police followed eventually shooting and killing him inside of a stairwell. a few hours later police rushed to the university memorial center after receiving 911 calls. turns out there was no credible threat there. 9 news reporter christine nokl is in boulder. a wild and frightening day for students and staff there. >> reporter: it certainly has been, ryan. certainly a chaotic day here at cu boulder. campus officials have deemed the us no ongoing public safety threat out here. in the past hour, investigators and campus officials held a press conference to debrief the media as to what was going on. one was a legitimate concern, the second one was a hoax that led to a whole lot of concern. let's break this down. the first one around 9:00 a.m.. police received several 911 calls with a man with a machete in the champion center. the suspect had an altercation

building. officers with boulder and campus police arrived on scene. they repeateddedly demanded that the man put down the weapon. he did not. two officers, one from each responding agency fired shots. that man was killed. nobody else on campus was injured. we don't know the identity of that suspect. now to what police are calling an active harmer situation that happened around 1:00 this afternoon. campus police evacuated the umc building on campus officials deemed that to be a hoax. 20 minutes later cu tweeted there were uncommuted folks. hundreds of students and staff and visitors were evacuate maryland -- were evacuated. >> we looked up and these three huge guys ran in. >> police officers. >> yeah. and they had these huge guns and started screaming everyone

and they screamed everyone get out of the building. >> i was headed to the umc and i saw a lot, practically every kids coming from every building running in different directions away from campus all at once. >> reporter: police spoke with us a half hour ago and said this is a sobering reminder that this thing can happen anywhere and staff and students need to be on prepared. officials have deemed that the campus is safe. of course a lot of chaos that still needs to be sifted through regarding both investigations. but again, more details as the days come. ryan. >> certainly the investigation only just beginning but the good news is that the students and staff are safe and sound tonight. christine, thanks. hurricane matthew has become the strongest atlantic hurricane in a decade.

south eastern u.s. have started to evacuate. matthew first overred over haiti in the tip of cuba and heading to the bahamas. state leaders from florida to the carolinas are warning people to prepare for the worst. >> with the storm going up our coast, a small deviation. >> we territory yet. we are still moving as the storm moves. >> the storm is huge. it carries a state larger than -- it covers an area larger than the state of texas. there is a chance it could move farther west. kathy, what part of makes this storm so dangerous is its

the great lakes. it's not nearly as strong. and then of course we have high pressure offshore in the atlantic. and that also creates some moments. these upper atmosphere features are fluctuating and so is matthew. this system hit jamaica hard, hit haiti very hard, and now florida and georgia and the carolinas bracing for epic flooding and large storm surgery. now a category three storm winds at 120 miles per hour north of jacksonville go offshore again. all the models coming together now to show it not staying offshore from florida but moving inland between miami and jacksonville clipping the carolinas and moving back out to sea again. some of the highlights with this storm include the bah has mas. hurricane warnings out for

comfortable temperatures in the 60s but colder air coming our way and that is certainly something we will be monitoring for you throughout the evening tonight. as a matter of fact, we will continue to watch the clouds increase. some areas will be looking at rain over night with the snow level going to 7500 feet. temperatures between now and 7:00 in the mid 60s and adele, we will let you know which areas will wake up to snow tomorrow and we have wonderful warmup. so there is a lot to talk about. >> there sure is. thanks. the beulah hill fire shrunk over night. eight homes and 16 other buildings have been destroyed since the fire started. this morning fire officials say homes were still threatened and the fire is 0% contained.

the chef of blackbird was a man that was shot and killed saturday night in engel wood. lewis was a chef of blackbird house. investigators are asking anyone who might have information to call metro denver crime op people killed in car crashes the number of them went up. 10.4% in the first six months of this year. the transportation department has plan to lower the number of people killed to zero within three decades. there was 18,000 deaths. safety experts blame it on a better economy. more people can afford to travel and they are. today the transportation department, the national safety council, and other safety

goal of eliminating u.s. traffic deaths and injuries within the next 30 years. >> our spike in 2015 was actually the highest spike in the past 50 years which is not good. i think that surprised a lot of us. so we need to refocus our efforts on that. >> those groups say self- driving vehicles and other advanced technologies could prevent traffic deaths. it also puts emphasis of drivin using seat belts. another part of the plan has increased campaigns against drunk and distracted driving. a loud night on the debate stage in the first and only vice presidential debate in virginia last night. there was plenty of bickering between tim kaine and mike pence. still trump was pleased with pence's performance. calling it phenomenal.

hi there. outside very cloudy and smoky backyard there is a controlled burn that has come to an end at the rocky mountain arsenal and over 200 acres. if you are wondering where the smoke and haze is coming from, that is it. take a look outside. we have smoke and haze around the country. 66 in denver today. 77 in lamar and cool 77 in leadville. we have yet to see the first freeze even with that freeze warning last night but we're in that zone where it's time to start thinking about getting the sprinklers blown out and winterizing your car.

it's dry about 17%. outside the studios we have mid 60s closer to downtown. we are tracking a storm system that is coming our way from the northwest. so in southern colorado bright blue skies. a beautiful afternoon. rocky mountain park we've had reports of snow. winter advisory out about 8,000 feet. the snow level for denver will stay shower event than a snow event tomorrow morning. main core system stays to the north of us. front comes through in the next 12-18 hours or so. ushering in a cooler air mass. high temperatures will be in the mid 50s. dangerous hurricane matthew a category three storm. winds to 120 miles per hour. looks to be moving inland closer to jacksonville. now sideswiping the carolinas and moving back out to sea. the erratic storm track makes

forecast. we'll have updates later tonight on 9 news. cool air will move in behind the front tomorrow so we are done with the warm weather. you notice the cloud weather intact. rain snowline right around 7500 feet. scattered snow showers with a lot of accumulations in the mountains. lows in the 20s for the mountains. 30s on the plains. some 40s down south. and we are not anticipating a last night. temperatures tomorrow not overly warm unless you are watching us in southern colorado. front range foothill temperatures 50 in idaho springs and 43 in grand lake. in the denver metro area. smoke and haze. isolated showers. tomorrow cloudy and cooler. chance for a few lighthouse early and then again in the afternoon but don't cancel any outdoor activities yet.
