troopers to help restore order. nbc's gabe gutierrez has all the overnight developments. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this is the nascar hall of fame, one of the buildings damaged in the chaos. what started out as peaceful protests quickly spiraled out of control right in the heart of downtown charlotte. the governor now bringing in the national guard. overnight, a rampage in north caro demonstrators clashing with officers in riot gear for a second straight night. teargas used to push the crowd back, protesters tossing the canisters back at police. the omni hotel forced to lock its guests inside. >> the protest started peacefully but demonstrators ramping up, a heavy police presence outside this hotel. >> reporter: a shot rings out.

authorities say it was civilian gunfire, not police. a wounded man rushed to the hospital in critical condition. throughout the night at least four police officers hurt. >> you are seeing a female officer who has been injured. she's being helped by paramedics in riot gear. she is unable to walk on her own. >> reporter: emotions full of anger. >> we got shots fired. >> reporter: this morning, this new photo apparently showing a gun on the ground next to scott, obtained from an eyewitness by charlotte station wcnc. a police source says it is genuine. police say scott was armed. some eyewitnesses say he wasn't. >> he exited the vehicle armed with a handgun. >> did you see any gun on him? >> i did not. no gun. it was a book. >> reporter: no book was found at the scene. police say scott failed to follow their commands.

scenes. morning, bros. watching the scenes from this movie, there is hazing that is just like -- it's medieval. goes back "game of thrones" kind of stuff. does this exist today? >> the great thing about making this film is it really does kind of pull the curtain away and show some of the real stories. we have a lot of the brothers that were in the movie with us were telling us they through exactly the same experiences. the hazing culture is kind of very private and protected by members of a fraternity. it is not always something that we are aware of, that they are even being hazed or this is part of the process. this film, with the hazing, it is also about brotherhood on many levels and kuind of the growth of two young men. >> ben, it is acting.

but was there ever a point you were uncomfortable being in part of this? >> it was real wild. but we had a real sense of trust between the cast. when you have that confidence in each other, you can really let each other off the leash and go for it and trust that you're not going to get hurt by your fellow actors. but i think at times it was tougher for the guys doing the hazing than it was for us getting hazed. everyone andrew was trying to keep us separated. he kept telling us not to talk to each other. >> growing up in the '80s, the guy who played johnny in "karate kid." he must get heat when he just walks down the street. these guys, they're going medieval. like i said. is there a message? social media have all kinds of comments. you aren't giving a referendum or fraternity life here. >> the film is not an indictment of fraternities, by any means.

out to make it. it is dramatization of one man's story, a memoir. was it a great experience for him? no. but it is just one person's experience. >> you guys are both younger brothers. as well as an older brother. what's the worst you've experienced at the hands of joe? >> you know, we never did anything physically. although now joe is really getting into mma training and while. >> you're solid. >> thank you. we might get in the cage and give it a go now. but when we were younger, more psychological warfare with the brothers which was good training for doing this film. >> what did you do to frankie? >> he had it easy. we were all out of the house. he was about 10. but now he is in college. when he first started, i said you have to watch this movie. >> is he going to join a frat?
