attention to what the school and police are putting out directly. >> certainly a lot of confusion yesterday, a little bit of clarity today. thanks, nelson. the douglas county sheriff's detective who nearly died after being shot by a suspect is now home from the hospital. detective dan brite was responding to a call about a suicidal man armed with a rifle. there was a chase and more shots were fired and suspect randall roddick was killed. a few hours before the incident roddic's wife called the douglas county sheriff's department saying he was suicidal. there have been several blood drives. get out is the message from authorities in florida preparing for hurricane matthew. this is a live picture from west palm beach florida. it is expected to hit nearly the entire length of florida's atlantic coast starting

devastating category 4 hurricane with winds topping 140 miles an hour. more than 100 people have been killed in the caribbean, mostly in haiti. a channel between the barrier islands, reporter allison barber is there covering this storm. >> reporter: most of the inlet is cleared out, but the person who owns this house was here about five minutes ago. he was just finishing up some final touches to try and get everything secured and then was leaving headed to gainesville. he said he had another property not far from here. one thing he said he was most concerned with was getting back on the island after it's done. the tide is coming a lot closer. it's not here yet, but there is certainly still a lot of cause for concern. allison barber. most people parks in

heading on the campaign trail with donald trump. donald trump and ryan are expected at a rally in wisconsin saturday. that's ryan's home state. that's important because it ?? took ryan a while to endorse donald trump. he's been publicly critical on trump's ban on muslims and failure to file tax returns. governor scott walker and senator ron johnson will al one of hillary clinton's ads focuses on the needs of children and their families and calls out on donald trump. the add will air in florida, north carolina, iowa and more states. earlier in the campaign clinton said she would not spend more money on tv ads in colorado. at that point she was higher than trump, but a cnn poll has

the latest quinnipiac poll has clinton leading by two points now. the trump campaign will place quite a more ads but it will take a while to catch to clinton's spending of $113 million through this week compared to just over 27 million for the trump campaign. clinton has on her spending. clinton is outspending trump and his allies $166 million to $144 million. the next presidential debate sunday will have coursework integrated into it to enhance the experience for students. the university has added

the fix may have made it worse. the faa and the consumer product safety commission have launched an investigation into samsung. a phone seemed to catch fi board a flight in kentucky yesterday. the owner of the phone says it was a new replacement model of the galaxy note 7. he got it after his original phone was part of that worldwide recall last month. here's nbc's tom costello. >> reporter: this is the phone that forced the emergency evacuation of southwest airlines flight 994 wednesday. >> smoke in the cabin on the ramp, at the gate and terminal ramp. >> reporter: it all started

down his galaxy note 7 before the plane ever left the gate. >> just placed the phone in my pocket. in a few seconds i heard a pop similar to a ziploc bag popping open. i kind of looked around and i had smoke billowing out of my clothes and pocket. >> reporter: green said his pocket was singed. he threw the phone on the floor as a toxic smelling smoke began filling the nearby rows. >> i did see the cloud of smoke and someone yelled it's the phone. the phone caught on fire. >> it it was electronic smoke. it was that brown green gray real ugly stuff. >> reporter: it was just last month samsung issued a worldwide recall offering replacements for all note 7s. >> we apologize, especially to those of you who are personally affected by this. >> reporter: with roughly 100 reports of spontaneous dangerous fires the faa issued its own strict orders for passenger planes. >> please be sure that you turn that galaxy 7 off completely

charge it any time during the flight. >> reporter: brian green said his phone was a replacement for his original note 7 that he turned in as part of the recall. the phone's serial number indicates it should be good. samsung tells nbc news, "until we're able to retrieve the device we cannot confirm this incident involves the new note 7". >> i can't speak to how long it will take. we're fully committed to getting answers as quickly as commission says they want customers to know they can turn their galaxy note 7s in for a full refund. the faa says it's very concerned the lithium replacement ion batteries may pose a danger like the owner batteries. the phone that caught fire on that plane was so hot it burned a hole into the airport carpet. declines on wall street after big losses early, the

umpethat it had problems charging medicaid. the nfl is starting to worry about ratings. the wall street journal reports they are down through the first four weeks of the season. it could be tied to the oycottnfl. 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick started the protest in the offseason by kneeling during the national anthem. they say they're what they see as oppression of african americans in the country, but the protest may not be the real reason for the lower ratings. monday night football seemed to take a hit because of the first presidential debate. however, viewership in denver was still one of the highest in the country. networks have dedicated a lot of money to nfl programming. some say that's misguided because more and more viewers

the ads. the colorado school of mines is getting into crowd funding launching a website called goldmine to launch student projects. it launched this week and has seven projects listed which include engineering work in nepal to a tiny house project. the goldmine will deliver all donated money to the projects without fees and regardless of whether they meet their goals. when you step into the airport with a pet, chances are that pet wi until you get to your next destination unless you're at dia. the airport opened three pet relief areas. >> in concourse a, b and c there is an artificial turf flooring with a drainage system and artificial rock for the pups. owners are asked to clean up afterwards. bags and disposal containers are available nearby for free. the rooms have a sink, soap

regarding hurricane matthew, this is a live picture of florida this afternoon. the hurricane is about 100 miles east, southeast of there. wind speeds have been measured at 140 miles per hour. the national hurricane center says it's heading toward florida at 13 miles per hour. 3,500 members of the national guard are evacuating residents. actor ben stiller announced this week doctors diagnosed him with prostate cancer a saved his life. he's now in remission. in an essay for the website medium stiller writes, "i was lucky enough to have a doctor who gave me what they call a baseline psa test when i was about 46. as his psa levels rose the next two years doctors discovered a tumor that was deemed midrange aggressive cancer." >> learned i was someone who

can't. >> a study found dramatic increase in prostate cancer cases, but some organizations recommend against routine psa tests because they are not always reliable and can lead to overtreatment with painful side effects. some 2,600 men will die of prostate cancer this year in the u.s. we wanted to talk to our medical expert dr. john torres about it. here's what he says about those psa tests. >> in his case psa happened to work for him and saved his life, but what we found those tests not everybody should get all the type and that's the recommendation -- time and that's the recommendation of a lot of groups including the american cancer society. they say men should talk with their doctor to find out when and if they should start psa tests and how often they should do them. the big concern is if these tests come out positive, they have to get other procedures including biopsies that could cause other issues including

it should be a very personal decision based on you, your family's health status and not to get them as a regular screening test as has been done in the past. in ben stiller's case we think it saved his life, but for other people that might cause more harm than good. that's why it's an individual choice between you and your doctor and that discussion is very, very important. >> prostate cancer, of course, a very slow growing ca result in more work that needs to be done. ultimately it could be harmful, but talk to your doctor. men can get screened for the great american beer festival. it's a great way for men to take their health seriously. there will be several locations for screening there through saturday. strokes will almost 130,000 americans every year. that's one of every 20 deaths.

the american stroke association says whenever possible, patients should go to an inherent rehabilitation unit rather than a skilled nursing home. the specialized units tend to offer more intensive speech, physical and occupational therapy. it is estimated up to 40% of stroke survivors develop some form of depression which can be addressed early with inpatient rehab. >> i think many people are not treated or under treated. i've seen many pie put on an antide, n't respond and well, i treated them and i think there's an opportunity to prove practice in that area as well. >> the stroke association also recommends patients should not be discharged without going through a program about preventing falls is especially important for older patients. back to the future 2 actually predicted the real future in many ways, more than promise, i promise, look it up

some computer models indicate hurricane matthew might not make just one visit to south florida. would mean a second hit on tuesday. some people who live in florida and surrounding states say they just want to get out, but now that may be impossible. here's reporter sebastian robertson in dallas. >> most people are leaving and getting hotels. >> reporter: ashley mackey of celeste, texas, is one of many anxiously waiting out hurricane matthew. >> yes. in a perfect world i would be at home with my family going to the state fair of texas monday.

naval base just north of the florida/georgia border as much of the southeast is in a state of emergency. those who waited till the last minute to catch a flight out of town may be out of luck. by midday more than 1,500 u.s. flights canceled, more than 4,000 delayed. dallas-based carrier southwest was forced to cancel 150 flights. their crews closely monitoring the situation on social media. >> we are preparing for hurricane matthew. made it to dfw this morning on one of the few flights from florida. >> i put my car up on the second or third floor of the garage and hunkered the house down and left. that's all you kind of can do is hope for the best. >> reporter: miami international bearing the brunt of delays, a whopping 60% of flights grounded. >> i tried to get home for about 5 1/2 hours yesterday, but it did not work out. >> reporter: mackey scrambled to book a flight last night and didn't have any luck.

my anxiety was through the roof and i was on the point of tears and i kind of accepted that i was going to have to stay here. >> reporter: what few flights were left were too pricey for her to justify. so for now down hoping matthew doesn't live up to its forecast. >> so much uncertainty right now on the east coast. matthew is still tearing through the caribbean. more than 100 deaths have been reported. > the state is encouraging people to get out and stay out until the storm is over. well, cool and cloudy around colorado today closer to home here, but we are expecting warmer weather for the weekend. we want to check in with meteorologist becky ditchfield out in the backyard. pretty nice out there today. >> after this morning when the rain finally came to an end and the sun came out it did turn out to be a nice cool crisp

take a live look outside at the sunshine over the denver metro area. a couple clouds on the horizon. i don't think those will do much, most of the rain is over for us now. we wound up with a high of 54 degrees. believe it or not, that 54 came just after midnight this morning. that being said this afternoon once the sun came out we still did get up into the 50s, but that's still way below our average high of 69. it's 53 at dia, 46 greeley, 53 around fort collins, the and southeast colorado where lamar is 63 and trinidad 65. we still have 30s and 40s stretching across parts of our northern, central and even southern mountains. here outside 9news lots of sunshine, still jacket weather. we're at 50. this afternoon was cool, but from here on out we'll see those temperatures start to warm up during the day. tonight will be a cold one. a lot of that has to do with

one thunderstorm just south of fort morgan and then some light rain showers ouaround greeley likely contributing to the temperatures in the 40s. out to our west across the mountains we have seen pictures of the snow still coming down across the continental divide. most locations after early this morning were reporting 1 to 4 inches of snow on the ground. i even saw one report near avon where we had 2 1/2 inches of snow on the ground there. so it was a nice little touch of snow that wrapping up tonight. the storm, the leading edge, the cold front is pushing out across the midwest. you can actually see the severe thunderstorm watch box and tornado watch boxes we actually have across most of kansas and also oklahoma. these storms are actually spawning several tornadoes through kansas. we still have some severe thunderstorm warnings associated with that, but you can see the powerful line

through manhattan and continuing further east. these storms will continue to track east over the next couple of days. meanwhile we're watching still hurricane matthew. we've been talking about in a lot during the newscast. it is a category 4 storm, very strong, and that eye is approaching the east coast of florida, so the atlantic side. it still has maximum sustained winds of 140 miles per hour. that makes matthew a category storm and it's expected to make landfall sometime later tonight, early tomorrow morning. rail amounts are upwards of 5, possibly 6 inches -- rain amounts are upwards of 5, possibly 6 inches, especially right on the coastline. it will lose strength as it makes contact with land and pushes right along the east coast through georgia and south carolina. by saturday it will be a

this storm is expected to potentially then loop back around. by tuesday it will be a tropical storm taking aim again at southern florida. so this is one that we are watching very closely as i'm sure you have seen over the last several days. the forecast track has changed quite a bit. it may still do so. we will keep a close eye on it because that is a lot of rain for those folks. meanwhile back here our the area of cool air we've had over us has been because of that tromp in the -- trough in the upper levels. it's going towe'll have highs in the 60s tomorrow and 70s for the weekend. clear skies tonight, though, will lead to cold temperatures, clear skies and calm winds. our skies are expected to clear tonight heading into tomorrow. we'll have loads of sunshine

quickly, but overnight tonight we're expecting temperatures to drop to or below freezing. highs got into the 50s again today. we are dropping to about 32 tonight in denver, 27 in greeley, 30 for fort collins, eastern plains, low 30s, teens and20s for the mountains with upper 30s out across the western slope. because we will be so cold the national weather service has placed all of i-25 and most of our eastern plains, northwest colorado and some of our mountain valley freeze warning from midnight tonight until 9 a.m. friday. i'm sure you're noticing the big blank spots out near yuma, ray and burlington. that's a frost advisory from 2 a.m. until 9 a.m. friday. it's going to be a cold night tonight, 32 degrees in denver, freezing temperatures. we've got that freeze warning. we'll have clear skies, calm winds, then tomorrow with sunshine we'll warm up quickly. 64 the forecast high, winds will be out of the south at 5

a colorado photographer is looking for the woman who sold her a very special wedding gown from the 1950s for no other reason than she wants to share the photos with her. >> kimberly hardwin bought the dress about a year ago for a wedding shoot. a woman was selling her mother's wedding dress on an online sale group. so kimberly bought it for about $25. she received the vintage dress

the downtown aquarium has a physical therapy routine that includes an otter treadmill and otter obstacle course. >> their bones are curved in their back and front legs. so what we're doing with them is we have a physical therapist and were on surgeon that comes down -- and orthopedic surgeon that comes down monthly to work with them. she teaches us to do exercises with them to keep those leg muscles strong and that helps little more upright. >> 10-month-old olive will be out and about this weekend. if the sisters are up for it, they'll be on exhibit, although they typically have a packed schedule with six feedings a day and plenty of naps. boy, wish my day went like that. is that my spirit animal six feedings a day? that's it. >> look at the cute whiskers. we are creatures of habit. once we go down a path, even

school mr. lopez is not teaching lessons about math or science. he's on a mission. >> what is a big goal you guys have accomplished? >> reporter: to keep kids out of gangs by telling his own story. >> next thing you know i stopped playing baseball and i made the bad decision of joining a gang. >> reporter: at the time lopez was a teenager in los angeles where he went by the name clever. >> i started getting high or drunk. >> reporter: sometimes he even found himself assaulting people. >> i was gang banging. in a gang he finally decided he'd had enough, so he came to colorado to start over. >> who has ever been bullied before? >> reporter: he began by reaching out to kids in trouble at several different area schools and formed a group. >> my no. one thing is try to tell them something to protect them from that gang life world. >> reporter: lopez's story got the attention of high school film teacher allen dominguez. >> it took about 15 minutes of
