is describing hurricane matthew. huge wind gusts, trees coming down, so much water. a lot of people without power. next in line, daytona beach. jacksonville, georgia and the carolinas. >> and victims of the fiery crash remembered at a candlelight vigil. the crash killed five teenagers and left families and friends heart overnight. it's time to start thinking of bundling up and your yards too, protecting your home from frost. >> i'm corey rose with gary shapiro. meteorologist marty coniglio joins us. you had an umbrella yesterday. >> yes, this morning close to freezing in a lot of places. a freeze warning until 9:00 this morning. not a hard freeze but we're going to get into that 29 to 32-

places. these are the current readings. we're dropping down there. bear in mind we have another hour and-a-half, two hours of cooling to go. a lot of us are going to slip below freezing. freeze warnings out for the front range, southeastern colorado all the way to wyoming and nebraska. several areas in western colorado especially the glenwood springs area and wine country, near grand junction, freeze warnings in that part of the state as well. frost advisories out on the eastern plains, yuma, kit carson and cheyenne that also until 9:00 this morning. for us it's very cool now. we'll just drop down to near 31, 32 degrees briefly, then start warming right back up in to the 40s by the end of the rush hour. mid-60s by the end of the day. a a nice way to round out the week. a few more people getting out on the roadways. i-70 and central park here, not causing major delays yet.

want to grab a jacket. it's going to be a little chilly but you also need sunglasses. for sun glare. hopefully the accidents won't be as bad as we saw yesterday with all the rainwater pooling on some of the major roadways. here's a look at the metro area now, we have two accidents, one was a single-vehicle rollover. that was on washington and 50th. we also have another fender- already starting the morning off with a couple of accidents. we'll keep our fingers crossed that conditions stay relatively quiet. if you are heading to the airport, security lines only five, 10 minutes so you're in the clear as well. we have a live look now from jacksonville, florida. as hurricane matthew is moving parallel to the florida coast at the present time. it's just off-shore as the storm tracks its way up along the florida coast, people who

for impact. reporters at our sister station in jacksonville are keeping us updated as the changes occur throughout the morning. >> we're at jacks beach by 10th avenue. can you hear that? it's pretty windy out here. we're talking 30 miles per hour now, it's an estimate. we're expecting it to get four times as high. another thing to pay attention to is the possible flooding. first look at th, we're already seeing it. second one, as that water rushes in, you see that white foam? that is usually a great sign of just how intense the waves are. so we want to keep an eye on that. what can we expect as far as storm surge? around 4 to 7 feet, that's a good estimate. there are dooms-day estimates out there of 9 feet but 4 to 7 is probably a good prediction.

coslov, back to you. it's now a category 3 storm but the winds are still about 110 miles per hour. violent heavy rain in many places and surges as we said are expected up to 11 feet. leaders in georgia and south carolina are still urging people there to get out while they have a chance. while many in florida, almost one million people there have already been evacuated. >> already starting to see the impacts and it's a r. this is a storm that should be taken seriously. we really need you to evacuate. >> the last time a hurricane of this strength hit that area was hurricane wilma in 2005. we are following breaking news happening now. denver police are looking for the driver of a car that rolled at 50th and washington. vida urbonas is there working to get more information from police but it sounds like

>> reporter: correct. they are looking for that suspect. this area is blocked off for at least six blocks in this entire area. there's a heavy police presence and there's even a helicopter overhead. i saw earlier some police out there with flashlights searching in the neighborhoods around here. i'm going to step out of the shot to show you just what is going on behind me. this is the scene of roover accident. you can see the debris on the ground and pieces of a car even on the ground as well. this happened early this morning denver police then sent out an alert, they are -- in this entire area of 50th and washington. i even see they brought in some colorado state patrol troopers to help block off the area. it's a one-vehicle crash. one person was transported to the hospital with very serious injuries. that person was the passenger in the car. we believe the driver fled the scene and this intersection then shut down because of all of this.

wearing a hoodie, washington closed off from 48th to 54th. this is impacting cars in the area. it's a huge backup both on the north side and the south side. it's impacting rtd routes northbound and southbound. and there is a detour in place until the scene is clear. so again, it's not only going to impact rtd passengers if you're on that rtd bus route but it's going to impact drivers in the area. my suggestion, if you are coming from the north end you want to use i-70 to washington. >> sounds like the denver police helicopter may be overhead. thank you. 5:36. there's going to be a vigil today to honor the five teens whose lives were cut short in a terrible crash. two of the teens were brothers. friends are going to gather for a candlelight ceremony to come support the families. that is video from the crash that happened on delbert road

the vigil begins 8:00 tonight. the church is on florida avenue in denver. it took 70 years but now a denver marine missing in action since world war ii will be buried with full military honors. private first class ronald bosmer will be buried at fairmount cemetery this weekend. next to his parents. the nonprofit history flight recovered the remains along with 35 other marines last year. services for him are open to the public. > about benet ramsey is suing a pathologist in michigan who said the brother killed the 6- year-old girl. dirk ramsey filed a defamation suit against dr. werner spitz. he said that the brother, 9 at the time blageneds her to death in -- bludgeoned her to death in 1996. there was no dna linking him to the crime.

least $150 million in damages. jon benet ramsey found dead in her home in boulder. her parents and brother were cleared in 2008 when prosecutors say the dna didn't match anybody in the family. a 30-year-old woman who is responsible for the death of her nearly 2-month-old son will now spend 25 years in prison. candace lamply was sentenced after pleading guilty to child abuse resulting in death. investigators say that the being brought into a denver hospital with many injuries. the case is not over though. lampley's boyfriend also faces charges. two people serving time in colorado prisons will soon be released thanks to president obama's latest push to grant clemency to non-violent inmates. he's now cutting 102 federal inmates sentences shorter. that brings the total to 774 during his time in office. almost all were convicted of

christian jones and shane allen taylor, both serving time for drug related crimes. >> one of the followers of charles manson was trying to get out on parole but a judge said no. a state board decided leslie van huten would be eligible for parole after years of good behavior. they made that decision in april. but the california governor says that shouldn't happen and decided to keep her in prison. her lawyers wanted a judge to overturn the governor's decision but a judge refused. and she's serving a life years ago. it's 5:39 now. you likely felt it overnight. freezing or nearly freezing temperatures. you may have even turned on the heat for the first time in a while. >> it's the first freeze this season and there will be many more to come.

the sprinkler system one of the things to think about. >> reporter: yes, but now we talk about plants. for those of you at home not certified plant experts like i am -- nothing in my yard has died -- yeah, right. holly shields is a horticulturalist with the city of denver. you know about everything in the yard, in this garden. starting with those annuals, those -- wait, annuals or perennials? i get mixed up. >> annuals. >> >> reporter: annuals. when they are in our yard and we winter, do we leave them? or do we pull them up since they start getting kind of yucky? >> the best bet, get rid of them, you don't want fungus or disease that may be on the plant to cause your soil to carry that over through the next year for whenever you plant new annuals. the best bet, when you can't stand them anymore is to go ahead and remove that old plant

winter. >> reporter: i never knew something could spread, like a fungus could spread and affect your soil. so people should know that. another option, in your hand, what to do with some of the annuals in our yard now? >> this is a object that you can hang upside down in a dried spot and have a dried flower arrangement all season long. or you could, after it's done drying you can actually collect the seed. if you look here, >> reporter: wait, these are the sods. >> you can collect them like the butterfly weed earlier and store them in your refrigerator over the winter. >> reporter: you need a bag or paper bag and put them in the fridge? >> yeah. and start them up again next season. the most important thing is to make sure they are not hybrid varieties. that seed general doesn't come back.

warming into the 60s today, so anything you can save through this morning, i think you have another several days before things really start going south on us again. by the way, as far as football, any high school sports going on, of course it's a high school boys soccer as well, it will be kind of cool for you this evening. we're going to be dropping rapidly from the mid-50s to the upper 40s by late this evening. the e-mail giant yahoo ha first e-mail hack, then reports of snooping through customer e- mails. two issues that could amount to a loss of a billion dollars.

issues. yahoo currently two different issues. one that it was hacked in 2014 and names and passwords from at least 500 million accounts were stolen. reuters reports that they snooped through customer e- mails for the government. the original deal between verizon and yahoo was a $8.43 billion deal. neither company has commented. the on-line warehouse club called boxed.com is taking a stand against what they say is unfair pricing on women's products known starting today boxed.com is cutting prices on feminine products. most states add sales tax from 5% to 9% for feminine products because they are considered non- essential or luxury. boxed.com reduced that and is covering the cost to change the prices. part of what they are calling the rethink pink initiative. updating hurricane matthew again. hovering just off the coast of

and anticipated to continue up the coast. hurricane warnings go from west palm beach all the way into charleston, south carolina. and very heavy wind. we've had a wind gust of 93 miles per hour at the air force base at cape canaveral. they have significant coastal flooding going in central florida right now. temperatures however, are in the 70s and 80s, in this heavy rain, wind gusts right now, daytona beach going to 63 miles per hour. this is a catego anticipated to make landfall late tonight, looks like about 9:30, 10:00 tonight this is mountain time by the way -- it could be possibly a category 3, a major hurricane moving to the charleston, south carolina area. storm surge anticipated up to 11 feet in those areas. and rain anywhere from 6 to 15 inches over the course of the weekend. a major hurricane, especially

we sunnyside neighborhood. this hour we're taking you inside one of denver's oldest churches. right off of 42nd and federal, st. catherine of sienna parish and school. architecture stunning. this catholic church started in 1912 with only a small crowd of followers. many of them italian immigrants. in 1921 the church basement was converted in to a school. st. catherine of sienna school

well, overnight while you were sleeping, hurricane matthew did slam into the florida coast. it weakened a little bit to a category 3 storm, but it's still bringing intense winds, lots of rain as it moves north. >> up and down the coast florida is getting pounded with rain and wind from coastal areas like daytona beach all the way inland to orlando. the en fury of hurricane matthew. >> higher in the north, getting hit hard as well, katie jefferies from our sister station in jacksonville is in jacksonville beach this morning where the rain has picked up in intensity ahead of matthew's arrival. >>reporter: katie jefferies here at jax beach where conditions have gotten significantly worse. you can see the rain swirling around us at this point, really starting to come down. in fact, i'm sorry, it's kind of hard to even look directly at you guys into the wind.
