waking up to a freeze warnings. temperatures in the 40s and 50s. now, the -- a closer look, there you go, 40s around time. closer to the foothills, temperatures in the 30sand 20s. it is a cool morning, okay. 60s this afternoon up and down the i-25 corridor and cooler than that in higher elevations. yesterday was really gusty. gusts up to 70 in estes park. this morning, it is gusty in that same area. but throughout today, nothing like yesterday. the winds will be much calmer. doppler 9 is quiet across the state. we had snowfall yesterday in the mountains. and this morning, some of those stronger winds closer to the front range mountains are blowing some of that snow off of the mountain peaks and snow off the western slope. a drier day in store for us. for the kids this morning, grab

it gets colder as the week goes on. now let's take a look at our drive. >> belen, you were talking about the gusty winds. we will be seeing them this morning. this is facing westbound, you can see the camera continuing to shake with the strong gusty winds that we're experiencing this morning. difficulty especially with the high-profile vehicles this morning on i-70 as you're heading out to the high country. we have a stalled vehicle on accident at ken caryl and 470. that traffic is still flowing through just fine. it is off to the side. corey. >> thank you, tracy. a bus driver accused of taking prescription drugs and flipping her school bus with students inside will find out her sentence today. jessica oh is here this morning. the driver pled guilty to one charge but got several others

about the crash investigation that led prosecutors to drop all but one charge for careless driving. she could face a $300 fine and probation. this case was supposed to go to trial but prosecutors and attorneys worked out a plea deal. the 40-year-old bus driver went off the road, veered baca cross highway 7 and slammed into a mountain side, causing the school bus to roll on its side. several students were hurt. she was arrested for driving under the suspicion of drugs but her attorney said that she was taking medications prescribed by a doctor because of fibromyalgia. a doctor and nurse also said she did not seem impaired at the hospital. again, all but one charge against elizabeth burris has been dismissed. today she will learn her sentence for the one remaining charge. she lost her job with the school district after the

on a car crashing spree is going to face a judge today. investigators a 57-year-old deborah daniels side swiped four vehicles and rear-ended an escalade and stole that escalade when the driver got out to look at the damage. daniels eventually crashed that car and was arrested and taken to the hospital. she faces a slew of charges, including drunk driving. and a sentence. the boulder daily camera published the arrest records after a delay from the judge. in the documents, investigators say that 16-year-old jeffrey collins admitted to using a stick to assault the woman. the teenager had offered collins and another teen a place to say. collins attacked the woman and

later. the 16-year-old was charged as an adult. at last check, the woman was in icu with serious head injuries. a mama cued of killing her husband with the four children inside the home is heading to court. she is accused of shooting her husband in denver on september 25th. she is facing first degree murder charges plus four counts of child abuse. an entire community is evacuated. a wildfire it's the fire burning in southern colorado. we have been tracking this fire overnight. the fire has already burned thousands of acres. >> yes, it has, cheryl. in one day it has torched 5,000 acres. here are some of the images coming across twitter. i want to give you a better look at these. the flames spread so quickly. look at the acreage just burned right there. you can see where the land is

afternoon. by 10:00 last night, the pueblo county sheriff recommended that the entire valley be evacuated. that is home to about 1,000 people. the sheriff warned if people waited to leave, they may lose access to safe evacuation routes. sheriff kirk taylor warned, quote, this fire is on both sides of the valley and we may lose lives. so far 7 structures have been lo cooler temperatures to help fight the fire overnight. investigators have not been able to tell what sparked the fire. they are trying to get it under control and focus on getting it out. they're hoping for less wind in that area today. it would certainly be a help. belen. >> and the forecast for today is trending towards calmer winds in comparison to yesterday, tarhonda. no ron der that the fire was easily to spread when we were under a red flag warning.

of 70 miles per hour. loveland, applewood, empire, gusts up to 50 to 60 miles per hour. the cooler temperatures also settled in. the temperature map shows temperatures in the high country about 20 degrees or so cooler from 24 hours ago. here in the metro area, we're about 13 degrees cooler from 24 hours ago. but it will be a nice fall day. highs today will be in the 60s. it will get colder later this week up. gary. >> thank you, belen. 5:37 right now. so hurricane matthew is strong and it is on the move. the category 4 hurricane is moving through the tropics right now and it may be turning toward the united states' east coast. the storm is already bringing winds up to 145 miles per hour to haiti. the center of the storm expected to pass over the southwestern tip of that country later this morning. organizers are worried that

into humanitarian crisis in the nation. matthew is one of the most powerful hurricanes to hit the region in nearly a deck ate. forecasters say it is too early to know where it could hit along the east coast of the u.s. but the governor of north carolina has already declared a state of emergency for some farming areas in that state. crops there were already damaged by heavy rains last month. the national hurricane center in miami says the stm shifting a little bit closer to florida. we just have to wait and see the track it takes. turning to politics, a survey shows four of every ten americans do not know the names of the vice president den candidates. they are tim kaine and mike pence of course. tonight they are hoping to change that statistic. the only and own vice presidential debate is tonight in virginia. the two men will debate starting at 7:00.

timed segments of ten minutes each. you can watch that debate here on 9 news. tim kaine will be here next week for an appearance and concert in denver. he will stop by the western complex with dave matthews on monday. tim kaine's last visit was in august. ticket information is on 9news.com. republican presidential candidate donald trump was in loveland yesterday for a huge rally at the budweiser event center. trump addressed the recent reports saying that he avoided payi t saying what he did was legal, brilliant, and proof that he is the only one who knows enough about taxes to fix a broken system. >> i understand the tax laws better than almost anyone, which is why i am the one who can fix them. and that is what i commit to you. >> trump has not released his tax returns, claiming that an ongoing audit prevents him from doing so.

for the denver right program. the census bureau puts denver at one of the fastest growing areas in the country. that means a lot of change on the way. leaders will hold workshops to get input on the changes. they want to know what people prefer in terms of transportation, parks and other amenities. people can give input online as well. costco could be ordered to pay up after a federal judge says the company copied tiffany jewelry designs. the judge giant asked vendors to make engagement rings that look like tiffany's rings and went on to sell them under the brand tiffany. the judge says that costco should pay up to $5.5 million in damages. neither company has a comment right now on this case. happening today, the u.s. supreme court will take on aaer- long dispute. it's a patent dispute between apple and samsung. the court will hear arguments
