>> i-70 in vale looking snowy. becky breaks down your forecast. breaking news this morning. crews are working on a wildfire in evergreen. evergreen fire says a worker actually called the fire in just after 1:30 this morning. >> so when crews got to the scene, there were strong winds fueling these flames. it grew to about two to four acres and no homes are threat fend. no this fair is 75% contained. we're expecting cooler temperatures and expecting the winds to die down. > headline that has become all to familiar in the country, a shooting in a public place. this time it was a mall in washington state where a gunman shot and killed five people and then took off. four women were killed, and we just learned early this morning that a man died as well. police have not said how many more people were injured. it happened at a mall about 65 miles north of seattle.

somewhere this morning, last seen walking away from the mall with a rifle and it's left another community shaken. >> i seen two young girls and an older man run outside and i was kind of curious on why they just ran, and the girl said gun. after that, bang bang bang, and i heard -- i heard like about seven or eight shots, and at that point i dropped what i had in my hand and started running. th make up department of that macy's store. investigators have no clue about motive. they need to find the shooter first. switch gears a little bit. if you are going up to the high country, you better grab your boots and coat. fall is here. snow piled up on highway 550 and stranded drivers for a bit. >> becky ditchfield here now. it's already here, snow. >> i know, september. you know, ski country loves this. >> i know.

middle 60s today. race for the cure tomorrow. we've got a good-looking forecast for that, a dry but cool sunday, and 80s return before you know it. we'll have details coming up. calm here but heavy downpours, twisters touching down in streets that look like rivers, parts of the country getting slammed with severe weather. it's so bad in iowa, the national guard has been activated. in utah, at least two tornadoes left a path of destruction. >> good in system across the country. across the united states, weather systems were so powerful, rain, heavy wind gusts sweeping sideways. in utah, storm clouds caught on camera. a small twister damaged homes, one knocked off its foundation, its roof split in half. in the midwest, parts of wisconsin and iowa saw more than a half a foot of rain in 48 hours.

rivers were overflowing into towns across those states. a dock with a boat swept over a dam. the damaging flood waters killed at least two men in wisconsin. in minneapolis, body cams on police officers captured a daring night time rescue of a man being swept away. and this morning, people in eastern evacuated from their homes, they're facing flood water situations there as well. in the information center, vida urbonas. flooding has forced areas like buffalo to close streets. can you see those ducks and geese were actually set free from a zoo. officials there say the flooding was so bad, these guys were released fotheir own

he has a tbi. he's not going to do anything to you guys. he just took his medicine. keith, keith, don't you do it!. >> this is the video released so far of the moments leading up to keith scott's death in charlotte, north carolina. it was shot by his wife to is now asking the police department to release their video in the name of transparency. in that video, you heard scott's wife shouting that he doesn't have a gun and that he's suffering a medical condition, however, you also hear officers repeatedly before officers fired four shots. this has sparked peaceful but powerful protests in charlotte for a fourth night. investigators still have not released the body cam video of the shooting, and now say it's up to the state bureau of investigation to do so. hundreds of demonstrators marched through downtown

a rally. the naacp and community leaders are now asking for lawmakers to establish an independent body to investigate every officer- involved shooting with an independent prosecutor. the protests have been peaceful for the most part. a silents protest is scheduled for today. now to a bizarre story out of maryland. an attorney for a 15-year-old girl there says a police officer overreacted when he pepper sprayed her. the girl crashed her a car. this video shows the officer trying to talk to the girl. she walks away, and then the officer grabs her and tries to arrest her. he puts her in the car and she refuses to put her feet inside. that's when the officer pepper sprays the girl. now, the officer is still on active duty. this morning we're getting a look at new images that could help solve a deadly hit and run. a driver hit jason holden on

bike. then that driver ended up taking off. investigators want to talk to whoever is in the suv. they are considered possible witnesses to that crash. it has a roof rack or ski rack and was in the area around the time of the incident. state troops believe a white sedan or small suv hit holden while trying to pass him. he lost control, tumbled into westbound traffic while he was hit by a truck and died. if you have information, you're ke state patrol. they're called virtual kidnappings. someone calls you to say someone has been taken hostage. a woman in aurora says she was the victim of one of these scams recently. mary lou hendricks went to her car, started to go to the bank,

different from the scams that we have been warned about before. >> and if i don't follow his instructions, they'll never find my son. they've got cody and they're gonna hurt him if i don't do what they tell me. >> so after the initial shock of the call, she called her son, cody, who was safe at home. looking back, hendricks says there were clearly signs this was a scam. she said the caller went to great lengths to keep her on the phone so sh contact anybody else. in fact, hendricks said the caller didn't know anything about her son. we have much more information about this on 9news.com. investigators want to know how five inmates got their hands on crack cocaine. they were all sent to the hospital because it appears they overdosed on the drug. medicsthe sheriff's department said this is a rare occurrence.

out to our west we continue to see rain and snowfall, although no snow reports yet here across colorado. those have been coming in through southern and southeast wyoming, believe it or not, where we saw snowfall late last night, early this morning, however you want to put it. it was just after 2:00 in the morning where areas around laramie saw 2-4 inches of snowfall. our northern mountains continues under winter he advisories. these go until 11:00 this morning, mainly locations above 9,000 feet. those areas will see 2-6 inches of snowfall, light accumulation. certainly you're going to see snow flakes all the way down to 7500 feet, a lot of that melting as it hits the ground. the cold front that brought in this big change is now east of colorado. we're on the back side of this system. we'll continue to see showers continue over our northern and central mountains through this afternoon, and then it clears tonight. high pressure settles in tomorrow.

this afternoon and into this evening for our northern and central mountains. this is what it looks like here in denver. lots of sunshine around the city. cool, though. all this rain and snow on the radar screen is out to our west and it's going to stay there. we do have a chance for light rain showers across our foothills late this afternoon and into this evening. denver, fort collins and greeley, we're going to stay dry, and no official reports of the mountains. temperatures now in denver, a chilly 46 degrees. dia, 46. 43 for fort collins and 30s and 40s through the foothills. through the remainder of this morning, we're warming up to 58 by 10:00 and 64 by noon. we're only going to be in the middle to upper 60s for high today. if you like the warmer weather, it's returning quickly too.

plus your full race for the cure forecast coming up. twisters touching down and streets that look like rivers. parts of the country is getting slammed with severe weather. it's so bad in iowa, the national guard has been activated. in utah, two tornadoes left a path of destruction. 9news reporter vida urbonas is in the information system with more. >> we're talking about that powerful storm system across the country. across the unit powerful, rain, heavy wind gusts were sweeping sideways. a small twister damaged homes. one knocked off its foundation. its roof split in half. in the midwest, parts of wisconsin and iowa saw more than a half a foot of rain in 48 hours, and in minnesota, 13 inches in some areas. rivers were overflowing into towns across those states.

dam, and cars stranded, a train derailment spilling fuel into the mississippi. flood waters killed two men in wisconsin. body cams on police officers captured a daring night-time rescue of a man being swept away. and this morning, people in eastern iowa are also being evacuated from their homes, facing flood water situations there as well. in the urbonas 9news. he doesn't have a gun. he has a tbi. he's not going to do anything to you guys. he just took his medicine. keith, keith, don't you do it!. >> this is the only video that has been released so far, the moments leading up to keith scott's death in charlotte, north carolina. it was shot by his wife who is now asking the police department to release their video in the name of transparency. in that video you heard scott's

had a medical condition. however, you also hear officers repeatedly tell scott to drop his gun before officers fired four shots. this has sparked protests in charlotte for a fourth night. investigators still have not released the body cam video of the shooting and say it's now up to the state bureau of investigation to do so. well, she wasn't going to be a victim and the men who broke in found that out the hard way. ll woman in georgia boldly taking matters into her own hands. you see those guys break in, and there she goes, wielding a gun, charging at those guys while firing shots. the suspects tried to run. only one of them made it. one person was shot and killed by this homeowner. investigators have released the surveillance video with the hopes of finding the two other robbers there. law enforcement officials say please be safe in situations like this and call 911 as soon as you can.

of maryland. an attorney for a 15-year-old girl there says a police officer overreacted when he pepper sprayed her. police say the girl crashed her bike into a car. the pd released this body camera video. it shows the officer trying to talk to the girl. she then walks away. then the officer grabs her and tries to arrest her. then he puts her in the car and she refuses to put her feet inside. the officer pepper sprays her. the fa to sit down with the police to resolve this dispute. we have an update to breaking news that we brought you a couple weeks ago, so it has been developing. a little girl rescued from her burning home in lakewood is feeling much better this morning. west metro fire tweeted out this picture of her holding her thumbs up saying stronger every day. she hid in her closet when her home caught fire a couple weeks

moving through. in official snow reports just yet, and by that i mean snow measurements taken across parts of our mountains. vi seen them in southern and southeast wyoming and that came early this morning. a band of snow showers pushed through the laramie area and shortly after 2:00 a.m., we had a couple reports, varying between 2-4-inch of snow. our winter weather advisories continue through 11 we're talking areas above 9,000 feet. we're talking rabbit ears pass. there, 2-6 inches of snow will fall. down to 7500 feet could still see snow, but it's going to be light accumulation, most of that melting as it hits the ground. we're seeing the back side of a storm system that moved through yesterday. the cold front is well east of colorado. we're going to see the moisture wrap around that system, pushing to mainly our mountains before it clears out tonight.

when colorado starts to see snow. >> and it's so impressive to see it on the mountains. >> it's going to last for a little while longer, but late this afternoon and into this evening, it starts to die down a little bit. take a look outside. this is fort collins yesterday. this picture was of a flag that was just going in the winds. winds have died down now that the cool front has passed and we've got snow left over in the mountains and cooler weather in town. there you can see some of rain and snow on the radar screen. not that impressive right now, pushing in towards the east. it will bring a rain or snow shower to parts of our foothills later today, but right now most of the snow that we're seeing on the radar is west. it's 46 at dia. up near longmont you're at 46. idaho springs, 37. the rest of your morning has us warming up until the upper 50s

hundreds of people have been injured since that cease fire ended on monday. in japan, a postal worker plunged into the ground, trying to leave him with serious injuries. he was driving on that hill that had been soaked by heavy rains. a segment of the road washed out and he didn't see the 78- foot crevice. well, a missing dog from colorado who found her way family in pueblo this morning. >> it's a very sweet story, and thanks to the help of a stranger, missy was picked up as a stray in monday in missouri. animal control workers found this id chip with outdated information but they were able to find the owner. two volunteers stepped in. missy was taken from brenda's yard five years ago.
