good morning everyone. we begin with a gunman who shot president ronald reagan and three other people in 1981. john hinkley will be a free man today. >> he spent more than 35 years in a mental hospital in washington for the crime. vida urbonas has more from the information center. >> good morning. the man who shot president ronald reagan 35 years ago is scheduled to leave a washington area mental hospital for good later today. a federal judge ruled in late july that the 61-year-old john himself or the public and can live full time in his mother's time in virginia. hinkley had already been visiting williamsburg for long stretches at a time. he lived with his family in evergreen, colorado, a year before the attempts on the president's life. he will live with his mother for a year before living alone or with roommates.

continue therapy while in virginia. hinkley got a driver's license in 2011. the court order in this case lets him drive within 30 miles of williamsburg by himself, and we won't be hearing from him any time soon. he's barred from talking to the press. in the information center, vida urbonas, 9 news. investigators say at least one person it's possible there may be additional victims. the driver was in a gray chevy impala. it's a good morning for a pumpkin-spiced latte. that's what we've been talking about all morning. >> by the way, do you know how many calories that thing has? >> do i look like i worry about calories.

dry forecast. we're going to top out in the low 80s an 3:00 and 5:00. coming up i've got a whole lot to talk about in your forecast. summer is slipping away. tomorrow could be the last 90- degree temperature of the year and then a big cooldown. 7:04 on your saturday morning. now to an update on breaking news we brought you yesterday. a 5-year-old girl was rescued from a burning home in lakewood, and now firefighters want to remind the importance of talking to children about what to do in dangerous situations like that. the father tried to run insides to safe her, but the smoke and flames were too intense. that girl told firefighters she hid in the closet. crews did find her, but she was so scared it took a long time to coax her to come out. children like to hide and it can be a big problem when

they spoke with us about what happened. >> i don't think it's all that unusual. when children get scared, they hide. we try to train our children not to hide. it's tough. i have a little girl at home too. this one hit home. >> emotional for firefighters. they say parents should practice fire drills at home and make sure children know at least two ways out of the house. the 5-year-old girl and smoke inhalation. the cause remains under investigation. a school board member accused of child sex crimes is being held without bond this morning. robert vashaw works for adams 14. vashaw was arrested on friday and is expected to face charges of criminal sexual assault of a

child. "we are allowing the appropriate law enforcement agency to handle this matter. we recognize these are allegations, and as such we will not speculate as to the facts of the situation. " vashaw will be in court next week. tomorrow hundreds of blue balloons will fill the sky in honor of a douglas county detective shot in the line of duty last week. dan bright was shot responding to a call with a rifle. shots were fired and the suspect was shot and killed. in a press conference on friday, the douglas county sheriff says the quick actions of swat medics saved his detective's life. >> it's inspirational. his strength makes you want to

there's several events going on this weekend. there's an events tomorrow at civic center park. there will be a procession by the national guard. the governor and mayor will be in attendance. thousands are expected to turn out for the 2016 stair climb. it is a way to honor and remember the firefighters who selflessly gave 9/11. >> it's a very popular events and there's a similar one happening in downtown denver. nearly 350 local firefighters will be climbing 110 stories at the century link building, the second tallest building in denver. of course this he ven does what all the others does, a chance for firefighters to honor the new york firefighters.

blame for this. a car fire in st. petersburg florida. investigators are trying to figure out how this happened, but the owner says it could be his new galaxy note phone. this has prompted a recall. he says he was never told about this recall, though, when he recently bought his phone. he says the fire started when he left his suv running with air conditioningn the obama administration is asking the company working on the dakota access pipeline to voluntarily pause construction in north dakota. they asked the court to temporarily stop construction on the pipeline. federal authorities say they want to review their permitting for the dakota access pipeline. the tribe has held protests.

north dakota to illinois crossing the river. the tribe says it will damage their water supply and violate several laws. a man reported to be worth millions of dollars has been receiving government assistance for the past two years. he lives in an 8,000-square foot mansion in ohio, has horses, swimming pools and cars, but has been receiving food stamps, welfare. he says his application and eligibility for aid are all legal because his money comes from loans provided by friends. federal agents raided his mansion. they're investigating potential theft and other charges as well. so far he does not face official charges. >> he appears to have a sweet portrait of himself. the cable cars that jammed in the french alps are working

dozens of people were rescued yesterday. strong winds caused the mechanical problem. rescuers had to climb the cable to give the victims food and blankets. in austin, texas, a rescue of a different kind. a scary situation for a driver in downtown austin friday afternoon after police say he drove police say the driver drove off the garage and got caught in high-tension wires. he managed to get out of the car without any injuries. he was wearing his seatbelt. crews were able to lower to car down friday. there's no word on why the accident happened in the first place. >> bad drive. now, we're in the saying he's a gold digger, but a man searching a river for specs of

and reupholstering, so it gives you a good starting point. if you have a basic piece of furniture and sewing machine, this is something you could do. last week i showed you how i took apart an old bar stool, stripped the stain and refinished it. i still had to reupholstee seat. i was intimidated by the process, so i called my mom. after that phone call, she assured me that this was something i could easily to. so start, i flipped the seat cushion over and started removing what seemed like two million staples. i used two different tools, a flathead screwdriver and needle-

was secure. once that was finally completed, i removed the fabric carefully, salvaging the foam and seat board. next i took my seam ripper and carefully removed the thread that held the cushion together. it's really important not to rip the fabric in this step, because each piece of old fabric will serve as pattern. i chose a neutral commercial grade upholstery fabric for my new cushions and laid it out on a large flat surface. then i took my new pattern, or the old pieces of fabric that used to make up the seat cushion, and placed it wrong side to right side on top of the new fabric. i pinned it in place, and using

fabric. next i pinned the new pieces of fabric together to rebuild the cushion, matching them right side to right side. to sew it together, i grabbed my sewing machine, but also special upholstery thread and upholstery needles. this ensures that the new cushion gets stitched together properly. once rightside out and fit it over the board. now i was ready to staple it back on. i pulled the fabric tight and attached the fabric to the wood board. make sure you watch where the screw holes are on the seat bottom. you'll need to know where to reattach the piece. the whole project for three
