winds... driving rain... hurricane matthew ... is hitting florida right now. this is a live earthcam picture from fort lauderdale. the storm weakened to a category three storm overnight... but the danger for millions of people along florida's coast remains. the rain was falling sideways... in vero beach, florida... street signs were shaking... and trees were whipping around. this morning... the national hurricane center is warning the eye of the extremely dangerous storm is getting closer to land. they call themselves hurricane hunters. they take flights through matthew... to measure the strength of the storm. this video just in to the newsroom... the national weather service says the storm surge from matthew could be much stronger than the rush of water that took out parts of the

the storm weakened to a cateogory three overnight... but its still considered very dangerous. it's been almost 11 years since a category 3 hit the would produce deadly storm surges up to 11 feet deep. n-b-c's jay gray is in daytona beach... jay... the rain and wind is already there... now florida is bracing for the brunt of the storm. moving along the florida coast.. matthew is .. in many areas .. overwhelming.. florida :05 - :08 "we are already starting to see the impacts and its a monster." violent winds.. sheets of rain.. and a growing surf.. with the potential in some areas of a storm surge up to 11- feet.. south carolina :16 - :19 "i am begging you to understand. .... these kind of storm surges not something you want to get caught up in." electricity has become a luxury in the strike zone .. tens-of-thousands have lost power and that number is expected to grow.. more than 11- million along the east coast are

on cu's campus had any ties to the school. police say-- brandon simmons was in the champions center parking lot wednesday threatning people with a sword like weapon. after he wen officers confronted him in a stairwell. that's when officers say he refused to drop weapon and the opened fire. a boulder county deputy who shot and killed a man last month, has not only been cleared of any wrong doing, but will soon be honored for it. this as the district attorney ruled she was fully justified in the shooting last month. deputy teri javes shot adrian shaffer. investigators say he fired at her as she approached him in her vehicle - along highway 287

the sheriff's office says her quick reaction saved her life-- and possibly lives of other people nearby. deputy javes will soon be will be awarded the medal of valor for her courage and skills while under fire. 5 weeks in the hospital and many feared a detective would never make it home. that tells you why the goodbye at the hospital was so emotional - so incredible. detective dan brite is fighting his way back to the force -- lined the hallways and they cheered as he headed for the door. finally. he nearly died when he was shot in the line of duty in parker, on september 2nd. brite was released from adventist hospital thursday. the next stop for detective brite is rehab at craig hospital. many schools in parker have been doing fundraisers to help support the brite family. new today-- authorities are confirming a piece of air craft wing found on an african island belongs to
