highway 85 north of greeley. the snow in central colorado beginning to taper off as cooler, drier air is moving in west of aspen and pushing our way. above 8,000 feet is where the best snow will fall today. we'll get snow below that. above 8,000 feet, looking one to three inch snow. mostly grassy areas. north of black hawk central city, more like to five inches by the end of the day today. showers this morning. light showers hang we'll clear out around here. the rain this morning, not bad. a few places getting a quarter to up to a half inch of rain in the area today. the thing i want to focus on is, after we clear out this afternoon, we have a freeze warning in effect tonight through tomorrow morning. get ready folks. it's going to be freezing this time tomorrow morning. . speaking of freeze and ice,

and numerous accidents need to be cleared. i'll continue to monitor that situation and update you on i-70 eastbound in the high country. if we look at u.s. 6, we have an accident. you can see that it's rainy. we are dealing with wet roadways this morning. that accident is at us 6 eastbound and wadsworth. not causing major traffic delays. we're starting to see accidents pop up sooner than normal in gary? >> thanks much. two administrators in lions have been placed on leave as the town is subject of a federal investigation now. 9 news reporter has been looking into this and live in the information center this relates to how the town spent money on flood recovery >> yes, it does. the 2013 flood we all remember so well, they're recovering from it. they may not be going about it the right way.

yesterday afternoon. the town administrator and town clerk have been placed on temporary paid leave. according to the local paper there, it relates to how the town is spending millions in federal funding for flood recovery. authorities may be trying to confirm how town leaders went about the proper process and securing contracts for fema funded work. the homeland security found lions was not going through the gh it found the town was leasing equipment the town had not used. the town finished a park project before fema gave the stamp of approval. according to the newspaper, a lot of missteps occurred because the town wasn't familiar with fema guidelines. federal authorities haven't said what they were looking for or found when they searched offices yesterday. we'll have a public meeting and

>> thank you. students, faculty, police are hoping for a calmer day on campus after a man with a long knife and loud rumors put the campus on alert. wednesday morning t police shot and killed a man in the stairwell on campus when he would not drop a knife that looked like a sword. at first they thought it was a machete. it happened in the champion sent their how has the team's locker room and other administrative offices. reports a shooter that turned out to be a hoax. lling a driver in a road rage encounter says he didn't cause the accident. in june, the officer blair jackson was off duty when he crash into the pickup truck on highway 85 in platville. moreno's truck rolled, and he died at the scene. witnesses say they were tailgating cutting each other off before the crash.

vehicular homicide. according to court records, jackson says moreno caused the crash. the next train route is on its way toward opening. today, crews will do an emergency response drill along the g-line. they're preparing for a possible active shooter situation. that will be near the 41st and fox station. overall, rail testing on the new g-line started in february. the route will runhr ridge. earlier this year, rtv opened the new line nor airport and b-line to and from westminster. the g line is expected to hope soon. fire crews are making some progress, quite a bit actually, in fighting the fire in southern colorado. it's now 50% contained. it's burned more than 5,000-acres and eight homes. several homes are still threatened the fire did shrink down to 4800

back home last night. another round will be allowed back in at 10:00 this morning. winds could be a concern as 300 firefighters are still in the area. we checked in on the beaver creek fire in northern colorado. yes, it's still burning after nearly four months. fire crews have made a lot of progress and hope it will be out soon. it started in june near the wyoming border. it burned more than 38,000 acres. it's such a low priority, only monitoring it. they're hoping for first snow to put out the flames the wildfire is 78% contained and hope to have it fly contained by october 31st. in florida, gas stations are out of gasoline. the fort lauderdale airport is closed. many stores cannot keep bread and milk on the shelves n. south carolina, the long lines are past the stores and on the roads as people start evacuations. hurricane matthew is near the

the u.s. east coast. the category 3 storm is responsible for 25 deaths. many days into this storm, it's not getting weaker. in fact, it could get stronger. nbc is live from daytona beach with a look at the increasing threat. good morning sarah. >> reporter: good morning cheryl. lots of certains about that storm strengthening as it inches toward the this melbourne, daytona beach area. there are evacuation orders from florida up through carolinas. this is the biggest storm we've seen headed towards our area in more than a decade. a slight diversion in the path could significantly impact this area causing widespread devastation. many people here aren't taking any chances. along the southeast coast, it's time to pack and get out. >> smartest thing to do is

>> reporter: 12 million people could be in the path of hurricane matthew n. florida, this could be the biggest evacuation in state history. governor scott issued a dire warning. >> this could kill you. we can not save you. >> people along the coast filling up their tanks. some say fuel is hard to find. a state of emergency in florida, georgia, carolinas. in south carolina, both lanes of freeway traffic are diverted away from vulnerable areas. >> my plan is head to columbia an wait out the storm and hopefully come back and be glad i left. >> reporter: millions of people are racing to get out of the storm's path while matthew moves closer and closer to the coast. according to the latest track, the worst of that storm is expected to move over this daytona beach area sometime late tonight through friday afternoon. we'll all be keeping our eyes on that local schools, businesses, government buildings all closed

live in daytona beach, share t back to you. >> i was thinking the economic impact. not just people leaving homes but businesses having to shut down for we don't know how much days. so interesting. thank you sarah. in florida, there's no safe harbor when it comes to hurricanes. this map from noah shows the path of every hurricane to hit florida in the past century. here's what happens when you had in tropical it's hard to tell, but florida is still under there somewhere. the only safe time from storms in this state is during late winter and early spring. just small windows of time. in the past century, the sunshine state has not registered tropical storms or hurricanes in january, march, april. let's take the latest look at satellite and radar imagery. easy to see that eye south of nassau or bahamas.

winds. it's a category 3 storm. a forecast to strengthen to near category 4 status. 145 miles per hour sustained winds towards the coast of florida by early tomorrow morning. could make landfall tomorrow morning and go along the coast inland as a 3 to 4. move along the coast over the course of the weekend. finally curving out sunday morning. rain is a big issue. storm surge several feet. rain upwards to a foot or foot and a happen. this is a devastating storm. even if it doesn't make landfall, it's going to be a devastating storm. >> picturing what you're saying. >> 5:40 now. too many beer to try them all. it's a dream maybe a nightmare

. 3800 different beer and 750 breweries all in one place. four sessions for beer lovers to tackling every beer in the convention center. each session lasts four hours. if you tried every beer, you would have to drink one every four seconds. don't do it. it's not just about beer fans. breweries enter those 3800 beers in hundreds of categories to bring home awards and big time bragging rights the beer fest kicks off today. people from all over the country come to denver for all things craft beer.

lot of profit to participate. >> it's costly with product and everything else. >> chris says his brewery is less than a year old. he's worried about being able pply enough beer for all taste tests. he still delivers in his own subaru. that's not a lot of kegs. the colorado school of mimes is getting into crowd funding. not to fund the school but help pay for projects and professors. the school is launching the website called gold mine. it launched this week and has seven projects listed. including everything from engineering work in nepal to building a mime's tiny house. unlike crowd funding sites, it will donate the money to those projects without fees and regardless of whether they meet their goals. most expensive apartment complex in denver is barely within the city's borders.

late this afternoon. moderate to heavy rain for western nebraska and north eastern colorado. it's going to be quite cool around here through the afternoon and evening tonight. a wet start. we start clearing out by noon. it's still showering late this afternoon up around fort collins. wet roadways to start the morning. that has caused an accident on u.s. 6 and wadsworth. you can see some of those police lights flashing. that accident in the being cleaned up. still though starting early morning delays. that's as you head eastbound on u.s. 6 after wads worth. we have another accident reported near highland's ranch. this also on wads worth. this is near northbound and chat view avenue. already a couple early morning accidents. we'll continue to battle the

greeley area. this cold front has created a lot of snow overnight that's beginning to wrap up in western colorado and on the back edge of the cold air, drier air through the afternoon. we'll see clearing here on the front range through the morning into this amp. there's nothing behind it the next several days. we have showers this morning. by late this afternoon, we'll begin to see clearing around here with light showers going in northern colorado until very late in the day. north of fort showers going there. this morning, wet snow sticking to grassy areas. best accumulation above 8,000 feet. we could see it down to 6500. 50s here today with 40s in the mountains and foothills. snow this morning that will shift north. moderate to heavy rain in north eastern colorado during the afternoon. really could be heavy with anywhere from half an inch to an inch of rain in that part of the

northeast and mountains. warmer down south and out west. here today, looking at morning showers clearing this afternoon. mid-50s tonight. it's a freeze for here on the front range. tomorrow, we warm back up. still on track for a warm, dry weekend. . out in the high country, update on i-70 reopened. near frisco, they're letting cars and vehicles through. it was closed because of accidents and icy roadways. there are traction laws in effect. if you're heading out to high country, you need four wheel drive, snow and mud tires. loveland pass as well has the traction laws in place. you're going to battle the weather elements the you're heading out west to high country. here across the metro area, we're dealing with rain. already had an accident on u.s. 6 eastbound almost cleaned up now. we also have another accident

. right now eastbound i-70 is back open at silver thorn. there have been a lot of crashes there which is why it had been closed for a time. look over that red live symbol on the bottom of your screen. you can see the snow falling there reflecting in the the issue though is the snow that's accumulated on the road and slick layer underneath it. traction laws are in effect for both directions of i-70 between veil pass and copper mountain. all passenger vehicles required to show mud tires or chains this the point. same thing for u.s. loveland pass this morning. this had been closed because of so many crashes. it since reopened. we'll keep an eye on it. it's kind of messy. in the metro, going to be a wet
