recovery in light of meth awareness week. where colorado is winning the battle and which groups are just as vulnerable as ever. tips send police to a store with more than 100 neglected reptiles. 9news starts now. >> at least four people went to the hospital after a serious accident this afternoon at wadsworth and yale. denver police responded just before 2:30. two vehicles were involved. they shut down northbound it sun clear what led up to the crash. the impact sounded like a bomb going off according to a witness. >> you know, we have about, i will tell you, 30 to 40 accidents a year at this intersection. this is the worst i have seen. >> witnesses say at least a dozen people stopped to help. no word on the conditions of those taken to the hospital. meth use and its problems are not always in the headlines anymore, but, anti-drug advocates say the problems

energy into a new campaign. this is meth awareness week. as nelson garsia shows us, the effects of the addictive drug are involving. >> reporter: down on the streets in denver. >> i met up with these guys. started using meth. and, i got addicted to it pretty much instantly. >> reporter: justin sessions ran away from home at 14. >> it gave me a way to fit in. i never really fit in as a kid. so, that offered me the opportunity to fit in with a certain group of people. and happy to share his story of sadness. >> after 32 arrests and three rehabs, and just all that stuff, i lost my family. >> reporter: that story has worked for the colorado meth project. executive director kent mcclennon says teen use has dropped since 2005. >> it is important for us that we are still staying hot on the trail of making sure that teens are aware of the dangers of the drug. >> reporter: but he says adults on meth are as bad as ever.

video were chosen from 120 entries sent from around the country. they won a $20,000 prize. denver police are looking for the gunman in a double shooting on colfax overnight. two people were shot near colfax and pennsylvania street overnight. one man died. the second victim was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. police have not released any other details on the shooting tour victims. the parents of six-year-old jacob hall want you to remember him as a boy who showed his family smile. he died in the hospital today. three days after he was shot at his school's playground in south carolina. police arrested a 14-year-old boy accused of opening fire on jacob's class as they were headed outside for recess. a teacher and another first grader were also wounded. both of them are out of the hospital now. the suspect is also accused of shooting and killing his father. he was charged as a juvenile. jacob's parents say their son

suspect because that is the kind of child he was. hurricane matthew weakened somewhat today from a category 5 storm to a cat 4. today, it drenched the coast off of columbia has it roars across the caribbean on a course that threatens jamaica, haiti, and cuba. it packs winds of 150 miles an hour. it is expected to approach jamaica and haiti on monday. preparations are underway in jamaica. today, people boarded up windows and stocked up on >> it was chaos. we have been ... unbelievable. flashlights, battery radios. plastic containers. , tarps. you name it. >> at least one death in south america is being blamed on the storm. the forecast track carries it across cuba and the bahamas with an outside brush at florida more than several days

trooper taylor thyfault was killed in the line of duty when he was hit by a driver in a high speed chase. today, his youngest supporters made it clear his sacrifice will not be forgotten. garrett steele only met trooper thyfault twice. it was enough to inspire the nine-year-old to ask the football team to dedicate this season to his hero. thyfault's mom watched the tribute from the sidelines. >> i wanted to play for him. to see that i'm good and to say that >> and this past week, a jury convicted the man on trial for thyfault's murder. he was convicted of first degree murder which comes with an automatic life sentence. a youth pastor will serve 90 day ins jail for inappropriately touching a 13- year-old girl who caught counseling. 37-year-old christopher hutchenson was convicted of sexual assault on a child. he met the victim working at south fellowship church in

him at parks where the touching occurred. she told her parents and they told the police. prosecutors wanted a sentence of four years to life in prison. a store full of reptiles were found neglected today in lakewood. over the past few days, police received several tips animals at the colorado reptile company were not being cared for. today, when animal control checked in, the store was unlocked and it was empty. inside, they found a dead snake and numerous reptiles without water. thow waited for a search warrant. police say they are not planning on filing any charges at this time. the adams county animal shelter is caring for a caiman found wednesday. they need the owner to come forward. they say it has a lot more growing to do. >> these guys can get pretty big. four to five feet. they are very fast. they do eat meat.

>> the caiman is not up for adoption. if no one comes forward, it will move to the colorado gator's reptile park. in the wild these guys live in water in central and south america. with 40 days until the election, hillary clinton took off a day from campaigning. she is keeping her focus on donald trump's feud with the former miss universe. meantime, trump's team attemped to link clinton to president bill clinton's infidelities. he called her an enabler. whether his new strategy works remain to be seen considering his ugly divorce from his first wife amid accusations of infidelity. his supporters in pennsylvania seem split on the issue. >> i don't like to see it when he has these emotional outbursts. he has to think about what the people want to hear. >> all the stuff in the white house, do you want that again?

machado clinton brought up in the first debate. vp candidates tim kaine and mike pence are staying busy this weekend preparing for their only debate on tuesday. the engineer of the commuter train that crashed in new jersey is home from the hospital and speaking with federal investigators. the ntsb gave no details about their interview with him. an early review did not turn up any red flags in his work history. thursday's crash killed one woman, injured more than 100 others. the station where the train crashed. crews still could not remove the train from the terminal because of structural damage. dui patrols ramp up tonight from denver to wyoming to make sure that everyone gets home safe from the border war football game between wyoming and csu. this rivalry game draws a lot of traffic along i-25 between cheyenne and fort collins. kickoff was after 8:00 tonight at hughes stadium.

>> volkswagen will pay u.s. auto dealers $1.2 billion as a settlement. they agreed on the settlement dealers also have the option to opt out and file their own lawsuits against volkswagen. a judge still has to approve this settlement. earlier this year, volkswagen also agreed to spend up to $10 billion to buy back or repair

here we are october 1. it is feeling a little bit more like summertime. i prom that fall weather will be here before we know it. you know, a snapshot of what we are anticipating for this month typically on average, daytime highs, overnight lows around 50 degrees. rainfall a little more than an inch. and four inches of snowfall in the month of october. we are cooling things off. 59. mostly clear skies. winds out of the south at about 13 miles an hour. bit of a breeze, nothing to speak of here in the temperatures comfortable in the low 60s . on hd doppler 9 we had a couple of light little showers throughout parts of the city just to the south, douglas, elbert. most of the action is south between colorado springs and member low. that's about it. should be a mild one with temperatures into the low 50s . some spots in the 40s along the eastern plains. 37 in grand lake.

few clouds if you live across north western colorado and the far eastern plains. lunchtime, we are looking good. it is late in the afternoon, early evening that a few clouds start increasing from the southwest. you might find a couple of isolated showers along the far eastern plains. washington, morgan, logan counties i-75. and a few showers moving up to the north throughout the evening. by 10:00 p.m., once again, clear skies. and the start of really nice. nice and warm. we are back to the 80s . but then, we will take that huge dip. rrow we will go th partly skies. a breezy ti to time. out of the southeast, 5 to 15. and extremely windy on monday. mid 80s along the eastern plains. 60s ,en 0s , just to the west of the divide. about 71 in idaho springs and a handful of 80s across the city yet again. a great dose of that suhine early on in the morning. and then, things will start to,

high pressure starting to shift ever so slightly off to the east. making way for this guy. this area of low pressure is going to be a game changer. last night, the computer molds had this storm system sitting a little bit further to our north. just kind of bringing in the cool aero. now, it is dropping the storm system into colorado, and this means not only will we be watching some cooler temperatures but also some precipitation with the cool temperatures and the precipitation coming overnight, we might be looking at a little bit of snowfall. yes, i said the s word. it is happening potentially as thursday. again, not a tonover it. it is still very early on. but just wanted to kind of give you a heads up that this could potentially pan out as mother nature paints our middle week. 61 degrees on wednesday. we will cool things off to the mid 50s . and again, maybe a couple of late evening showers on wednesda kind of that rain snow mix. and that is going to continue into thursday potentially. you guys it has been so warm. so nothing is going to stick around. but it might be kind of cool to

>> woo. >> three straight warm weather days. but there's mid 80s hot. then there will be 90-degree hot. 90 degrees at kickoff. >> very similar to the cincinnati conditions. the broncos did just fine in that weather. they got a little worn out, but so did the bengals. >> they did. and it will be key that the broncos keep the pedal to the metal. jameis winston, their tampa bay team, theire offense. i know it is passing offense with mike evans and the broncos would seem to match up there with the no-fly zone, with all the pass rush heat they get from von miller, shane ray. but i think tampa bay is going to score a little bit tomorrow. i think the broncos might have to go at least 24 points from that means keeping the divas happy. they admitted.
