bombs were planted in manhattan and two investigations taking place, one on the vaerrazano bridge and in chelsea. one exploding in a busy train station. the city's mayor spoke to nbc about that explosion and concern for the state of the country. >> extremely concerned for the residents of the community, but more importantly extremely concerned for everybody in the state or country where somebody can drop a backpack in a garbage can with no timers and you have to wonder how many people could have been hurt. i don't have the expertise to determine the blast function of that. but based on the loudness, i

were in the vicinity when that went off. >> here with more on the investigation there. >> reporter: good morning. the mayor here of elizabeth, new jersey says multiple devices have been discovered here. when the bomb squad was cutting into the first device, we heard a loud explosion sending officers and people standing in the directions. the mayor says it was one of a backpack full of five devices th suddenly went off. they're now looking at the other four devices and trying to recover them and remove them from the area. the mayor says they were looking that devices and concerned about them when the bomb squad had been here for three or four hours and we heard all of a sudden that explosion. at first we were told it was a controlled explosion. the mayor said it certainly was

suspicious devices gone off, it was about 300 feet from the pub. it could have killed or maimed several people. the situation still unfolding. still a very fluid situation. back to you guys. and overnight, law enforcement officials tell nbc news they may have a possible suspect that scene. one of the bombs which authorities say was filled with shrapnel, went off saturday night injuring 29 people. the other placed inside a pressure cooker was recovered by police and taken for analysis. it was later disabled in a remote location. all twin29 victims have been released. we still don't know who deliberately set off that blast. a similar bombing took place during a military race on the

blast on the left. the one in new york on the right. thankfully no one was hurt. after the race, it started late and subsequently canceled. a person has yet to be apprehended in that case. and now investigators are trying to piece together what if any connection there may have been between the two attacks. chris, a lot of the details have been breaking overnight. what have you learned in the last couple of hours? >> reporter: yeah, and the scene is still active 23rd street in new york's chelsea neighborhood, as they investigate the bomb that went off saturday night, but with all of the developments, this tone and tenner of the investigation is taken on another aspect. and several police sources have told nbc news that they hear that there might be some sort of active terror cell operating in the new york or new jersey area

preliminary information. the fears of some investigators speaking with nbc news and last night around 8:30, there was a car pulled over on the verrazano bridge. five people are being questioned with possible connections with this event and police are trying to tie everything together. all of this at the start of the u.n. general assembly when security would already be tight. an additional thousand guard troops and state troopers here in new york city. >> and a fear that it may possibly happen again. and as chris mentioned, right now a greater sense of alert as president obama and world leaders convene right here in manhattan for the start of the u.n. general assembly and as the manhunt continues, it comes as president obama prepares for his final u.n. appearance, along with a series of high profile

police expressed concerns about a possible "active terrorism network" in the new york and new jersey area... police found at least five explosives inside a backpack at a new station and sent in a bomb robot. police say - the robot was cutting a wire when one of the bombs exploded in elizabeth, new jersey. right now - heavily armed fbi agents are conducting a raid at an elizabeth, new jersey address -- the same town where the bombs were found. we also know police stopped a "vehicle of interest" and questioned five people last night.. none of those five were charged. we'll keep bringing
