>> i-70 in vale looking snowy. becky breaks down your forecast. breaking news this morning. crews are working on a wildfire in evergreen. evergreen fire says a worker actually called the fire in just after 1:30 this morning. >> so when crews got to the scene, there were strong winds fueling these flames. it grew to about two to four acres and no homes are threat fend. no this fair is 75% contained. we're expecting cooler temperatures and expecting the winds to die down. > headline that has become all to familiar in the country, a shooting in a public place. this time it was a mall in washington state where a gunman shot and killed five people and then took off. four women were killed, and we just learned early this morning that a man died as well. police have not said how many more people were injured. it happened at a mall about 65 miles north of seattle.

somewhere this morning, last seen walking away from the mall with a rifle and it's left another community shaken. >> i seen two young girls and an older man run outside and i was kind of curious on why they just ran, and the girl said gun. after that, bang bang bang, and i heard -- i heard like about seven or eight shots, and at that point i dropped what i had in my hand and started running. th make up department of that macy's store. investigators have no clue about motive. they need to find the shooter first. switch gears a little bit. if you are going up to the high country, you better grab your boots and coat. fall is here. snow piled up on highway 550 and stranded drivers for a bit. >> becky ditchfield here now. it's already here, snow. >> i know, september. you know, ski country loves this. >> i know.

actually, right? >> we have, and we're going to see it wind down as we head into later this morning and into this afternoon. we still have winter weather advisories covering parts of our northern mountains. this is the front range, this is fort collins. right now we've got partly cloudy skies and calmer winds. the winds died down last night, so good news that the winds are calming down, but boy, it sure is going to feel like fall today. out to our west snow moving into parts of our central mountains here along and east of i-25. we're not expecting to get that. we'll have a chance for light rain showers out to the west over the foothills today. temperatures at 47 near downtown denver. div dropped to 38. 41 for fort collins and upper 30s through the foothills. through the remainder of your morning we'll be in the 50s and

middle 60s today. race for the cure tomorrow. we've got a good-looking forecast for that, a dry but cool sunday, and 80s return before you know it. we'll have details coming up. calm here but heavy downpours, twisters touching down in streets that look like rivers, parts of the country getting slammed with severe weather. it's so bad in iowa, the national guard has been activated. in utah, at least two tornadoes left a path of destruction. >> good in system across the country. across the united states, weather systems were so powerful, rain, heavy wind gusts sweeping sideways. in utah, storm clouds caught on camera. a small twister damaged homes, one knocked off its foundation, its roof split in half. in the midwest, parts of wisconsin and iowa saw more than a half a foot of rain in 48 hours.

rivers were overflowing into towns across those states. a dock with a boat swept over a dam. the damaging flood waters killed at least two men in wisconsin. in minneapolis, body cams on police officers captured a daring night time rescue of a man being swept away. and this morning, people in eastern evacuated from their homes, they're facing flood water situations there as well. in the information center, vida urbonas. flooding has forced areas like buffalo to close streets. can you see those ducks and geese were actually set free from a zoo. officials there say the flooding was so bad, these guys were released fotheir own

he has a tbi. he's not going to do anything to you guys. he just took his medicine. keith, keith, don't you do it!. >> this is the video released so far of the moments leading up to keith scott's death in charlotte, north carolina. it was shot by his wife to is now asking the police department to release their video in the name of transparency. in that video, you heard scott's wife shouting that he doesn't have a gun and that he's suffering a medical condition, however, you also hear officers repeatedly before officers fired four shots. this has sparked peaceful but powerful protests in charlotte for a fourth night. investigators still have not released the body cam video of the shooting, and now say it's up to the state bureau of investigation to do so. hundreds of demonstrators marched through downtown

a rally. the naacp and community leaders are now asking for lawmakers to establish an independent body to investigate every officer- involved shooting with an independent prosecutor. the protests have been peaceful for the most part. a silents protest is scheduled for today. now to a bizarre story out of maryland. an attorney for a 15-year-old girl there says a police officer overreacted when he pepper sprayed her. the girl crashed her a car. this video shows the officer trying to talk to the girl. she walks away, and then the officer grabs her and tries to arrest her. he puts her in the car and she refuses to put her feet inside. that's when the officer pepper sprays the girl. now, the officer is still on active duty. this morning we're getting a look at new images that could help solve a deadly hit and run. a driver hit jason holden on

bike. then that driver ended up taking off. investigators want to talk to whoever is in the suv. they are considered possible witnesses to that crash. it has a roof rack or ski rack and was in the area around the time of the incident. state troops believe a white sedan or small suv hit holden while trying to pass him. he lost control, tumbled into westbound traffic while he was hit by a truck and died. if you have information, you're ke state patrol. they're called virtual kidnappings. someone calls you to say someone has been taken hostage. a woman in aurora says she was the victim of one of these scams recently. mary lou hendricks went to her car, started to go to the bank,

different from the scams that we have been warned about before. >> and if i don't follow his instructions, they'll never find my son. they've got cody and they're gonna hurt him if i don't do what they tell me. >> so after the initial shock of the call, she called her son, cody, who was safe at home. looking back, hendricks says there were clearly signs this was a scam. she said the caller went to great lengths to keep her on the phone so sh contact anybody else. in fact, hendricks said the caller didn't know anything about her son. we have much more information about this on 9news.com. investigators want to know how five inmates got their hands on crack cocaine. they were all sent to the hospital because it appears they overdosed on the drug. medicsthe sheriff's department said this is a rare occurrence.

are conducted randomly. search teams have not been able to find a climber. david cook was planning to climb the pyramid peak on monday. a receipt was found indicating that he arrived at the maroon bells on monday. a search team went out to look for him on friday, of poor visibility, they weren't able to find him. police got a call about a suspicious vehicle in a local farmer's field. that's when they discovered a man dead. his death is being investigated as a homicide. hillary clinton and donald trump have had opposite strategies this past week. trump spent most of his time on the campaign trail.

expected to spend on advertising from now until election day. a senior communications adviser predicts $100 million will go to tv air time. overall, in terms of finances, frustration is growing within his campaign, because money still doesn't match his rivals. there's a gap estimated around $200 million compared to clinton's campaign. donald trump and hillary clinton are gearing up for their first presidential debate on monday. a recent poll shows more voters trust hillary clinton over donald trump when it comes to many issues. american voters say they also trust clinton more than trump on fixing problems with health care. and 40% believe the former

. 7:15 now on your saturday morning. becky ditchfield is along to tell us just how cold is it going to get, becky? >> cold enough that you have to wear your jacket. >> and i almost didn't bring this today, i thought oh, i can handle it, it's only a couple minutes outside. i'm glad i have my jacket out here this morning. we're only in the 40s. we'rin middle to upper 60s today. plenty of sunshine in and around the denver metro area. out at dia it's just 38 degrees. 41 up around greeley. fort collins is at 44. alamosa, 28. down in those parts of southern colorado, we have a freeze warning that's in effect until 9:00 a.m., so not for too much longer, but you can already see those cold temperatures

out to our west we continue to see rain and snowfall, although no snow reports yet here across colorado. those have been coming in through southern and southeast wyoming, believe it or not, where we saw snowfall late last night, early this morning, however you want to put it. it was just after 2:00 in the morning where areas around laramie saw 2-4 inches of snowfall. our northern mountains continues under winter he advisories. these go until 11:00 this morning, mainly locations above 9,000 feet. those areas will see 2-6 inches of snowfall, light accumulation. certainly you're going to see snow flakes all the way down to 7500 feet, a lot of that melting as it hits the ground. the cold front that brought in this big change is now east of colorado. we're on the back side of this system. we'll continue to see showers continue over our northern and central mountains through this afternoon, and then it clears tonight. high pressure settles in tomorrow.

completely but it's also going to help to keep some of that cooler air around. we do have rain and snow anticipated through our northern and central mountains, and even through our foothills through about 6:00 tonight and then a few clouds in and around the denver metro area. we're not expecting any kind of rain here, overall just a mild day. 68 degrees our high. 68 for greeley. warm spot will be the eastern plains 50s. denver, like i said, 68. partly cloudy and cooler today. winds will be out of the north at 5-15 miles per hour. tonight we drop to 41. we will be mostly cloudy. it's going to be a chilly evening, and then you're going to wake up tomorrow to some cool temperatures, but beautiful weather for race for the cure. 46 degrees at 8:00, 51 at 9:00, and 55 by 10:00 a.m. for the ceremony with mostly sunny skies.

coach officially filling in for patrick. yesterday, day one of avalanche training camp. >> there's a certain level of excitement that comes with every training camp because everyone is starting fresh, and especially with a new coach. it's no different for me. it's exciting to get to know some new players and now i've met with all of them and talked with them and have been working on our game plan for the last few weeks. now it's time to t ice. this is the fun part. >> and we saved our best story for our last story. the 9news sports department just grew by one, a baby boy. wife and new son are doing great.

east. div is at a chilly 38. 40 in greelley, 43 in fort collins. we're going to climb into the 50s by 8:00 and 9:00 this morning, and then we'll hit the 60s by 11:00 a.m. today and tomorrow looking fairly cool, but if you like that 80-degree weather, it's coming back quickly. we'll have that and your race for the cure forecast coming up. >> sounds good. thank you very much becky. denver robbing a bank in northeast denver. police say those two men held up the u.s. bank on colorado boulevard yesterday before noon. one man who had a medical issue was taken out of the bank on a stretcher. investigators are trying to figure out why a loaded truck rolled over on i-25 shutting down the interstate. the driver was seriously hurt

denver. back ups extended beyond monument hill. world news this morning, the fighting in syria is back on after a cease fire there fell apart. the regime says it will continue air strikes. at least 91 people died yesterday alone. the deadly attacks are escalating worse than ever. >> children were trapped under rubble following several air strikes. a 5-year-old girl had to be pulled out of her home. she is alive. her parents and four other siblings did not make it. they've been the focus for both syrian and rebel war planes. hundreds of people have been injured since the cease fire ended on monday. in western japan, a postal

had been soaked by heavy rains. a segment washed out. president obama vetoed a controversial bill that would allow 9/11 families to sue saudi arabia. the families say gave aid to al-qaeda. the 9/11 commission said it found no evidence that the saudi government or officials funded al-qaeda. congress is expected for the first time to override a veto by president obama and make it law. have you ever tried to get somewhere fast but people in fronts of you are just walking a little too slow.

id chip, and they were able to track down outdated information. two volunteers stepped in to take the owners. missy was taken from brenda's yard five years ago. she's supposed to be a companion dog for her daughters. melissa moreton made a 14-hour trip to return missy. >> when i posted on facebook to colorado, never did i expect to be driving the dog back to colorado and here we are and it's gotten tons of attention and i'm just excited to be a part of it. >> if you post it on facebook, you've got to do it. a local rental car office donated the car so she could make the drive to colorado. no word how missy ended up in

>> no. >> but you are, becky, so that's what counts. >> now you're being nice. temperatures in the 40s, so on the cool side, but hey, fall officially began on thursday. that's what we're supposed to see this time of year, right? this is a live look over denver where temperatures are in the 30s and 40s now. 38 degrees near downtown denver, 43 for greeley, 44 up around fort alamosa 28. we've got a mixture of low 30s and upper 20s through a lot of our mountain areas, but it's that southern section of colorado where a freeze warning is in effect because we're below 32 degrees and that's in place until 9:00 a.m. a little bit further to the north and west, rain and snow. now, i have not seen any reports come through colorado for actual snow amounts yet. i have seen them um around wyoming where we saw snow very,

shortly after 2:00 a.m., 2-4 inches of snow fell on the ground there. we're going to keep the winter weather advisories for our northern mountains until 11:00 today. that's for areas above 9,000 feet. 2-6 inches of new snow fall. down to 7500 feet, we also see light snow. the cold front is to our east. we're on the back side of this system now so we're going to see the remainder of our rain and snow in the northern mountains today. denver will be dry. by sunday, high pressure settles back in and everybody is dry across the state. here's how it plays out. by 6:00 tonight, we may still have a few snow showers over the central mountains, too dry

got a call about this fire at 1:30 this morning. strong winds didn't help firefighters overnight. officials say it burned 2-4 acres. firefighters were able to get a line around that fire so they could attack the flames from the inside. no homes were threatened, no one was hurt. it is a headline that is becoming all to familiar in this country, a shooting in a public place, a place where people tend to feel safe. this time it was a mall in washington state where a gunman shot and killed fi then took off. four women were killed, and we just learned early this morning that a man died as well. police have not said how many people were injured. it had about 45 miles north of seattle. that gunman is still out there somewhere this morning, last seen walking away from the mall with a rifle, and it's left another community shaken. >> i seen two young girls and

ran, and out of nowhere, the girl said gun. then after that, bang bang bang, and i heard like about seven or eight shots, and that that point i dropped whatever i had in my hand and i just started running. >> all this happened in the cosmetics section of a macy's store. investigators have no clue about motive. they need to find that shooter first. switching gears a bit, if you're going to the high country, you better grab your boots and coat. as we just saw a minute ago, fall is that clear. snow piled up on highway 550, stranded some drivers. >> feel like mother nature is so on cue. as soon as we made that official switch to fall, we saw snow. >> yeah, right. september, snow in the mountains. a lot of people across the country getting excited about that. >> i think the first resort opens mid-october, so that's just around the corner. >> just around the corner. we're going to see more cool weather as we head into today

this afternoon and into this evening for our northern and central mountains. this is what it looks like here in denver. lots of sunshine around the city. cool, though. all this rain and snow on the radar screen is out to our west and it's going to stay there. we do have a chance for light rain showers across our foothills late this afternoon and into this evening. denver, fort collins and greeley, we're going to stay dry, and no official reports of the mountains. temperatures now in denver, a chilly 46 degrees. dia, 46. 43 for fort collins and 30s and 40s through the foothills. through the remainder of this morning, we're warming up to 58 by 10:00 and 64 by noon. we're only going to be in the middle to upper 60s for high today. if you like the warmer weather, it's returning quickly too.

plus your full race for the cure forecast coming up. twisters touching down and streets that look like rivers. parts of the country is getting slammed with severe weather. it's so bad in iowa, the national guard has been activated. in utah, two tornadoes left a path of destruction. 9news reporter vida urbonas is in the information system with more. >> we're talking about that powerful storm system across the country. across the unit powerful, rain, heavy wind gusts were sweeping sideways. a small twister damaged homes. one knocked off its foundation. its roof split in half. in the midwest, parts of wisconsin and iowa saw more than a half a foot of rain in 48 hours, and in minnesota, 13 inches in some areas. rivers were overflowing into towns across those states.

had a medical condition. however, you also hear officers repeatedly tell scott to drop his gun before officers fired four shots. this has sparked protests in charlotte for a fourth night. investigators still have not released the body cam video of the shooting and say it's now up to the state bureau of investigation to do so. well, she wasn't going to be a victim and the men who broke in found that out the hard way. ll woman in georgia boldly taking matters into her own hands. you see those guys break in, and there she goes, wielding a gun, charging at those guys while firing shots. the suspects tried to run. only one of them made it. one person was shot and killed by this homeowner. investigators have released the surveillance video with the hopes of finding the two other robbers there. law enforcement officials say please be safe in situations like this and call 911 as soon as you can.

moving through. in official snow reports just yet, and by that i mean snow measurements taken across parts of our mountains. vi seen them in southern and southeast wyoming and that came early this morning. a band of snow showers pushed through the laramie area and shortly after 2:00 a.m., we had a couple reports, varying between 2-4-inch of snow. our winter weather advisories continue through 11 we're talking areas above 9,000 feet. we're talking rabbit ears pass. there, 2-6 inches of snow will fall. down to 7500 feet could still see snow, but it's going to be light accumulation, most of that melting as it hits the ground. we're seeing the back side of a storm system that moved through yesterday. the cold front is well east of colorado. we're going to see the moisture wrap around that system, pushing to mainly our mountains before it clears out tonight.

when colorado starts to see snow. >> and it's so impressive to see it on the mountains. >> it's going to last for a little while longer, but late this afternoon and into this evening, it starts to die down a little bit. take a look outside. this is fort collins yesterday. this picture was of a flag that was just going in the winds. winds have died down now that the cool front has passed and we've got snow left over in the mountains and cooler weather in town. there you can see some of rain and snow on the radar screen. not that impressive right now, pushing in towards the east. it will bring a rain or snow shower to parts of our foothills later today, but right now most of the snow that we're seeing on the radar is west. it's 46 at dia. up near longmont you're at 46. idaho springs, 37. the rest of your morning has us warming up until the upper 50s

to pursue the death penalty. denver police looking for two armed men wanted for robbing a bank in northeast denver. police say they held up the u.s. bank on colorado boulevard near 50th yesterday before noon. both men were armed and wearing masks. police say one person who had a medical issue was taken out of that bank on a stretcher. in world news, the fighting in syria is back on after a cease fire there just apart. the syrian regime says it will continue air strikes as well as launching a ground offensive. at least 91 people died yesterday alone. the deadly attacks are now escalating and some say they are worse than ever. rescue efforts are underway in the city of olepo. a 5-year-old girl was pulled out of her home. she's alive but her parents and four siblings did not make it.

hundreds of people have been injured since that cease fire ended on monday. in japan, a postal worker plunged into the ground, trying to leave him with serious injuries. he was driving on that hill that had been soaked by heavy rains. a segment of the road washed out and he didn't see the 78- foot crevice. well, a missing dog from colorado who found her way family in pueblo this morning. >> it's a very sweet story, and thanks to the help of a stranger, missy was picked up as a stray in monday in missouri. animal control workers found this id chip with outdated information but they were able to find the owner. two volunteers stepped in. missy was taken from brenda's yard five years ago.

why? a cool front pushed through. we've got 48 degrees around sterling, 46 in denver, 48 up around greeley, up through those mountains, lower to middle 30s. down to the south still sitting at 30 in alamosa. so that freeze warning is in effect for a few more minutes. it's going to take us until 9:00 a.m. and then it will expire as temperatures get above 32 degrees. out to the west we've got snow and rain. this part of the system that's been pushing through since yesterday, same one that brought right now no official snow total reports up for the mountains, at least in colorado. a little further to our north over wyoming, though, shortly after 2:00 this morning, a couple totals came in near laramie in the 2-4-inch range, so this system wrapping up with us today. we're going to keep those winter weather advisories until 11:00. those will remain in effect for a few more hours.
