight, first daylight here on the west coast just like everybody else and now that hil getting our first look at photographs of brock turner that were used as evidence in this case. exclusive pictures of brock turner obtained by nbc news show the former university swimmer disheveled, his shirt torn after being tackled by two college students who saw him on top of his unconscious victim. these pictures taken four hours after turner was arrested for sexual assaulting an unconscious female by a dumpster on

interrogation we were allowed to review a detective questions turner about the victim, asking, if you saw her again would you recognize her? turner responds, uh, probably not. er responds, probably not. later in the tape turner says my intentions were not to try to rape a girl without her consent. i was just trying to hook up with a girl. after being asked if he knew where he and the victim were at the time of the incident turner simply says we were so drunk we didn't even know what we were on or where we were by. turner faced up to 14 years in but the judge sentenced turner to six months, which in california means three months for good behavior. the sentence caused a national fire firestorm. over 2 million people coming out in support of the victim signing petitions to remove the judge from the bench. since then the judge has recused himself from criminal cases but has launched his own campaign to keep his position with a review a detective questions we asking for donations for his

i have to be honest, my daughter, courtney, who food styled this, i said i would really use about a pound but that's just me. you're going to saute this. you're going to render the fat out until it gets fairly crispy but not too crispy and then it here because you have the fat. take sliced up onions, pepper, rosemary, oregano and saute this until it's translucent. not brown but on the translucent side. you'll cook that down and saute it until it cooks up nice. >> back up the bacon truck. >> we'll take a dozen eggs.
