continuing public safety threat. classes this evening and other campus operations are continuing on a normal schedule. the safety of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors is always our top priority. i want to thank everyone who responded quickly and calmly to the cu boulder alert regarding today's incidents. it is a sobering reminder of how we must be prepared to act and i encourage all members of our unity to think through how they might respond calmly and safely in situations like we experienced today. i want to express my deep appreciation to emergency personnel both from the campus and the community who brought the situation to a quick resolution. the willingness of our first responders that placed themselves in dangerous situations for the safety of

their selflessness and their training. for anyone impacted by today's incident, i encourage you to engage the support and resources available on campus. thank you. i'd like to turn it over to chief zak. >> good afternoon. at approximately 9:15 this morning a patient that was receiving treatment at the sports medicine facility encountered a man with lot. the manmade threatening and harassing statements to our patient. at which time the patient entered the champion center and went to the second floor. our suspect continued to follow our patient up to the second floor which generated multiple radio calls to the city and to cupd dispatch of a man armed with a machete inside the champion center. cupd officers and bpd officers
4:05 pm
subsequently the manmade his way through several stairwells. between the fourth and fifth stairwell, cupd and bpd together encountered the individual in which they ordered the individual to drop the machete and he did not drop it at which time an officer involved shooting occurred. prior to the arrival of our officers, a female staff member inside of the champion center also encountered the individual inside of the stairwell. she immediately recognizhi as an active harmer situation and generated a 911 call to cupd dispatch. several of our emergency management teams messaged the campus about an active harmer incident occurring and to take protective measures. once the officer involved shooting occurred, officers and deputies secured the area and awaited for the arrival of the boulder county critical

conduct the investigation surrounding today's incident. at this time cupd and bpd will not comment on the ongoing nature of this investigation because boulder county investigative team has assumed the oversight both into the crime impacting the initial victim in the parking lot as well as the discharging of the firearms between cupd and bpd. within the past month, cupd has inside the athletics facility on active harmer and what to do in the event of an active harmer event inside the facility. routinely they do these presentations across our campus and within these year we have done over 1200 presentations. both of our officers remain on administrative leave pending the outcome of the officer involved shooting and within

to staff, faculty, and students who are experiencing some trauma associated with this event. as many of you know about 1:00 this afternoon both the cupd dispatch and boulder city dispatch received multiple radio calls of an active harmer inside of a starbucks facility that was inside the umc or the starbucks on the hill, based upon the multiple radio calls send a rave message about a potential active harmer inside the umc. when our students, staff, and faculty observed our officers entering the umc armed with protective gear, people elected to self-evacuate which caused a lot of chaos for the community. based upon that information, we did again send in another rave

ongoing threat. as chancellor did indicate, the umc does remain closed. it is safe, however, given the self-evacuation of our visitors inside of the facility, we need time to be able to return those belongings to the things that were left behind. >> good afternoon. i'm greg tessta with the city to add. as this event initially unfolded, both cu police department and dispatch center. >> so that sorts out some of the questions people have had earlier today. this incident happened in the champion center. we hear the man being shot in the parking lot. i think some people believe that encounter only happened in the parking lot when it sounds like police are saying this man with a machete went into the champion center. >> they found him in the fourth
4:09 pm
him. both cu police and boulder police encountered this man in the stairwell and asked him to drop the weapon. he does not, and that is when there is a police shooting. officers fire, killing this person. what happened in those moments, we don't know yet. certainly scary day today on that campus. >> i think some people believed then that concern later on this afternoon maybe they were connected. but somehow the information about the initial incident was relayed and then people report other things. sounds like they are two separate incidents. they got several calls from somebody with a weapon at the starbucks in the umc. that is when they chose to send out the alerts and send a response. but they are saying no threat, no problems. they did not find anything. however, they are keeping it closed until they take care of everything. >> pretty frightening for
4:10 pm
starbucks. luckily everything is okay this afternoon. and now it's just a matter of getting things back into order on campus. let's get a check of your weather now because it's been a crazy day in terms of the weather as well. danielle some changes today. >> we've been watching the clouds starting to stream in. you can see the camera over looking downtown denver. not only are we looking at the clouds but some haze out there. just because we have a controlled burn that is going on in parts that has kicked up quite a bit of smoke even in the 9 backyard. a little tough to breathe. you can see another one of our cameras just showcasing that we still are watching the clouds rolling in as well as the next storm system. a cold front dragging throughout the area will potentially cool us off quite a bit and bring us a little wet weather. we had a little bit of early morning snow up in the mountain. and we are finding some of that along the continental divide.
4:11 pm
arrives after midnight and we have winter weather advisories posted for the northern and central mountains. it's been a comfortable afternoon in the metro area. mid 60s. a nice break from the heat. 70-degree numbers across the eastern springs from sterling to springfield. about 47 in leadville. the winds have been kicking up ahead of this front. you can see easily 20-30 miles per hour gusts up in the mountains and especially across the southern tier of the state to just the way we like it. temperatures cooling off ever so slightly. within the next couple of hours we will watch the clouds increasing throughout the evening and then kim and ryan once tomorrow rolls around, that is when we will be smacked in the face with really cold temperatures and the possibility i think mainly just rain around the metro area. but if you go up in elevation, that is where you will find a little bit more.
4:12 pm
thanks, danielle. >> you bet. florida's governor is advising people who live along the atlantic coast to get out if they can. governor rick scott says the state could be looking at its biggest evacuation ever because of hurricane matthew. it's threatening almost the entire eastern coast of the state. the hurricane has already damaged homes and farms throughout southwest haiti. at least 11 people have died. >> reporter: good evening. we're in nassau here in the bahamas everybody is preparing for hurricane matthe approaches from the south. all of the local businesses and the people here, they are very well prepared. we're just waiting on the storm to get here. still fairly calm. conditions are expected to deteriorate as we enter the over night hours. there has been wind damage and storm surge issues. here and we're on the wolf road location at a shell gas station
4:13 pm
me that they have saran wrapped the pumps to show the pumps are off. we really expect matthew the core of math you to move through tomorrow afternoon and you know, the nassau has not been hit in several years from a hurricane of this magnitude. the last time they took a hit was in 1992 so they damage, storm surge and flooding on the island. but the residents seem very prepared. the tourists are gone. the airport is closed. everybody is all eyes and ears on hurricane matthew. robert white has fielded difficult questions about police brutality, racism, and violence today from a room full of sixth graders.

students. students demanded answers that the chief wanted to answer. >> reporter: of all the people concerned about police relations. >> i'm here. i want to thank you for the invitation. >> reporter: chief wanted to meet with students like martinez and appear on the voices of mt. bellow pod cast. >> when we heard he was coming, we were like, this is a great opportunity to show that we care about >> our police officers don't fairly treat everybody the same. >> reporter: chief white knows there is problems. >> i would like to bring the police department and the community closer together. >> the students are observing racism exists. >> and that is the problem we have with policing today. they are involved in shootings and they are legal in the shootings but the question becomes was it really necessary to do that? >> reporter: white does not want kids to be afraid of the badge and uniform.

4:17 pm
now $600. today we learned the centers for medicare services can say medicare spent $1.3 billion on epipens. those rebates send some money back to the government. cms told them today miland misclassified the drug as generic for years. and because of that, they failed to give millions the medicaid and medicare services. a lot of this is a bit complicated. the federal government and the u.s. senate now believe they have caught miland doing something very, very wrong. this opens the door for states like colorado to get millions back. i was just on the phone with the office in colorado here, they are definitely looking into this and a long road to get to before we get to that point. more bad news at the end for the maker of the epipen.
4:18 pm
what can they do? what is the next step for them? >> they will be going to cms and asking questions can we get some of this money back? minnesota figured out last year in 2015 they paid more than $4 million because of this rebate that they should have gotten back. $4million for minnesota. you have to figure it's the same kind of numbers for a state like colorado. >> problems continue. thank you. before we head to break. we want you to know we will keep listening in no threat to students or staff at the cu campus right now. there is an all clear. they have not found any active harmer on campus. they have discussed the incident earlier today where a man was shot that he made some threats inside the champion center. but they are going to get more detail about the warnings that went out today. no threat, no concern on the cu campus right now. champion center umc remains

police and campus police fired at that suspect and he was killed. he passed away from his injuries. and then there was reports of some kind of a threat at the umc. that has been alkalid at this -- that has been all cleared at this point. there was concerns that someone was making threats. we do not believe it was a shooter. both places are closed down. police have been sorting through all of this. our reporter has been listening to everytng and christine, first of all, parents don't need to worry at this point. >> reporter: that is the good

4:37 pm
going on. officials have deemed the campus safe. there is again no continuing public threat here at cu boulder. we did hear from the chancellor during this press conference tonight. he called this a sobering reminder of how quickly this kind of thing can happen. he was praising the way that the staff had handled this, the way the student handled this and earlier in the school year they don't see any sort of back to you. >> all right. absolutely. scary stuff. i know there is so much to sort through. and again not related these two incidents. they believe they are not related at all. >> reporter: they believe they are not related and it seems like a sick irony that both of these situations would happen on the same day one happening at 9:00 in the morning. one happening around 1:00. now that we're approaching 4:30- 5:00 all is deemed safe out here. >> real quick, did police say anything about who the person
