i-70 and lookout mountain. we know how backed up it was yesterday. we want to get back to that breaking news. the "associated press" has an earthquake felt from central texas to north dakota. it was a 5.6 magnitude earthquake centered northwest of pawnee, oklahoma. >> people in kansas missouri, norman, oklahoma, texas even reported feeling tremors resulting from the earthquake after 6:00 our time this morning. we have seen tweets from dallas saying they have felt tremors there. on to tropical storm hermine. she is bringing strong winds and heavy rain as it moves through north carolina and virginia this morning. forecasters predict it could

morning. vida urbonas has more from the information center. >> reporter: good morning. after slamming florida as a category 1 hurricane, hermine now downgraded to a tropical storm. there are tropical storm watches and warnings in place along the eastern seaboard from georgia to connecticut. heavy rain, flash floods, dangerous winds and rip currents expected to pose serious threats in the next fe mile-per-hour winds crossed through st. marks. the storm surge of nine feet covered 22 inches of rain, left streets and homes flooded. the weather's channel reynolds wolf was there during the worst of it. >> unbelievable. look at this stuff! >> reporter: from tampa bay to tall has is i, more -- tallahassee, more than a

you think we can expect to have that mix of clouds and sun as we go throughout your saturday. but that's not going to get in the way of the temperatures warming up. by 3:00 our temperatures will be in the upper 80s. around 7 p.m. a little breezy. temperatures will be -- i am expecting for storms to be between 3 to 7 p.m. in the city. temperatures are nice. this is a nice way to start off your saturday. it's chillier closer to mountains. check out the afternoon mountains. aye-yai-yai. highs in the mid-to-upper 80s on i-25 and on the eastern plains close to 90 degrees. 70s closer to the foothills. doppler 9 this morning showing a bit of lightning. possibly hearing that thunder if you are of you live near the western slope. the potential for more slopes this afternoon along i-25 and a chance for storms to turn severe on the eastern plains. i will time them for you coming

keeping traffic flowing even when there is an accident. there is a new incident management team in the high country that will work to make sure police, firefighters, and tow trucks are working together. >> when we started getting the backups and we have got these cues, drivers that are unaware can drive right into the back of these cues and that's when we have more problems. >> each of the command team that will be used to push damaged vehicles to the side of the road as soon as possible to get traffic flowing again on a busy i-70. this morning a douglas county sheriff's detective is recovering in critical condition after a shootout in parker. police say it started with a call about a suicidal man walking around with a rifle yesterday. the man started shooting at

he drove away in an rv. there was a chase. it came to a crashing stop a half mile away outside parker adventist hospital. the suspect was shot and killed there. a surreal experience for parents who waited in fear. students were told to hide under their desks. >> you hear about this on the news, about these schools and these shootings. until you experience it yourself with your own child, it doesn't resonate. >> detective brite is now out of surgery and continuing to recover. it's an intersection that now reminds a family of a 14- year-old boy they lost to a drunk driver in july. cole sukle, his family dedicated a sign in his honor at the intersection of yale and madison. that is where an 81-year-old woman hit and killed sukle in july. she had a blood alcohol level

teachers attended the sign dedication on friday. they say he was a positive person and light in their community. >> this sign is going to friend you of a friend. it's going to remind you of somebody we lost. but also hopefully it will have that message to somebody to low down, not look at their cell phone, and never drink and drive. >> an rt the 81-year-old woman who hit cole was injured herself and died days after. prosecutors dropped sexual assault charges in a separate case against a man. jeffrey beier was arrested after his girlfriend was reported missing by her family.

suspect in voight's disappearance. the d.a. says it's become factually intertwined with an ongoing missing persons decision. we have much more on 9news.com. it took four years for sandy hook elementary to tear down the bullet ridden school and create a new safer learning environment. on the first day of class somebody thought it would newton police tracked the man down. police have not shared what specifically he said but he face charges of harassment and investigators are looking into whether he has done this to other schools. it's a case that sparked a debate over how those convicted of sexual assault should be punished. people are now calling for a judge to resign after a college student who sexual assaulted a woman was released from jam.

his sentence. he was let out on good behavior. nbc was given exclusive access to evidence from that case that includes pictures showing turner with a torn shirt hours after the former stanford university swim he was tackled by students who saw him assaulting a woman behind a dumpster. >> i stole a purse from a mall and i got more time than he did. >> interrogation tapes show intentions were not to try to rape a girl without her consent. i just trying to hook one a girl. when asked if he would remember the victim, he said probably not. he will be listed as a sex offender for life. colorado state fans, students and alumni not waking up too happy this morning. rocky mountain showdown between the buffs and rams not much of a showdown at all.

people are expected during labor day weekend. we will talk with one of the representatives to see what you can expect when you come out here. it's going to be warmer. highs in the upper 80s. our normal for this time of year is 83 degrees. so, yeah, you know, it's still going to feel like summer. summer's not offer. skies will be partly cloudy and a chance for storms this afternoon. highs for today are going to be in the mid-to-upper 80s along i- 25. if ar colorado state fair the temperatures are going to be sizzling. aye-yai-yai. 90s out there. in the high country 60s and 70s. the western slope 80 degrees. right now it's comfortable. in the high country a bit chillier in spots where we have 40s this morning. the western slope 67 degrees. let's take it to futurecast. we have some areas of patchy fog in the east and low clouds. those will be lifting through lunchtime. around that time it's going to be warm, but we will have those

so we are going to be scattered as the afternoon rolls on. those storms will push to the northeast, eventually working their way off of the foothills and onto i-25. through 5 p.m. we could have isolated storms around town. late this afternoon and early this evening as the storms move into northeastern colorado, well, that's where they have the potential becoming severe. i am talking about large hail, strong winds, heavy rain, frequent lightning through about 10:00 p.m. that stormy weather is done for then overnight we are left over with those mostly cloudy conditions. temperatures in the high country overnight in some spots do drop into the 30s. as far as the rain forecast goes through tomorrow, those heavier pockets of rain will be in the northwestern part of the state and also out towards the eastern plains. so it looks like here in the city, with we get any rain. we will be lucky. northern colorado .02-inch of rain. 59 the overnight lows. skies partly cloudy.

good morning from sports authority field. you know, it is a rivalry of that had been closed. the 2016 edition of the rocky mountain showdown was more of a rocky mountain beatdown. all colorado all of the time, and i do mean all of already 7-0 in the first quarter when liufau connected with devin ross. 18-yard touchdown. 14-0 buffs in the first. colorado state had nothing on offense. nick stevens started at quarterback and couldn't move the ball at all. sacked by jimmy gilbert. the fumble recovered. that led to a field goal that made it 24-0. second quarter

coloradans are celebrating in the high country. traffic backed up for hours on i-70 last night. a lot of controversy surrounding colin kaepernick's refusal to stand up for the national anthem. why his decision is posing a problem when it comes to security. nine days after an earthquake in italy, rescuers found an amazing discovery. a farm animal decided it was time to make a run and more powerhouses go head to head in friday night light high school. we will check in with taylor temably later in the prep -- taylor temby later in the prep rally. a 5.6 magnitude earthquake hit pawnee, oklahoma at 6:02 our time this morning. >> we have seen tweets from our sister station in dallas saying

dakota. meteorologists were saying the radius for the tremors of this earthquake surrounded around 750 miles. so a lot of people felt this and are requesting exactly what happened this morning. we are told this earthquake lasted for right around 1 minute 30 seconds. >> that's a long one. >> yeah. >> it makes a lot of people pay attention to what's going on. and it's all on social media right now. the tweets started coming in. this is a meteorologist -- was a meteorologist in damage there. an earthquake strong enough to walk print all of my wall from the 9th floor of a high-rise. this shows a large portion of the midwest felt that magnitude 5.2 quake this morning. there is some damage being reported. there you are. that brick building, you can see a chunk of it fell off. >> a crack on the side of a

earthquake marks this as tied with 2007 for the strongest earthquake in that state's history. certainly significant. we have not heard of any injuries so far. >> please keep tuning in with us both here and on our twitter feeds. we are finding a lot of good stuff about what's happening there. for now let's move on to tropical storm hermine. the tropical storm dropped steady rain on the north carolina coast overnight. a lot of rain there. >> oh, yeah. which means it's going to be a tough labor day weekend for some of those folks carolinas. the biggest concern today is the potential for dangerous flooding in the virginia tidewater area. hermine is continuing to make its way offshore. experts fear this could mean even more coastal flooding and strong winds not only in virginia, but parts of the east coast. several homes in florida have already been damaged. 7:34. happy start to your labor day weekend. if you have no barbecue plans from store, there is plenty at

it's happening at civic center park in denver. meteorologist belen belen is there as everybody is getting set up. >> reporter: you said it. our forecast for today is going to be really nice if you want to barbecue, if you want to hang by the pool. we are going to be warmer. highs in the mid-to-upper 80s. yeah, even know labor day signals the end of summer, no. mother nature says, huh-uh. our highs today are going to be way above normal. let's take a look at your taste of colorado forecast because everything ki the forecast around 11 calls for temperatures at 80 degrees with sunny skies. 3:00 it's 88 degrees. and from 3 to 7 p.m. a few isolated storms along the urban corridor. by 7:00 i think a little breezy with temperatures at 80 degrees as boyz ii men prepares to take the stage. the temperatures right now, they are mild. we have got 50s and 60s on the map in lower elevations. a little chillier for areas in the foothills and in the high country your afternoon highs are going to be warmer than yesterday.

to an hour. in the high country this morning we are seeing a steady flow of traffic heading up to the high country today. those folks who just said, nah, friday night's not gonna work, everyone needs to come back by sunday. the peak times according to cdot will be by sunday night. in world news this morning, the president of the philippines inspected the scene of a people and hurt dozens of others. an islamic group took responsibility for the attack. the president declared a state of lawlessness for the southern region where it took place. the blast tore through a street market outside a high-end hotel. the president was in the city at the time but he was not hurt. president obama has arrived in china to attend the g-20 summit of major world leaders. air force one landed at the

the union sent the 49ers a letter saying they are really upset over kaepernick's blanket statements about how officers, quote, murder minorities. the union argues this is creating a hostile work environment for the police who were at the stadium. the 49ers say it respects kaepernick's right to freedom of expression. you have seen those stories right here on weekend mornings. we are talking about cats adopting squirrels. you know, like mama cat taking story. >> of course you will. you will remember this one because now a dog has adopted orphan piglets. >> linda the dog has helped nurse the pigs after the at their mother. >> aw. >> the owner of the dog and piglets came up with the idea after he remembered linda had given birth to the pups. people had come from all over to see the dog who adopted the piglets. quite an interesting attraction. the dog's owner says she is

if you come out here. we have already got the grill on, the stove top on. here is what i'm cooking farther the weather goes. temperatures will be warmer. highs in the mid-to-upper 80s. we are going to have partly cloudy skies. but this afternoon we will have to keep an eye to the sky with an opportunity to see a few storms across colorado. scattered in the mountains. eventually isolated in the metro area. some of those storms could turn severe on the eastern plains. your temperatures this afternoon as we're starting off your weekend highs will be in the mid-to-upper 80s from fort collins into denver. if you are headed south to the colorado state fair temperatures will be in the 90s down there. aye-yai-yai. on the eastern plains highs in the upper 80s. cooler in the high country. 70s and 60s. and the western slope a high of 80 degrees. here's where we are at right now. feels really nice outside. in some spots in the high country you are going to need that jacket when you are headed out the door. 40s out there. the western slope currently temperatures in the upper 60s. although we have clouds and areas of patchy fog out on the eastern plains, that is going

we are looking at a fantastic forecast for you to go on a bike ride, go on a motorcycle, put the convertible top down. in the high country a few storms developing towards the san juans. those storms will be pushing from the southwest to the northeast, and i think the timing for the storms here in the metro area will be anywhere between 3 to about 7 p.m. after that the storms wrap up for us and they start working their way into northeast colorado, and it's there where they could turn severe. large hail, damaging winds, heavy rain, nt all in the cards if you live in northeastern colorado-and the eastern plains. overnight skies are partly cloudy for us and then areas of patchy fog could develop. let's take a look at the rain forecast because the heaviest amount of rain is expected to fall in our northern mountains. thank goodness. we need rain out there. also some heavier pockets of rain along the nebraska- colorado border into northeast colorado and on the eastern plains. temperatures tonight 59 degrees. we will have some storms on the

back to you. >> belen, you know you are supposed to bring stuff back, right? that's the protocol here. >> tell the chef the catering is to be delivered to 500 spear. 7:47 on your saturday. this is an unusual case where a goat helped a pair of horses get loose. this happened in clydesdale. the horses have been reunited with their owner after a billly goat straight up opened their gate and let them out. >> the goat sir lancelot helping the out. the goat is known as lance, for short. he teamed up with the clydesdales, banged his head against the gate to loosen the latch and set them free. it took five days to find buddy. both horses home save and everybody is mad at lancelot. >> i get lancelot where everybody's parents are like, don't hang out with that kids. >> that's what my parents say

8:06 on your saturday. this morning a douglas county sheriff's detective is recovering in critical condition after a shootout in parker. police say this started with a call about a suicidal man with a rifle walking around near sierra middle school. investigators say the man started shooting at detective dan brite when he got to the scene. he drove off. the suspect did, in an rv. there was a chase. he crashed a half a mile away outside of killed. the school was placed on lockdown. a surreal experience for parents who were waiting in fear as students say they were told to hide under their desks. >> you hear about this on the news, of all these other schools and shootings, and until you experience it yourself with your own child, it doesn't resonate. >> other parents were hearing that their students were told to stay down while teachers were guarding the doors with

continuing to recover. it's a case that sparked a debate over how those convicted of sexual assault should be punished. people are now calling for a judge to resign after a college student who sexual assaulted a woman was released from jail. brock turner only served half of his sentence. he was let out on good behavior. nbc was given exclusive access to evidence in his case. it includes pictures showing turner with a torn shirt. this is hours after the former stanford university swimmer was tackled by students who saw dumpster. one inmate fresh out of jail offered his perspective. >> i stole a purse from a mall and i got more time than he did. >> certainly raises questions. interrogation tapes show turner saying, quote, my intentions were not to try to rape a girl without her consent. i was just trying to hook up with a girl. when asked if he would remember the victim, he said probably not. he will be listed as a sex offender for life.

a possibility for some storms along i-25 and some of those storms out on the eastern plains could turn severe. highs on this saturday, take a look at them. it's going to get toasty to the south and southeast where the temperatures will be in the 90s. in the mountains temperatures in the 60s and 70s. outside right now, it's so nice. we got 50s and 60s on the map. in the high country a bit cooler as to be expected. the western slope 67 degrees right now. we are going to take you h we have clouds, areas of patchy fog, but that's going to be lifting soon. in fact, by lunch time a few storms in the san juans. those storms will be traveling from the southwest to the northeast and i think the timing for the storms here in the city will be between 3 to about 7 p.m. after that those storms will be out on the eastern plains. and when those storms move in that area, that's where they could become severe. large hail, damaging winds, also some heavy rain and frequent lightning.
