4:31 pm
>> we want them to hang onto these leaves a little while longer so we can appreciate it, not too much wind, but i like the sound. >> it has been a windy one today. let's check in with becky ditchfield hanging out in the windy backyard. how is it? >> right now i consider myself lucky. there's not too much wind at the moment. i don't want to jinx anything. the wind has been very strong at times in and around the denver metro area prompting wind advisories across the state and red flag warnings. we'll talk about that minute. the other windy part of the region that i want to talk about is a broader region. it will take us down to the tropics and hurricane matthew is where we begin now. hurricane matthew a category 4 storm. you can actually see the well defined eye on that satellite picture. it's a pretty large hurricane. some of its outer bands certainly hitting haiti and some of the clouds, if not a little rain starting to hit cuba and impact that part as well.
4:32 pm
as it pushes north crossing just on the far east side of cuba tuesday afternoon. here's the dangerous part to hurricane matthew. matthew is moving straight north. so it's got that forward movement already. it's taking that forward movement with it with the storm surge forward. so there's a very broad area of cuba, certainly including haiti where we're expecting a really strong storm surge, 7 to 11 country. it's going to lose a little strength as it passes over cuba, maintaining still major hurricane status as it goes just east of florida on thursday with 120 mile-per-hour winds. it's then going to take a right turn and it looks like it may impact the carolinas sometime friday and into saturday. this is something that we're watching very closely, especially when we're talking about haiti, when we're talking
4:33 pm
rain, that really strong storm surge coming that way, water will be a major issue with this storm on top of wind. in fact, let's talk about the water. we'll take you through this forecast now as we get in through tuesday at about 10:00 at night. the heaviest rain which is going to be up to 12 inches is going to fall across parts of haiti and also into that far eastern side of cuba. the further west you go into cuba, those rain totals drop off to the 3 tonc that is still a lot of water that they are anticipating and some isolated areas could see more than that. we're talking up to 20 inches of rain for parts of cuba and for part of haiti up to 40 inches of rain in isolated areas. so that's why we are watching those parts of the world very closely. fortunately nothing like that is going on here across colorado. weevil just had to deal with some wind today. we've had -- we've just had to
4:34 pm
we've had high clouds. temperatures today because of southwesterly winds warmed up to 79 degrees. our average high is 71. so we were well above average today. wind gusts at 24 miles per hour out at dia. we've got 26 mile-per-hour gusts for greeley, 29 mile-per- hour gusts up around fort collins and those gusts anywhere from 30 miles per hour in sterling to 45 miles per hour around lamar. they will be dying down once we get into if you are along i25 and to the east, foothills, you'll still see some winds hang on into tonight. we've got a breezy day tomorrow. as winds shift to the north tomorrow, it will be cooler. we've got a couple more hours left of this red flag warning in effect for denver. it goes up through northeast colorado, stretches down along i-25 through trinidad, 35 mile- per-hour gusts, very low humidity down to 12% expected in that area.
4:35 pm
wind advisory is in place until 6 p.m. 50 mile-per-hour gusts possible up around dinosaur, craig and far northwest colorado. temperatures now 78 degrees. it's 68 around greeley. look out east, 88 around ray, 89 lamar, 40s and 50s in the mountains. here outside 9news we've got just some high clouds, nice and mild, breezy, 74 degrees. not a bad day, st windy. i've been watching some rain, isolated showers on our far eastern plains. that's a severe thunderstorm watch in effect for the panhandle of nebraska. we have seen a mixture of rain and snow for that matter up in the mountains. you saw some of that video earlier in the news cast. some of that white snow is still picked up by the radar screen. that will take you up along parts of the continental divide stretching out through even glenwood springs where more than likely it's a rain and snow mix. all of this is caused by a cold
4:36 pm
once it's passed us winds will die down and shift to the north. i've got mild air moving back in. i don't want to call it cold, certainly colder than today, but our afternoon highs tomorrow are still in the 60s. high clouds come with the passing of this cold front. we are dry in denver, fort collins, greeley and our eastern plains. the backside of this system will push through our northern mountains tomorrow and that's going to bring in some very light snow, although no winter weather advisories posted for that part of our state. all that moisture starts to wrap up by 3 p.m. and we're dry from the western slope through the eastern plains through the rest of tuesday. overnight lows tonight drop to about 40 in denver, 41 around greeley and fort collins, lows middle to upper 40s to the eastern plains, 20s and 30s for the mountains. those are temperatures below freezing for many of our mountain areas. there we've got freeze warnings in effect through 9 a.m.
4:37 pm
locations in far northwest colorado down near the four corners in southwest parts of our state and a few of our valleys in our central mountains where temperatures do dip into the upper 20s and lower 30s. not quite that cold here in denver. we'll see 40 overnight tonight. winds, they'll die down. still gusty from time to time. it will take a few hours for those winds to camera down out here, but out of -- to calm down out here, but out of the southwest 10 to cloudy, a breeze, winds 5 to 15 out of the north. we'll keep you in the 60s wednesday. thursday we have much cooler air settling in, highs in the low 50s and a chance for mostly rain, but it is possible we could see a little bit of snow in the mix thursday morning. thursday afternoon looks like mostly rain. this is a forecast we really have to watch closely.
4:38 pm
we'll be updating that constantly as we get closer to thursday afternoon. friday that system clears out, low 60s for highs and then saturday into sunday here come the 70s on once again. so this cooloff that we have coming our way is really just a short term one. we've got 70s in the forecast through most of next week. this thursday is just the day to watch. ryan and kim, i got any eye on it. -- my eye on it. i'll any more of that snow that could possibly hit denver. >> the s word again. >> thursday. >> mark it on the calendar. >> everybody is looking forward to pulling out those sweaters sitting at home waiting to put them on. >> if we see mostly rain and it just gets cooler, i think we're still okay. i would just mark that day with a star just so you're mindful of it so everybody can be safe because we know how it gets around here when we see snow

>> armageddon. thanks, becky. baseball history lovers will till october 15th to complex out an exhibit on the greeley grays baseball team at adams university in alamosa. >> the exhibit feature everything from old uniforms to gloves and stories of the mostly latino and hispanic stories who made up the greeley grays. the team was formed by members of la colonia of four latino western sugar country. the stories of the grays and colony has been documented nearly two decades and now the work is being recognized by the smithsonian. >> the one thing we've been learning is latinos have been involved in baseball since the very, very beginning both on community leagues to minor leagues to the major leagues. negro leagues even.
4:40 pm
we didn't know what to expect. it was our friends that said this is big. you got to be excited. so then we started getting excited. >> when the smithsonian rings, you better get excited. >> the smithsonian project is called latinos in baseball and the goal is to create a traveling exhibit that can go across the country and that's awesome, people always united what the latino community did for baseball and that the greeley grays had something to do with it, neat. 50 years at nbc, tom brokaw, an old dog, learning some new tricks.

i like this because kids can't get their hands down in inside. it's much safer that way. so 110 degrees below zero. if you have one of these cylinders and add just a little soap to it, watch what we can do. this goes inside. as it starts to bubble, kim, watch this. those bubbles begin to rise. take your hands and grab onto them. watch what happens when you squeeze the bubble. squeeze. the only problem is i can't stop it. so it will just keep going and going these are fog filled bubbles. i could keep you going forever, but there's more to do with dry ice. over here i have these two cylinders and have taken the equivalent of red cabbage juice. look at these in here. carbon dioxide is actually an acid. so if i drop these down inside here, wasp the color changes. -- watch the color changes. as it goes down, look at the color change. isn't that beautiful? look at the color change over there and this one over here

change color and bubble all because it's an acid or acid base indicator, so an easy thing to be able to do. >> it is? >> can i just show you this last little magic trick? >> yes. >> don't take your eyes off. see the yellow liquid here? the yellow goes in and magically turns red. it looks like we're playing chemistry. if you want to change it back, add some dry ice. watch what happens. we drop the dry watch that little bubbling reaction that takes place and all of a sudden as it starts to bubble, it looks like it's not as red as it s before and it starts to change and change and it comes back to that orange yellow we started with at -- to that original yellow we started with at the very beginning. >> halloweenscience.com. >> i have all the stuff there to make it safe, fun and you'll create an unforgettable learning experience. kim will keep playing.

sir. did you get some ideas for the -- did you get some ideas for the halloween party? >> i did. my hands are fresh and clean with all the bubbles. >> that's it for us. 9news at 5:00 is next. next at 5:00 donald trump returns to colorado with two campaign stops along the front range within just hours. >> also ahead the most powerful atlantic storm in nearly islands. >> and the first ever united nations space mission using a spacecraft built by a company in colorado next on 9news. >> this is 9news. thousands of people are headed to the budweiser event center in loveland where republican presidential candidate donald trump is scheduled to speak in about an hour. it is his second stop today in colorado. 9news reporter victoria sanchez
