hurricane matthew keeps including towards the southeastern united states moving at about 13 miles an hour after leaving more than 100 dead in the caribbean. in haitied a workers are just getting an idea of what could be the country's biggest disaster in years. people living in florida and along the coastline in georgia are boarding up their home and getting out. president obama declared a stat the category 4 storm is gaining intensity and momentum heading for the u.s. with sustained winds of 140 miles an hour and gusts much stronger. the storm surge is predicted to be 6 to 9 feet. hurricane matthew in size is about 500 miles across. that's the distance between tampa and new orleans. it would be a 7 1/2 hour drive from end to end. local law enforcement is telling people they must evacuate. >> i don't lean towards

close to family. we packed up the house saturday and ended up outrunning hurricane matthew. >> reporter: outrunning the storm perhaps but not its impact on their lives. friends in florida helped them out. >> we're lucky we have really good friends and one of them went to the house and brought in all the loose items to bring in the house so we didn't have extra debris and some other friends put up our shutters which we're very thankful for. >> reporter: and there was one silver lining. >> all my are on their way to colorado. so i tell myself i'm pretty lucky wi that. >> reporter: but what comes next may not be, a 3 to 6-foot storm surge projected for where his home is. >> i didn't factor potentially having to rebuild our house to try and sell it. i'm pretty worried about that. >> reporter: now he also waits to see what matthew does like millions of others in its path. maya rodriguez, 9news. >> ginsberg says after

make schools liable for safety. it's named after clair davis killed in 2013 in the arapahoe high school shooting. her parents pushed for school safety reform. an insurance company for colorado schools is offering new training programs on school safety. earlier this year 9wants to know reporter anastasiya bolton discovered some schools wouldn't train for an active shooter scenario, didn't know how or wouldn't tell us if they did. this took you >> yes. it's only fair we follow up and do a positive story about something a school is doing. recently bayfield, colorado, was the host of a school training program. they had training before, but when we visited, they were going for something new. the i love u guys foundation partnered with the self-

shooting and his foundation has done shooter trainings ever since. this year the self-insurance pool expects to reach 65 to 75 members. school safety training is a lot about changing the culture, getting the buy-in from the community. that's something that needs to happen he says and it's a process that takes time. >> three years ago when i started this job, i was one of those folks that if it does happen here, how can we every anymore. i think we can put things in place that are very unrestrictive so it's not a prison, but at the same time we can keep our kids safe and just by i call it buckling our seatbelt every day. 30 years ago people didn't wear seatbelts and now just about everybody does. >> the right way to train for school safety is so very much a

an underage relative. 44-year-old dean mccullom was arrested yesterday. investigators say the assault took place between2006 and 2011. mccullom was a teach are at bowder elementary school and as gymnastics coach in fort collins. a police officer suspected of causing a fatal crash in a guilty to vehicular homicide. he's accused of engaging in a 5- mile episode of road rage at speeds reaching 90 miles per hour and eventually crashed his subaru into another driver's pickup forcing the pickup driver to lose control and crash. moreno was killed. according to the greeley tribune, jackson entered his plea wednesday. the 35th annual great american beer festival got

when you think of a lake, you think cool, inviting and swimmable. not this one. this is on the big island in hawaii where kilauea continues to erupt. molten lava is splashing up the crater walls of the lava lake. it was shot from the edge of the volcano's summit crater. this particular eruption has be because of the way the magma rises and falls within the volcano it's not always visible. kilauea is the most active volcano in the world. the wildfire that destroyed eight homes in southern colorado is now 50% contained. investigators believe the beulah hill fire started monday from a spark from a cdot excavator. a cdot spokesperson said the equipment was used on a maintenance project and was moving rocks. the excavator operator called 911 when he couldn't get the

residents evacuated are being allowed back into their homes now. the faa and consumer product safety commission are launching new urgent investigations after a phone seemed to catch fire on a southwest airlines plane in louisville, kentucky. the owner of the phone said the phone was a new replacement model of the galaxy note 7 he got after his original phone, part of a worldwide recall last month, turned in. the phone forced evacuation of it all started when brian green tried to power down his galaxy note 7 before the plane even left the gate. >> just placed the phone in my pocket and within a few seconds i heard a pop similar to like a ziploc bag popping open. i kind of looked around to see what was going on and i had smoke billowing out of my clothes and pocket. >> samsung issued a worldwide recall of the phones last month after dozens of reports of spontaneous dangerous fires. the faa has strict orders now

danielle, but here we're just worried about a little rain in the high country. >> wasn't that a nice way to wake up this morning? once again this afternoon sunshine is back. we will be watching for some extremely cold temperatures later on tonight. freeze warnings in place for the denver metro area and the eastern plains, too. up in the mountains several inches of snowfall coming down, this one out in bailey. doesn't that look like it should be framed? dave masters reminding us it is still fall, mother nature bringing fresh snowfall in evergreen. our temperatures this afternoon managed their way to the mid- 50s, out at the airport, greeley, fort collins, warmer in southeastern colorado mid- to upper 60s, 36 in leadville, low 60s in grand junction and cortez. 51 at the airport, sunshine. the winds have picked up out of the northeast around 13 miles per hour. in the 9news backyard our temperatures are beginning to cool off, about 50 degrees. if you have plans this evening,

temperatures will cool off very fast. that cold front that pushed through bringing us a little rainfall in the metro area, snowfall in the high country quickly moving out across parts of the midwest, omaha through wichita looking at severe thunderstorms moving in. they are under that tornado watch through late tonight. around here still a couple light little snow flurries popping up in the high country along the continental divide and a couple rain showers through larimer and weld counties. we'll zoom out and look at hurricane matthew. it is a monster. slowly going to be grazing up the coastline of florida. this really is going to be dramatic. we can see right now current wind speeds 140 miles per hour and from the center of the eye you go 60 miles in each direction and you are going to feel those hurricane force winds. so as this storm system just lines up just kind of clipping parts of georgia as well as the carolinas, folks will be feeling this well into the inland areas.

tomorrow afternoon. it drops down to about a cat 3. still it will be a beast as it pulls through charleston and makes its way kind of wrapping back around losing some of its steam but still managing potentially to hang on as a tropical storm as it takes this bizarre southerly track and long range models actually show it maybe going all the way back to where it once started before. you can see the rainfall. the computer models are really picking up south carolina, north carolina easily between to 12 inches of water. across the coast lines that's not even counting the storm surge that will happen out there as well and the intense winds. tonight 31 degrees. it's going to be freezing out here for most of eastern colorado, chilly in the high country areas and we have a freeze warning in place for the far northwestern section, frost advisories for portions of the eastern plains as well along i- 70, burlington, ray.
