then another scare after that. >> he received a bronze star and purple heart. now a soldier from fort carson has made the ultimate sacrifice for his country in afghanistan. >> three very big and very expensive rvs stolen, account exactly easy to hide. maybe you can help find them. >> and the eve of america's biggest beer celebration here in denver. so why are some local breweries taking a pass on the great american beer festival? 9news starts now. by this time tomorrow night the u.s. could be hours away from a direct hit of a major hurricane in 4,000 days. hurricane matthew is a category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 115 miles per hour moving over the bahamas tonight. hurricane warnings are out for the northeast coast of florida. jacksonville has its first hurricane warning in 17 years.

the eye which is very small, only 15 miles wide or the distance from denver to golden. however, the overall size of this storm is massive, about the size of texas, and it will be the strongest hurricane to threaten the southeast since 2005. it has devastated the islands it has hit so far. roads have washed away in haiti making it impossible for rescue teams to reached towns which are believed to be destroyed. the eastern most city in cuba is barely recognizable after taking a direct hit. in the u.s. t leave the coast. the big concern is this storm surge expected compounded by up to a foot of rain. in just a few minutes we'll update the storm path which continues to change and look at why matthew is so unusual. investigators believe a man shot and killed by police on the cu boulder campus today was a recently discharged marine in his early 20s. 9wants to know spoke with the source familiar with the

marine walked up to a woman's car in the champion center this morning. he wrote reference to the 10 commandments on one of the car's windows. the man went inside the building and threatened people with a long blade. our source said it was more like a sword and not like a machete as police described today. police confronted him in a stairwell. when he refused to drop the weapon, the officers >> given the weapon the suspect was armed with, the statements made to the victim and the nature of how he was maneuvering through the champion center, we believed it was in the best interest of the university and it was a deadly force situation. >> the coroner's office is not identifying the man killed yet and we don't know his intentions. the shooting was a prelude to more chaos on campus today. several hours later two more alert went out about a potential threat on the cu

that led to hundreds of students fleeing the university memorial center. those reports turned out to be false. 9news reporter noel brennan spoke with students at the university today. lots of rumors played it tough for the university and -- made it tough for the university and police to do their jobs. >> reporter: dealing with all those rumors have clearly been a challenge for the university, so much so they went to facebook and addressed each rumor one by one, rumors that someone heard ot ammunition had been found and even rumors that someone somehow hacked into the university text message alert system. cu says none of that stuff happened, but as all the rumors spread this afternoon hundreds of people waited outside the umc to get back inside and retrieve their stuff after that false report of a shooter. >> cookies, cookies. >> reporter: free cookies, a

450 to $778,000. they got some surveillance video of the theft. these rvs you can entering and then leaving the lot. >> there was obviously a plan. this was a well thought over plan. it wasn't someone that just came in in the night and decided to steal a motor home. >> the rv store has filed a police report with frederick police. anyone with information is asked to call them. a semi hit a woman on i-70 several hours this afternoon and evening near watkins. this accident happened around 3:30 this afternoon near the manila road exit between watkins and bennett. the colorado state patrol said the woman pulled over to switch places with her passenger. that's when the semi hit her and her vehicle. the woman was airlifted to the hospital where she died. the westbound lanes were closed several hours. a highly decorated fort

staff sergeant adam thomas was killed yesterday by an ied. he was assigned to company b second battalion 10th special forces group airborne. staff sergeant thomas joined the army in 2008 and was a bronze star and purple heart recipient. received multiple army commendation medals, national defense service medal and others. a good amount of progress that destroyed eight home earlier this week -- homes this week in southern colorado. the beulah fire is now 50% contained. it started monday and burned more than 5,000 acres. plenty of you called and e- mailed us today to ask what all the smoke in the metro area was about. the prescribed burn at the rocky mountain national wildlife refuge led to bad air quality. two areas near 56th and peoria and another area south of lake

of smoking skies and burning eyes, there are some positive effects. it will help generate native grasses, reduce weeds and improve the area for animals. hurricane matthew will continue to be a headline for the rest of the week. since records started in the mid-1800s a category 4 or 5 has never come ashore on the east coast of florida north of the georgia border. the only major hurricane to hit the east coast of 1950. matthew would be the first hurricane to strike the u.s. mainland in over a decade and it comes late in the season. we talked to one of csu's ahead meteorologists about the reason this storm is getting so much attention. >> reporter: matthew is moving more west toward florida, what we've seen the last couple days. that warning from florida's governor as hurricane matthew, a unique late season storm, threatens the sunshine state.

meteorology project has been watching closely. >> i think the thing that's unusual about this storm is typically storms that hit florida during october tend to hit the west coast, the most recent example hurricane wilma in 2005. >> reporter: that was the last year a major hurricane category 3 or above struck the u.s. mainland. matthew could be the first since dennis, katrina, rita and wilma. there have been no major strikes in the pass 11 years. that's >> the projected eye of the storm is extremely close to florida now. >> there's been storms out in the atlantic. it just hasn't come ashore. the seasons have been about average. 1 benefit we have had is we tend to have an area of low pressure along the east coast which helps take storms that are approaching and steering them out to sea. >> reporter: matthew's current path sun predictable, but

but already it's wreaked havoc on the islands. >> the caribbean season is very warm and if you can get the wind sheers and pressures and other patterns correct, you can get these types of very intense storms. >> hurricane activity tends to drop dramatically after about october 20th. one thing he says he's also watching is the possibility that after matthew moves up the coast the storm could loop around and move florida. lots of concern tonight. this is thank-- >> thank you, vicente. firefighters were called to put out a fire on a southwest plane caused by a replacement phone, one of the millions samsung sent to customers because some of the original phones were catching fire. the owner of the galaxy note 7

and heard a pop and saw smoke coming from it. airlines recall telling people to turn off the phones before takeoff. there are events happening all over denver ahead of tomorrow's official start of the great american beer festival. there is a full slate outside the convention hall each day. the main event will feature four sexes during the next three days with more than -- sessions during the next three days breweries in the colorado convention center. the brews will compete in hundreds of categories. each session lasts about four hours. if you want to try to drink 1 ounce of each beer, you'd need to drink one four seconds. that doesn't work. breweries figured outside events are catching on because they give people more time to sip and save. the director believes more -- and savor.

>> it's mostly keeping a focus on our local neighborhood and local patrons. >> all of our beer is delivered in my little blue subaru. there's a lot of breweries and it's also costly with product and everything else. >> reporter: neither will be tapping at this year's festival, a place that will land their beers in front of the eyes and lips of 60,000 people. >> a brewery focused on staying local and pouring out of the it's hard to afford and doesn't align with their vision. entry to the festival is $250 and you need to supply all the beer free of charge. >> return on investment is something we had to look at. we're a small brewery. we have a small production with a real busy tap room. >> reporter: for some the big stage isn't necessary.

an apartment complex in denver has sold for a record price, perhaps an indicator of where we stand in terms of hot real estate in the country. the breakers resort sold for $350 million, the most ever for an apartment complex in the state. our partners at the denver business journal say the comple is the second most expensive complex in the country to be sold this year. the only one to top it is in manhattan. experts say 15 years ago no investment group would have invested 100 million on a single property in denver let alone 350 million. the breakers sold then for $230,000 for each unit. >> unbelievable. two big shows headed to denver won't hit the stage until well into next year. still coloradans are getting

jovi will be at pepsi center march 14th. tickets will be on sale next week. faith hill is going back on tour with tim mcgraw august 1st at pepsi center. those tickets, too, go on sale next week. hey, ryan, i can still smell the haze and smoke in the air kind of evident over the city from that prescribed burn in commerce city today at rocky mountain arsenal. i'm meteorologist kathy sabine. we're tracking the wind which took most of the afternoon to disperse that smoke and haze out of the area. as a matter of fact, we do have a picture of that controlled burn up there in the commerce city area that did create a poor air quality scenario for us for a while. starting to see clouds lift over denver in advance of a cool front that will take temperatures into the mid-50s tomorrow. snow level about 7,500 feet with rain in the forecast

is september 8th and the average date october 7th. time to call your landscape company and get those sprinkler systems blown out. winds are northeast at 10, calm in the backyard, outside the studios mid-50s downtown. we're tracking an area of low pressure spinning north of us. it will bring in a cool front to add to the snowpack in the northern mountains where they've made snow fast and furious the past week or so. we could see another 2 to 5 inches of snow from steamboat, aspen crested butte. most of the precip and energy stays to the north of us. this front does have some cool air. we'll see the snow level hover around 7,500 feet tomorrow. the cool air will follow through and quite the severe weather event is likely outside of chicago in omaha down to the dallas area. hurricane matthew, a dangerous category 3 storm, expected to strengthen to category 4 status east of jacksonville, wind to 115 now. storm surge possibilities in

florida and georgia where hurricane warnings have been posted. it may clip the carolinas over the weekend and then move back out to shore, all the models coming into agreement. instead of sideswiping florida now it may move inland near the jacksonville area friday. we'll watch those closely. this is the first hurricane to strike florida since wilma in 2005 and it's now churning over the bahamas moving so slowly out of the northwest it continues to bring a heavy flooding rain threat to much of we have a few light showers expected in the morning and afternoon under mostly cloudy skies. we will see temperatures hold in the 50s. it will be a cool unsettled day with periods of snow over the i- 70 corridor and northern mountains. in the morning it will be cloudy. the snow line moves in through evergreen west of boulder, light showers in the city at 10 a.m. and return later in the day. cold in the mountains tonight, lows in the 20s, no freeze or
