and about. rocky peeler great little rain shaft we picked up during the day. seeing some color up there. we're on our way to our usual third week of september peak of fall color here. you're already seeing that 15% to 20% change in a lot of locations. temperatures now in the 50s and 60s here. we have had the storms in southern colorado continuing. we're getting some moisture off of hurricane newton which is right now moving through cabo san lucas. thunderstorms in southeastern colorado have broken up. they're weakening dramatically in the last 20 to 30 minutes. they continue in and around lake city and creed with some heavy rain and lightning in a few locations. for us today 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. moderate to heavy thunderstorms in the area. transitioning to the north and east through the night tonight. we could have some severe weather and heavy rain around here today.

storms through the late afternoon and early part of the evening. today's the day amelia you want to have your 9 news map and that interactive radar handy. as we get outside today what a pretty sunrise. views from sky 9 but now unfortunately we're looking down at a new crash. this is i-70 right around havana. it looks like this is going to be moving through in the westbound lanes of traffic at the denver mattress there off to the right blocked up. one lane getting through. you're still able to get off the highway drive but the backups are going to build up quickly. eastbound traffic is okay for now but we're going to watch that delay build. we'll talk about this crash and your travel times throughout the morning. sunrise will come at 6:33 in the meantime check out these colors out to the east. we're looking at a beautiful view there near i-77.

today. out towards lieman looking different. former el paso county sheriff terry mckeed is going to be %ed today. makeeda resigned in 2014 accused on allegations of affairs with multiple subordinates in his department. the first official court appearance today. >> came about 17 months after he resigned. former under sheriff paulo cressly and former sheriff's commander juan augustine. back in may makeeta and presley faced felony charges.

of kidnapping and false imprisonment. korey we are going to be following this closely. the starwood fire burning near red feth lakes is now 35% contained. officials say they've contacted 43 people for a voluntary evacuation. there are around 30 homes in the area some thought to be vacation properties. >> at this point we're believing that the fir pretty good shape with the fire. if there is -- if the weather patterns change and it becomes hotter, drier, and windier and the fire does move, the number of evacuations may increase. >> about 120 firefighters spent labor day trying to get ahold of this fire. the lambert county sheriff's office is asking drivers to stay off the roads in that area to clear the way for emergency traffic.

meanwhile she's got her supporters. yesterday clinton hit both ohio and illinois and while she was coughing and losing her voice she says donald trump is the one who choked during his trip to mexico. clinton called the meeting with mexico's president an embarrassment. donald trump is headed to virginia and north carolina today. he met with several groups in ohio yesterday to talk trade among other thing explain his immigration policy. he also revealed he's not doing any mock debates or cramming for any upcoming debates with clinton. hillary clinton meanwhile is planning an ad campaign for tens of millions of dollars. but there's one place she's not buying ads. colorado. >> yeah, i think people will

>> and he says that might be one of his strengths he's sympathying and that's why he doesn't want to overprepare. clinton has been going through a lot of motions and practices and mock debates. it's anybody's guess how this is going to go. let's check in with amelia. there's a bad accident she's got to tell us about. >> north of 104th avenue and sky 9 is overhead. this looks to be crash. all lanes of i-25 are shut down. you can see right across the highway we really don't know much about injuries yet. this crash just occurred. emergency crews here and with all lanes closed down a lot of people are stuck behind this crash with really no exit from the highway drive. if you are going to plan an alternate you can use washington

please plan ahead. out to our maps we go and our c-dot cameras. two lanes are blocked westbound leading up to havana. there's a crash with multiple cars involved. the backups are going to go all the way back towards the 225 interchange. here's a look at where that crash sits. 47 minutes from 225 continuing right over to the i-70 split at the mouse trap. tough, marty, with the 47 and i-70 involved. thunderstorms going in the san juans and into southeastern colorado. some of the moisture's being spun off hurricane newton which is right now making landfall near cabo san lucas. we also have higher humidity levels here because of a cold front that has come through the area. burn off briefly for the early

after 4:00 today especially about 4:00 to 7:00 i see a few areas of thunderstorms here and we could see some severe weather in the storms today. pockets of moderate to heavy rain here getting progressively stronger as it moves to the north and east. it's going to be a really bumpy day from here in the front range out to the northeast. 70s, 80s here today about 10 degrees cooler than yesterday. thunderstorms take a little break mid morning. we do have them g now. kick up again this evening and they'll be going midnight or later over the northeastern plains with moderate to heavy rain starting here in the front range and intensifying over the plains. we do have a severe weather risk from right here in the denver, boulder area up to fort collins greeley. much warmer down south.

6:18 right now and battled comedian bill cosby returns to court today in the hearing in the sexual assault case against him. his lawyers are fighting to keep key evidence out of the trial including almost 1000 pages of testimony that he gave in a lawsuit against him from one they argued he was promised he would never be charged. earlier this year a judge found he was never granted immunity. in attempt at revenge against an ex-boyfriend will land this woman in a courtroom. security videos shows carmen

egging someone's property isn't just a prank it's a crime. a man in ohio says he egged his neighbor's home dozens of times over the course of a year and today he's going to find out his punishment. jason cozan will be sentenced less than a week. he spent a year vandalizing a neighbor's home by throwing eggs at it. police still don't know why he did it. to form naturally and in less than a minute somebody destroyed it. police in oregon are searching for the group of people who knocked over an iconic rock formation on pacific city beach. cellphone video shows the group pushing what's been dubbed the duck bill. >> that is horrible. things are starting to get back to normal across the country after a glitch caused

football in the 9 news back yard. first amelia a terrible mess on i-25 this morning. >> just a horrific crash here, cheryl. due to a rollover crash there are multiple emergency crews who have already responded to this reck. so many cars involved and the backups are already going back up to the i-70 interchange as we take a look at the backups here he have an alternate route for you to get around these delays. if it does convert to a full blown accident investigation the highway could be closed down for at least an hour or more. northbound washington or northbound huron you can access those alternates by exiting on thornton highway. a great holiday weekend. a beautiful picture posted to

this is 9 news. we begin this morning with breaking news at 6:30. i-25 in the northbound direction is completely shut down at 104th avenue due to a major rollover accident. we are taking a live look here from sky 9 blocking lanes to force folks off there as they turn around. but the accident incredible to look at here. and another truck has spun out. several police crews are on scene. fire crews. multiple ambulance. we're waiting to hear the condition of the people involved in this crash. but if it does translate into an accident investigation northbound 25 could be closed for hours. all traffic is now blocked and

parkway. i do have a couple of suggestions for you as you leave the denver metro area. along i-25 those will load up quickly. 287 along federal. e470 out to the east or connecting to the east. this is going to affect thousands of drivers coming out from both sides because even the southbound stretch of 25. >> that is a okay. we'll check back with you on that. but be aware on the north side there's going to be a problem for awhile. mother nature gave us a perfect labor day. marty joins us from the back yard. marty, gorgeous day today. >> we're going to be stormy to finish up the day today. we have clouds that will be breaking up in the next few

we've had some thunderstorms in the southeast corner of the state. so it's cloudy here and that will remain so between 9:00 and 10:00. we'll begin to break things up to heat things up to keep the storms going. southwestern colorado several areas of thunderstorms continue to go from the silverton area into northeastern durango. 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. today looks like some moderate to heavy thunderstorms possible right here on the front range spreading north and east over the plains. locally heavy downpours and strong winds all possible in these storms today. we are in a risk from severe weather here east of colorado spreading out over the plains. our biggest threat in that 4:00 to 7:00 time frame.

news, cbs, and abc. more than a $1000 a second. hillary clinton spent big bucks on campaign ads in colorado in june and july. her campaign spent $350,000 on more than 300 spots on 9 news. right now she doesn't have any air time purchases filed with the fcc in our area. we'll see if that changes and if the rate gets tighter. colorado is known to be a battle ground state so we might be dealing with candidates right up until election day. >> so it's going to be awhile. don chooed l is back in the mile high city campaigning for hoirnl. the actor, writer, and producer will travel across the metro today. meeting with volunteers and supporters spreading the word about clinton's plan. donald trump supporters in ohio are building support and raising

republican leaders in canfield have set up a board at the local fair. people can buy fake bricks write a message and then glue them together to build a wall. the party's meant to show their support of trump's plan to build a wall. >> i think it's disgraceful. this is not what i grew up around. i don't agree with any of these principles. this is breeding hate. >> this is about national cu it's about keeping drugs from coming into the country. it's about preventing persons who are not permitted into this country to come into this country. what is hateful about that? >> the group says it's so popular the wall has already been built and disassembled three times. it is 6:35 right now president obama is making history this week.

he plans to spend $90 million to help the country clean up unexploded bombs left behind from the vietnam war. for nine years america bombed that country in an effort to cut off communist forces in vietnam. president detarta regrets making vulgar remarks about the president. he made the remarks be summit there. now president obama has put a plan one on one meeting with him on hold. two people riding a motorcycle died after getting hit by a mini van in aurora. police tell us the van was riding on south parker road when it tried to make a left-hand turn and slammed into the motorcycle tonight. the pair later died. the driver and passenger in the van were not hurt.

in the crash. it's 6:37 now. cooler weather is going to help nearly 120 firefighters fight a wild fire in lambert county. at this point it's burned 350 acres about 43 people are under voluntary evacuation orders. 30 homes are threatened. terry mackeeda the former el paso sheriff will be today. two other sheriffs were indicted by an el paso grand jury in may. 9 news reporter colleen ferreira is joining us. >> and his name may sound familiar to many of you. in the summer of 2013 mackeeda resigned in december of 2014. he is in court today for allegations that came about almost a year and a half after

former under sheriff paulo presley and former sheriff's commander juan st. augustine will also be in court today. some of the things they're accused of threatening to terminate a contract with a company if that company didn't fire an employee that they didn't like. and coercing a woman who was involved in a domestic dispute to take back her the three of them posted bond back in may so they're not in jail at the moment. but they will make their first court appearance today at 1:30. 6:38 right now. dreams of plenty of water and healthy fish in the south platt river. denver water and state

it will include restoring clean fresh water. to restore the river to conditions in which trout can reproduce. waters in canyon is such a beautiful place but as of today you're going to have to enjoy it -- pardon me -- on the weekends. crews make repairs to the high lying canal diversion structure there on the south platt river. now signal the arrival of a cold front and much higher humidity levels than we had here yesterday. boulder looking to the south and west shows the solid overcast. some of that moisture being spun off hurricane newton which has made landfall. cloudy conditions for us early on. mid morning clearing and then thunderstorms start this afternoon and this evening. we have a wide variety of

at 6:43 we're going live up to sky 9. we now have new information about the crash on northbound i-25 at 104th which has closed down the highway. this is now confirmed as a fatal crash. one person has died. two other people involved in the reck that were in the other vehicle involved were not seriously injured in the crash. we'll come out to our c-dot

the backup there that loaded up on the approach itself. here's a view of our c-dot cameras. this is the scene of the crash. you can see they're filtering cars through one at a time. single digit speeds are in place at thornton parkway and down farther between 84th and thornton it's just a stop and go drive. as for your alternate drive we do need to explain how to get around. gary, u.s. 36 and 870. as well as our major crash westbound i-70 at havana. backups now 31 minutes coming in from 225. so multiple areas of our drive are affected. in the news today a third person has died as a result of tropical storm hermine a south carolina man was trying to

the storm from a highway when he was hit by the car. the driver was also killed in north carolina when strong winds tipped over his 18 wheeler. and a homeless man was killed when a tree fell on him in florida. new york is now under a tropical storm warning as hermine continues to churn off the atlantic coast. even more difficult in rhode island the home sits right along the ocean and the video shows the winds are just stirring up the around it. it's a beach house so no one was home at the time. the mexican government is opening dozens of shelters this morning as a new hurricane is strengthening as it nears cabo. the storm is expected to work over or near cabo. >> it's right now about 50 miles northwest of cabo. made landfall earlier this morning with 90 miles per hour winds. we're continuing to see newton move to the northwest.

with up to 90 miles per hour winds at last report. we're going to continue to see it with hurricane strength. once it makes it into mainland mexico and into the southeastern sections of arizona where we could have some very heavy rain. 5" to 7" of rain and a few locations in baja and northwest mexico. here's hermine. it is spinning around. the rain is not the big issue it is the wind. 65 mil forecasted to circle around long island over into connecticut up towards massachusetts for the next couple of days. so this is just going to be whipping things around not necessarily a ton of rain but the wind is going to be a huge issue. >> all right marty. well volunteers from the denver chapter payroll can

our i-25 drive northbound. but this is a second crash along the highway commute. this is i do believe 136th avenue northbound with multiple lanes blocked here. we also have a closure farther to the south. let's go to our c-dot cam. tough to see here but in the backups you can see northbound i-25 is shut down across all lanes of traffic. the cars that were stuck between the closure and the are being able to pass through slowly one at a time. they do have to prepare for the investigation and that means letting the cars through but keeping the highway closed through the south. now extended back to thornon and the backups towards 85th avenue will start to build up. you can get around northbound i-25 use that washington or huron parallel and then reenter

>> fantastic. the weather looks ideal. the kickoff temperature about 77 degrees. we've already had thunderstorms in southwestern colorado. clouds over us now due to a cold front that came through. we'll break them up mid morning. reform this afternoon. look for a brief period of moderate to heavy storms this afternoon and this evening. not really finishing until after 7:00 tonight. so pockets of moderate to heavy rain here that actually get stronger and stronger the farther north andas busy evening over the northeastern plains. but it will start here on the front range and rural up i-76. before the storms begin we'll be in the 70s and low 80s for the highs today. southwestern colorado in the san juans scenes of storms. they will reform there in the south and east in the afternoon and evening. cut across the front range. blow up over the plains in the

few pockets here but it will be much more consistent the farther north and east you go we're all in a severe weather risk this afternoon from the metro area to fort collins, greeley, through sterling. fort morgan and all the way down toward lamar and springfield. so those are going to be areas that we're quite concerned with. hail, strong winds as well with a few downpours of heavy rain during the evening tonight. 70s, 80s for the very hot in southeastern colorado before the storms begin. late day storms, severe storms are possible late in the afternoon. temperatures in the low 80s today. the storms go through the evening and we stay cloudy overnight. sit eave on thursday looking at a beautiful evening for the broncos, panthers, slightly cooler air moves in on friday. >> i like that a lot.

top stories we are following this morning. former el paso sheriff terry mack eeda will be in court today. he faces several charges including extortion, witness tampering, and kidnapping. former sheriff's commander juan san augustine also face charges. firefighters are getting a head start on lightning sparked the flames has spread to more than 350 acres. additional crews were brought in to help fight the fire. a tattoo shop is trying to find this man. the custom ari chiros. it took an artist seven and a half hours.
